'We ran out of steam!': Man United captain Harry Maguire admits his team are running on fumes after a 16-day break caused by the Covid outbreak in their camp, with HALF of their stars still recovering from the virus and limping to draw at Newcastle

* Manchester United salvaged a 1-1 draw at Premier League strugglers Newcastle
* It was their first outing for 16 days after a coronavirus outbreak closed their HQ
* The Red Devils were indebted to goalkeeper David De Gea for series of fine saves

Skipper Harry Maguire admitted a 16-day Covid-19 break had done Manchester United no favours after they salvaged a 1-1 draw at Premier League strugglers Newcastle.

The Red Devils needed a 71st-minute equaliser from half-time substitute Edinson Cavani to emerge with anything to show for their efforts at St James' Park on Monday night as interim manager Ralf Rangnick was forced to abandon his favoured 4-2-2-2 formation, and were indebted to goalkeeper David de Gea for a series of fine saves.

It was their first outing for 16 days after a coronavirus outbreak which prompted the club to close their Carrington training complex - Victor Lindelof was absent on Tyneside after testing positive - but it was the lowly Magpies, playing for the fourth time in 16 days and depleted by Covid and injuries, who very nearly secured just a second win of the campaign.

Maguire told Manchester United's official website: 'No 16-day break in the middle of a football season is going to help you.

'The training ground has been shut and half the lads playing today are recovering from the virus, so of course it's not going to help us.

'We've had people with symptoms, people without symptoms - it's been a real mixed bag for everyone at the football club and it's been a tough time.

'But you can't make excuses for sloppy passes and the opportunities that we had, especially in the first half.

Harry Maguire (L) admitted a 16-day Covid-19 break had done Manchester United no favours. Maguire and his United team-mates could only take a point away from Newcastle on Monday

'We've got to stay on the ball, we've got to stay active and we've got to play the ball in their half and we didn't manage to do that.

'You can look at that and ask whether the last 16 days had a big impact on that because it looked like we ran out of steam out there.

'A point in the end is a fair result, but it's a result that we're disappointed with.'

Rangnick's men fell behind to Allan Saint-Maximin's superb seventh-minute opener and were criminally negligent in possession as they attempted to work their way back into the game.

Cavani and Jadon Sancho were introduced at the break with Fred and Mason Greenwood making way in a change of shape and the Uruguay international struck with 19 minutes remaining to snatch a point.

However, Jacob Murphy was denied by a post and Miguel Almiron by a stunning De Gea save as time ran down to leave the visitors counting their blessings.

Maguire added: 'David's on great form at the minute. In big moments - it always seems to be late on in games that he's always there to produce for us.'

The draw left United seven points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal with two games in hand ahead of Thursday's clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, although Maguire is convinced they will be better for a tough evening in the north east.

He said: 'I'm sure 90 minutes will have benefitted every single player out there.

'The Burnley game and the Wolves game are coming up thick and fast and we've got to play better than we have done tonight to make sure we get three points.'

Default Re: Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire continues to be on the outside looking in under Ralf Rangnick after starting as a sub at Brentford... he faces an uphill battle to regain his status as the club's leader with German boss in no rush to bring him back into his XI

* There was still no place in the starting line-up for defender Harry Maguire though
* The United captain has struggled to regain his place under Ralf Rangnick
* Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof have been the German's preferred pairing
* Maguire faces an uphill task to assert himself as the club's on-field leader again

While discussing Harry Maguire’s status as Manchester United captain, there was a comment from Ralf Rangnick that, a few days on, looks potentially a little more significant than it appeared at the time.

‘Right now, I don’t see a reason to do that, because Harry has been the captain so far and as long as Harry is playing, he will be the captain,’ he said last week when asked if the armband would be handed to Cristiano Ronaldo. ‘If he’s not playing, then someone else will have to be the captain.’

Initially it sounded like a backing Maguire and reiterating of his status as United’s principle leader.

