'Almost like a young Cristiano... he's definitely one for the future and for now': Alejandro Garnacho hailed by Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves after teen winger impressed in first start for Man United in Europa League win over Sheriff

* Alejandro Garnacho was handed his first senior start for Manchester United
* Erik ten Hag said the youngster 'deserved' a start after impressing in training
* Paul Scholes compared Garnacho to a 'young' Cristiano Ronaldo after the game
* Garnacho impressed as the Red Devils beat Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 on Thursday

Paul Scholes has compared Alejandro Garnacho to Cristiano Ronaldo after the Manchester United youngster impressed on his first start for the club.

There was a surprise in the United team-sheet, as Erik ten Hag put the Argentine youngster in the starting line-up for the first time, in what turned out to be a 3-0 victory for the Red Devils over Sheriff Tiraspol.

Garnacho's performance will have impressed many, as he continually ran at the opposition and provided a big threat - with his performance just missing a goal or assist.

After the game, Scholes said: 'This crowd loves entertainment and this lad was really entertaining. Almost like a young Cristiano at this age.

'Taking the skill, taking the ball down as he did. I was impressed as some wingers can only go one way sometimes and he's a right footed winger.

'Some say you can't go down that left hand side but he did and it makes him so unpredictable. His performance was exciting and he really is one to look for the future.

Owen Hargreaves agreed with Scholes, describing him as the most effective of a front three also involving Ronaldo and Antony.

The ex-United star said: 'He had real quality the thing I liked about him was he was direct. He ran at defenders all the time. He had the stepovers, the tricks that had a bit of function.

'I think he had a bit of everything he was just missing a goal or assist. But for 18-years-old he was the most effective of the front three players. He's definitely one for the future and for now actually.'

Before the match, Ten Hag praised Garnacho for impressing in training, and claimed that was why he decided to give the Argentine forward a chance.

When asked if Garnacho had done well in training, Ten Hag responded: 'Yes, that's why he gets the opportunity, he deserves it.

'He likes runs behind, likes dribbles, likes finishing and I'm really wondering, and I hope, he can do that tonight.

'We have a front three, with Cristiano and Antony, who all have opportunities, who have skills, who run behind, to create, to have dribbles and to have combinations in tight areas, which is what we expect from them, to create opportunities and goals.'

Garnacho made his first senior team appearance off the bench against Chelsea last season.

This campaign, he has come off the bench in games against Brighton in the Premier League, and Real Sociedad in the Europa League, but he has mostly been used an used substitute.

Former Manchester United youth boss Neil Wood warns that Erik ten Hag's decision to bring Alejandro Garnacho into the club's first team set-up could ultimately harm winger's development

* Neil Wood expressed concerns over Alejandro Garnacho's first senior start
* The former Man United youth boss warned of the dangers of overexposure
* Garnacho impressed in his first Europa League start as the club defeated Sheriff
* Wood worked extensively with Garnacho at United in the club's youth setup

Former Manchester United youth boss Neil Wood has questioned Erik ten Hag's decision to bring starlet Alejandro Garnacho into the club's first team setup.

Having developed a sizeable buzz at Old Trafford thanks to his performances for United's u23s, the Argentina youth international was entrusted by Ten Hag to make a number of cameo appearances in both the Premier League and in Europe earlier this season.

However, Garnacho got his first real taste of first-team football when he made his first senior start for the club when United hosted FC Sheriff in the Europa League.

Garnacho made an immediate impact on the game and already fans have been calling the Dutch manager to fully integrate the youngster into the first team setup.

However, Neil Wood worked extensively with the young prospect during his time as manager of the club's u23 side and warned that overexposure to the senior game at such a young age could prove detrimental to Garnacho's development as a player.

Speaking to The Athletic, the now-Salford City manager explained: 'I get that fans like to see young players thrown in but I don’t know if throwing him into the first team is the best thing to do.

'The standards are so high, you can’t be expected to turn it on immediately at Old Trafford, but expectations are high for young players. Too much too soon can damage a player’s development.'

Alejandro Garnacho impressed fans after making his first senior start for Manchester United in the Europa League. However former United youth boss Neil Wood warned that overexposure to senior football could be detrimental to his development. The now Salford City boss also warned that the heightened expectations for senior players can harm young stars

Though Wood was apprehensive about Ten Hag's decision to include the youngster in the senior squad, he assured that he was under no illusions about 18-year-old's potential.

