UNDER-21 CHAMPIONS TRAVEL TO SOUTHAMPTON

Warren Joyce's Barclays Under-21 Premier League champions face Southampton away tonight (Monday), live on MUTV with kick-off at 19:00 BST.

The title was retained in true Manchester United fashion with a thrilling 3-2 triumph at Tottenham Hotspur's White Hart Lane last time out and the youngsters will parade their talents on another senior ground as St Mary's is hosting the fixture.

Joyce has confirmed captain James Weir and Joe Rothwell have picked up injuries so the midfield pair look likely to miss out again. United have the most wins and fewest defeats in the division, while also conceding the fewest goals, but need to score three times in the final two games to overtake Spurs' tally of 44.

Southampton are in sixth spot and know a point would take them above Tottenham into fifth place with this being their last match of the campaign.

A trip to Chelsea's Stamford Bridge on 6 May will conclude the Reds' successful league season.

UNDER-21S: SOUTHAMPTON 2 UNITED 1

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 25 April 2016 | St Mary's Stadium | Scorers: Gallagher 46, McNair og 69 | Willock 79

Manchester United's Under-21s may have wrapped up the title last week but Warren Joyce's side slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Southampton in the penultimate game of the season.

Sam Gallagher's strike and an unfortunate own goal by Paddy McNair handed the Saints a two-goal advantage and, although substitute Matty Willock pulled one back on his return from injury, the hosts held out at St Mary's to end their campaign on a high.

The champions soon carved out a real opening as McNair's pass released Scott McTominay but Paulo Gazzaniga saved the angled shot smartly and also clutched Regan Poole's attempt from the rebound. Harrison Reed offered a powerful volley in response when latching onto Sam Johnstone's punch but most of the chances fell to United.

Joe Riley's deflected free-kick forced another good stop out of Gazzaniga, after he was fouled by Armani Little, to ensure the set-piece from a promising position. Argentinian Gazzaniga then produced his best save of the half when pushing Devonte Redmond's spectacular right-foot volley onto a post.

The first-half opportunities dried up after that until Josh Sims forced Johnstone into action again with a routine stop as the whistle approached. It was at least a warning the Saints could mount some threat and, 77 seconds after the restart, Gallagher was left free to steer past Johnstone with his left foot to record his fifth goal in his last five outings.

Riley blazed over the bar before the Saints obtained the upper hand again with Matt Targett firing over from a short free-kick. From the next dangerous set-piece, conceded by Phil Jones, Johnstone could only divert the ball into his own net via the unfortunate McNair.

Jake Hesketh forced a save out of Johnstone but United began to look more of an attacking force with substitutes Josh Harrop and Willock entering the fray. Harrop flashed a good effort off target after injecting some energy into proceedings and Willock gave his side hope when pouncing on a rare mistake by Gazzaniga to poke the loose ball home.

McTominay headed a Demi Mitchell cross over the top and Harrop's deflected shot was fielded by Gazzaniga as Joyce's men attempted to find an equaliser. It looked like McNair had evened things up when his 89th-minute header from Redmond's centre speared goalwards, only for Gazzaniga to pull off an amazing one-handed reflex save.

There was still time for Harrop's volley to force another stunning diving stop out of Gazzaniga and, after Hesketh almost scored in stoppage time at the other end, McTominay was unable to connect with a deflected cross by Mitchell in the dying seconds.

United's league season finishes against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and Joyce will be keen to ensure his troops do not take their foot of the pedal despite already clinching the trophy.

United: Johnstone; Tuanzebe, Williams, Jones (Mitchell 76), Borthwick-Jackson; McNair, Redmond, Poole (Willock 69); Varela (Harrop 69), McTominay, Riley. Subs not used: Henderson, Kehinde.

UNDER-21S END LEAGUE SEASON AT CHELSEA

Manchester United's Under-21 champions conclude the league campaign with an attractive fixture at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge on Friday night (kick-off 19:05 BST, live on MUTV).

Warren Joyce's side clinched the title at Tottenham Hotspur before losing 2-1 to Southampton last time out and the coach will be keen for his charges to end on a high, with a Manchester Senior Cup semi-final tie at Bury also in the diary for next Tuesday.

"We're going to Stamford Bridge, which is a great stadium, and we are playing against a good team so it's an ideal way to end the league season," said Joyce.

The two sides shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford recently but goalscorer James Weir is set to miss out again due to injury. On the plus side, Josh Harrop and Matty Willock both made an impact as substitutes in their comeback from injury at St Mary's with Harrop injecting creativity and energy into the attacking play and Willock pulling a goal back with a tidy finish.

Chelsea have also enjoyed success at younger levels, winning the FA Youth Cup and UEFA Youth League again, but they sit sixth in the table, albeit with games still in hand at this late stage of the campaign.

UNDER-21S: CHELSEA 0 UNITED 1

Barclays Under-21 Premier League | 6 May 2016 | Stamford Bridge | Scorer: Willock 32

Matty Willock's first-half goal proved decisive as Manchester United's Under-21s ended another successful league season in style with a 1-0 victory at Chelsea.