The last two games, though, have suggested that the reference to whether or not Maguire is playing may have been pointed.

Because he has not been captain for that exact reason – he has been out of the starting team and instead named on the bench.

There were claims pre-match that Maguire is not yet fully fit following a recent rib injury which emerged before the teams were announced, perhaps to get ahead of the inevitable discussion that would follow.

Though if that was just an attempt at damage limitation rather than the full picture, then this is an unusual position for Maguire in his Old Trafford career.

In his first season following his £80m move from Leicester, Maguire was a virtual ever-present and only missing from the squad when given a well-earned breather.

Last term, he was an unused sub for a dead rubber Europa League tie against Real Sociedad, rested again for lesser occasions or missing only through injury.

Harry Maguire once again started on the bench in Manchester United's win over Brentford. The England star eventually came on as a substitute with United cruising to the three points. Maguire faces an uphill task to assert himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet

A couple of injuries have troubled him this season but, for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa and Wednesday night’s to Brentford, Maguire has found himself on the outside looking in despite being fit enough to be in the squad.

Rangnick has instead preferred to pair Raphael Varane with Victor Lindelof, not that United have looked any more secure or been less reliant on David de Gea without Maguire.

Though he was an eventual second-half sub and also unlikely to have been happy with his less than convincing defending before Ivan Toney’s consolation goal for Brentford.

Interestingly, Maguire came on with a note bearing instructions but did not immediately get the armband off Bruno Fernandes in exchange despite what Rangnick said previously.

He was made to wait to get that back and had it wrapped around his bicep for the game’s closing stages.

Whether he is not yet back to 100 per cent or not, a spell out of the United side has felt like it has been coming for some time for Maguire.

He is among the England players who have struggled to recapture their previous form following an emotionally and physically draining Euro 2020.

And he has played his part, though is far from alone, in why United having the second worst defensive record in the top nine and have shipped more goals than bottom-of-the-table Burnley.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fiercely loyal to Maguire. He would be. He signed him and made him captain.

Rangnick, though, has come in with fresh eyes and is perhaps seeing things differently.

On the evidence of his last couple of line-ups at least, a little more like Maguire’s critics who have included United greats Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand and, on Wednesday, Jaap Stam.

Suggestions that Rangnick singled out Maguire for criticism during his assessment of the United squad have been firmly dismissed from within Old Trafford.

Though the longer Maguire remains missing when he picks his team the questions, at least, will continue.

Harry Maguire admits Man United's performances have been 'up and down this season' before issuing a rallying cry to fans ahead of the second half of the campaign... as the England star makes the most of his break in Dubai

* Harry Maguire has conceded Manchester United's form has been 'up and down'
* The Red Devils are out of the title race and in a battle to secure a top-four finish
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November following an alarming run of form
* But the Red Devils are still competing in the Champions League and FA Cup
* Maguire issued a rallying call to his team-mates and fans during the winter break

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has admitted his side's performances have been 'up and down a lot' this season as he issued a rallying call going into the second half of the campaign.

The Red Devils are currently fourth in the Premier League table but Arsenal and Tottenham can go above them in the race for Champions League football if they win their games in hand.

In another turbulent campaign for the club, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November after United won just one of their last seven league games under the Norwegian.

The Old Trafford hierarchy brought in Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season as their search for a new permanent manager continues with the German taking on a consultancy role in the summer.

Harry Maguire has admitted Man United's performances have been 'up and down' this season. The Red Devils are currently fourth in the Premier League table but are well out of the title race

There has once again been fierce criticism of Maguire's performances, as well as the displays of the rest of the squad, and the England defender was quick to acknowledge that they'd been far from their best.

While praising goalkeeper David de Gea, who has been the standout player again, in an interview with the club's official website, Maguire said: 'He [De Gea] has been amazing.

'I think a lot of people this year haven't had the most consistent of seasons, we've been up and down a lot, as outfielders and as a team performance.'