'There’s no doubt he has talent, can score individual goals and that he’s good at dribbling.' Wood said.

'That’s one of his main attributes but there are areas he needs to improve – his passing, keeping the ball, protecting the ball, hiding the ball when he’s dribbling, being more productive with his end product, creating more assists. There’s loads more to come, but he’s still young and hasn’t been at the club for long.'

Default Re: Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra

Alejandro Garnacho dazzled on his first Man United start and had Old Trafford on its feet... with Jadon Sancho devoid of confidence, the teen sensation deserves another chance vs West Ham today

* Alejandro Garnacho was handed his first start for Man United on Thursday
* He delivered a standout performance that delighted the home crowd
* Meanwhile, Jadon Sancho has lost form and looks low on confidence right now
* Erik ten Hag has a big decision to make over who to play against West Ham
* Based on their recent performances, Garnacho has to get the nod over Sancho

Manchester United's Europa League clash with Sheriff on Thursday saw Cristiano Ronaldo return to the side for the first time since refusing to come on as a substitute and storming down the tunnel against Tottenham eight days earlier.

The Portuguese star was always likely to take centre stage, and he managed to get on the scoresheet late on to cap off a routine 3-0 win for the Red Devils.

But it was one of his team-mates who stole the show at Old Trafford - Alejandro Garnacho.

The teenager was a surprise inclusion in Erik ten Hag's starting line-up, given that the United boss has been reluctant to rotate his squad heavily this term.

The Dutchman clearly believed he was ready, though, picking Garnacho ahead of Jadon Sancho and Anthony Elanga, and he was proved absolutely right.

Alejandro Garnacho stole the show on his first start for Manchester United on Thursday. Garnacho outshone Antony even though the Brazilian pulled off a 720-degree spin in the game

Some players look nervous when they make their first professional start, especially at a club as big as United, but Garnacho was brimming with confidence from the outset, demanding the ball from his team-mates.

Every time he received it, the crowd rose to their feet, sensing he could produce something special.

The 18-year-old Argentine ran at the Sheriff defence at every opportunity, throwing in step-overs and even pulling off a cheeky nutmeg as he dazzled on his full debut, and outshone fellow winger Antony, despite the Brazilian pulling off a remarkable 720-degree spin in the first half.

Paul Scholes compared him to a 'young' Cristiano Ronaldo in his post-match analysis, and it was hardly an outlandish claim.

The swagger and fearlessness that Garnacho played with was reminiscent of the Ronaldo that arrived at Old Trafford almost two decades ago.

Admittedly, Ronaldo was something of a rough diamond that needed polishing at that stage, with his end product questionable, and Garnacho may have similar obstacles to overcome in the future. But he was a breath of fresh air in United's side, and gave them an injection of energy down the left-hand side that has been missing in recent weeks.

This has largely been due to the form of Sancho. The £73m signing from Borussia Dortmund struggled in his first season at the club last term, but had looked to be finding his feet at the start of the current campaign.

Garnacho played with no fear at Old Trafford. Erik Ten Hag believes Garnacho can get even better after his impressive Old Trafford full debut. Jadon Sancho has been struggling in recent weeks and looks low on confidence right now

Goals against Liverpool and Leicester highlighted what he is capable of when at his best, and he was arguably a touch unfortunate to be left out of Gareth Southgate's England squad last month.

However, his performances have dipped dramatically since then, and he now looks completely devoid of any confidence.

Playing against Manchester City at the start of the month, he offered very little protection to Tyrell Malacia as Pep Guardiola's side ran riot in the first half, and he wasn't a threat at all from an attacking perspective.

Fast forward three weeks, and he was even less effective against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old winger constantly opted for the safe option rather than taking on his man, while his passing was wayward when he got into promising positions. He could have no complaints when he was hauled off by Ten Hag seven minutes after half time.

On the whole, Ten Hag has been loyal to Sancho this season, leaving him out of his starting line-up just once in the league to date. Yet Garnacho's performance will have given him food for thought.

Ten Hag labelled Garnacho a 'talent' after his impressive display, but challenged him to get even better.

