Default Sticky: Man United U-23 Matches 2020/21

Semoga tim senior United bisa mengalahkan Liverpool dengan skor yang sama di musim ini, hehehe..

U23S REPORT: UNITED 3 LIVERPOOL 5

Manchester United and Liverpool’s Under-23s scored eight goals between them in an incident-packed Premier League 2 encounter at Leigh.

But it was the Anfield lads who claimed the points in an entertaining but occasionally fiery clash.

This fixture, at every level, is the one most supporters look for when the season’s list of matches is revealed, and apart from the obvious rivalry between the two great clubs, it’s an occasion that rarely fails to deliver the goods.

This contest could comfortably be bracketed into that category if, ultimately, Neil Wood’s young and inexperienced line-up came out of it on the losing side, against a Liverpool outfit containing a number of players familiar with first-team and full international football.

With an autumnal chill in the air and threatening dark clouds above, the game started at a predictably lively pace, with both teams placing the emphasis on attack.

Anthony Elanga’s unquenchable energy was evident almost from the off, as he tested the visitors’ defence with a number of darting runs down the left wing.

The Reds had opened in a positive frame of mind, but so had Liverpool and, in the 11th minute, Leighton Clarkson put his side in front after winning the ball in midfield.

The Merseysiders had started to stamp their mark on the game and as a result openings began to appear and 11 minutes after taking the lead they doubled their advantage when Wales international Ben Woodburn’s shot took a deflection off Di’Shon Bernard before nestling in the top corner.

Jack Bearne made it three to the visitors and United appeared to be looking at a harrowing night, but hopes were raised briefly, in the 36th minute, when Elanga pulled one back from close range after Liverpool goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom failed to punch clear Hannibal’s free-kick.

Hopes that a United fightback was on the cards received a severe blow when Bearne grabbed his second of the night just before half-time, and Luis Longstaff made it five shortly after the break after capitalising on a mix-up at the back for the young Reds.

United’s Shola Shoretire and Liverpool’s Clarkson were then given their marching orders by referee David Richardson, with our no.7, making his first start for the Under-23s, reacting angrily to a late challenge by the visiting midfielder on Bernard.

After the red cards, the home side enjoyed their best spell of the match, with the ever-dangerous Elanga testing Winterbottom and Joe Hugill going close on his debut.

The game would at least finish on a positive note, with two goals in the closing stages –a sidefooted effort from Hannibal that left Winterbottom static and a neat McCann finish, to complete a well-crafted team move.

United 3 (Elanga 36, Hannibal 79, McCann 88)
Liverpool 5 (Clarkson 11, Woodburn 22, Bearne 30, 45+1, Longstaff 50)

United: Mastny; Bejger (Ercolani 46), Fish (c), Bernard, Svidersky; McCann, Wellens; Shoretire, Hannibal, Elanga; Helm (Hugill 23).

Subs not used: Carney, Neville, Stanley.

HUGILL BRACE SECURES A POINT FOR UNDER-23S

Manchester United Under-23s showed battling qualities in drawing 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers at the Lancashire County Ground in Leyland.

Joe Hugill capped his first league start with a brace, the first a well-taken effort just two minutes into the game.

Connor McBride’s penalty and a Brad Lyons header looked to have given Rovers the win, but Hugill then popped up at the far post, with just four minutes to play, to turn home Anthony Elanga’s cross.

Lead coach Neil Wood made two changes to the side that overcame Rochdale on penalties in the EFL Trophy in midweek, with Harvey Neville replacing Logan Pye in the XI and slotting in at right-back and 16-year-old Isak Hansen in for his first Under-23s start, in place of Martin Svidersky in midfield.

A youthful United side got off to a flyer with an early opener.

The game was a little over 90 seconds old when Elanga found Hugill in space in the box, and the 16-year-old showed great composure to hit the bottom corner.

Rovers came into the game with a 100 per cent record, but it was the Reds who were the better side for much of the opening 25 minutes, with Elanga’s stinger being well held by Jordan Eastham.

Then, against the run of play, Di’Shon Bernard was adjudged to have blocked Isaac Whitehall’s shot with a hand and, from the resulting spot-kick, McBride scored past Ondrej Mastny, although the Czech stopper did dive the right way.