Heaping more praise on the Spanish stopper, Maguire added: 'But for sure David has been there, week in week out, producing big saves for us in big moments.

'It doesn't surprise me because David is David, he's a world class goalkeeper.'

Despite the gloom around Old Trafford, there is still optimism that United can salvage their season.

They may be well out of the Premier League title race already but they can still secure a top-four finish and challenge for the FA Cup and Champions League.

The Red Devils face a mouth-watering European last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain and have been drawn to play Middlesbrough in the FA Cup's fourth round.

In an attempt to galvanise his team-mates and the club's supporters ahead of the restart of the domestic campaign next week, Maguire added: 'It's really important that we stay in the competitions for as long as we can and find ourselves challenging for trophies at the end of the season.

'In two months' time we want to be challenging in the league, for the top four positions, and then in both competitions in the cups.

'We are in a position where we are not happy with the league position, but for sure we have lots of things to play for, and lots of momentum to gain, and lots of things to improve on.

'From now until the end of the season we have got to work together as a group, work together as a club and make sure we reach our aims.'

Maguire was pictured out in Dubai earlier this week taking part in a golfing Pro-Am with England team-mate Jordan Pickford as they enjoy some time away from the pitch.

'I'll rate the next manager by how fast he benches Harry Maguire': Man United fans rip into 'Burnley's man of the match' and call for him to be stripped of the captaincy after he cost Raphael Varane a goal AND made a big mistake for Clarets' equaliser

* Manchester United dropped more points in a disappointing 1-1 draw with Burnley
* Raphael Varane thought he'd scored his first United goal to put them 1-0 up
* The goal was chalked off after Maguire made a block in an offside position
* Maguire then made a big mistake as Jay Rodriguez scored the vital equaliser
* United fans have ripped into Maguire's latest disappointing display for the club

Manchester United fans have called for Harry Maguire to be stripped of the captain's armband after his latest disappointing performance for the club.

Maguire made two costly blunders as they dropped points on the road in their 1-1 draw with bottom of the league Burnley.

Raphael Varane thought he had headed in the opener for Ralf Rangnick's side only for VAR to overturn the call after Maguire, standing in an offside position, blocked off the run of Jay Rodriguez.

Paul Pogba put United ahead before Burnley hit back just two minutes into the second-half.

Harry Maguire made two costly mistakes in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Burnley

Wout Weghorst skilfully turned Maguire before playing in Rodriguez who held off the United skipper to slip home an equaliser and earn a 1-1 draw.

Later in the game, Maguire was booked for purposefully bringing down Rodriguez while the striker was about to run in on goal, with debate surrounding whether he should have been sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity.

It was a miserable night for Maguire who has suffered with poor form throughout the season

Fans have been calling for Maguire to be stripped of the captain's armband throughout the season

United fans have taken to social media to rip into Maguire's performance with one fan labelling him as 'Burnley's man of the match.'

RizzyUtd hopes whoever becomes Manchester United's permanent manager replaces Maguire as he tweeted: 'I'll rate the next manager by how fast he benches Maguire and strips him of captaincy.'

Impressionist Al Foran commented: 'Get that armband off Harry Maguire aswell, he's going to make more costly errors like that shocking one tonight.'

United fan page Stretford Paddock said: 'Maguire just isn't good enough,' while another Twitter user went as far to say: 'Harry Maguire is the worst signing in this club's history.'

David Scott hit out at the amount United spent to sign Maguire from Leicester in August 2019, as he said: 'The biggest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that Maguire was worth £80m.'

A lot of United fans were not happy with Maguire's mistake which cost Varane what would have been his first goal for the club since joining from Real Madrid last summer.

Twitter user ralfzii posted after Burnley's equaliser: 'From denying Varane a goal to this. Harry Maguire is Burnley's man of the match.'

