UNITED U18 1

22/07/2014 21:27 - ManUtd.com, Adam Marshall
Trafford 0 United U18 1

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United's Under-18s won 1-0 at nearby FC Trafford.

A dry pitch in warm conditions did not help either side find their flow but Rashford, the liveliest performer in the second half, struck on 49 minutes to settle a closely-contested affair.

The Reds, playing in a training kit without numbers, traded early efforts that were comfortably saved with Jordan Thompson's header easily caught by Tom Read and the confident Dean Henderson making a comfortable stop from Shelton Payne.

Demetri Mitchell provided flashes of inspiration and swept a free-kick wide after being brought down around 25 yards from goal. Callum Gribbin replaced Thompson when he hobbled off after half an hour and almost made an instant impression. A quickly-taken set-piece allowed Joe Riley to cut in and feed Gribbin, who should have scored, but was thwarted by a superb close-range save by Read.

Charlie Scott soon offered a more menacing attempt than he mustered from long range earlier, hammering a drive just too high before Chris Palmer planted a header wide at the other end after a promising build-up. United hit back with Riley firing a fierce strike straight at Read and Scott firing over the bar on the stretch following a neat one-two with Gribbin.

The winner arrived four minutes after the interval when Rashford was left in the clear as Trafford tried to push up and he whistled a supreme finish past Read in emphatic fashion. Despite a number of substitutions for both sides, United continued to hold the upper hand with Scott stooping to head wide from a corner and Rashford having a penalty appeal waved away by the referee after being sent tumbling inside the area.

The home side pushed late on for an equaliser but substitute keeper George Dorrington stood firm, despite spilling a Rees Welsh drive, and a good work-out yielded a victory for Paul McGuinness' young charges, who fielded a couple of trialists in Oscar Borg and Ogo Obi.

United: Henderson (Dorrington 69); Riley (Reid 76), Tuanzebe, Williams, Borg (Borthwick-Jackson 57); Rashford, Scott, McTominay (Kehinde 64), Thompson, Mitchell (Dearnley 76); Croskery (Obi 57).

Newcastle U18 2 United U18 3

Demetri Mitchell grabbed a hat-trick as Manchester United’s Under-18s claimed their first win of the season at Newcastle United’s Little Benton training ground.

The Stretford-born youngster bagged two in the first half and completed his trio after the interval with a great finish past Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Goodman.

Coach Paul McGuinness brought his lads on the long journey north to Tyneside with a view to improving on last weekend’s season-opening stalemate against Bolton Wanderers at the Aon Training Complex.

And the mission was accomplished against Dave Watson’s side, who kept going until the final whistle was blown.**

United showed three changes from the side*who shared the points with*Bolton, with George Dorrington taking over from Dean Henderson between the sticks. Tyrell Warren took the defensive spot that trialist Oscar Borg occupied the previous Saturday, while Oliver Rathbone stepped in for Callum Gribbin, who was away on international duty.**

It was a cloudy, but pleasant afternoon on North Tyneside as the teams kicked off, watched by three or four dozen committed spectators.*

There was a tentative opening to the game from both sides, but it was the Reds who slowly gained the upper hand. A flurry of activity in the home area saw a trio of half-chances go begging, but in the 10th minute United got their noses in front.

A brief spell of pressure had the home defence struggling to clear and, when Zack Dearnley crossed from the right, Mitchell made no mistake from close range.

Five minutes later, Newcastle went close to finding the equaliser when Luke Charman’s header struck the crossbar.

But United stretched their lead in the 31st minute, with Mitchell grabbing his second goal of the game, this time from the penalty spot after Rathbone had been felled by Adam Laidler.

Sean Longstaff put the Magpies back in the picture with goal just as the referee was preparing to halt the proceedings for the half-time break.

The acceptable weather of the first half gave way to torrential rain after the break but that didn’t prevent Mitchell from claiming his third goal, in the 64th minute, with a cheeky lob over keeper*Woodman, after taking a pass from Devonte Redmond.

Newcastle were given the chance to reduce United’s advantage with 13 minutes remaining when they were awarded a penalty after Dorrington had fouled Jamie Holmes.

Jordan Storey took responsibility for the spot-kick but his firmly-hit shot thudded against Dorrington’s left upright.

Defender Kyle Cameron gave Newcastle a last-gasp glimmer of hope when he headed their second goal in added time, but it was too late to change the result.