The goal appeared to boost the home side’s confidence and United skipper Will Fish blocked well from Rovers’ left-winger Luke Brennan, before Mastny stretched to tip Ben Paton’s drive behind and ensure it was a goal apiece at the break.

Further chances arrived for Rovers almost immediately after the resumption, with Fish heading against his own post and Bernard intervening on the line after Mastny had got the slightest of touches on Hayden Carter’s firm header.

The Czech could do nothing to stop Blackburn taking the lead on the hour mark, however, when Lyons reacted quickest to head home a half-cleared Carter cross.

Wood opted for a switch of personnel, bringing Lukasz Bejger on at left-back, with Luca Ercolani joining Fish in defence and Bernard pushing up into midfield.

The blue-and-white tide continued to pour forward, though, with Sam Barnes’ radar only slightly wide of the mark when he tried a speculative effort from 18 yards.

Elanga was the conduit through which the Reds looked most likely to get back into the game, regularly forcing his way through on goal from the left but finding his way blocked by a resolute Rovers backline. It was from this avenue that United won a corner – Hannibal’s set-piece delivery was perfect, but Bernard saw his header grasped by Eastham.

Half-time replacement Connor Stanley then forced the Rovers’ keeper into another save, as he worked space on the edge of the box and let fly after a free-flowing counter-attack, initiated by the neat-and-tidy Hansen.

United were clearly in the ascendancy and, with less than five minutes left on the clock, Elanga – now playing on the right after the introduction of Noam Emeran - broke clear and crossed with Eastham only diverting it to an unmarked Hugill, who tapped home his second of the game.

Blackburn almost snatched a late winner, but Lewis Thompson’s header fortunately drifted wide.

UNITED U23S CLAIM FIRST WIN IN DRAMATIC FASHION

Manchester United’s Under-23s were celebrating our first Premier League 2 Division One victory of the season after Ethan Galbraith's 97th-minute penalty sealed an impressive performance from the Reds.

Neil Wood's side had to come from behind with Anthony Elanga getting the leveller after Ellis Simms had put Everton in front on the hour.

The win was marred to some degree when Reds goalkeeper Ondrej Mastny was taken from the field on a stretcher, after receiving treatment for several minutes. Happily, his coach Wood later confirmed the shot-stopper was up and about in the dressing room and showing no serious effects from his heavy collision with team-mate Will Fish.

United's senior Academy side went into this game against the Toffees on a similar path to the one negotiated by the club’s first team so far this season, enjoying more success when taking to the road.

Two away trips in Premier League 2, against Blackburn Rovers and Arsenal, ended with the Reds sharing the spoils, whilst the results of the previous couple of home games, when we welcomed Leicester City and Liverpool, had left us still searching for our first victory at Leigh Sports Village.

United, who trailed Everton by five points at the start of the game, were bolstered by the inclusion of three first-team players - defenders Marcos Rojo and Brandon Williams, whilst recently acquired 18-year-old Uruguayan winger Facundo Pellistri was also on the team sheet.

There was no rain on a crisp, chilly evening at Leigh, which felt a little like autumn standing aside as winter made one of its early appearances.

Sadly the stands were once again deserted as the match got under way with both teams displaying a high level of energy and adventure.

Williams went close to grabbing an early goal but just failed to connect with a slick Galbraith pass into the area.

Rojo fancied his chances on a couple of occasions, firing one wide from well over thirty yards and later grazing the post with curling free-kick.

It wasn’t, by any means, all United and the visitors must have rued their luck when goalbound efforts from Ellis Simms and Einar Iversen were blocked by the Reds’ defence.

Pellistri, who made something like thirty appearances for Penarol’s first team, back in his native Uruguay, started to show his pedigree as the game wore on and he was frequently involved when United threatened.

Everton moved in front, on the hour, when striker Simms found the net after Ondrej Mastny had made a terrific save to block the first attempt.

That was pretty much Mastny's last action of the game for shortly afterwards he was stretchered from the field, following that afore-mentioned collision with Fish. The clash allowed Simms the opportunity to double the lead but Williams scampered back to save the day.

Paul Woolston took over from the injured Mastny between the sticks and he was just in time to see his side level the scores with Elanga swapping passes with Joe Hugill before lashing the ball home.