MaxUtd commented: 'Harry Maguire robbed Varane of a goal and was at fault for the Burnley goal. Get this fraud out my club.'

Another user posted: 'Harry Maguire really cost Varane a goal, cleansheet and Man Utd the 3 points. And he’s the captain.'

Mark Goldbridge from fan channel the United Stand posted: 'I'd be fuming with Maguire if I'm Varane for that. He was scoring the goal anyway and Maguire doesn't need to do it.'

Tekker360 hit out at Maguire for his mistake leading up to Burnley's goal as he said: 'Harry Maguire makes the players around him better. For example he made Weghorst looks like Messi.'

United fans were not the only people to hit out at Maguire, as Rio Ferdinand branded Maguire's performance as 'poor' and said he was 'lucky not to be sent off'.

Ferdinand said on BT Sport: 'The goal was poor on Harry’s part. He will take responsibility for that. He needs to iron it out. Even the challenge he made over the halfway line. He’s lucky to have stayed on the pitch.

'It’s a performance he won’t be happy with. I don’t know if it’s a hangover from the Euros, physically and mentally.

'There hasn’t been the consistency from a player of his stature this season. We can level it at Harry Maguire but this whole team has to take responsibility.'

Describing Burnley's equaliser, Ferdinand continued: 'There’s McTominay, he’s your protection, all he’s got to do, Maguire, is keep pushing him away, he hasn’t got to overcommit, as soon as he over commits, it’s a great piece of skill, this pass is sublime, if Kevin De Bruyne does that [Weghorst pass] we’ll all be going crazy.

'This touch across Maguire [from Rodriguez] takes him completely out of it. I don’t think Maguire is quick enough to have got there to affect that situation once it got beyond him.

'It’s about stopping it at the source, once he has the big No 9, keep him facing [away from] the goal, he’s got the security of McTominay in front of him, he can deal with him a little bit, these are small mistakes leading to big moments.'

Ferdinand's fellow pundit and former Everton goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis voiced her concerns on how Maguire's performances could have a negative affect on team-mates around him as well as questioning his leadership.

'He’s got to have a calm head and not make rash decisions. But we saw him run back and you could see how he was almost treading water. How slow he looked,' she added.

'I just think he was switched off on too many occasions. As a goalkeeper I want someone who is calm and making assured decisions. He’s played as the England captain and as the United captain and I expect that from a leader. He hasn’t been a leader at the moment.'

Maguire after a brilliant Euro 2020 campaign with England has suffered a miserable season with the Red Devils.

His performance against Burnley was the latest match where he has made costly errors which have cost United this season and fans have been calling for him to be dropped as captaincy and from the starting 11.

In dropping points to Burnley, United dropped out of the Champions League places with West Ham moving up to fourth after their 1-0 victory over Watford.

Michael Owen savages 'embarrassing, petrified' Harry Maguire over his performance against Southampton, adding 'I fear for him, he's got no pace, he was outwitted'

* Man United captain Harry Maguire has come under criticism for his performance
* Former Red Devils forward Michael Owen insists 'lack of pace is the real problem'
* The England international was caught in no mans land for Che Adams equaliser

Former Manchester United star Michael Owen has delivered a withering verdict on Harry Maguire's lack of pace after the club captain was tormented by Southampton striker Armando Broja during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Maguire has struggled badly since returning from his exploits at Euro 2020, where he helped England reach their first final of a major tournament since 1966.

The 28-year-old, who joined The Red Devils for £80million back in 2019, has come under intense pressure all season for his performances.

The Saints were bright at Old Trafford, with on-loan Chelsea striker Broja continuing to make a serious impression.

Michael Owen fears Manchester United captain Harry Maguire's lack of pace is a problem. The England international was given a torrid time by Southampton loanee Armando Broja. Michael Owen believes Maguire was petrified of space in behind him for the Saints goal

He gave Maguire a torrid time as Southampton fought back from Jadon Sancho's early goal to take a point against Ralf Rangnick's men.

