Marcus Rashford is 'an injury doubt for England's double-header against Iceland and Denmark with ankle problem sustained during Manchester United's Europa League run' in further blow for Gareth Southgate

Marcus Rashford is an injury doubt for England's double header against Iceland and Denmark next month.

Gareth Southgate may be without the 22-year-old as he continues to suffer with an ankle injury that he picked up during Manchester United's Europa League semi-final defeat against Sevilla.

Rashford has reportedly been advised to rest ahead of the start of the Premier League season to ensure he remains fit for the whole campaign through to the European Championships.

Marcus Rashford is an injury doubt for England's international double header next month

The Manchester United forward chose to play through the pain during their semi-final clash in Lisbon to be in contention for Southgate's squad, according to The Telegraph.

Rashford will have been hoping to represent England in their first international game in 10 months, but he may have instead stunted his return to Three Lions duty.

Southgate may look to call in reinforcements, but the responsibility to cover the man who scored in his last three international games falls to Raheem Sterling and Jadon Sancho.

Mason Greenwood, who bypassed Jack Grealish into the squad, will also look to provide England with an attacking threat.

Southgate's lineup was further hit with hit with Liverpool duo Jordan Henderson and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will also ruled out due to injury.

The additional news of Rashford's injury will come as a blow to Southgate after the announcement that three other members of the squad have been ruled out due to positive coronavirus tests.

As it stands, the England manager is facing an anxious wait to see if they have to withdraw from the fixtures in Reykjavik and Copenhagen ahead of next week's meet.

Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden are KICKED OUT of the England squad and sent home as the Icelandic beauty queen and her cousin they brought back reveal how they snuck them into the team hotel

* Mason Greenwood, 18, and Phil Foden, 20, are in hot water with England
* Both made their senior debuts against Iceland on Saturday night
* They have been caught bringing girls back to England's team hotel in Iceland
* Pair will not travel with the England squad to Copenhagen on Monday evening
* Foden has a two-year-old son and is in a long-term relationship, while Greenwood broke up with his girlfriend back in May

England youngsters Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood will not travel with their team-mates to Denmark after footage emerged of the pair bringing girls back to the team hotel in Iceland.

The FA are now working in conjunction with Manchester United and Manchester City City to arrange travel home as soon as possible, while Icelandic police have now fined the duo 250,000 Icelandic Krona (£1,300) for the rule breach during the coronavirus pandemic, which must be paid by the individuals themselves and not by the FA or their clubs.

The pair made their senior international debuts in the win over Iceland on Saturday - but those accomplishments have now been overshadowed, with footage now emerging on social media of the women in question arranging a meet-up with the young stars.

A Snapchat clip released by DV appears to show England youngsters Phil Foden (pictured) and Mason Greenwood in a hotel room with female company

The young duo were photographed in the hotel room by the girls who stopped by to visit them

In the video the Icelandic girls, one of whom is 20-year-old model Nadia Sif Lindal Gunnarsdottir, ask how the stars are going to sneak them into the hotel.

At the other end of the line, Foden could be heard responding: 'What you coming to the hotel for?', before Greenwood appears to say to his team-mate in the background: 'what do you think?'

Later footage then shows the footballers with the model and her cousin and best friend Lara Clausen, a 19-year-old law student.

One of the girls has apologised for her part in the incident, saying she felt 'really, really, really bad'.

She told MailOnline: 'I feel really sorry for him and I never wanted to put them in that position but we didn't know any better and we didn't know that they were quarantining, or else we wouldn't have gone to meet them.

Phil Foden (left) and Mason Greenwood are both heading home after breaking quarantine rules. Foden and Greenwood made their senior debuts this week

'We didn't even know who Phil was. I asked Phil who he was. I'm not that much into football. I don't watch football at all.

'We didn't even know that Mason played for Man United.

She added: 'We haven't spoken to them since. We don't want to interrupt them because they are of course going through a lot right now. They haven't contacted us.

'It was a good night that we had, of course. We were all the four of us spending time together and getting to know each other. They were nice guys. Really, really nice.'

Lara added: 'They were just young. We were all young and stupid and we all make mistakes. They treated us really well. They were such gentlemen. Really nice guys.'

The footage has been revealed hours after England manager Gareth Southgate confirmed the pair had been kicked out of the squad after they were filmed meeting with girls in the team hotel in Iceland - breaking strict coronavirus quarantine rules.

