'We didn't know he can shoot!': Bruno Fernandes reveals Manchester United dressing room were left shocked by Aaron Wan Bissaka's stunner against Newcastle as midfielder praises full-back for being 'more positive'

* Bruno Fernandes revealed he was shocked after Aaron Wan Bissaka's goal

Bruno Fernandes revealed he was shocked after Manchester United team-mate Aaron Wan Bissaka's goal against Newcastle as he said: 'we didn't know he can shoot!'.

United won their second match of the Premier League season against Steve Bruce's side despite the worst possible start after an own goal from Luke Shaw in the second minute.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side quickly responded as Harry Maguire headed the visitors level at St James' Park before Wan Bissaka stole the headlines with a stunner.

Bruno Fernandes revealed he was shocked after Aaron Wan Bissaka's goal vs Newcastle

The Newcastle defence finally crumbled late on as Fernandes made amends for a saved penalty earlier in the second half and a goal from the right back and Marcus Rashford topped off a resounding victory.

After the match, Fernandes said that the United players did not know that Wan Bissaka could strike the ball so well.

'[We were so happy] because we didn't know he can shoot!' the midfielder told MUTV. 'So it's difficult for us believing he can score because we never see him shooting.

'We were talking about it now in the dressing room and asking him because we all were thinking he wanted to cross and he makes a bad ball and scores.

'But I'm happy for him, he deserved the goal and we always ask this from him. Be more positive, be more in the box, try and improve because he has such good qualities.

Fernandes said 'we didn't know he could shoot' after the defender scored a rare goal

'Everyone knows about him being a defensive player and everything but he needs to show that he's more than a defensive player and I think he has the qualities to show that.'

Before the international break, United were battered by Tottenham 6-1 at Old Trafford and the Portuguese midfielder insisted that a result like that can not happen again.

'What happened against Tottenham can't happen again. We play for such a big club and such a big team,' he said.

'This club deserves better than that. Everyone needs to be better, starting with me, I need to look at myself first and then at what the group needs to do better.

'Today it was perfect, after that defeat. I think we need to continue improving, don't concede goals, as I said before, and keep scoring.'

Default Re: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Manchester United right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka will 'turn his back on England to play for DR Congo' if Gareth Southgate overlooks him again this month for the World Cup qualifiers

* Manchester United right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka has yet to play for England
* He withdrew from the squad when he received his only call-up in August 2019
* Wan-Bissaka is behind Trent Alexander-Arnold and others in the pecking order
* England's three World Cup qualifiers later this month could decide his future

Aaron Wan-Bissaka will reportedly snub England and opt to represent DR Congo at international level if Gareth Southgate doesn't pick him in his upcoming squads.

Wan-Bissaka has not made a senior appearance for the Three Lions, having been forced to withdraw from the squad when he received his only call-up to date in August 2019.

The Manchester United star, despite his excellence from a defensive point of view, finds himself behind Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Kyle Walker in the pecking order with England having a wealth of options at right back.

And according to The Athletic, should Wan-Bissaka miss out on England selection for the March World Cup qualifying triple-header, there is believed to be an increasing likelihood he will commit his future to DR Congo.

The 23-year-old, who was born in England but is of Congolese descent, has represented both countries at youth level.

Wan-Bissaka played one game for DR Congo's Under 20s in 2015 but then represented England at the same level and has also played for the Under 21s.

Southgate is set to name his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers on March 18, and soon Wan-Bissaka could slip through England's fingers.

England take on San Marino, Albania and then finally Poland in the space of seven days at the end of March.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka hasn't been given the opportunity to make an impact with England. Wan-Bissaka has featured for England at Under 20 and 21 level but not for the senior team. Gareth Southgate will name his Three Lions squad for the upcoming qualifiers on March 18

And with the Euros coming up this summer, which follow two friendlies in June against Austria and Romania, it feels like the last chance saloon for Wan-Bissaka to stake a claim in the England set-up.

While Wan-Bissaka is arguably England's strongest right back from a defensive point of view, it is going forward where the likes of Alexander-Arnold, Trippier and James flourish.