It was, however, Broja's strike partner Che Adams who caught Maguire in no man's land for his equaliser.

‘I did fear for him and that was quite embarrassing,’ former United striker Owen said of the incident, speaking to Premier League Productions.

‘He’s got no pace at the best of times but he was outwitted there (by Broja). Then you’re thinking don’t try to redeem your mistake, he just got away with it and I don’t think it was a penalty.

‘But you are fearful when he’s running towards him man you think are you going to try to do something stupid but he just gets away with it.

‘His lack of pace is a real problem. We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again. The goal, he could have been squeezing up but he’s petrified of that space in behind.’

The centre-back also faced fierce criticism for his defending against Burnley in midweek, when he allowed Wout Weghorst to turn away and set Jay Rodriguez up for the equaliser.

Maguire will need to improve his current form if he is to help lead his United to a top-four finish this season.

'He's our captain and I don't see any reason to change that': Ralf Rangnick BACKS Harry Maguire to hit form amid increasing fan criticism as Man United interim boss claims playing in a back four is 'new' for the £80m man

* Ralf Rangnick says he will not relent to fan pressure and drop Harry Maguire
* Maguire's position in the Man United team has been called into question of late
* He was at fault for Burnley's goal and failed to impress against Southampton
* United interim boss Rangnick says he will not drop his £80million captain
* The German claimed that playing in a back four is 'something new' for Maguire

Ralf Rangnick has thrown his support behind Harry Maguire amid the Manchester United star's poor run of form, insisting he will not relent to fan pressure and drop the £80million man.

Maguire, 28, has faced scrutiny for several below-par performances of late, with a section of United supporters claiming that the defender should be dropped, with the captaincy withdrawn.

The England international was handed the captain's armband by former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020, just five months after his mega-money move from Leicester, yet his displays against Southampton and Burnley have convinced some fans that he is better served by being taken out of the firing line.

Yet interim boss Rangnick sees no need to replace Maguire in his starting XI, and insisted that he will stand by his captain ahead of tonight's clash with Brighton.

'I think when he came back after his injury he did extremely well. He had a very good performance, a very good game against West Ham,' Rangnick said.

'In the past two games, yeah he had some weaker moments, against Southampton and when we conceded the goal at Burnley, but he's our captain and I don't see any reason to change that.'

Maguire was utilised in a back three and back four under Solskjaer, and Rangnick claims the defender - who has made 132 appearances for the Red Devils -still needs time to get used to playing in a flat back four.

Ralf Rangnick has thrown his support behind Harry Maguire amid his slump in performances. Maguire's position in the team has been called into question after recent shaky displays. United interim boss Rangnick says that Maguire is his captain and he will stand by him. The German suggested that the £80million man needs time to get used to a back four system

'He's a player who has to develop, get better, like all the other players,' he added.

'The way that we are playing now is new also to him because in the English national team he was used to playing in a back three and here at Manchester United, in most cases a back four, but still not being as proactive, not with that kind of rest defence always being on the front foot when we are trying to defend.

'This is something also new to him and it will also take some time for him to get used to that, to get adjusted to that.'

Rangnick will be counting on Maguire to help get United out of their recent slump, having dropped points to Southampton and Burnley in the past week, missing the opportunity to build a lead over their rivals in the race for fourth place.

United are bidding to fend off West Ham, Arsenal, Tottenham and Wolves in the battle for Champions League football next season, and Rangnick admitted that finishing fourth is the club's No 1 priority this term.

'Right now this is exactly what Manchester United needs to want, to finish fourth in the league,' the German said.

'This is the highest possible achievement we can get with no other things: yes to proceed into the next round in the Champions League but that is also not an easy one. In the league it is No 4 that is our ambition and what we have to achieve.

