Sam Johnstone admits he's unsure about Manchester United future after missing out on Tottenham clash

* Sam Johnstone was left on the bench for Manchester United's 1-0 victory against Tottenham
* Louis van Gaal opted to select Argentine Sergio Romero on Saturday
* Johnstone admits he has been left in the dark over the decision

Manchester United's goalkeeping farce has left Sam Johnstone in the dark over his future at Old Trafford after he missed out on a ‘dream’ debut.

Johnstone, 22, was on standby to play against Tottenham at the weekend after manager Louis van Gaal decided to take Real Madrid target David de Gea out of the firing line until the transfer window closes, having already told back-up keepers Victor Valdes and Anders Lindegaard that they can leave the club.

Van Gaal ended up picking new signing Sergio Romero ahead of Johnstone, who sat on the bench after featuring in every game on United’s pre-season tour, while De Gea, Valdes and Lindegaard watched on from the stands.

Sam Johnstone in the dark over his future at Manchester United after he missed out on a ‘dream’ debut

The Dutchman is expected to sign another new goalkeeper if De Gea joins Madrid, but the uncertainty means that Johnstone has no idea if he will be allowed to return to Preston on loan, having helped his hometown team win promotion to the Championship through the playoffs last season.

‘I’m not sure,’ said Johnstone. ‘Nothing has been said really. We’re waiting on different situations and have to see how it pans out.

‘I need to play games but on the other hand I’m contracted here to Manchester United. It (the future of other keepers) does have a knock-on effect on me.

‘I appreciated that Preston waited until last weekend. They had to bring someone in because they had their first game on Sunday. But if I get the chance to go out on loan I would still like to go back.

‘I finished last season on a high playing in the Play-off Final at Wembley with my hometown club so I need to kick on from that, but hopefully if I am involved a lot I can still learn here.

‘There are four keepers – David, Sergio, Victor and Anders – and it’s great for me picking their brains and trying to improve.

‘They may have individual problems but they don’t bring them to training. The manager has said that David has gone about his business in the right way, and we stick together.

‘Whoever plays, the other keepers are behind him. And you have to realise that we are working with the goalkeeper who is going to play to prepare him for the game. We are friends but there is a healthy rivalry.’

Johnstone’s hopes of a first-team debut for United were dashed when Van Gaal informed his players on Thursday that Romero had got the nod, even though he had only been training with the club for a few days. The 28-year-old Argentine performed well, however, and kept a clean sheet against Spurs.

‘I’ve been at the club since I was 10 so it would be a dream come true to play in the first team,’ said Johnstone. ‘I played in all four games on the tour and thought I did well, but the manager has gone with his decision and you have to respect that. I was fully behind Sergio.

‘It is not easy, no matter how much experience he has got, to come in. He’s only been with us for two weeks, not played a game, but had to go into the first home game of the season at Old Trafford, and I thought he did well.

‘It was a difficult decision for the manager – he said it to everyone. But he obviously knew who was going to play, and we found out on Thursday. That was good because it gave whoever was going to play time to get their head around it and prepare for the game.’

Sam Johnstone to be loaned out by Manchester United with Fulham, Preston and Wolves interested

* Johnstone was given the go-ahead on Tuesday, with the Championship trio among the clubs interested
* He enjoyed a successful loan spell at Preston and kept a clean sheet in the play-off final as the club achieved promotion to the Championship
* Johnstone has represented England at Under 16, 17, 19 and 20 levels

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone has been told by manager Louis van Gaal that he can go out on loan.

Sportsmail understands that Johnstone was given the go-ahead on Tuesday, with Fulham, Wolves and Preston North End among the clubs interested.

With David de Gea wavering over a new deal at the start of the season, Johnstone looked a shoo-in to get some first-team appearances under his belt.

But Van Gaal opted to play Sergio Romero instead, and when De Gea put pen to paper on a long-term deal, Johnstone saw his chances disappear.

Van Gaal refused to let him leave for a Championship club, with Johnstone’s agent Jordan Segal saying in August: ‘Sam just wants to play football but Manchester United are holding him back and not even playing him.

