Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

Manchester United will be without Anthony Martial AND Edinson Cavani for crunch Champions League showdown at RB Leipzig, with both suffering from minor knocks

* Manchester United's Champions League progression comes down to one game
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side travel to face RB Leipzig in Champions League
* They must at least secure a draw to guarantee reaching knockout stages
* Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani are both out of game with minor injuries

Manchester United will be without Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani for their do-or-die Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

Both attacking players are nursing minor injuries and will not travel to Germany for the final group game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: 'David de Gea is travelling, Luke Shaw is travelling, Edinson and Anthony won't be making the trip, minor niggles.'

United need at least a draw to guarantee their place in the knockout stages of the competition.

So the absence of two of their striking options is a blow, although Martial has been struggling for form so far this season.

Cavani's absence may be a more significant blow as he has shown signs of his best recently, particularly in the brace he scored against Southampton.

Despite the fact that a point would be good enough against Julian Nagelsmann's team, Solskjaer insisted that United will not be sitting back with a cautious approach.

He said: 'I think you approach the game as a 90 minute game, anything can happen in any moment, you can't sit back and hope for a 0-0 draw, its not in our genes, the club's genes. You have to play to win.

'Games like this are something that we want. Tradition for Manchester United is to make it hard for ourselves! Even ever since I played and that's a long time ago.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to rejig his forward line for the RB Leipzig showdown. Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial are out of the game with minor niggles

Harry Maguire added: 'We go there and look to win, for sure we won't be sitting back.'

There is a lot of pressure on United heading into Tuesday's match, but Solskjaer is confident the players will rise to the occasion.

'Knockout games or games like this that mean you can go through or not are big,' the United boss said.

'The players are here, they are Man United players, because they have qualities that we've looked for and I'm sure that tomorrow night will prove that's the reason why they're here, they will show it.

'I think the character of the group is getting better and better and we're looking forward to the game.

lini serang jadi sedikit tumpul nih, kalo Martial yg cedera gpp, ini ditambah Cavani pula. mudah2an Rashford/Greenwood/Bruno bisa unjuk gigi, minimal seri lah, yg penting lolos biar #OleOut tidak bergema lagi

Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

Julian Nagelsmann warns his RB Leipzig players they must 'fight until the very end' to beat Manchester United in crucial Champions League tie as he dismisses importance of 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford

* RB Leipzig play Manchester United for a place in the Champions League last 16
* The Bundesliga side will advance if they win while United only need a draw
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side beat the Germans 5-0 at Old Trafford in October
* Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann is confident his team can produce a better result

RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann is ready for a fight to the finish with Manchester United in Tuesday’s Champions League group decider in Germany.

The Bundesliga side will advance to the knockout stage if they win, while United could drop into the Europa League depending on Paris Saint-Germain’s result against Istanbul Basaksehir.

Nagelsmann dismissed the importance of Leipzig’s 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford in October, and is more concerned about United’s ability to fight back after seeing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side come from behind to win all five away games in the Premier League this season.

Julian Nagelsmann believes his RB Leipzig side can progress to the Champions League last 16. The Bundesliga team must beat Manchester United, who only need a draw to go through

‘We are aware that if Manchester United are trailing they can still turn the match around,’ said Nagelsmann. ‘They have shown that in the last matches. We have to wait for the referee to end the match. We have to fight until the very end to get the three points against them.

‘I don’t know for which team it is easier – the team defeated 5-0 or that won 5-0. The result doesn’t such play such a big role. I think they will treat it as a fresh game.

‘We analysed the match and showed my players how good they were in certain situations. We were better in the game but a little bit too afraid at the start. We can add a lot and improve, especially in the last third

The Germans were beaten 5-0 at Old Trafford in October but Nagelsmann dismissed the importance of that result. Nagelsmann said Leipzig are aware of United's ability to turn games around after going behind

‘United defended well. We can’t say they played well, but they defended very well.

‘It’s complicated for United as well. Most of the group phase they were in first place, and now if they lose they might not go to the knockout stage.’

