Wenger set to rest Arsenal stars against Liverpool as he looks ahead to Bayern clash

Arsene Wenger is considering rotating his team for Sunday's FA Cup clash against Liverpool as he prioritises next week's visit of Bayern Munich.

The Arsenal manager is faced with a major selection dilemma this weekend as he faces two make-or-break clashes in the space of four days.

And the Gunners boss is set to make changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester United on Wednesday night for the visit of Brendan Rodgers' side.

German engineering: Wenger has placed more importance on the Champions League meeting with Bayern

The likes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Lukasz Fabianski, Mathieu Flamini, Carl Jenkinson, Nicklas Bendtner, Serge Gnabry and Lukas Podolski are all in line for first-team recalls as Wenger looks to keep his squad fresh for the task of taming the European champions in the Champions League.

Wojciech Szczesny, Olivier Giroud, Mesut Ozil and Mikel Arteta could all be rested for the clash against Liverpool.

Wenger, however, knows the FA Cup provides his side with a good chance of finally ending their trophy drought that dates back to 2005.

And with last season's humiliating defeat to Blackburn still fresh in the memory, Wenger is wary of tampering with his team too much this weekend.

Swede dreams: January signing Kim Kallstrom is in London trying to recover from injury

Meanwhile, loan signing Kim Kallstrom is back in England as he steps up his rehabilitation from a back injury.

The Swedish midfielder was Arsenal's only January arrival, but arrived from Spartak Moscow with the injury and isn't due back until next month.

He is now back at the club's London Colney HQ to compete a rehabilitation programme following treatment in his homeland.

Manchester City Injuries Haunt Manuel Pellegrini for FA Cup Visit of Chelsea

The good news for Manchester City is that Yaya Toure will be available to face Chelsea on Saturday, having somehow escaped sanction for kicking out at Wes Hoolahan.

So they will have one of their first-choice central midfield pairing available. The continuing absence of the other, Fernandinho, is a major blow, but it does perhaps clarify the issue for Manuel Pellegrini.

Before the meeting in the league last Monday, Pellegrini must have looked at the way his side was playing, steamrollering opponents, and decided that it made no sense to alter that, despite the obvious robustness of Chelsea's midfield.

He is a manager who, so far, at City, has favoured the attacking side of any debate and, all else being equal, the decision could hardly be questioned.

But all else wasn't equal. Fernandinho was injured and so City were robbed of half of that partnership that is essentially the paragon of a modern two-man centre: two players who are both powerful and energetic, both good on the ball, both capable of winning the ball back, both precise in their passing and both blessed with powerful shots.

Even better, they complement each other, Toure roaming, always looking to surge forwards, while Fernandinho is more disciplined, happy to sit back and fill space while his partner rampages.

For the league game against Chelsea, Pellegrini presumably reasoned that Demichelis's natural defensive instincts would provide a platform at the back of midfield for Toure, but his lack of mobility—and thus, at times, Toure's lack of discipline—was exposed.

Although City dominated possession, Chelsea dominated the game, rarely looking in defensive danger themselves while always threatening on the break.

Only once in the league this season had Pellegrini deployed a three-man central midfield—away at Chelsea—but unless he believes that James Milner can fill in for Fernandinho, that surely is how he'll play on Saturday.

Playing with Edin Dzeko and a half-fit Alvaro Negredo made City look one-dimensional too often resorting to the sort of direct play that defenders in the mould of John Terry and Gary Cahill gobble up.

Pellegrini could use David Silva more centrally off a front man but, with Samir Nasri still a major injury doubt, that leaves a shortfall on the left. Stevan Jovetic could play there, but that seems a needless over-complication that wouldn't necessarily bolster the centre of the field.

There is, though, a slight issue with personnel, with Javi Garcia probably still injured, and that means either Demichelis starting alongside Milner at the back of midfield with Toure just in front of them, or a recall for Jack Rodwell, who hasn't played since being taken off at halftime in City's 4-2 victory over Watford in the FA Cup.

It's not just about the formation, though: there also needs to be a change of mentality. City have become used to swarming over opponents, particularly at home, but they must play with greater discipline against a side as good at playing on the counter-attack as Chelsea.

After 27 minutes on the league meeting, Chelsea had a four-on-two break, stunning evidence both of their pace playing on the break and of the collapse of City's defensive system. That means the full-backs playing with great reserve, something that probably applies particularly to Pablo Zabaleta, if only because Aleksandar Kolarov's overlapping surges on the left are necessary to get the best out of David Silva, who naturally drifts infield.

But then there's the issue of what Chelsea do: did Jose Mourinho always intend to play 4-2-3-1 in the league game, or did he switch from 4-3-3, advancing Ramires and moving Willian centrally, when it emerged that Fernanidnho was missing?

City's biggest problem is that even if they can strengthen the centre, Mourinho has an immediate counter-move he can make that would again give Chelsea the advantage in that area.