Quote:
OFFICIAL ENGLAND STATEMENT

An FA Spokesman said on Monday: 'Whilst in Iceland, both Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood spent time outside of our private team area, which was a breach of our COVID-19 rules.

'While they did not leave the team hotel, it was an unacceptable breach of our protocol. They have both apologised for their serious lack of judgement.

'The FA will be launching a full investigation into the circumstances leading up to this breach. We have spoken to the Iceland FA to offer our apologies for this incident and to ensure them that we are taking the appropriate steps.

'We have also assured the Danish FA that all other players and staff members have been isolated within our group throughout this period.

'Our immediate priority now is preparing the team for the match against Denmark tomorrow.'
Players have been given strict guidelines to ensure Covid safety - and the images - published by Icelandic outlet DV - appears to show Foden and Greenwood disregard those protocols on Sunday.

The pair's conduct in bringing girls back has also contravened the FA's behavioural rules for players whilst on international duty.

In the short clip, Foden and Greenwood appeared to be wearing their new England training wear and the players are now in hot water with management.

In an interview with DV, one of the girls in the Snapchat video allegedly filmed in the hotel room said: 'We had no idea about these [Covid-19] rules, they never said we could not take pictures.'

DV claims that the girls were booked into separate rooms in the same hotel for the players to visit them.

Another girl claimed to have notified the England stars that the pictures were in circulation with a Snapchat message, but 'they have not opened it'.

She also claimed to have been in a relationship 'with one of the boys for a few days', noting: 'The only thing I can say is that I had been talking to one of them for a few days. I'm not going to say where.'

In a separate video, the girls are reportedly seen on their way into the hotel while talking about going to meet the players in a room booked for them.

Foden has a two-year-old son and a long-term girlfriend, while United star Greenwood broke up with his model girlfriend back in May.

Manchester City midfielder Foden started for Gareth Southgate's side against Iceland on Saturday night, making his senior international debut, while Greenwood came off the bench to achieve the same accolade.

'I think at the moment I'm trying to take a lot of information in,' Southgate said at Monday's press conference.

'Obviously they have been naive, we have dealt with it appropriately. I recognise their age but the whole world is dealing with this pandemic.

'I'm a father with children, young adults, I know people get things wrong. I'm not excusing that in this instance.

'These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so can't speak in great depth. I have got to try and speak with them later in the appropriate way. They have got responsibilities and they have apologised.

'This is a job like no other in terms of the things you have to deal with. In terms of what is expected, the players who have been with us a longer time know exactly what is expected - whenever people have stepped across that line we have dealt with it appropriately.

'The two boys are going to find themselves in a position where there will be lots of judgement of them from afar.

'They understand they have got this wrong. Our job is to get on with the game.'

Southgate added: 'Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the hotel. We are still getting the depths of the information. Still getting to grips with the detail. We have spent such a long time getting measures in place and the whole squad followed that to the letter.

'I'm not going into any more details until I'm clear of everything. No-one from outside the hotel has been into the areas we occupy.'

Former England international Trevor Sinclair shared his thoughts on Twitter, writing: 'Boys will be boys. Let's not destroy our own young players. Learn and be better, end of x.'

Manchester City produced a statement on Monday afternoon in what they described were actions that are 'totally inappropriate' of Foden.

'Manchester City FC are aware of the story which has emerged today from the England national team camp in relation to the behaviour of Phil Foden,' the club statement read.

'We have also seen the comments from England manager Gareth Southgate. It is clear that Phil's actions were totally inappropriate.

'His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.

'The Club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the Club are now in touch in relation to Phil's enforced early return to the UK. We have no further comment to make on this matter.'

Manchester United revealed they are 'liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation.'

Back in June, Foden found himself in trouble for breaching social distancing rules by playing football on a beach in Merseyside.

Foden, who was supposed to avoid close contact as part of Project Restart restrictions outside of contact training sessions, was challenged by members of the public during the lockdown heatwave while on Formby beach and he was spoken to by the club and reminded of his responsibilities.

While the pair would have been looking ahead to England's next fixture against Denmark in Copenhagen on Tuesday night, they will now leave Iceland under a dark cloud.

The pair were both absent from England training on Monday and it was then confirmed that they would leave the camp and travel home before the team's second and final match.

Sportsmail has contacted the players' agents for comment.