‘He is a young goalkeeper and it is time for him to play regularly. If that is not at Manchester United, then it has to be elsewhere. This is an example of young English talent being held back by Van Gaal.’

Sam Johnstone helped Preston win the play-off final after a successful loan spell with the club last year

Johnstone penned a new three-year deal in January 2014 under former United boss David Moyes.

The goalkeeper — who represented England at Under 16, 17, 19 and 20 level — enjoyed a successful loan spell at Preston North End last season and kept a clean sheet in the play-off final as the club achieved promotion to the Championship.

Aberdeen want Fergie to help get Man Utd keeper Johnstone

Scotland club Aberdeen are hoping to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, with the help of former Red Devils and Dons manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 23-year-old, who has enjoyed loan spells at Oldham Athletic, Yeovil Town, Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers and Preston North End, is unlikely to feature in Jose Mourinho's plans next season.

According to the Daily Express, Pittodrie boss Derek McInnes is currently looking to add a keeper to his squad and has identified Johnstone as a possible candidate.

McInnes is hoping that Ferguson could help him convince Johnstone to join the Scottish club he guided to unbridled success in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

JOHNSTONE HAPPY WITH PRE-SEASON OUTINGS

Sam Johnstone hopes he can build on his two pre-season performances against Wigan Athletic and Borussia Dortmund, with the Manchester United goalkeeper admitting to having mixed feelings after each match.

Johnstone started both games and made some solid saves in each, but the stopper said all the players were frustrated by the 1-4 end result against Dortmund on the back of a 2-0 win over the Latics.

"Playing for Man United is my dream, so it’s been really good, but we were disappointed with the result," he told ManUtd.com. "Both games have been very different. It was pleasing to beat Wigan but Dortmund had played four or five games before they played us, so they were a little bit sharper than us.

"Coming to this side of the world [China] on tour is great; it’s a fresh start for everyone to show the manager what they can do in training and the matches. I’m grateful to have played in the last two games, but I want to build on that and keep doing my best."

Asked about playing behind new signing Eric Bailly, Johnstone enthused: "Eric is new to the club but he has settled quickly and well. He’s strong and not scared to get stuck in and he doesn’t take any messing."

Johnstone spoke of working with Jose Mourinho and his new coaches, explaining how their encouragement on the training pitch has given the squad confidence.

"It’s been very good," he continued. "The lads are loving it and it’s great to work with the new goalkeeping coaches and get the work in during pre-season. Hopefully it sets us up for the season ahead.

"The manager encourages the lads to go out and play and express themselves on the training pitch and take that into matches. He’s behind the lads and gives us the confidence to express ourselves. That’s why we’re gutted about the result against Dortmund because we wanted to go out and make our mark."

JOHNSTONE HOPING TO CATCH THE EYE

Sam Johnstone is hoping his fine form in the Reserves impresses manager Jose Mourinho as he naturally seeks first-team football.

The 23-year-old was Man of the Match in the 1-0 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League 2 opener on Monday night, making several top saves and setting up Demi Mitchell's late winner with a quick kick downfield.

Afterwards, he spoke to MUTV as he strives to build on pre-season when he appeared for Mourinho's men against Wigan Athletic and Borussia Dortmund.

"Of course, it's good to be around the first team," he said. "Obviously, you never know when a chance might come but, on the other hand, I do need to play football. I've been on loan in previous seasons and enjoyed it, playing men's football for points in front of crowds. You can't beat that.

"But, like I've said, I'm here and, every time I step on the pitch, I'm here to do a job and hopefully show the manager what I can do and push Sergio [Romero] and David [De Gea].

"I'm happy we won. The lads put in a great effort as we played an experienced Leicester side. We've got a young team but we dug in, worked hard and got the reward for it. I've worked with Warren Joyce for a while and he gets you working hard. I enjoy playing for him and always give it my best."

Default Re: Samuel Luke "Sam" Johnstone

TIME IS STILL ON JOHNSTONE'S SIDE

The life of any young goalkeeper rising through the ranks at a top club can be a hard one. There is an obvious need for patience, married with the desperation for a chance to impress in order to prove you are worthy of the no.1 jersey.