United: Dorrington; Riley, Tuanzebe, Williams, Warren (Johnson 79); Rathbone, Borthwick-Jackson, Thompson (Redmond 49), Dearnley; McTominay; Mitchell. Subs not used: Henderson, Makela.

U18s: Liverpool 4 United 0

Manchester United’s Under-18s were made to rue a disappointing first-half performance as the Reds suffered a 4-0 defeat away to rivals Liverpool.

The hosts raced into an early 2-0 lead with strikes from Harry Wilson and Jerome Sinclair inside the first 16 minutes, before Will Marsh scored the pick of the goals to put his side further ahead. Ryan Kent rounded off the scoring for the hosts in the second half.

Stretford-born Demetri Mitchell again led United's line after scoring a hat-trick against the Magpies last week and the visitors started brightly with defender Joe Riley looking to get forward. However, Liverpool*winger Sergi Canos provided an early scare when he forced a good save from recalled United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Canos turned provider on 14 minutes when, after patient build-up by Liverpool, he produced a pin-point cross for Wilson to stab the home side into a deserved lead.

United looked to respond immediately and came within inches of equalising, as Scott McTominay’s effort struck the post, before his rebound was scrambled to safety.

That was a missed chance the visitors would regret, as Liverpool raced away to double their lead at the other end. Canos’ deflected cross fell for an unmarked Sinclair, whose cushioned header found the corner.

The goal of the game came on 25 minutes, as more impressive play from Wilson saw the midfielder square the ball to Marsh, and the former-Crewe man drove the ball home from the edge of the area.

The half-time whistle prompted a double change from the United bench as Tyler Reid and Marcus Rashford were introduced, and the pair immediately looked to change the pattern of play after the break.

Paul McGuinness' players looked more composed in possession thereafter, and had a good chance to pull a goal back through Zak Dearnley, whose low shot was well saved.

Liverpool were a constant threat on the counter attack as United went in search of a consolation, and they scored a fourth goal on 77 minutes, as Canos went through and unselfishly squared the ball for Kent to tap into an empty net.

Despite encouraging play late on,*United will be disappointed by the defeat, with the next opportunity to make amends coming on 13 September when Stoke visit the Aon Training Complex.*

United: Henderson; Riley, Tuanzebe, Williams, Warren; Redmond, Borthwick-Jackson, Rathbone, McTominay, Dearnley; Mitchell. Subs not used: Dorrington, Johnson.

U18s: United 0 Middlesbrough 3

Manchester United's Under-18s*suffered a 3-0 home loss against Middlesbrough at the Aon Training Complex.

After*going down*1-0 to*leaders*Manchester City last weekend,*Paul McGuinness' youngsters were beaten by the second-placed visitors. *

George Dorrington started in goal with Dean Henderson injured in the derby and he was called into action to produce a diving save to frustrate Jordan Jowers. United should really have taken the lead during a goalmouth scramble that saw Joe Fryer pull off three vital saves. The keeper denied Demetri Mitchell and Marcus Rashford and Rashford was guilty of failing to get enough power in a third attempt with the goal at his mercy.

Jordan Thompson also worked Fryer with a low drive and Ruairi Croskery sent an acrobatic overhead kick off target as*the Reds continued to press, Mitchell also failing to*find an accurate finish that his electrifying run deserved. Unfortunately,*United's top scorer*did not reappear after the interval due to injury.

Scott McTominay took his place and Tyrell Warren was introduced around the hour*mark to replace Croskery.*There were few opportunities as the sides cancelled each other out, although Williams displayed his blistering turn of speed in defence on a couple of occasions.

Williams*was out of luck when his clearance was latched onto by Jowers and his right-footed shot was headed past Dorrington by the centre-back. It was a blow but there should have been an instant equaliser after good work by Joe Riley and McTominay but Rashford's close-range header bounced back off the bar.

Instead, Alex Paterson ran through to execute a perfect lob over the stranded Dorrington to effectively seal the points for the Teessiders and a clear chance for a third was passed up before Dorrington let a Tyler*Reid backpass bounce beyond him to register a second own goal of the afternoon.

United clearly missed Mitchell, who remains the only*player to score for the side in the division this term, as Middlesbrough were rarely troubled in defence in the second half.*

United: Dorrington; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Thompson, Redmond, Rashford, Mitchell (McTominay 46); Croskery (Warren 60).

