MOURINHO REACTS TO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE EXIT

Jose Mourinho says his Manchester United team must move on quickly after being knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Sevilla on Tuesday night.

After a goalless draw in Andalucia three weeks ago, the Reds suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat in the second leg at Old Trafford as the Spanish side progressed to the quarter-finals.

Read the key points from the boss in his post-match interviews with MUTV and BT Sport…

SECOND SEVILLA GOAL MADE IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE
“I think the first goal will always be important in this match – not just because of the first leg result [a goalless draw] but also because of the profile of the match [a Champions League last-16 tie]. We tried since the first minute to be aggressive and to be intense and I could find some similarities between this game and the beginning against Liverpool last weekend. But then, we didn’t score and Sevilla progressively kept the ball, they were quite confident having the ball and hiding the ball from us and controlling the game well. In spite of that, we didn’t have problems in the first half. In the second half, we had good chances to score. We had good and dangerous approaches to their box. They scored a goal and from that moment everything became much more emotional and much more difficult and the second goal made it almost impossible.”

IT WAS REALLY DIFFICULT
“It would always be a difficult match against a good team. The first goal was important for the mentality especially from the psychological point of view. The team started well but the goal was missing. The first half, we had everything under control. Sevilla were more than happy with 0-0 and that was exactly what they tried for. In the second half, we had chances and dangerous approaches but they scored before us. After that, we were on the edge and it was really difficult. You can concede with more time to play. I said yesterday to the press, I expected this from them, this type of approach. They let the game go until a very dangerous period for us, which they did, and they scored a goal. After that, everything was more difficult as, especially, we had less time.”

NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TEAM’S ATTITUDE
“We always want more quality and movement but the players were completely free for that and we had good situations. I saw one just in front of me in the best period of the first half with Antonio Valencia, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford which is exactly what we work for and this is exactly what we want. We had good situations, we had good periods. I don’t think we had control of the game because the opponent had that, but I cannot say that my players had something wrong in terms of their attitude and their intention to play.”

HAPPY WITH THE PLAYERS’ SADNESS
“Of course, everybody is sad and I told the players in the dressing room I’m happy with this sadness. Really happy with that. There is not time to be sad for a long time, though. We have a match on Saturday and hopefully the players will be back on the training ground and focused on that important game. I said for the two matches against Sevilla and Brighton, if you win you are in and, if you lose, you are out.”

WE MUST MOVE ON QUICKLY
“Yes [we have to look at winning the FA Cup and finishing in the top four]. But a fantastic team like Tottenham has exactly the same target as us to do that. Liverpool have the Champions League but don’t have the FA Cup and that’s football and that’s life. We lost and tomorrow is another day. We have no time for dramas. We have to work because on Saturday we have another important match.”

Graeme Souness slams Manchester United for lacking imagination in Sevilla defeat: 'They resorted to just lumping it to a big centre forward'

* Manchester United were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday
* Substitute Wissam Ben Yedder's two second-half goals sealed victory for Sevilla
* Graeme Souness was critical of Jose Mourinho's approach after full-time

Manchester United lacked imagination and failed to get out of second gear in their Champions League defeat by an 'average' Sevilla, according to Graeme Souness.

Jose Mourinho's side crashed out at the last 16 stage after a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Tuesday night following a second-half brace from Wissam Ben Yedder.

Romelu Lukaku's late consolation was not enough to inspire a late comeback as United were forced to exit the competition prematurely.

'They never played at a tempo which was enough to cause this average Seville team a problem', said Souness on Irish channel TV3.

'They never did until Seville scored basically. They couldn't get out of that second, third gear.

Graeme Souness slammed Manchester United's display in defeat by Sevilla on Tuesday night. Souness accused Manchester United of 'just lumping it to a big centre forward' throughout. Souness was also critical of Mourinho's use of Marouane Fellaini from the start at Old Trafford

'No imagination. (They) resorted to just lumping it to a big centre forward, looking for second bits off him.

'Fellaini's on the pitch - that tells you which way they want to go, thinking they'll get something at a set-piece.

'It's Manchester United we're talking about. It's Manchester United - the biggest club in the world arguably - playing football like that.

'It ain't good enough.'

Souness' words echoed a series of condemnations from former United players Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes on BT Sport.

Romelu Lukaku says Manchester United players went 'hiding' during Champions League exit to Sevilla

* Romelu Lukaku scored a consolation as Manchester United lost 2-1 on Tuesday
* He suggested that United did not deserve to progress to the quarter-finals
* Lukaku also admitted that the dressing room was a quiet place after the game

Romelu Lukaku has accused some of his Manchester United team-mates of 'hiding' during their 2-1 loss against Sevilla.