Nagelsmann revealed that Lazar Samardzic has tested positive for Covid-19 and will miss the game along with Konrad Laimer (knee), Lukas Klostermann, Benjamin Henrichs (both knee) and Dayot Upamecano (suspension).

Antonio Mateu Lahoz will be in charge of Tuesday’s game and Nagelsmann has promised to be on his best behaviour after clashing with the Spanish referee when Leipzig lost to Lyon in the Champions League 14 months ago.

‘You have to deal with him,’ added the Leipzig coach. ‘You know he likes to give cards to coaches.

‘They know I like to give my opinion from the sidelines, a little bit louder perhaps. I hope to stay in the coaching zone for the whole 90 minutes and not have to leave.

‘He has a lot of experience of big games In Spain and the Champions League. As a coach, it’s out of your hands. You have to accept the things from the referee.’

Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

Defiant Harry Maguire says Manchester United haven't even THOUGHT about playing in the Europa League and they fully 'expect' to go through ahead of do-or-die Champions League trip to RB Leipzig

* Harry Maguire says Manchester United haven't thought about Europa League
* United must avoid defeat against RB Leipzig to progress in Champions League
* Maguire is full of confidence that United will be able to make it through

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has insisted that his team haven't even contemplated dropping down to the Europa League.

United face RB Leipzig away on Tuesday, with both sides currently on nine points along with Paris Saint-Germain.

If they avoid defeat United will make it through to the knockout stages and Maguire is adamant that his side will progress.

Maguire said: 'We expect to get through the group, no matter who is in our group. That is the tradition and as a group of players we fully expect to get through. We look forward to the game. All we can do is look after the performance.

Harry Maguire has insisted Manchester United haven't even thought about the Europa League

'You play better teams with better players, that is just a fact. It is a challenge, one we want to be involved in, but we haven't even thought about the Europa League.'

Maguire compared Tuesday's game to the Premier League clash against Leicester in July, when United needed to win in order to reach the Champions League and managed to fulfill that aim.

'First and foremost, I joined this club to play in the biggest games possible,' the world's most expensive defender said.

Maguire compared the game to the clash v Leicester in July, when United needed to win in order to get into the Champions League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side need to avoid defeat against RB Leipzig in order to progress

'Your big players step up in the most pressured games, so for sure I think that's a statement which shows over the years, that the big players step up in the big games.

'It's a bit similar to the game at Leicester last year where we had to get a result to reach the Champions League and we managed to do that, so we'll take confidence from that.

'But we feel ready, we feel prepared and we're looking forward to it.'

United will finish first if they avoid defeat and PSG do not beat Istanbul Basaksehir.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have had a mixed campaign in the Champions League so far.

They secured impressive victories against PSG and Leipzig but then suffered a shock defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir before prevailing in the return fixture. United were then beaten by PSG last week to set up a dramatic conclusion to the group stages.

After coming from behind to beat West Ham 3-1, Solskjaer's team will be confident going into the clash against Leipzig.

United will be without forwards Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial, who are both suffering from minor knocks.

lini depan pincang, lini belakang harus solid jangan sampe kebobolan. harus cetak gol dulu untuk memberikan 'rasa aman', bisa lah seri

Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

'We never make it easy for ourselves!': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer puts Manchester United's hot and cold form down to their 'TRADITION' - before insisting his side will go all out for the win in European showdown with RB Leipzig

* Manchester United's Champions League progression comes down to one game
* Old Trafford club need at least draw to guarantee reaching the knockout stages
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer quipped that it is almost tradition to do things the hard way
* He believes the comeback wins in recent weeks are growing belief in squad

It wasn't supposed to end like this. Manchester United's five-goal win over RB Leipzig at Old Trafford on matchday two in October was meant to open the door to early qualification from Group H.

But the Champions League does not always work that way — and United certainly don't.

Instead, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side kick off at the RB Arena in Germany on Tuesday night still needing a draw to be sure of going through to the knockout phase.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joked that making life difficult is in Manchester United's DNA. The manager senses growing belief in the United squad after recent comeback wins

Defeat would dump them into the Europa League, regardless of Paris Saint-Germain's result against Istanbul Basaksehir.