'If you look at the current table and the gap between not only us but also other teams like Tottenham and Arsenal and the top two or three teams, there are probably some reasons why they are that far ahead.

'From the last 10 weeks I can tell you the players are ambitious, they work hard and they want to get better.

'They don't feel happy after a game like Burnley, Middlesbrough or Southampton. My job is to help show them a pathway to win games.'

Maguire said that he posted the picture as payback for the stick his friend had been giving him prior to the game.

Maguire explained on Twitter: 'For everyone asking, it's my good mate, a big Leeds fan. He was at the ground but not in the pic. He's been giving us some stick all week so thought I'd add him in.'

Maguire used the post to not only rub in the fact he had scored against his mate's team but the fact United had won 4-2.

United secured their victory thanks to goals from Maguire, Bruno Fernandes, Fred and Anthony Elanga.

Leeds did, however, make it onto the scoresheet thanks to strikes from Rodrigo and Raphinha.

Harry Maguire's future at Manchester United will be under the microscope this summer as they chase world-class centre-back... following claims his team-mates are questioning his place in the side

* The Red Devils are looking to sign a world-class centre-back in the summer
* Plus, some players feel he has been fortunate to keep his place in the side
* Antonio Rudiger could be an option if he doesn’t agree a new terms at Chelsea
* While Barcelona’s young Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is also an option

Harry Maguire's future at Manchester United will come under even greater scrutiny in the summer with the club planning to sign a world-class centre-back.

More doubts emerged over Maguire’s form and captaincy on Thursday amid claims that his United teammates are questioning why he continues to be picked by interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Maguire was rested for last weekend’s goalless draw with Watford - when Raphael Varane played alongside Victor Lindelof in central defence - and it remains to be seen if he is reinstated for Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.

Rangnick has been publicly supportive of Maguire, but it’s understood that a new centre-back will be high on United’s list of targets in the summer.

Antonio Rudiger could be an option if the Germany international doesn’t agree a new contract at Chelsea, while Barcelona’s young Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is among the other names being linked with a move to Old Trafford.

United’s plans to strengthen in central defence - Eric Bailly and Phil Jones also face uncertain futures at the club - are bound to cast further doubt over Maguire’s situation.

Antonio Rudiger could be an option for United if he doesn’t agree a new terms at Chelsea

It is complicated by the fact that he is United’s captain and the most expensive centre-back in world football following a £80million move from Leicester in 2019.

But the England international’s form has dipped alarmingly this season and even Rangnick admitted recently that Maguire has suffered some ‘weaker moments’.

Reports on how Thursday claimed that United players are privately questioning Maguire’s place in the team and believe that his performances are not up to standard.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s young Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo is also named as an option

Sportsmail understands that Maguire has upset a number of teammates this season by openly blaming them on the pitch for making mistakes when his own form has been so erratic, and by some of his critical post-match comments to the media.

United and Maguire have dismissed speculation over a power struggle between the former Hull player and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Rangnick insisting that his captain will keep the armband until the end of the season.

But the situation beyond then is less clear as United prepare to replace Rangnick with a permanent manager and embark on a busy summer in the transfer market.

'Every mistake you make, it gets punished and highlighted': Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United captain Harry Maguire needs a 'little bit of luck' to return to top form... as the defender faces mounting criticism

* Rio Ferdinand says Harry Maguire needs luck on his side to improve his fortunes
* The £80million defender has faced constant criticism this season for his displays
* Manchester United currently sit fifth in the Premier League after 29 games

Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United captain Harry Maguire needs some luck to turn his recent woes around, as he continues to face intense criticism.

The 29-year-old defender was appointed captain at Old Trafford back in January 2020, just five months after becoming the world's most expensive defender by signing for £80million from Leicester.

Maguire has been lambasted this season for his below-par performances and costly mistakes during a tough campaign for the Red Devils.

In October, it was reported that during a team meeting after their 4-2 defeat by Leicester, some players ripped into each other, with one even questioning Maguire's selection as captain.

