What's the latest team news? Henrikh Mkhitaryan (hamstring) and Michael Carrick (calf) both picked up injuries during Wednesday’s Europa League win and are now doubts for Sunday’s game. Wayne Rooney has also been struggling with a muscle injury but Ander Herrera is set to return from suspension. For United’s opponents, Sofiane Boufal is battling to recover from an ankle injury in time for kick-off, while captain Virgil van Dijk (ankle) and Charlie Austin (shoulder) are longer-term absentees.

How did both sides reach Wembley? Mourinho’s men began the EFL Cup run with a 3-1 victory away to League One side Northampton Town back in September, before a Juan Mata strike earned United a 1-0 victory in a tight Manchester derby to knock out cup holders City at Old Trafford. Braces from Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial helped the Reds ease through a quarter-final tie against West Ham United with a 4-1 triumph. In the semi-finals, the Reds saw off a resilient Hull City 3-2 on aggregate. United won the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, but the Tigers edged the return 2-1 to end United’s 17-match unbeaten run; it's our only defeat in the last 25 matches in all competitions.

Southampton, meanwhile, encountered Premier League opposition in all four previous rounds of this year’s EFL Cup. Puel’s outfit overcame Crystal Palace 2-0 in the third round, before a 1-0 victory over Sunderland set up a tough quarter-final clash away at Arsenal. Goals from Jordy Clasie and Ryan Bertrand secured a famous 2-0 win for the Saints, who reached their first League Cup semi-final since 1987. In the last four, they recorded a 1-0 first-leg win over Liverpool, before a late Shane Long goal at Anfield doubled the Saints' aggregate advantage and ensured they reached Wembley without conceding a single goal.

What's our League Cup history? United are targeting a fifth League Cup triumph and a first since 2010. The Reds came from behind to beat Aston Villa 2-1 that day, with record goalscorer Wayne Rooney heading the winner 16 minutes from time after Michael Owen cancelled out James Milner’s opener. The result meant United became the first team to successfully defend the League Cup trophy since 1990, after also winning the competition in 2009 in a penalty shoot-out against Tottenham Hotspur. The 2005 League Cup was Mourinho’s first trophy in English football; the manager went on to win it twice more in 2007 and 2015 with Chelsea, maintaining his impressive 100 per cent win record in domestic cup finals in England.

Southampton, on the other hand, are yet to win the competition and their only previous final appearance came in 1979, when they lost 3-2 to Nottingham Forest. The Saints last featured in a domestic final in 2003, losing 1-0 to Arsenal in the FA Cup. Puel will also be hoping he can win his first silverware since coming to England, after the Frenchman took charge at St Mary’s last summer.

How have we fared against the Saints recently?
Ibrahimovic scored twice on his Old Trafford debut as United beat Southampton 2-0 when the sides met at the beginning of the season. In the 2015/16 campaign, both sides recorded away wins as Martial’s brace secured a 3-2 success for United at St Mary’s, while a late header from Austin was enough to give the Saints all three points in Manchester.

What have our players been saying? In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, full-back Antonio Valencia gave his thoughts on the final, saying: "In such an important game, you really need to be mentally strong and fully focused on the game, even more so when it’s at a fantastic stadium like Wembley, with all its history. Let’s hope that’s how it is in this final and we’re all concentrating on our jobs and we can manage to win the cup."

Who's the referee this weekend? Andre Marriner takes charge of Sunday’s showdown. The 46-year-old has presided over 26 fixtures this season, showing six red cards and 102 yellows in that time. The last United game he oversaw was the 4-0 FA Cup victory over Reading last month. Marriner will be assisted by Richard West and Stuart Burt, with Kevin Friend acting as fourth official.

UNITED'S TEAM NEWS FOR EFL CUP FINAL



Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has ruled Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of the EFL Cup final with Southampton but expects Michael Carrick to be available.

Both players were injured in the Europa League tie at Saint-Etienne on Wednesday with goalscorer Mkhitaryan feeling his hamstring and Carrick being withdrawn in the second half due to a calf problem.

Wayne Rooney has stepped up his comeback in training and will be involved as the Reds take on the Saints at Wembley this Sunday. The skipper scored the winner the last time the club lifted the trophy, against Aston Villa in 2010.

A decision will be taken on the fitness of centre-back Phil Jones on Saturday as he is also closing on a return.

"Michael [Carrick] is available," said the boss. "Clever, experienced. He left the pitch [against Saint-Etienne] in the right moment so Michael is available. Mkhitaryan is out and Jones, let's see and decide tomorrow.

"Wayne's fine, he's training with the team. He was not selected for Saint-Etienne because he was not ready to play but he was ready to have one more important training session and no doubts, no doubts, he is involved in the game."

Ander Herrera is back in the fold after being suspended for the midweek win at Saint-Etienne while Eric Bailly's ban only covers the Europa League, so he will miss the trip to Russia to face FC Rostov, following his red card in France.

Saya ingat saat itu Owen mengalami cedera setelah mencetak salah satu gol. Namun momen yang tidak terlupakan saat itu adalah ketika Owen yang berjalan pincang saat pemberian medali kemudian mengangkat trofi piala liga dengan wajah sumringah dan gembira karena saat itu dirinya lama tidak meraih gelar juara. Semoga momen kegembiraan Owen tersebut nanti bisa dirasakan juga oleh Bastian, Pogba, Ibra dan pemain United lainnya yang belum pernah merasakan gelar piala liga

ANTONIO VALENCIA MAKES WEMBLEY PROMISE



Manchester United defender Antonio Valencia is raring to go ahead of this weekend's EFL Cup final against Southampton, and says the Reds will do everything possible to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford.

Valencia has been a standout performer for the Reds this term and is expected to start Sunday's match, when he will be targeting a seventh trophy since joining the club from Wigan in 2009.

In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, the Ecuadorian says he's already looking forward to walking out onto the pitch and believes the players' attitude will play a big part.

“I'm 100 per cent up for it!" enthused Valencia. "You can never be just at 30 per cent. When you pull on the United shirt you have to be 100 per cent focused and ready. It’s all about being totally concentrated.

"In such an important game as a final, you really need to be mentally strong and fully focused on the game, even more so when it’s at a fantastic stadium like Wembley, with all its history. Let’s hope that’s how it is in this final and we’re all concentrating on our jobs and we can manage to win the cup.

“We have to put all the build-up, photos and interviews completely out of our minds, and focus on the task in hand. We’ve got a trophy up for grabs here and know just how important that is for the supporters. We can’t approach the game in a relaxed mood; we have to go out, put in a shift and fight hard, and hope that throughout the 90 minutes, we're in control of the game and can eventually lift the cup."

It was Valencia who provided the assist for Zlatan Ibrahimovic's winner when United claimed the Community Shield in August, and while the full-back has great memories of the occasion, he's trying not to think about previous trips to Wembley.

“We have to forget about the fact that we might have won there three, four or five times," he added. "We have to put that to one side. This is another final, and a totally different story. We cannot afford to make one single mistake, this is a final and we cannot lose our concentration for even one minute.

“It’s a stadium which really is just made for playing football and enjoying it at the same time. Let’s hope then that we won’t be disappointed, and that we can play with a smile on our faces and with total commitment.

“Winning the cup could give us even more impetus, as we’re already pretty high on confidence. It’s a big thing for us, there are around 15 games left in the Premier League and anything can still happen. While we have a chance mathematically, we’ll carry on battling to try and win the title."