'I feel good and I'm DESPERATE to start': Harry Maguire insists he's FIT for crunch Euro 2020 clash with Scotland after surprising England coaching and medical staff with his fitness after returning from ankle injury

* Harry Maguire has declared himself fit to start against Scotland at Wembley
* Maguire has not played since sustaining ankle ligament damage on May 9
* Defender has taken part in six training sessions since joining up with England

Harry Maguire has given England a major boost ahead of Friday's European Championship clash with Scotland by declaring himself fit to start at Wembley.

The Manchester United defender has not played since sustaining ankle ligament damage in a Premier League win at Aston Villa on May 9, and has only taken part in six training sessions since joining up with England a fortnight ago, but insists he is ready to return with England seeking to book their place in the last 16 at the earliest opportunity.

'I feel good and I'm desperate to start,' Maguire said. 'In terms of the ankle, I feel like it's stable and I'm ready to go. I feel fit and fresh. I've done a few sessions now and feel like my fitness is there so, like I say, I'm available for the game.'

Maguire has surprised England's coaching and medical staff with his fitness and conditioning since he trained with his team-mates for the first time at St George's Park last Thursday, but it would still be a surprise if Gareth Southgate opted to start him in such a crucial game.

Tyrone Mings formed an impressive central defensive partnership with John Stones in Sunday's 1-0 win over Croatia, with Kieran Trippier's contribution crucial to helping the Aston Villa defender adjust to his first experience of tournament football.

Maguire's availability remains a major fillip for Southgate ahead of next week's final group game against the Czech Republic and the remainder of the competition however, with the 28-year-old expressing gratitude for the faith the manager has shown in him.

'I've had contact with Gareth ever since the injury, he's always wanted to know how I'm getting on and how the rehab is going,' Maguire said.

'He has shown great faith and trust in me since I made my debut, in every camp.'

Default Re: England - News and Rumours

Marcus Rashford insists England 'aren't scared of ANY team' at Euro 2020 and Man United star says he is revved up for 'one of the biggest games' Three Lions will play at this tournament against Scotland

* Marcus Rashford says Southgate's England don't feel threatened by anyone
* He says there are teams that have impressed them but he says they aren't scared
* Rashford says they are the teams they want to play and that they get excited for
* The forward says he is looking forward to the atmosphere for the Scotland game

There is nobody better at getting his message heard than England forward Marcus Rashford.

Whether he was discussing his recent reception with Barack Obama, his relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson or his inspiring fight against child hunger, the 23-year-old, once again, hit all the right notes at St George's Park on Wednesday.

But it was football that was at the forefront of Rashford's thoughts, primarily England's chances of lifting the Euro 2020 trophy.

Every team at this year's Euros has played at least once now. France's win over Germany on Tuesday, without really having to shift out of third gear, won't have gone unnoticed. Nor will Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired stroll against Hungary.

Marcus Rashford says Gareth Southgate's England squad don't feel threatened by anyone

Rashford, though, remains in a bullish mood. 'One thing I'd say is we are not scared of any team we come up against,' said the Manchester United star.

'You have to work hard and believe in yourself and your team-mates. If you don't do that you may as well forget about winning.

'We're not scared of any other teams. Are there teams that have played well and impressed us? Yes, definitely. There have been some strong performances, some performances that make you sit back and enjoy football.

'Going forward, if we are going to win the tournament we are going to have to play against the best teams in the tournament. We want to look forward to those games.

'We don't want to be scared of playing against these teams. We have exposed ourselves to more of these big games against the best teams, the biggest nations and some of the best players in the world and we've managed to deal with it and win a lot more of the games than before the World Cup.

'I remember before the World Cup in 2018, we were struggling against the big teams to get results. I think after the World Cup, we've managed to get some better results and played some of our best football.'

Of course, England must clinch victory against Scotland at Wembley on Friday before even thinking about mixing it with France and Portugal.

Sunday's win over Croatia takes the pressure off the domestic showdown but defeat by Steve Clarke's side could leave Gareth Southgate's men in a tight spot heading into Tuesday's final group game against the Czech Republic.

Friday will certainly be an emotional affair — that comes with the territory in such games.

Rashford admits there are teams that have 'impressed' them but insists they aren't scared. He says they are the games that England want to play and that they get excited for. If they beat Scotland they will be guaranteed a place in the next round of the tournament

But while Rashford admits England have to be business-like, he realises that is far easier said than done against the Scots.