After poor displays in matches against Burnley and Southampton last month, it was also claimed that team-mates have privately questioned Ralf Rangnick's decision to keep playing Maguire.

But former Red Devils centre back Ferdinand has backed the England international to return to his best provided he can ride the storm and get luck back on his side.

'What's killing him is it seems week after week something is questioning something about Harry Maguire and it's quite glaring,' Ferdinand said on his podcast Vibe with Five.

'We've all been moments like this – in my career it happened. A lot of the time it's luck.

'He's going through a period where everything you do there seems to be a problem, there's a mistake.

On his podcast, Ferdinand has insisted all players go through poor moments in their careers/ Ferdinand has also likened Maguire's rough patch this season to struggles in his own career

'Every mistake you make, it gets punished and highlighted. Sometimes – I went through moments in my career when I made mistakes but they didn't score, or the keeper pulled me out of it - or Vidic made a tackle.

'And that's what happens in teams. It's about rising that little bit of luck you need – and Harry Maguire needs that little bit of luck to get out of this little dip in form he is having right now.'

Maguire has made 24 appearances in the Premier League this campaign and scored one goal.

seorang kapten tidak selayaknya performanya kayak gini, untuk laga penting vs Atletico mending dicadangkan dulu deh, duetin Varane-Lindelof dulu

Default Re: Harry Maguire

'Harry Maguire is not at the level to be Manchester United captain', blasts his former Hull team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady - who says struggling defender is not a 'strong personality', can't handle the pressure, and should still be playing at Leicester!

* Harry Maguire has endured a frustrating season at Manchester United
* He has repeatedly come under question for his below-par performances
* His role as captain at Old Trafford has come under question during the campaign
* Ex-Hull team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady believes he can't 'handle the pressure'

Harry Maguire is 'not at the level' to be Manchester United captain, according to former team-mate Ahmed Elmohamady.

The 29-year-old defender was appointed captain at Old Trafford back in January 2020, just five months after becoming the world's most expensive defender by signing for £80million from Leicester.

Maguire has faced near constant criticism this season for his below-par performances and costly mistakes, during a tough campaign for the Red Devils.

Speaking to beIN Sports, former Hull City team-mate Elmohamady has claimed that Maguire 'can't handle' the pressure of the armband.

Harry Maguire has faced near constant criticism for his below-par performances this season

He said: 'Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn't have the level to be the Manchester United captain.

'Man United need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays.

'Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure; however, Maguire can't handle this pressure.

'So I think that the pressure he has by wearing the captain's armband is affecting his performances.

'Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League and maybe this is his level.

'He doesn't have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England.'

Ahmed Elmohamady has suggested his former team-mate 'can't handle the pressure'. Maguire (right) and Elmohamady (left) were team-mates at Hull City from 2014 to 2017

Elmohamady and Maguire were team-mates for three seasons at Hull from 2014 to 2017.

Both players left that summer following Hull's relegation to the Championship, with Maguire joining Leicester and Elmohamady moving to Aston Villa.

Maguire is now in his third season at Manchester United, while the Egyptian full-back has been a free agent since leaving Villa at the end of last season.

Elmohamady is not the first person to bring up the debate of whether Maguire is suitable to wear the captain's armband at Old Trafford.

Maguire's role as captain and place in the team has come under question by team-mates. Elmohamady suggested that Maguire should still be playing at Leicester, who he left in 2019

In October, it was reported that during a team meeting after their 4-2 defeat by Leicester, some players ripped into each other, with one questioning Maguire's selection as captain.

After poor displays in matches against Burnley and Southampton last month, it was reported that team-mates have privately questioned Ralf Rangnick's decision to keep playing Maguire.

It was said that some believe that the defender's performances are 'not meeting the club's standards'.

Last week, the MEN reported that Eric Bailly is dismayed that the out-of-form Maguire keeps starting ahead of him.