In the opening round of Premier League fixtures, the average age for the man between the posts was over 31. More than half were in their thirties and the youngest starter in nets was 24-year-old Thibaut Courtois of Chelsea.

Sam Johnstone, at 23, has been close to making his first-team bow for the Reds for some time. He was on the bench for the opening six games of last term and, despite keeping goal in pre-season fixtures, still yearns for his competitive debut for the club he loves.

"It would mean everything," he tells ManUtd.com at the Aon Training Complex, with a determined look in his eyes. "I've been with the club since I was 10 years old and have grown up here. That's what you're waiting for and you've got to be ready for it so, obviously, it would mean everything for both me and my family to make that competitive debut.

"There's been so much hard work, with the support of my family taking me everywhere, before finally moving away from home, doing my schooling here and training. I went to The Cliff and gradually worked my way up from there. The next thing, I've been here 12-13 years. It flies by. There has been a lot of dedication, I've missed out on a lot of things but I wouldn't ever change the position I am in."

That position, as third-choice goalkeeper for one of the biggest clubs in the world, might be seen as some achievement for a young man from Preston or, at the very least, certainly the start of bigger things. When the competition for the gloves is provided by arguably the best on the planet and Argentina's first choice, there is clearly no easy route into Jose Mourinho's side.

This is what you would expect at a club like United but it is not like Johnstone is shying away from the challenge. Far from it, in fact.

"I don't think there's any difference between me and, say, Marcus [Rashford] and Jesse [Lingard]," he contends. "They want to play for Manchester United. I want to play for Manchester United. I'm going to have to bide my time a little bit, being in a position where I've got one of the best goalkeepers in the world ahead of me but I will use that to my advantage and learn from it.

"Of course, it is even more difficult as a keeper and people don't seem to properly understand that. You've got one position in the team and that is taken up by a world-class player. I've been learning from him since he first came and training with him every day, and the coaches and Sergio [Romero], is only helping me.

"To be honest, I've always said that being on loan and working with different goalkeeping coaches also gives you different ideas to take on board. Some work and some don't but I've always learned something from each coach and put it into my own game. It's a good position to be working with different coaches as you can learn as much as possible from them, particularly with ex-players."

Remarkably, there has been some criticism of Johnstone for his current role at United. He has been travelling with the first-team squad and working with De Gea and Romero in the build-up to matches, reflecting his seniority. It would appear a positive move to keep him involved but, confusingly, this has been viewed negatively in some quarters.

"It doesn't bother me and you're always going to get it," said Johnstone. "Social media is massive and you do see everything. You can't not see it when everything is online. But people don't know what is going on behind the scenes at the club and the progress you are making.

"Of course, it's a long road and I have to be patient. I'm still only 23 and learning every day. I do see comments on social media, I even saw it said: 'You're a goalkeeper coach' and stuff like that. It's the opposite. I'm learning from the coaches, from David and Sergio. So people say things but don't really know the inside story. I think it's wrong but people are entitled to their opinion.

"It's good to be around the squad, I'm in the first-team dressing room and travelling as the manager wants to take three goalkeepers to each game," he added. "I feel involved and, even in the warm-ups before the game, the manager can see you. It was great to play against Wigan and Borussia Dortmund in pre-season because it gives you a little taste for it and I want more and want to impress the manager as well."

One thing you can never accuse Johnstone of, having interviewed him several times, is lacking ambition. He proved himself out on loan and enjoyed real success with hometown club Preston North End, securing promotion via the play-offs in 2015. He knows he remains one of the best young keepers in England and his time to show that will come.

"I'm not settling to just sit here," he stressed. "I'm too young to do that. I have been around for a while and people probably think I'm older than 23 as I've had my loan spells, played first-team football, kept a clean sheet at Wembley for Preston and achieved promotion.

"I've been out and done it and, on a smaller scale, replicated what it's like at United when I was at Preston. They wanted to get promoted and United want to win the league. There was pressure being towards the top of the table and bidding to stay there before a one-off game at Wembley to win promotion. They were great experiences to bring back here and help me mature to become a better goalkeeper.