'He is a talent. I hope for him it's a stimulant, [his] first game, that he knows "I have to do better, to create more,"' Ten Hag said in his post-match press conference.

Ten Hag may want Garnacho to get even better, but there can be little doubt that he produced more in Thursday's outing than Sancho has lately.

The youngster led United's Under-18s to FA Youth Cup glory last season, scoring seven goals in six matches, and he has already been picking the brains of Lionel Messi after being called up to the Argentina national team squad in March. He is ready for this level.

Now Ten Hag must choose whether to stand by Sancho or reward Garnacho for his performance by starting him against West Ham on Sunday.

Sancho is the big-money signing with 23 international caps to his name, so it is easy to see why United are desperate for the move to work.

But he isn't delivering at the moment, and hasn't been for some time. It could be time to take him out of the firing line, and Garnacho would be the perfect replacement.

Teenage players bursting onto the scene can be inconsistent. Is Garnacho going to play that well every game? It seems unlikely.

He deserves the chance to prove that he can back up his eye-catching against Sheriff, though.

United are the joint-lowest scorers in the top eight in the Premier League. They have scored 20 fewer goals than City across their opening 11 matches and badly need extra creativity on the pitch.

Garnacho can provide that with his trickery and positive decision-making in the final third, and that is why he has to get the nod over Sancho on Sunday.

'It's a lovely finish... he's played twice and he's been AMAZING': Alejandro Garnacho hailed by Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves after 18-year-old winger scored his FIRST Manchester United goal with a superb run and strike against Real Sociedad

* The Argentine started the game in place of Marcus Rashford in San Sebastian
* Brilliant effort that took Manchester United to the brink of Europa League last 16
* They could not find the second goal that would have meant they finished top
* Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes praised Garnacho for overall performance

Manchester United's teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho scored his first goal for the club as they went half way to their objective in San Sebastian.

Needing to win by two clear goals to avoid the play-off round against sides dropping into the Europa League from the Champions League, United took the lead in the first half through a well-taken effort from the Argentine Garnacho.

Starting ahead of Marcus Rashford, Garnacho grabbed his opportunity with both hands with a lovely effort that saw him combine well with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Having been praised for his fearlessness and adventure prior to the game by Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes, Garnacho followed up his encouraging performance in last week's Europa League tie against Sheriff with another strong showing.

The ball was launched long by David de Gea before being headed on by Bruno Fernandes into the path of Ronaldo.

Alejandro Garnacho was electric for Manchester United as they led at the break in Spain

Breaking to the left of the Portuguese was the Argentine, who managed to slip off the shoulder of his marker and in behind. Ronaldo's ball was perfectly weighted with Garnacho latching onto it before taking two excellent touches to get away from the defender before lashing it into the roof of the net.

Speaking on BT Sport at half-time, both Hargreaves and Scholes praised the young player before crediting him with being United's best in another encouraging performance.

'I'm really pleased for the young lad, he's been United's best player,' Scholes said.

'That second touch really makes the goal, he gets it out of his feet and slides it into the top corner. I think he's been far and away the biggest attacking threat on the pitch. I don't think the keeper covers himself in glory, but it's a lovely finish.'

Meanwhile, Hargreaves added: 'That's the great thing about young kids, they play with a real enthusiasm. Every time he touches it he runs forward, the first touch is amazing. It is great to see him mentored by Cristiano [Ronaldo].

'He's a really good player and it's nice to see him performing on the biggest stage.'

Following the second half, in which United failed to live up to the heights of their first period performance, Garnacho once again came in for praise from the BT Sport punditry team.

'He's a young lad, he's going to learn,' Scholes said, referencing Fernandes' comments that Garnacho's initial struggles this season had been down to some attitude problems.

'His attitude has changed and we're seeing the benefits of that, now he looks a really top class young player. He's only 18-year-olds. He was really good last week and scored a good goal tonight. He had some problems, but he's striving to change.

'Going off the the evidence that we've seen, he's played twice and he's been amazing', Hargreaves added. 'Two games so far and he's been the difference maker. I'm proud of him - when you step on that stage as a young guy you never know, sink or swim. So far, he's done a great job.'