For a team who have led this group for much of the qualifying campaign, it's far from ideal, but Solskjaer has been here before. 'It's tradition for Man United, we never make it easy for ourselves. Through history it goes down to the last game,' said Solskjaer.

'That's just the way we do things, that's been ever since I played. When we saw this group, we didn't expect to be through before the last game.

'Of course, we could have done it ourselves before now, but we're pleased to have this chance.'

United still deserve credit for seizing the initiative in a group that includes PSG, last season's losing Champions League finalists, and Leipzig, the team they beat in the last four. And Solskjaer backed his players on Monday to stand up and be counted as they look to complete the job.

'Games like this, that mean you can go through if you win, are big,' he added. 'The players here are Man United players because they have qualities we look for. I'm sure they will prove the reason why they are here. They will show it. The character of the group is getting better and better. It's something we want, games like this.'

Mason Greenwood and Co know that a point away at RB Leipzig will be enough for them. Defeat away against Istanbul Basaksehir was followed by another loss against PSG in Europe

United flew to Germany without injured strikers Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani on Monday, as well as the suspended Fred.

While neither Solskjaer nor Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann are putting too much stock by the 5-0 result at Old Trafford, the United manager can still draw reassurance from an impressive away record this season.

Aside from a damaging defeat in Istanbul, his players have won their other eight away games — coming from behind to win five times in the Premier League.

Solskjaer admits there are shades of Sir Alex Ferguson's great teams in the way United keep bouncing back, and believes the Leipzig players will have that in the back of their minds.

'I can definitely see those traits coming back,' he said. 'I don't know how many times we've come back and how many goals we've scored in the last 10 or 15 minutes, but it's a lot. That's a big difference from last season.

'With the fitness we're getting, the spirit we're getting, it's great for us knowing we don't give up. Man United has a tradition and history, and opponents would know about that as well. To get into people's heads, that might happen so they can't switch off.'

Solskjaer also knows it is not in United's DNA to play for a draw, particularly given their erratic form of late. It is a result they have achieved only once in 17 games this season.

'You've got to approach it as a 90-minute game,' he said. 'Anything can happen in any moment. You can't sit back and hope for a 0-0 draw. That's not in our genes, it's not in the team's genes, it's not in the club's genes. We want to go out there and win a game.'

Nagelsmann would expect nothing less after being on the wrong end of a Rashford-inspired United at Old Trafford.

'We are aware that if Manchester United are trailing, they can still turn the match around,' he said. 'They have shown that in the last matches. We have to wait for the referee to end the match, and fight until the very end to get the three points against them.'

However, Nagelsmann believes United's thumping win in the first game and the way the group has gone to the final game could work against Solskjaer and his players.

'I don't know for which team it is easier — the team defeated 5-0 or who won 5-0,' he said.

'It's complicated for United. Most of the group phase they were in first place. Now if they lose they might not go to the knockout stage.'

Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

PLAYER RATINGS: Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba provided late Manchester United inspiration but out-of-sorts Aaron Wan-Bissaka was caught out by RB Leipzig's fast start

* Manchester United dumped out of the Champions League after RB Leipzig loss
* Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given the run-around by Man City loan star Angelino
* Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba on target in late comeback attempt
* Mason Greenwood also showed bright moments in the United attack

It was not to be for Manchester United who, despite launching a spirited comeback in the final 10 minutes, were dumped out of the Champions League in the group stage.

The Red Devils only needed a draw at RB Leipzig to progress to the last-16 but soon found themselves 2-0 down after 13 minutes and were then three goals behind with 21 minutes to play.

Bruno Fernandes and substitute Paul Pogba pulled goals back in the final 10 minutes but it could not prevent them from slipping into the Europa League with a 3-2 loss.

Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan rates the United players' performances on a nightmare evening for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side...

Man United (3-4-1-2)

David De Gea - 5

Absolutely nothing the Spaniard could do as United's back five fell apart in front of his eyes. But then was lacklustre as Leipzig wrapped up the points.