The United right back has enjoyed a strong season to date at club level though, being an ever-present in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backline.

Wan-Bissaka, formerly of Crystal Palace, has featured 36 times in all competitions with United second in the Premier League.

Default Re: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains FIFTH choice right back for England as he returns to Crystal Palace with Manchester United tonight, with his attacking skills often criticised... but he has more goal involvements this season than Trent Alexander-Arnold!

* Aaron Wan-Bissaka returns to former club Crystal Palace on Wednesday
* The right back is having an impressive season for Manchester United
* His defensive stats put him as one of the top performers in the Premier League
* However, he is often criticised for not being as effective going forward
* Wan-Bissaka is often compared to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James
* The Liverpool and Chelsea men have been selected for England ahead of him

This will be the second time Aaron Wan-Bissaka will return to an empty Selhurst Park since his £50million move from Crystal Palace to Manchester United.

His first game back against his former club came in a 2-0 victory for the Red Devils in July and the defender will be hoping for a similar outcome on Wednesday evening.

He will also be desperate to impress. The right back is having a positive second season at Old Trafford but he still finds himself down the pecking order when it comes to international football.

Gareth Southgate has selected Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James over Wan-Bissaka and the 23-year-old is reportedly set to switch his allegiance from England to DR Congo if he is overlooked for the upcoming squads.

Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka faces his former club Crystal Palace on Wednesday. The right back has become a reliable figure for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season

Defensively, the United man is perhaps England's best option at right back. However, his rivals are more threatening going forward and his lack of attacking prowess is something which has frustrated Red Devils fans.

But the defender is a reliable figure for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with only Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes having played more minutes for United this season. He has cemented his position at right back, although there is very little competition.

With the defender 20 months into his United career and preparing for a visit back to where it all began, Sportsmail takes a look at his strengths, weaknesses and impact so far.

DEFENSIVE STRENGTHS

Along with Leeds United right back Luke Ayling, Wan-Bissaka has the made the most tackles in the Premier League with 71.

That's 31 more than Alexander-Arnold, 36 more than James and 47 more than Walker.

He's also made the most interceptions of any of the right backs in the top six with 33, 10 more than James and 12 more than Walker. Alexander-Arnold is close behind on 31.

Wan-Bissaka is joint-top for tackles made in the Premier League with Leeds' Luke Ayling

The 23-year-old also has the most interceptions of any right backs playing for top six teams

Wan-Bissaka is rarely beaten when it comes to 1 v 1 defending and is much stronger in that department than the other options at England's disposal.

However, there is still room for improvement defensively with the youngster prone to giving the ball away too easily.

Rio Ferdinand attributed some blame to Wan-Bissaka for Everton's late equaliser at Old Trafford last month, with the defender giving the ball away in the build-up to the free-kick from which Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored.

'I was fuming before that free-kick,' Ferdinand said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE YouTube channel.

'Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he's got to understand game management at this time of the game.

'Passing the ball inside like that to be cut out is criminal. I would have been going nuts in the changing room, screaming.'

ATTACKING

It's clear Wan-Bissaka is not on the same level going forward as some of the other right backs in the Premier League.

However, Wan-Bissaka has been involved in four goals this season - which actually puts him on a par with Alexander-Arnold.

The United man has two goals and two assists while the Liverpool defender has three assists and one goal. James has one goal and two assists.

In the previous two seasons, Alexander-Arnold has registered 12 and 13 assists and his reduction reflects Liverpool's drop in form in recent months.

It's not just goals and assists which are important but also the attacking threat full backs offer.

Nearly 50 per cent of United's attacks start down the left side, which is probably why Wan-Bissaka has made far fewer passes into the opposition's box (48) than the likes of Alexander-Arnold (281) and James (111).

When it comes to chances created, Wan-Bissaka has 18, Alexander-Arnold 40 and James 25.

The United defender is, however, ahead of Walker when it comes to attacking stats. The Manchester City man is not a guaranteed starter for Pep Guardiola with Joao Cancelo often picked ahead of him in big games.