"I have experienced a lot in the last few years," he continued. "Now it's about using those experiences to push myself and push Sergio and David and hopefully show the manager what I can do. I want to play football and, at this moment of my career, it's going to be a bit different for me because I am on the learning side of things. But I'm learning from the best in the world at the biggest club. My dream is to play for Manchester United and it's all about timing. It's going to be very difficult but it's my dream. I've worked towards that every day since I was 10 years old."

Mourinho has already pointed out that United's busy schedule, including the League Cup and Europa League, will present opportunities for more of his players. Johnstone certainly feels ready if the call does come from the Reds boss at any stage.

"My job is to show that I can do it," he explained. "Hopefully, he trusts me to do it because I'm learning every day from him as well. He is a very experienced manager, a good guy and a great coach. There are a lot of games coming up and I've always got to be ready. Anything can happen in football."

Johnstone can become the 10th member of the 2011 FA Youth Cup-winning side to make the breakthrough into the first team. If he does, it will be well worth the wait and a moment to savour for the talented keeper and all those who value the importance of homegrown talent.

Nottingham Forest and Cardiff enter chase for in-demand Manchester United reserve keeper Sam Johnstone

* Sam Johnstone has not played a competitive game for Manchester United
* Cardiff and Nottingham Forest the latest clubs to show interest in him
* Jose Mourinho has already rejected bids from Aston Villa, Fulham, Wigan, Huddersfield and Bristol City

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is wanted by Nottingham Forest and Cardiff City.

United have already turned down bids for Johnstone from Aston Villa, Fulham, Wigan, Huddersfield and Bristol City during the window but the Championship rivals are hoping to conclude a loan before the window closes.

Jose Mourinho has been impressed by the 23-year-old and his attitude. He believes Johnstone has a future at United and can push David de Gea and Sergio Romero but needs more competitive experience first.

Johnstone, a member of United's 2011 FA Youth Cup winning side, has been at United since he was ten.

He was on the bench for the opening six games of last term and figured in pre-season but has still to make his competitive debut for United. However, Johnstone has been encouraged by coaching staff that he can make the breakthrough.

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce targeting move for Manchester United keeper Sam Johnstone

* Steve Bruce is a January target for Manchester United's Sam Johnstone
* Jose Mourinho rates Johnstone but wants him to gain experience on loan
* Johnstone has had spells with Preston North End and Doncaster Rovers
* United are looking to offer the keeper a contract extension before January

Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is a January target for new Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce.

Bruce has Pierluigi Gollini, Jed Steer and Mark Bunn on his books but they have struggled to convince in a shaky start to the season.

Bruce knows a strong defence is key to Villa's resurgence and wants a settled presence behind his team. Johnstone comes highly recommended and is well regarded in the game.

Steve Bruce is targeting Manchester United's Sam Johnstone, who is rated by Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho rates the 23-year-old also but United's manager wants Johnstone to gain greater experience on loan so that he can provide stronger competition for David de Gea and Sergio Romero.

Johnstone has had spells with Preston North End and Doncaster Rovers in recent years but a move to high-profile Villa would be viewed as a step up.

United fielded enquiries from 10 clubs in August who were keen to take him on loan with the likes of Fulham, Wolves, Leeds, Bristol City, Wigan and Nottingham Forest among those to ask.

Johnstone only has 18 months left on contract and United are looking to offer him an extension before January.

Speaking in the summer, Johnstone said: 'I've been on loan in previous seasons and enjoyed it, playing men's football for points in front of crowds. You can't beat that.

'But, like I've said, I'm here and, every time I step on the pitch, I'm here to do a job and hopefully show the manager what I can do and push Sergio [Romero] and David [De Gea].'

Villa, meanwhile, have approached United coach Warren Joyce to become Steve Bruce's assistant though Stephen Clemence of Hull City is also in the frame.

Hull are expected to confirm Mike Phelan as their permanent manager later today on a £1.5m a year deal.