Who says players don't care about the FA Cup? Teary Sturridge has to be consoled by Arsenal players after spurning chances in Emirates defeat

The FA Cup doesn't mean as much any more? Try telling that to Daniel Sturridge.

The Liverpool striker was left in tears on the Emirates Stadium turf after the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal, perhaps thinking of what could have been after missing several opportunities in the crucial fifth-round tie.

Kieran Gibbs and Lukasz Fabianski were trying to console the in-form forward, but they seemed to be doing little good.

Earlier in the game, Sturridge rushed over to Arsenal's goalkeeper to tie his shoelaces, looking to hurry up the Pole in his quest to secure a replay.

There was nothing doing for the England man, though. Arsenal will play Everton in the next round after goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski put them in the driving seat, before Steven Gerrard struck home a penalty for the visitors.

Liverpool felt they should have had another spot-kick when Luis Suarez was felled by Oxlade-Chamberlain, but referee Howard Webb waved away the claims.

Brendan Rodgers' side perhaps should have had the game dead and buried early on - flying out of the traps - taking the game to Arsenal after beating them 5-1 last weekend at Anfield.

But Sturridge spurned the best of their chances, and manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed his disappointment in the result itself and the finishing.

'The best team lost. It should have been 2-0 in the first 6-7 mins,' he told BT Sport after the game.

Liverpool ace Henderson shows he's still a Sunderland supporter at heart as he sits among fans to watch Capital One Cup final

Thousands of heartbroken Sunderland fans trudged their way back home from Wembley on Sunday after their heartbreaking Capital One Cup final defeat, and it was no different for one famous supporter - Jordan Henderson.

Despite leaving the Stadium of Light to join Liverpool in 2011, the 23-year-old midfielder was spotted in the crowd watching his boyhood club make their first trip to the home of English football in 16 years.

Henderson, who was born in Sunderland and played 79 times for the club, attempted to keep a low profile dressed in a black hoody and jacket, but eagle-eyed photographers still captured a picture of him among his fellow Mackems.

Things were looking up for Henderson and co when Fabio Borini fired Sunderland into the lead after just 10 minutes, and the Black Cats held the lead going into the half-time break.

But City's superiority eventually told and Manuel Pellegrini's side won thanks to world-class finishes from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri.

Sunderland supporters descended on London on Saturday afternoon before their first visit to Wembley in nearly 16 years, and were soon spilling out of pubs in Covent Garden and beyond as cup final excitement reached fever pitch.

The Mackems graced the home of English football for the first time since 1998, their Division One play-off final defeat to Charlton.

Around 40,000 fans made the journey down south, and many came on Saturday to save an early start the following day.

Some pubs around Covent Garden even had to close at around 9pm on Saturday night having ran out of alcohol.

Henderson isn't the only footballer to surreptitiously watch their favourite clubs among their fellow fans.

Ashley Young tried to remain incognito in the upper tier of St James's Park for Manchester United's game at Newcastle in October 2012, but despite his huge hooded coat he was spotted by astonished fans, posed for pictures and signed autographs.

No-one can deny that Steven Gerrard is Liverpool through-and-through, and the Reds' captain joined Liverpool’s fans for their match against Aston Villa in May 2011.

Sadly for Liverpool, Gerrard's support could not inspire anything other than a 1-0 defeat at Villa Park.

Is this the Arsenal bus which will parade Arsene Wenger's triumphant side if they beat Hull in FA Cup final at Wembley?

* A picture has emerged of a red bus emblazoned with the Arsenal crest
* The bus is embossed with the words 'The FA Cup Winners 2014'
* Arsenal face Hull City in Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley
* The Gunners, without a trophy in nine years, have also served traffic notices in Islington, north London, for a potential parade on Sunday

Is this the image that will spur Hull City on to win their first FA Cup?

Ahead of the Tigers' clash against Arsenal at Wembley on Saturday, a photo of a red bus embossed with the words 'Arsenal, The FA Cup Winners 2014' has emerged.

The leaked picture comes after it was revealed earlier in the week, that the Gunners, without silverware for nine seasons, have seemingly pre-empted victory against Hull be planning an open-top bus parade.

Traffic notices have been served in Islington, north London, with Arsene Wenger's side set to parade the FA Cup 24 hours after Saturday's final.
Arsenal made similar plans in 2006 before their Champions League final against Barcelona in Paris.

Wenger's men were beaten 2-1 and the parade was duly scrapped.

Notice: Arsenal are planning an FA Cup victory parade around the streets of North London on Sunday

Scrapped: Arsenal made plans for an open-top bus tour ahead of their Champions League defeat in 2006

The club's last bus celebration came in 2004 following 'The Invincibles' unbeaten Premier League season. They did not parade in the wake of their 2005 FA Cup victory over Manchester United; that was the last time the club won a trophy.

This weekend's planned parade would start at 11am at the Emirates Stadium before going through Drayton Park, Aubert Park, Highbury Park, Highbury Grove, St Paul's Road and into Upper Street and a reception at Islington Assembly Hall. The parade would conclude with a team appearance on the Emirates podium.