Former United right back Gary Neville has previously suggested that Wan-Bissaka doesn't need to try and be something he's not but should instead focus on being the best defender he can be.

'The idea that you are going to make Aaron Wan-Bissaka into Trent Alexander-Arnold or Kyle Walker is never going to happen,' the Sky Sports pundit said last year.

Wan-Bissaka has been overlooked for the England team and could switch his allegiance to DR Congo; he is pictured here playing for England Under 21s at the 2019 European Championship

'Manchester United have invested £50million in him, so rather than try and change him they have to work with what he does.

'It's a bit of an old fashioned approach because nowadays full backs are expected to be wingers, score goals, set up goals, take free kicks and penalties. This is a little bit of a throwback. I don't think we have to try and say he needs to be something different.'

Neville also suggested Wan-Bissaka could play in a back three, a formation that England used under Southgate at the 2018 World Cup. The Three Lions boss reverted to four at the back for most of the Nations League games but did return to a back three in the last international break.

Wan-Bissaka has not been tried and tested in a back three but neither had Walker before Southgate played him there in Russia. If he's prepared to bide his time before switching his allegiance, there is a possibility an opportunity could present itself.

NEED FOR COMPETITION

While the defender has nailed down the right-back spot for United, there is little competition. It is fortunate Wan-Bissaka has not picked up an injury this season with Brandon Williams the only real reserve option - and he is more of a left back.

Bringing in another right-sided defender could also help Wan-Bissaka in the long run.

Signing Alex Telles has brought the best out of Luke Shaw, who is arguably having his best season at Old Trafford.

The defender has cemented his spot as United's No 1 right back but has little competition

Shaw has kept Telles, who joined for £15.4m in October, out of the team and the defender will have his eye on challenging for a place in the next England squad in March.

Neville suggested the club may look to bring in another full back in the summer and it is more likely to be down the right side, with three options already available on the left.

Signing a right-sided forward could also help Wan-Bissaka. There would be less demand on the defender to get forward if the club have a strong attacker in front of him.

With three years left on his United contract, it is clear the right back will need some form of competition if he is to reach his full potential.

Default Re: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

WHO IS WAN-BISSAKA’S TOUGHEST OPPONENT?

Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has forged a reputation as one of the most defensively savvy full-backs in Europe since joining the club.

The Reds’ no.29 has shown his quality in the Premier League down the years against talented wingers such as Raheem Sterling (who he once named as his most difficult opponent), Sadio Mane and Heung-min Son.

However, on Thursday the defender could face something of a lesser-known quantity among English football fans, with Samu Castillejo or Alexis Saelemaekers likely to line up on the left-hand side for AC Milan in the first leg of our Europa League last-16 meeting.

Speaking to UEFA.com ahead of that clash, Aaron was asked about his defensive discipline and approach in big games. He also revealed that his trickiest assignment yet came earlier this term, during a European game.

“I’d say Neymar,” Wan-Bissaka responded to the toughest-winger question. “That was a player that was quite challenging, but I was always up for it, and I enjoyed it, the experience, to be playing against him. That meant a lot.”

Asked on how he dealt with the challenge of facing Neymar, during our 2-1 group-stage win at the Parc des Princes in October, Aaron said: “I think for him, it’s a bit of both, depending on where he is on the pitch. He’s a player that likes to draw fouls, and so for me, if I’m up against him, it’s [the task is] just not to give him any fouls because that’s what he wants.”

Wan-Bissaka has enjoyed another stellar season in defence for United and no-one in the Premier League has registered more blocks so far this term. Aaron has a remarkable 93 blocks in 2020/21 with the next closest being Leeds United’s Luke Ayling on 60.

The United right-back also sits near the top of the charts when it comes to the highest number of tackles and has earned rave reviews for his defensive displays, with Sterling once again kept quiet at the weekend.

Aaron was asked about his thought process during big games and which qualities he feels are most important at the back.