The result means the Reds have beaten every top-flight opponent at least once this term and the Blues rarely threatened Joel Pereira's goal during a tactical masterclass by the visitors.

The first chance during a cagey opening spell came when Tammy Abraham latched onto a Kasey Palmer pass but the prolific striker's shot was comfortably pushed away by skipper Joel Pereira. Warren Joyce's formation was difficult to pin down but Axel Tuanzebe appeared to be in a more advanced position than usual, primarily man-marking Palmer to great effect.

United created an opening in response on 26 minutes when Willock picked up a touch by Adnan Januzaj and embarked on a mazy dribble past four defenders and into the box. Only a sprawling save by Bradley Collins prevented a wonder goal by the fit-again midfielder, who scored on his comeback at Southampton last time out.

Six minutes later, Willock finished off a neat move involving Sadiq El Fitouri and Andreas Pereira as he slid a right-foot shot wide of Collins to hand the champions the lead. Palmer wasted a good position when appearing to showboat with a dreadful volleyed attempt, while Charlie Wakefield's dangerous centre was met with a vital clearance by Regan Poole.

Andreas Pereira thrashed off target following a run by left-sided defender Ro-Shaun Williams as the Reds ended the half on a high and a goal to the good. Joyce changed Januzaj and Devonte Redmond for Demi Mitchell and Josh Harrop at the interval and there was soon a real flashpoint.

Palmer had a tussle with El Fitouri and launched into a wild tackle that kicked his colleague Ola Aina and sparked a melee. Collins was booked after inexplicably rushing from his goal to join the fracas and Harrop was also cautioned but the chief culprit, Palmer, somehow escaped scot free.

United regained some composure with Mitchell providing an ever-present threat with his speed. The substitute was flattened by Dion Conroy as he raced onto an Andreas Pereira through ball but still got his shot away, with Collins saving well. A nice interchange between Tuanzebe and Mitchell was thwarted in a promising position by Jay Dasilva and Harrop then fired a stinging shot straight at Collins as the Reds pressed.

Miro Muheim stabbed a decent chance way over the bar but United defended resolutely with Williams and Phil Jones making a number of robust challenges. Tuanzebe rose to power a headed clearance away before Charlie Colkett sailed an ambitious attempt wide as Chelsea mounted some late pressure without managing to test Joel Pereira.

United: J.Pereira; Poole, Jones, Williams; Love, Tuanzebe, El Fitouri; Willock, A.Pereira (Kehinde 89), Redmond (Harrop 46); Januzaj (Mitchell 46). Subs: Henderson, Olosunde.

Manchester Senior Cup semi-final preview

United's youngsters are targeting the Manchester Senior Cup to add to the Under-21 Premier League trophy, with a semi-final against Bury taking place on Tuesday night.

Warren Joyce's side know victory over the Shakers at Gigg Lane will set up a final against neighbours Manchester City at a time when chief focus will be on the first team's key fixture at West Ham United.

"The cups have been good for us in the past," said Joyce. "The Manchester Senior Cup is great and we’ve played against some good teams. If you look at the history of the cup in years gone by, not just in our time, it was a first-team event in the 1960s and there is a lot of history. The trophy itself is fantastic. It’s really tough playing against other people's first teams and it’s a tough cup to do well in."

There could be changes to the side on duty at Chelsea last Friday, when defender Matthew Olosunde was on the bench for the first time and Under-18s midfielder Tosin Kehinde played the closing stages as a late substitute.

RESERVES : BURY 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 4

Manchester Senior Cup semi-final | 10 May 2016 | Gigg Lane | Scorers: Pereira 15, 41, Poole 40, 52; Dudley 55

United can look forward to facing rivals City in the Manchester Senior Cup final after a comfortable semi-final win over Bury for Warren Joyce's Reserves.

While the first team were in action away to West Ham, Andreas Pereira and Regan Poole both scored twice at Gigg Lane before the Shakers netted a consolation effort, with all the goals coming inside the first hour.

Brazil Under-20 international Pereira struck first after just 15 minutes when he was fouled by Bury midfielder Ryan Crosdale and picked himself up to beat the goalkeeper Andrew Dawber with the free-kick.

Pereira was then the architect and again the executioner in a quick-fire double shortly before half-time, crossing for Poole to power home a header in the 41st minute and popping up to score his second goal in the 42nd after Dawber stopped his initial shot.

The half-time scoreline of 3-0 reflected the Reds' dominance and the advantage was increased even further seven minutes after the break when Paddy McNair, playing in midfield, fed Poole to complete his double after good work on the left by substitute Demi Mitchell.

Joyce may feel his team could have defended better when Anthony Dudley pulled a goal back in the 55th minute but the scoring ended there and the Reds were still great value for the victory.

United: Johnstone; Tuanzebe, Poole, Williams; Varela, Love, Willock, McNair, El Fitouri; Harrop (Mitchell 47); A. Pereira.
Subs not used: J. Pereira, Warren, Kehinde, Buffonge.