Report by Adam Marshall

Manchester United's Under-18s enjoyed an evening outing at Altrincham's J. Davidson Stadium as second-half strikes by Marcus Rashford and Ruairi Croskery earned a 2-0 triumph over Wolves.

Both efforts came from close range following incisive moves to clinch a third victory of the campaign and coach Paul McGuinness will be pleased his youngsters took their opportunity to impress in front of a crowd as well as the live MUTV cameras, particularly with leading scorer Demetri Mitchell ruled out through injury.

The first half was a lively affair, even if the chances dried up as it wore on. The two sides looked committed under the lights with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson spurning a glorious early chance when his glancing header from a Joe Riley cross went wide on seven minutes.

Dean Henderson did well to thwart Regan Upton and saw Mekhi Leacock-McLeod find the side-netting with the rebound and the visitors went close again when Jesse Devers was unable to convert a Ryan Rainey cross-shot. However, United came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first period as Riley's shot deflected into Croskery's path and, although he scrapped his way past keeper Harry Burgoyne, the angle was too tight and he could only hit the outside of a post.

In the second half, Devers tried another airborne attempt but, again, could not connect properly while a Riley shot lacked conviction following a cut-back by Devonte Redmond. After Aaron Hayden robbed Callum Gribbin to shoot straight at Dean Henderson, the Reds applied some pressure themselves. Axel Tuanzebe's through ball released Rashford but, despite illustrating his superb acceleration, his finish lacked control and flew wide.

Rashford's next effort was more productive as he supplied a simple finish from inside the six-yard box following more good work by the impressive Riley, who latched onto a Gribbin pass to outstrip Hayden, to notch his first goal of the season.

Zach Dearnley replaced the goalscorer with 16 minutes remaining as Wolves struggled to press in search of an equaliser. Croskery was guilty of a handball as the hosts looked for a killer second goal and it arrived when Ro-Shaun Williams got the ball forward and Dearnley unselfishly teed up Croskery for another straightforward finish with only five minutes left.

The Reds have arranged two other fixtures at the Moss Lane venue, against Newcastle United and Liverpool, and there were plenty of positives to take from the night's work.

United: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Thompson, Redmond, Gribbin (McTominay 80), Rashford (Dearnley 74); Croskery. Subs not used: Dorrington, Warren, Rathbone.

Under-18s: Blackburn 1 United 4

Oliver Rathbone helped himself to a hat-trick as United’s Under-18s stormed to an impressive victory at sun-drenched Brockhall on Saturday.

The Reds took a while to get into their stride for most of the first half but eventually brushed aside a lively Rovers’ team, coached by former United defender Brian Carey.

With the first 45 minutes almost over, the Reds grabbed the lead when Rathbone unleashed a 25-yarder which found the net despite Rovers’ keeper Andrew Fisher getting his hands to the ball.

The goal certainly seemed to give United a boost and the Reds opened the second half with a more positive approach. Their plans, however received a jolt in the 63rd minute when Rovers’ substitute Lewis Mansell hooked home the equaliser after some sloppy play from the Reds.

Two minutes later and United were back in front and it was Rathbone celebrating again after tapping home from close-range. The Reds had claimed the upper ground and four minutes later they increased their lead when Ruairi Croskery beat the Rovers’ defence to Joe Riley’s corner to head United’s third goal.

Victory looked assured from this point, but icing was applied to the cake three minutes later when Rathbone latched onto Callum Gribbin’s through ball to complete his hat-trick against the club his father, Mick, served as a full-back in the 1980s.

Blackburn defender Matthew Platt did well trying to rally his side in the closing stages with a couple of terrific strikes that brought the best out of United keeper Dean Henderson.

UNITED: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Dearnley (Whelan 77), Riley, Redmond, Rathbone; Gribbin, Croskery. Subs: Byrne, Makela, Thompson L., Gomes.

Youth team flying out to Slovakia again

Manchester United have arranged a trip for the youth team to Slovakia towards the end of October.

Paul McGuinness is set to take charge of a side containing his Under-18s and other younger members of the squad for matches against Banik Ostrava and Banska Bystrica. Both friendlies will take place at the Poprad Stadium.

The excursion is becoming a regular date in the calendar for the Reds - Jack Barmby scored a hat-trick against Konoplyvov in 2011 while Paddy McNair, Andreas Pereira, Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson were in the travelling party in 2012. Last November, Devonte Redmond captained an Under-17 squad in matches against*MFK Ruzomberok and Sparta Prague.