Neil Wood’s lads certainly enjoyed the best of the closing stages and at times the Everton goal was virtually under siege. Only a brilliant save from the visitors' 'keeper Joao Virginia prevented Mark Helm from giving United the lead from open play.

The injury to Mastny meant that there was quite a chunk of time to add on and it was in the 97th minute that Galbraith struck from the penalty spot after Williams had been floored by Imam Jagne.

MATCH DETAILS

United: Mastny (Woolston 70); Williams, Mengi, Fish, Rojo (Hugill 46), Fernandez; Hannibal (Helm 68), Galbraith, Pellistri, Elanga, Shoretire

Substitutes not used: Ercolani, McCann.

Goals: Elanga 75, Galbraith pen. 90+7 | Simms 60.

UNDER-23S: UNITED 2 CITY 2

Manchester United and Manchester City deservedly shared the points after drawing 2-2 in this splendid Premier League 2 Division One clash at Leigh Sports Village Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

This game delivered everything that is expected when these two great clubs meet and the drama, excitement and thoroughly excellent entertainment flowed from the first whistle.

City scored the first goal and the last, through James McAtee and Taylor Bellis respectively, with strikes from United’s Ethan Galbraith and Facundo Pellistri providing the filling in the sandwich. The Blues had to complete the whole of the second half with ten men after Adrian Bernabe had been given his marching orders in the 35th minute.

The conditions at Leigh - overcast and chilly with teeming rain - were what could be described as perfect Mancunian weather for a game between these ancient cross-city rivals.

It doesn’t seem to matter whether it’s the Under-10s or the first teams in action, it is a fixture that captures all the passion and excitement of the beautful game.

Granted, the previous day’s senior derby at Old Trafford, by general consent, failed to catch fire as a contest but it was a vastly different story – from the off – in this meeting.

And it was City who made the brighter start with a couple of early raids which had the Reds’ defence battening down the hatches. The visitors were immediately into their stride and they underlined that good start with a goal from McAtee, a Salfordian, in just the 7th minute.

United were not by any means sluggish and within six minutes the early setback had been forgotten when the score was levelled. The Reds had hit back positively and when the ever-lively Hannibal was fouled in the area by City defender Luke Mbete, it was Galbraith who stepped forward to confidently fire the spot-kick past ‘keeper Cieran Slicker.

Already the match had eclipsed the disappointing senior match on Saturday and the action continued to unfold in United’s favour.

Ten minutes before the break, the Blues were dealt a severe blow when defender Bernabe, who had been responsible for setting up City’s early goal, was shown a red card by referee Andrew Kitchen following an awful studs-up lunge on Galbraith. Blues coach Enzo Maresca immediately reshuffled his team by replacing forward Felix Nmecha with defender Conrad Egan-Riley.

United were quick to capitalise on City’s misfortune, going in front just four minutes later when Pellistri took a short pass from Ethan Laird before calmly tapping the ball into the net for this third goal in as many games.

The end-to-end nature of the first half was certain to change with the visitors being restricted to some degree and so it appeared as the match unfolded with the Reds monopolising possession.

But as so often happens in these situations, it was the depleted side who struck the next blow. The Blues were awarded a corner which was taken by Tommy Doyle, grandson of former City greats Mike Doyle and Glyn Pardoe, and his kick found defender Bellis who took his chance with relish.

The goal noticeably increased City’s morale and they began to push forward in numbers. And the chances started to arrive, particularly from Doyle’s dangerous free-kicks. McAtee was incredibly unlucky with a shot from just inside United’s half which struck the post with Reds goalkeeper Paul Woolston scrambling back.

It was impossible to ignore this match for a second with the incidents continually piling up. And make no mistake this was a no favours asked, no favours given, full-blooded clash.

The fans of both clubs take great delight in claiming bragging rights from these games but on this occasion everyone should be well satisfied with a share of the points and the laurels.

MATCH DETAILS

United:
Woolston; Laird, Fish (c), Devine (Fernandez 77), Williams; Galbraith, Puigmal; Pellistri (Hugill 64), Hannibal, Shoretire; Elanga.

Subs not used: Mastny, Helm, McCann.