'As players you want to play in the biggest, most historical games,' he said.

'Through our careers this is going to be up there with one of the biggest games that we play, one of the games we remember for the rest of our careers. For me, I look back at the last time I played against them (in 2017) — the atmosphere, the build-up, it was unique.

'In football everyone wants to be beat everyone, but in some games, how the game is being played, the atmosphere, the crowd and how much you want to win — it all comes together.

'It's similar to club games against Manchester City and Liverpool —you have a different feeling. You can't put a finger on it because you approach every game the same. It's just unique.'

Whether or not Rashford starts the game, however, remains to be seen. He only played the final 19 minutes against Croatia.

Raheem Sterling's winning goal and performance means he is likely to keep his place in the starting XI, so Rashford is effectively competing with Phil Foden for a spot.

'You have to be a professional about it, you can't say that you are not upset or annoyed if you start as a substitute because as a player that's natural,' he said.

'You want to play every game, but it's about your reaction to that and if you start putting your head down and sulking and not training properly, it doesn't have a good effect on the team.

'For me, I just keep working hard in training and in the games if I do come on or if I start.

'You move on from it and I'm happy the team got the three points, that's the main thing.'

Three points Friday and England can start dreaming.

'There is no point fearing the past... we want to make history': Marcus Rashford insists England's fearless stars will not lose sleep ahead of their last-16 showdown with old foe Germany at Wembley next week

* Marcus Rashford insists England are ready to make history at Euro 2020
* As Germany lie in wait, Rashford is unfazed by England's poor past against them
* He embodies the youth and fearlessness in Gareth Southgate’s squad

The fixture that used to leave England squads seeing ghosts is now the fixture that leaves an England squad seeing a glorious opportunity.

Marcus Rashford listened to history being relayed at St George’s Park on Thursday, of those miserable experiences at the hands of Germany in Turin, London and Bloemfontein, but was completely unflustered by it all. His reason was simple: why should England be worried by a name?

Tradition may demand that a collision with Germany be viewed with trepidation but Rashford embodies the youth and fearlessness in Gareth Southgate’s squad. No sleep will be lost ahead of a date at Wembley that has the potential to create legends.

‘We are blessed to be part of that history,’ Rashford said. ‘Our main focus is to win the game — if we do, it gets put in history. That’s how great teams are remembered.

‘There is no point fearing the past. You can’t go back and change it. What we can change is the result of the next game. It is a game with a lot of top players involved, so as players they are the ones you look forward to.

‘You want to test yourself against the best. To win the tournament, we are going to have to beat the best teams. It is as simple as that. So we have to be up for it — we have to be ready, go there and try to win the game.’

England received a visit from pop star Ed Sheeran on Wednesday evening, entertaining the squad with some of his songs over a BBQ, but it was Rashford who struck all the right notes when he discussed the possibilities this tournament now offers.

Fearless Marcus Rashford insists England are ready to make history at Euro 2020. England have had plenty of miserable experiences at the hands of Germany over the years. England were dumped out of the World Cup semi-finals on penalties by Germany in 1990. But Rashford is unflustered by it all, saying: 'why should England be worried by a name?'

Topping Group D has created a clear path to the final and it will become even more straightforward if the Germans are dispatched. Why, then, should they be fretting about tussles that took place before many of them were even born?

The reality is they won’t be. Southgate might have his own personal story with Germany but it wasn’t mentioned at all in training on Thursday. He did not try to build it up or give it added emphasis — that is his way.

Southgate will tap into the excitement that bubbled as the squad split in half to watch Portugal’s game with France and Germany’s scrap with Hungary on separate televisions, shouting updates to each other as the last-16 foes kept changing.

‘It was a little crazy, people just shouting over who scored,’ said Rashford. ‘It was a moment for the team to sit down and relax because you are training hard every day. You very rarely get time to come away from it and just be normal people.

MARCUS MAY OPT FOR SHOULDER SURGERY

Marcus Rashford may miss the start of next season after revealing he is considering surgery to cure a long-standing shoulder issue.

The Manchester United striker has been managing the problem for months but was determined it would not prevent his involvement in Euro 2020. Three substitute appearances so far amount to just 58 minutes of action.