“Defenders are most likely [to be] targeted on the pitch, to be taken on,” he said. “That comes down to concentration, awareness, and it’s something you have to be prepared for the whole 90 minutes.

“For me, I mainly look at what foot they are. That will be the main information that I’ll need, and it’s just about timing, showing them onto their weaker side and then taking it from there.

“Concentration [is key],” he added. “It’s not always about diving in; it’s to wait for their move rather than me making the first move.”

“For me, [defending] is exciting, especially with the fans, the fans’ reaction. That keeps me going, and it just [makes me want] to make more tackles.”

Our no.29 was also quizzed about how his defensive strategy has changed in recent years to adapt to how the game is now officiated.

“Since VAR became involved, you’ve got to be more careful,” said Aaron. “Depending on whereabouts you’re about to make the tackle, say, around the box, it’s quite crucial there, so that’s where the concentration comes in a lot.”

Paul Scholes claims Aaron Wan-Bissaka 'doesn't look right throwing a ball' after full-back's role in Roma's first-half equaliser in dramatic Europa League semi-final at Old Trafford

* Paul Scholes claimed Aaron Wan-Bissaka doesn't look right throwing a ball
* The right back's throw-in led to Roma's equaliser against Manchester United
* Scholes and Owen Hargreaves both slammed the award of a penalty to Roma
* Paul Pogba was deemed to have handled the ball as he slid in to block a cross

Paul Scholes questioned Aaron Wan-Bissaka's ability on throw-ins after his role in Roma's first goal against Manchester United.

After Bruno Fernandes had given the hosts the lead, Lorenzo Pellegrini equalised from the penalty spot, with the award of the penalty initially coming from a poor Wan-Bissaka throw.

It led the former Manchester United legend to criticise the right back and believes it showed a flaw in Wan-Bissaka'a game.

'First of all, it’s a terrible throw from Wan-Bissaka,' Scholes told BT Sport.

'Sometime some fullbacks just don’t look right throwing a ball, and he doesn’t. It’s a terrible throw, Roma are right onto that, counter-attacking team.'

However, Scholes slammed the award of penalty, which was given after Paul Pogba was deemed to have handled the ball as he slid in to block a cross.

'What is he (Pogba) supposed to do? He’s sliding to block the ball, the only thing he’s tried to do is get his arm out the way, and it hits him,' Scholes said.

Paul Scholes criticised Aaron Wan-Bissaka for Roma's equaliser against Manchester United. The former United midfielder claimed the right back doesn't look right throwing a ball

'There’s absolutely nothing he can do about that.'

Scholes' fellow pundit Owen Hargreaves was in full agreement and voiced his opposition to the current rules surrounding handball.

'The referee didn’t give it. I hate this rule, it’s the worst rule ever,' Hargreaves said.

'I don’t think it’s a penalty but obviously the officials who make the rule obviously do. Terrific penalty from Pellegrini, give him credit, fabulous penalty into the corner.'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'is planning to try Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a CENTRE BACK in pre-season', with Man United keen to sign Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier

* Wan-Bissaka is an out-and-out right back and has never played centrally before
* But the 23-year-old star is an excellent defensive player and a superb tackler
* Solskjaer is keen to try him at centre half in pre-season to see if he can play there
* The Red Devils have been linked with Atletico Madrid full back Kieran Trippier
* The club are reportedly still looking for a long-term partner for Harry Maguire

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will reportedly try Aaron Wan-Bissaka at centre back in pre-season in an attempt to solve Manchester United's defensive question marks, amid interest in right back Kieran Trippier.

Wan-Bissaka, traditionally an out-and-out right back, has never played centrally before but is an excellent defensive player and a fine tackler.

And according to the Sun, United boss Solskjaer is keen to try him in the middle of the defence to see if it would be a viable long-term option.