Victor Lindelof – 5

A sense that he could never had a full eye on his own job because of the errors being committed by others close by.

Harry Maguire - 5

Had been winning his individual battles, rarely giving the ball away, before being culpable of indecision with De Gea for Justin Kluivert to score.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 4

All at sea for Leipzig's first two goals and led a merry dance by Manchester City loanee Angelino. Unusually out of sorts defensively.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (front) struggled up against Angelino (back), especially in the first half

Luke Shaw - 5

A centre half who kept gravitating to left back in a bid to cover Alex Telles. Left himself exposed for the second goal.

Scott McTominay – 7

The one man who truly stood up under intense pressure before the break. Drove forward on occasion and showed determination in attempts to push the hosts back.

Nemanja Matic - 5

Julian Nagelsmann's midfield just moved the ball too quickly for Matic, who was left chasing shadows as the Germans took control.

Alex Telles – 4.5

Hooked at half-time after a haphazard display. Telles was sacrificed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer switched to a back four.

Bruno Fernandes – 7

Produced some moments of quality, thumping the bar just before Leipzig's third and scoring the penalty that gave United hope.

Bruno Fernandes hit the crossbar and started United's unlikely comeback bid with a penalty

Mason Greenwood – 7

Might feel he could have netted one of two decent chances before the break. Greenwood was easily United's brightest spark going forward and won the penalty.

Marcus Rashford - 6

The ball never truly dropped for Rashford, whose danger was largely nullified by Leipzig. Would have benefited from more runners around him.

SUBS

Donny van de Beek (for Telles, 46) - 6

Brandon Williams (for Shaw, 61) – 6.5

Paul Pogba (for Matic, 61) – 7

Axel Tuanzebe (for Lindelof, 77)

Timothy Fosu-Mensah (for Wan-Bissaka, 77)

Subs not used: Bailly, Mata, Grant, Lingard, James, Ighalo, Henderson

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 5

A real problem that he could not get a reaction from these players and that the team started so slowly was a poor reflection on his management.

Default Re: [UCL] RB Leipzig vs Manchester United

CHRIS SUTTON: Manchester United were the masters of their own Champions League downfall... criminal defending and poor starts mean their exit wound is self-inflicted

* Manchester United are out of the Champions League after defeat by RB Leipzig
* The club began their group stage campaign well but mistakes started to set in
* Their criminal defending and result at Istanbul Basaksehir have cost them dearly
* United cannot wait until their opponents have a healthy lead before competing

Manchester United were the masters of their own downfall in the Champions League.

They started so well – two wins from two, beating RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain. Then they made mistakes.

There was the criminal defending and result at Istanbul Basaksehir.

There was the manager's reluctance to remove Fred before his red card against PSG.

There was the distracting Paul Pogba saga before this showdown. Pogba was given the final half hour here, and United made it a grandstand finish after going 3-0 down.

But they cannot keep waiting until their opponents hand themselves a healthy lead before they start competing.

In recent weeks we've seen them come back from 1-0 down to West Ham to win 3-1, and 2-0 down to Southampton to win 3-2. It's all good to say they show character in coming back.

Manchester United have been the masters of their own Champions League group stage exit. Their criminal defending and lack of character at the start of games saw them knocked out. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were all at sea in their loss to RB Leipzig and were duly punished

But how about starting with some character? Had they done that against Leipzig here, they might not now be out of the Champions League.

After using a back four in their last ten matches, United started with a back three here. It worked against PSG in October – the last time they used this 3-4-1-2 system.

That time, they were compact, organised and it secured them a significant win. But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were all at sea here.

Solskjaer reverted to a back four in the second half, but there was to be no comeback. United endured yet another bad start to a match and this time, they were punished.

kekalahan mengejutkan vs Istanbul Basaksehir, cukup butuh seri dalam 2 laga malah kalah dua2nya, laga terakhir malah ketinggalan 0-3, sempat bangkit 2-3 namun tidak cukup untuk lolos