Rashford will see a consultant once England’s participation is over and, asked how long he could be out, he replied: ‘I never bothered to ask the question. I’m fully concentrated on here. When the tournament is finished I’ll ask the question. I’m not 100 per cent sure if I need it yet. I’ll just take it as it comes. I managed to get through the season with United. I think I had 36 goal involvements so I can’t look back and say “I should have taken time off to do this and do that’’. I just want to be available for every game.’
‘Germany are a top, top team but we can play against them. Over the last few years, we’ve improved against the big teams, we’ve got results. Before that, we were sometimes playing all right, but bigger teams were dominating us and the game would usually be one or two-nil to them. That was one thing Gareth wanted to change.

‘It was around the Nations League time (in 2018); we wanted to start pushing ourselves and trying to beat these big nations. Gradually we started to do it a few more times. We’ve definitely progressed in those terms. Like I said, I’m just looking forward to the next game.’

They all are. Rashford has played against Germany twice, both times as a substitute in his 44 England appearances, but is yet to experience a win or score against them.

There would no better place to change those statistics than in the capital in four days’ time.

‘I feel like we have to bring the best version of us and take that to the game,’ said Rashford, who will have no hesitation in taking a penalty if a shootout is required.

‘We want to win the England way — show some good football, work hard for each other and score and create goals.

‘When we have been at our best, it is when we have been both scoring goals and keeping clean sheets. I know it sounds basic — don’t concede and score goals — but that is what we are good at.

‘It is right that everyone (outside camp) is getting excited. We will be focused and hopefully be at our best.’

Gareth Southgate signs a new three-year England contract that could see him earn around £5m per year as he targets World Cup glory in Qatar after suffering heartbreak in the final of Euro 2020

* England boss Gareth Southgate has signed a new three-year deal with the FA
* The Three Lions manager saw his side qualify for the 2022 World Cup last week
* He has led England to at least the semi-finals of the last two major tournaments
* Southgate will want to go one step further in Qatar after the Euro 2020 final loss

Gareth Southgate has signed a new three-year contract as England manager that will take him beyond the next European Championships in the summer of 2024.

Southgate - the most successful England manager since World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey in 1966 - has been rewarded for his work taking the national team to the finals of Euro 2020 this summer.

The 51-year-old currently earns £3million a year but his deal includes a significant increase on that figure. It is thought he will now earn in the region of £5m a year if performance bonuses are met.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this month that Southgate had agreed a deal in principle and that it would be announced once qualification for next winter's World Cup in Qatar had been secured.

England manager Gareth Southgate has signed a new three-year contract with the FA. The Three Lions manager saw his side qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar last week

This contract will see Southgate and his assistant Steve Holland - who has also signed a new deal - take the team to Qatar and then into the European Championship in Germany that follow in the summer of 2024.

On Monday Southgate said: 'I am delighted that Steve and I have been able to increase our stay in our respective roles.

'It remains an incredible privilege to lead this team. We have a great opportunity in front of us.'

Southgate originally took charge of the England team in a temporary capacity after Sam Allardyce left the post after just one game in September 2016. He then signed a contract to do the job full-time two months later.

In his five years as coach Southgate has taken England to the World Cup semi-final in Russia in 2018 and to July's Euros final against Italy at Wembley.

He also led England to the finals of the inaugural Nations League in summer 2019.

Asked how he would feel if he went to the end of his new deal, and serve as long as greats such as Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey, Southgate said: 'I think that England has been a massive part of my life, supporter, player, under-21 manager and now manager and the people you're talking about, I've always been aware of the history.

Southgate will want to go one step further in Qatar after the Euro 2020 final loss this summer

'The tournaments and big matches are what inspired me as a kid and to be able to connect people to that has been very, very special and the team can still improve, want to improve.'

Asked if his team would reach its peak under his charge, he added: 'I think what you hope, you want sustained success and when you look at the top nations who've won over years and years, Germany, Italy, France... they have odd fallow years but are generally contending for major tournaments.

'We have to make sure the team constantly evolves. We are now in a group of teams we believe can genuinely challenge. Six, seven years ago we went with hope, but now we can be genuinely positive.

'We know expectation is higher but that's good, the team is better than they were three years ago.'

Asked if club management tempted him after seeing a number of domestic changes, Southgate said: 'We had already agreed (to stay before the international break), but the conversations with (The FA), we knew what we wanted to do. Sometimes people are looking what's next in life and their career, and don't live a fulfilling life where you are.