Alejandro Garnacho savours 'dream' moment Cristiano Ronaldo gave him permission to perform his new sleeping celebration after his first goal for Man United... as 18-year-old hails his 'idol'

* Alejandro Garnacho asks Cristiano Ronaldo's permission to do his celebration
* Garnacho scored a stunning goal in Man United's 1-0 win over Real Sociedad
* After scoring, he can be seen asking Ronaldo if he can use the celebration

Alejandro Garnacho asked Cristiano Ronaldo for his permission to perform his new 'napping' celebration after scoring his first goal for Manchester United.

The teenager scored with a stunning strike to give United a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in their final Europa League group game.

The strike was made even more special for the 18-year-old given how it was his 'idol' Ronaldo that put him through on goal, capping off a 'dream' first goal for his club.

As he celebrated with his United team-mates, Garnacho can be seen asking Ronaldo if he could use his new celebration while gesturing it to the Portuguese talisman.

The heartwarming moment makes Ronaldo laugh, before he pats Garnacho on the head and grants him his wish.

A moment later, the young Argentinian pulls away from his United team-mates and is seen paying tribute to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

Garnacho took to social media after the game to thank Ronaldo for his part in making it a night he'd never forget.

Garnacho tweeted: '18 years and 125 days dreaming of this moment. Thanks Idol, @Cristiano'

Garnacho's strike also earned the plaudits of United greats Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves, who were full of praise for the young forward.

Speaking on BT Sport at half-time, both Hargreaves and Scholes credited him with being United's best in another encouraging performance.

'I'm really pleased for the young lad, he's been United's best player,' Scholes said.

Ronaldo has recently ditched his trademark 'SIUUU' celebration in favour of his new sleeping one, which is said to be a self-deprecating in-joke between Ronaldo and his team-mates, according to Manchester United's official website.

Ronaldo is renowned for keeping himself in good shape off the pitch and also ensures that he gets plenty of rest, with the celebration representing the position in Ronaldo sleeps when he is travelling with the squad.

The 37-year-old used his new celebration after scoring his 700th goal of his career in a win over Everton last month, while his impact on the footballing world has seen the celebration being used by other players – and even young mascots.

While it will have been another dream come true for Garnacho, the same can't be said for United and Erik ten Hag, who fell short in topping their Europa League group.

United needed to win by a two-goal margin against Real Sociedad to finish top and guarantee their spot in the knockout stages.

Now, United face the prospect of facing a Champions League dropout in a play-off game for a place in the next round, potentially setting up a meeting with the likes of Barcelona and Juventus.

United will find out their play-off opponents on Monday.

'There are some things he has to improve… he has to do the right things in his lifestyle': Alejandro Garnacho urged to 'keep working' by Man United boss Erik ten Hag after impressive cameo in 4-2 win over Aston Villa

* Erik ten Hag has told Man United starlet Alejandro Garnacho to 'keep working'
* The Argentinian winger came off the bench in United's Carabao Cup clash
* He picked up two assists for Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay
* Ten Hag's side booked their spot in the next round with a 4-2 win over Aston Villa

Erik ten Hag has told Alejandro Garnacho he must keep working to force his way into the Manchester United side after an exciting cameo in Thursday's 4-2 come-from-behind win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

Garnacho came off the bench moments after Diogo Dalot's own goal had given Villa their second lead of the night at Old Trafford but, after Marcus Rashford equalised for the hosts, Garnacho got two assists as Bruno Fernandes put them in front before Scott McTominay sealed it late on.

The 18-year-old Argentinian had the Old Trafford faithful off their seats every time he got on the ball.

He set up Fernandes when Robin Olsen spilled a cross into his path in the 78th minute, then picked out McTominay with a deep cross from the left in stoppage time.

Garnaco scored his first senior goal in United's 1-0 win over Real Sociedad last week and it is clear fans wants to see more of him, but he was held back by Ten Hag after missing meetings during the club's pre-season tour, and the boss once again laid down a marker over his attitude.

'It was good that he came on and showed that performance and had that impact in the game, to be able to assist, make the dribbles and run behind,' Ten Hag said.

'There are some things he has to improve, for instance when we go long to go for the second balls. He still has things to learn but quite obviously we are happy with his development and he can contribute to the team.

'It depends on his approach, his attitude. When he keeps working then yes, it is possible (for him to play more). He wants to improve every day. He has to do the right things in his lifestyle. He has the capability.'

Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho had an impressive cameo on Thursday. Erik ten Hag has told the winger to 'keep working' to earn a Man United starting spot. The 18-year-old Argentinian came on and grabbed two assists against Aston Villa

Thursday's win sets up a last-16 clash at home to Vincent Kompany's Burnley, and also gives United a measure of revenge for Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Villa Park - United's first loss since the derby defeat to Manchester City on October 2.

Both sides were flat in a poor first half, but the match came to life after the break and Ten Hag was pleased with the spirit shown by United as they twice came from behind.

'The fighting spirit was back,' he said. 'The players are not robots, I know that but what I can't accept is that you get beaten like on Sunday. It was quite clear, the reaction from the team today.

'To go down and fight like this I see progress in our attitude and mentality. We are going in the right direction.'

Villa's 3-1 win at the weekend marked Unai Emery's first game in charge, but the Spaniard had to mark his second down as a learning experience as his side were twice unable to hold the lead.

They went in front through Ollie Watkins in the 48th minute but allowed Anthony Martial to level within seconds, and the lead given to them by Diogo Dalot's 61st minute own goal only lasted six minutes before Rashford struck.

'For 75 minutes we competed well and we were having chances,' he said. 'In the last 15 minutes was the moment we lost a little bit our mentality. We have to improve and work on this in the days before the match against Brighton.

'I learned a lot because the players gave me a lot of information in the performance. I am not 100 per cent happy with the performance on Sunday and not with tonight but I think in both matches there were more good things than bad.'

'He's got the full package': Jamie Redknapp heaps praise on Alejandro Garnacho after Man United teen nets his first Premier League goal to beat Fulham... and adds that 'all of the best players have the rascal gene' amid concerns over his attitude

* Alejandro Garnacho netted his first Premier League goal in win over Fulham
* Manchester United star's late strike secured three points at Craven Cottage
* Jamie Redknapp led the praise for the teenager following United's win
* Former United star Luis Saha compared Garnacho to a young Wayne Rooney

Jamie Redknapp hailed Alejandro Garnacho's performance in Manchester United's win over Fulham.

With United looking to be heading towards a disappointing draw at Craven Cottage, the youngster found space inside the hosts' penalty box and slid the ball past Bernd Leno to snatch victory.

The strike comes just days after Garnacho dazzled fans with a spectacular performance in United's EFL Cup win over Aston Villa. Appearing as a second-half substitute and contributing two assists as Erik ten Hag's team came from behind to progress in the competition.

Following the win over Fulham, Redknapp noted the completeness of the youngster's game: 'He's got so much talent of either foot. He travels so well, right foot, left foot. He looks like he's got the full package.'

Though the 18-year-old has had an undeniable impact on Ten Hag's squad, murmurs of perceived attitude problems, particularly over the summer, plagued his initial involvement at senior level.

Ten Hag has since claimed that Garnacho's attitude has improved, but Redknapp was quick to stress that the Argentina youth international's personality should not be viewed as detriment to his performances on the pitch.

Jamie Redknapp led praise for Manchester United starlet Alejandro Garnacho after the club's win over Fulham. Garnacho scored his first Premier League goal in injury time to secure three points for United. Redknapp defended the teen's alleged attitude problems remarking that great players have a 'bit of devilment about them'. Louis Saha compared the youngster to Wayne Rooney after Rooney joined United in 2004. United boss Erik ten Hag praised the 18-year-old's 'mentality' following the victory

'All of the best players have the rascal gene. You don't want a team of Gary Neville's. The greats have that little bit of devilment about them, look at Wayne Rooney.

It doesn't always add up but look at them. You want match winners. If you go through the greats in history most have had a little bit of madness about them.'

Louis Saha arrived at Old Trafford in January 2004, just months before Rooney first made the move to United. Speaking following the game the Frenchman claimed that comparisons between Garnacho and the club legend were not premature.

'All of those talks around a player are a part of it. The main way to talk is on the field and I think that's what he's doing. He's focusing on how he can improve and how he can improve the team.

'Of course, at this age, you can look at Rooney at the start of his career he was not polished but he had this fire and everyone respected that. And I think this kid can do the same.'

Though he had previously expressed reservations about the frequency of Garnacho's involvement at first-team level, Ten Hag could not help but praise the winger following the win.