The Old Trafford club exited the Champions League at the last-16 stage courtesy of two goals from Wissam Ben Yedder. Lukaku scored a consolation late on but it was not enough to rescue his side.

And the Belgian striker believes that United simply did not 'deserve' to progress to the quarter-finals.

He told BT Sport: 'Some things were flawed with some players, some players were hiding. The deception was really big, because you know I think we started the game well, and then we started to let them have control in the game.

'Then we had a few half chances but we didn't really score, and then they scored the first goal.

'From that moment on we tried to chase the game and they scored the second one which was a big blow. At the end we kept pushing but it was not enough.

'We should have done better because the bit of quality we have in the team, we should have went through. We didn't deserve it because we weren't good enough.'

Romelu Lukaku suggested some of Manchester United's players went 'hiding' on Tuesday. And the Belgian striker insisted his side had not deserved to advance to the last-eight

Lukaku's goal in the 84th minute managed to lift the crowd at Old Trafford.

It was too little, too late though, and Lukaku himself thinks United needed to score before Sevilla to quell the visitors.

'We should have scored earlier, maybe in the first-half with the half chances we created,' he continued. 'The last pass today was not good enough.

'We always get in the right position but the ball to each other was not good enough, and that is what killed us today.'

Jose Mourinho and his players now turn their attentions to the FA Cup. They are into the quarter-finals in that competition.

Even so, the 24-year-old admitted his disappointment at their early exit in Europe and admitted the dressing room was quiet post-match: 'Not hiding, but I mean in the dressing room, because some people were disappointed with the result because we expected better from ourselves.

'We know we have a lot of quality in the team but today we didn't show it. So, it was difficult for us. We have to bounce back, we have one trophy to chase, and that's the FA Cup.

'But we wanted to go very far in the Champions League because that's what a club like Manchester United need to do, and we didn't do it today so we're very disappointed.'

Manchester United legends round on Jose Mourinho after shock Champions League exit to Sevilla at Old Trafford

* Manchester United were dumped out of Champions League after loss to Sevilla
* Rio Ferdinand said Jose Mourinho's side were 'terrible' at Old Trafford
* Paul Scholes fiercely criticised Mourinho's tactics against Spanish club

Manchester United greats rounded on Jose Mourinho after they were embarrassingly dumped out of the Champions League by unfancied Sevilla.

Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes slammed the manager and his players as a late Wissam Ben Yedder double sent Sevilla through on one of the worst nights in United's European history.

Ferdinand went as far as to say United's players looked like strangers, while Mourinho himself astonishingly proclaimed: 'That's football, it's not the end of the world.'

'Terrible,' Ferdinand fumed. 'They looked like a team thrown together full of strangers.

'They went out there and played nervously and cautiously, you’ve got to take the game by the scruff of the neck. They gave nothing for the fans to cheer about.

'Top teams don’t pick and choose when they play. They are consistently good.'

Rio Ferdinand described Manchester United as 'a team of strangers' after Sevilla defeat

Paul Scholes has fiercely criticised Jose Mourinho's tactics against Sevilla on Tuesday night

United only registered four shots on target over the two legs, which Mourinho dismissed as 'just statistics'. But Scholes claimed the two performances were indicative of the Portuguese's reign.

'That's the way the manager likes to play, on the counter attack,' Scholes said. 'It was difficult watching that and the first game. There is no desire, no energy, no speed. It's unexplainable. Teams go and try. United didn't try and win the game away from home.

'Surely the manager must see Sanchez's not been good enough. He doesn't know his best front three. He needs to choose his best and leave Sanchez out.'

Ferdinand added: 'The attitude seemed off. Lethargic. The onus was on them to attack but they started conservatively. This team looked like a team who didn't have it in them to win it.'

Mourinho launched an impassioned defence of his management, claiming to have 'no regrets' and refused to overreact, despite Sevilla lying outside the top four in La Liga and United having been overwhelming favourites to reach the quarter-finals.

'I don't want to make a drama out of it,' Mourinho said. 'We have no time for that. We have no time to be sad for more than 24 hours. That's football, it's not the end of the world.

'I've sat here twice, with Porto when United went out, with Real Madrid when United went out. It's not something new for the club. Being United manager and losing at home is not disappointing.

'I don't think the performance was bad. The intention and the way we started was positive. Everything together needs to change here. Everybody spends money - it's not just us.'