The 23-year-old could be tried next to another centre back - probably captain Harry Maguire - in a back four, or might be used on the right side of a three, as Reece James and Kyle Walker do at Chelsea and Manchester City respectively.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly keen to try Aaron Wan-Bissaka (shown left) at centre back. Wan-Bissaka has never played centrally but is an excellent defensive player and a fine tackler. Solskjaer is understood to want to try Wan-Bissaka in the middle of defence during pre-season. He could line up alongside club captain Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence next season

If Wan-Bissaka proves a success there, it would make the Red Devils defence more adaptable and flexible, and able to swap between different systems during matches.

United are thought to be interested in signing Atletico Madrid full back Trippier to provide cover and competition for Wan-Bissaka, who has played 100 matches in the last two seasons.

The former Tottenham star can play as a full-back or wing-back on both sides and would provide another versatile option, with current back-ups Diogo Dalot and Brandon Williams not considered viable first-team regulars.

Wan-Bissaka, who signed from Crystal Palace for £50million in 2019, has impressed at Old Trafford and is widely seen as one of the best defensive right-backs in the Premier League, but missed out on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 England squad.

Southgate picked James, Walker, Trippier and Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold ahead of him, although Alexander-Arnold has since withdrawn from the tournament with an injury.

According to Reds icon John Barnes, three-cap England U21 international Wan-Bissaka, who could pledge his allegiance to the Democratic Republic of Congo, should have made the squad.

He said: 'Look at Aaron Wan-Bissaka – he is our best right back by far in this country. But because he is not as good on the ball as the others, he got unfairly overlooked.

'Everyone is clamouring for attacking right backs, but does not pay enough respect to out-and-out defenders. It doesn't matter if Southgate plays four or five at the back, if you don't have players who can defend properly, it is immaterial.'

Paul Scholes slams Aaron Wan-Bissaka as 'USELESS on the ball' in scathing assessment of defender's attacking abilities after terrible display in Man United's derby defeat to City

* Aaron Wan-Bissaka was one of several Man United players who performed badly during Saturday's 2-0 derby defeat to Man City
* Club legend Paul Scholes said Wan-Bissaka is ill-suited to wing-back position
* Scholes criticised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for lacking conviction with his system

Paul Scholes has described Aaron Wan-Bissaka as 'useless on the ball' in a scathing assessment of the Manchester United right-back.

Wan-Bissaka was one of several United players who performed well below the expected standard in Saturday's 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set his team up in a 3-5-2 formation but Wan-Bissaka didn't excel in the wing-back role as City dominated from start to finish at Old Trafford.

Joao Cancelo, who's set up both of City's goals, gave Wan-Bissaka a torrid time and United club legend Scholes certainly wasn't impressed.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka struggled to make much impact going forward against Manchester City. Wan-Bissaka was occupied mainly with defensive duties as Joao Cancelo ran him ragged

'I said before the 3-5-2 doesn't suit the players in the team,' he told Premier League Productions.

'Wan-Bissaka is useless on the ball - brilliant defender but useless on the ball at right-back.

'Three centre-halves today, none of them that good on the ball. Ole has got to find a way… There's a squad of players there that could be okay.'

Wan-Bissaka, who cost United £50million when signed from Crystal Palace in June 2019, has played in all but two of their games this season but hasn't contributed a goal or an assist.

Paul Scholes described Wan-Bissaka as 'useless' when in possession as United struggled. The United right-back is beaten by Ilkay Gundogan during a sorry performance on Saturday. Scholes also demanded more 'conviction' from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in setting up the team

He scored twice and set up six more goals last season.

Scholes also took aim at Solskjaer and the club's direction under his charge.

'The conviction has to come from the coach of the way you're going to play football,' he said. 'Ole has been here three years now and we've come here today not really knowing what he's going to do.

'That makes the recruitment almost impossible because you're not buying players for a system.

'Three years down the line you can see the evidence on the pitch - today and two weeks ago we are a long way off.

'I do think we've got a group of good players but Ole has to convince everyone that he is the right man to find the right formation for this team.

'Stop messing about changing it for everyone else. He's got to now have a conviction, whatever it is I don't care, just have that conviction.'

The derby defeat left United fifth in the Premier League table and they are already nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea as hopes of a title challenge fade.