'When you've done work culturally and where they can challenge (for titles), you want to bring that to fruition. We've only won one World Cup but we have to believe that's possible, it's an aim we have as a team.

'To step away when we think the next few years could have been exciting, that could be difficult to live with. If this contract is the last, I will only be 53 at the end of it and I hope there'll be a lot of my life at the end of it!'

'Asked if it will be his last England deal, he said: 'We have only just agreed to stay. We are always thinking about what's next but we have only just agreed to stay! If we are in a position where it's my decision to make in three years, we'll be in a place where we've done a good job.'

Asked if he was tempted to not renew, he said: 'There was never a consideration I wouldn't go to Qatar.

'I wanted to be sure I was wholly committed beyond that. Tournaments take a lot out of you and the way it ended for us took a lot of emotion and energy, and we were so quickly back in World Cup qualifying and I wanted to allow myself that consideration.

'I didn't want it to be a case of me agreeing something with my mind somewhere else in 18 months. I've signed to the Euros and if the team carry on playing at the level we know they can, that's when we take the next decision. I wanted to make sure I wasn't rushing into a decision that further down the line I might regret.'

Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said: 'Gareth and Steve have built a really strong culture with the players and support team and are best placed to take this young team forward.

'The success comes with revised expectations. We used to celebrate qualifying, now we expect to reach the latter stages.

'People will ask how we can afford this, but I will say this is a performance-related rise. Gareth and Steve care about the organisation. We are delighted Gareth and Steve have chosen to continue.'

Gareth Southgate WON'T give Harry Maguire assurances over a spot in England's World Cup starting XI... with the Three Lions boss keen to harness 'competition for places' ahead of Qatar

* Harry Maguire was booed by some England fans in a 3-0 win over Ivory Coast
* Gareth Southgate backed the defender but cannot guarantee him a starting spot
* It would take an extraordinary change of heart to not put him in World Cup squad
* But Southgate will not yet offer assurances about the starting XI ahead of Qatar

Gareth Southgate has backed Harry Maguire - but fallen short of guaranteeing the embattled defender a place in his World Cup starting XI.

Maguire was booed by England fans during Tuesday's victory over Ivory Coast at Wembley, provoking a furious response from Southgate, who branded the fans' reaction an 'absolute joke'.

The Manchester United man's international team-mates rallied round him, with Harry Kane, Jordan Henderson, Jack Grealish and Declan Rice all condemning the treatment of Maguire.

The 29-year-old is said to be sanguine about the booing that overshadowed the match.

Maguire privately acknowledges that his performances at United must improve, is focused on recapturing his best form and believes he will be stronger for the experience.

Unless Southgate has an extraordinary change of heart or Maguire is ruled out through injury, he will be in England's squad for the World Cup this year.

But the England boss refused to offer Maguire any assurances over his place in the team.

Harry Maguire will not be given any assurances over a starting spot at the 2022 World Cup. The centre back was booed by England fans in a friendly win over Ivory Coast at Wembley. Gareth Southgate defended Maguire amid the boos but could not offer any assurances. Marc Guehi and Tyrone Mings are among those pushing Maguire for starting spot

When asked whether Maguire was certain of selection in Qatar, Southgate said: 'I'm not going to give any of them that because they've got competition for places.

'This week we've seen Marc Guehi play extremely well, Ben White play extremely well, Tyrone Mings' record of clean sheets is outstanding.

'Harry has been in our No 1 pairing through the tournaments and has my full backing and support. But equally I'm not going to say to anybody in the middle of March that they are a guaranteed starter in the World Cup team.

'That's not the environment I'm looking to create and not the competition we are going to need.'

Meanwhile, England new boy Kyle Walker-Peters hopes his versatility will keep him in Southgate's squad following his international breakthrough.

With Kyle Walker, Reece James, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier vying for the right back role, the Southampton full back faces an uphill struggle to make it to the World Cup. But he remains undeterred by the competition.

'I look at everyone I am competing with and I try to take things from their game,' said Walker-Peters. 'But ultimately I don't see it negatively - I just try to use it positively to benefit myself.

'The boss has spoken to me about (versatility). He's watched a lot of my games where I have played left back, so he's aware I can do it.

'You look at Trippier at the Euros and he played left back a few times. It's something the boss is definitely interested in.'