'That is fantastic. First he shows the mentality you need. Under stress he's performing, he's coming in, he has an impact, he has the belief. Twice in three, four days, so that is really good.

'I'm really happy that we can bring a young player up and it shows that when players deserve it they get their chances. That is the first one but we have to bring more.

'He's great. I like that he has a big belief and that's great to work with. He likes football. He's a real pleasure.'

Erik Ten Hag calls for Alejandro Garnacho to 'keep his feet on the ground' and not 'lose focus' during the World Cup break... after the teenage star came off the bench to score Man United's late winner against Fulham

* Alejandro Garnacho scored Man United's winning goal against Fulham
* He will not go to the World Cup, so has over a month without a competitive game
* Erik Ten Hag has told Garnacho to 'keep his feet on the ground' after his display
* He wants Garnacho to maintain his focus for when the Premier League returns

Erik Ten Hag warned Alejandro Garnacho about the ‘danger’ of losing focus during the World Cup break after the teenager’s latest heroics in the win over Fulham.

Ten Hag has been trying to keep Garnacho grounded in the midst of his breakthrough season for United, and wants to make sure he is still in the right shape physically and mentally when the season resumes next month.

After the 18-year-old climbed off the bench to score his first Premier League goal at Craven Cottage, the United boss cautioned that he has to continue working hard while his teammates are at the World Cup.

Garnacho will train at Carrington and go on a warm-weather training trip to Cadiz with the rest of the players who aren’t on duty in Qatar.

‘This shows what talent can do but it is still a long way to go,’ said Ten Hag.

‘He has to keep his feet on the ground. He has to do much more investment. Big players know that, young players don't know.

‘Now it's a four-week break, that's already a danger for him, because he now has momentum.

‘Let's see how he's coming back. We have to manage that with him. His attitude is good and I'm certain he will have an impact.

‘The danger is four weeks, no games, lose focus, less investment. It's only when he stays on the same attitude that he's working the last three, four or five weeks the process will keep going and his progress will keep going. If not, it goes the other way around.’

Ten Hag praised Garnacho’s impact in recent weeks and admitted he could never have foreseen his faith in the 18-year-old paying off so handsomely.

‘Alejandro had a big impact in the win,’ added the Dutchman. ‘The spotlight is on that and that is also justified because it was a great finish because that is what you expect that from subs coming in.

‘I am really happy with his progress. We have an extra player in the squad and I'm happy for the academy.

‘But also I want to emphasise the way we scored that goal all the way from the back to the front. I think it was a massive brilliant assist from Christian Eriksen.

‘We're going in the right direction, and I think we have a base. The culture has changed. The attitude has changed and that's good. We have also improved. We have got a better mentality and you saw that today with the winner in the last minute.

‘We are now united, we have togetherness. The dressing-room, the staff, the directors, the whole club and the fans. I'm really happy with that development.’

Alejandro Garnacho causes a stir by 'liking' a tweet saying he wasn't called up to Argentina's World Cup squad 'because he is Spanish'... with the Madrid-born Man United star eligible to play for either country

* Argentina didn't call up Garnacho despite suffering two injury withdrawals
* Nicolas Gonzalez and Joaquin Correa left World Cup squad with knocks
* There was a clamour among Man United fans for Garnacho to be called up
* But Lionel Scaloni went for Angel Correa and Thiago Almada instead
* Garnacho's Twitter account appeared to like a post about his Spanish heritage
* He remains eligible to represent either Argentina or Spain internationally

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho has caused a stir after 'liking' a tweet suggesting he was overlooked for Argentina's World Cup squad because he was born in Spain.

Despite his excellent form for United in recent weeks, including a stoppage time winner at Fulham in their last match, Garnacho wasn't called up by Argentina as a replacement for the injured Nicolas Gonzalez and Joaquin Correa.

Atletico Madrid's Angel Correa and Atlanta United's Thiago Almada were picked by coach Lionel Scaloni instead.

The Twitter account @cabifyyy replied to another post saying: 'They did not call up Garnacho because he is Spanish.'

This comment was apparently liked - and later unliked again - by Garnacho's official account, something that was captured and shared on the platform by eagle-eyed fans.

Alejandro Garnacho wasn't called up to Argentina's World Cup squad as a late injury replacement despite his excellent form for Manchester United. The 18-year-old trained alongside Lionel Messi when Argentina called him up back in March

Garnacho, 18, was born in Madrid and came through the academy system at Atletico Madrid as well as representing Spain at Under-18 level.

But his mother is from Argentina, meaning he holds dual nationality and can also represent them.

In March this year, Garnacho was called up to the Argentina senior team ahead of their two World Cup qualifiers that month and he trained alongside Lionel Messi and Co.

However, he did not play in either match, meaning he isn't yet fully committed to Argentina as a result of playing for them in a competitive fixture and could still play for Spain.

He has made five appearances since for Argentina's Under-20 side, including in the Maurice Revello Tournament in southern France, in which he scored four goals in four games.

Garnacho celebrated United's FA Youth Cup triumph back in May with the Argentine flag.

Eagle-eyed fans on Twitter spotted Garnacho's official account 'like' a comment saying he was overlooked by Argentina 'because he is Spanish'. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni decided to call up Angel Correa into his World Cup squad instead of Garnacho

Despite scoring his first senior goal for United in a Europa League match against Real Sociedad and then netting his first Premier League goal against Fulham, he was overlooked for Argentina's World Cup squad.

Instead, he is expected to be part of the United party heading to Spain for a warm weather training camp next month and two friendlies with Cadiz and Real Betis while the World Cup is going on.

Default Re: Alejandro Garnacho Ferreyra

GARNACHO NAMED NOVEMBER'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Eighteen-year-old attacker Alejandro Garnacho has been voted Manchester United’s Player of the Month for November, following a standout 11 days.

With the season taking a break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Reds played a total of just four fixtures in November, but Garnacho more than made his mark.

Across our matches, the youngster scored two goals and assisted twice, as the Reds ended the first part of the season on a positive note, courtesy of his last-minute winner at Fulham.

The Argentinian started the month in the best possible way, scoring the winner in our 1-0 away triumph at Real Sociedad – his first senior goal for the Reds.

Garnacho raced in behind the San Sebastian side’s defence and finished a devastating counter-attack in style, giving United supporters a flavour of what was to come from him in the next three fixtures.

Alejandro started his first Premier League match on Sunday 6 November, away to Aston Villa. While the Reds were disappointingly defeated 3-1, the 18-year-old made sure his side avoided a repeat of that when the Villans visited Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup just four days later.

Alejandro Garnacho has been voted Man United's Player of the Month for November

Starting on the bench, the youngster joined the action just after the hour mark, with United trailing 2-1. After Marcus Rashford levelled the score on 67 minutes, the Argentinian winger stole the headlines.

First, superb pressing saw the Reds win the ball high up the pitch, before Garnacho set up Bruno Fernandes to put Erik ten Hag’s side in front. And then, in added time, the 18-year-old cut inside effortlessly and produced a simply sublime pass to Scott McTominay, which the midfielder finished.

Following his performance against Villa, fans were clamouring for Ten Hag to start Garnacho away to Fulham, in our last match before the World Cup.

But at Craven Cottage, despite being named among United's substitutes, he showed that he didn’t need to start to make an impact. Joining the fray on 72 minutes, Alejandro constantly looked a threat on the left, with his trademark quick dribbling and intricate footwork causing a headache for the Fulham defenders.

But it was the Argentinian's pace that proved to be the difference-maker in the dying moments at Craven Cottage, as he exchanged a quick one-two with Christian Eriksen before motoring beyond the helpless Bobby Decordova-Reid and slotting clinically beyond Bernd Leno.

As expected for a 93rd-minute winner, this goal prompted wild celebrations in the away end. Garnacho had notched his inaugural Premier League strike and clinched an important three points for United in our last match before the World Cup.

The performance against Fulham earned Alejandro his third Man-of-the-Match award of the month (after Real Sociedad, away, and Aston Villa). Erik has urged patience when it comes to the exciting Academy prospect, but he's already starting to make a name for himself.

The youngster beat competition from Casemiro and David De Gea in our fan poll for this month’s award, attracting a huge 69 per cent of the vote.

Of course, Casemiro's control in midfield and De Gea's resilience between the sticks also played key roles in United's three wins from four in November, but Garnacho's impact was seemingly too great to ignore.

Congratulations on the award, Alejandro!
