Ed Woodward tries to appease fans by insisting Manchester United have spent more than any other top European club during the last three transfer windows

* Manchester United revealed debt increase of 133% to £474.1m on Wednesday
* Ed Woodward defended finances and bragged about spending more than rivals
* He said United have backed boss by spending 'over €200m since summer 2019'
* He picked on 'outliers' Chelsea and said United 'compare favourably' with rivals

anchester United chief Ed Woodward has attempted to appease fans by bragging that they have spent more than any of their European rivals over the last three transfer windows - despite a huge rise in debts amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The executive vice-chairman and hierarchy at Old Trafford have come under fire for their work in the transfer market in recent years, but Woodward was keen to praise their summer purchases.

Speaking upon the release of United's finances on Wednesday, in which it was revealed their debt has risen a massive 133 per cent to £474.1million, Woodward insisted that the club have fully backed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has bragged about Manchester United's recent spend. Woodward was insistent that Manchester United have backed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

'We are pleased with our recent additions to the first-team squad of Donny van de Beek and Alex Telles, two players we had been tracking as part of our recruitment process for a long period, and Edinson Cavani, a top striker who adds a new option to our forward line,' he said.

'We also welcome Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo, who will join in January, two exciting young prospects who have also been scouted extensively.

'Added to the arrival of Bruno Fernandes earlier this year, these recruits underscore our continued commitment to strengthening the squad and take our net investment in new players since summer 2019 to over €200m – more, I believe, than any other major European club over that time period.'

The coronavirus pandemic has decimated finances at most of Europe's top clubs this summer, and Woodward picked out Chelsea as the 'outlier' for spending so big while others shied away.

'At a club level, many of our peers were cautious, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus and PSG having a combined net spent of €9m; or a median net spend of €13m,' Woodward continued.

'Of course there were one or two outliers the other way, most notably Chelsea, who were making up for not being able to be active during their transfer ban in summer 2019.

'But one needs to look across multiple windows to gain a clearer perspective; and as I mentioned earlier our aggregate net investment over the last 3 transfer windows compares very favourably with our peers.

Finances continue to take hits with more games this season played behind closed doors

'The bottom line is we are investing and will continue to invest to back the manager.'

United's worrying financial results come just hours after the team secured a brilliant result on the pitch, beating last season's Champions League finalists PSG away from home.

The result, with both goals in the 2-1 win scored by Marcus Rashford, puts them in a strong position in a tough Champions League group.

Progression to the knockout stages is vital to Woodward and the club's finances as they look to balance the books in the latter stages of a tough 2020.

WOODWARD: FANS ARE CRUCIAL TO FABRIC OF GAME

Ed Woodward has told Manchester United fans that the past eight months has “reminded us all of just how crucial you are to the fabric of the game,” as he expressed optimism over the prospect of supporters returning to Old Trafford.

Addressing fan representatives as part of a recent Fans’ Forum on 20 November, executive vice-chairman Woodward echoed Sir Matt Busby’s famous quote, telling the meeting: “This game without fans is nothing”.

Although acknowledging that “further patience” was required as home games continue to be played behind closed doors due to government restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19, Woodward said: “We are optimistic that the situation will gradually improve as we head into 2021.

“There are positive indications on vaccines, and we are confident in our ability to host fans in a safe, socially distanced environment, once we get the go-ahead.”

Updating the Fans’ Forum on plans for the return of supporters, Woodward said that, while “public health must always come first,” football should be treated consistently with other sectors.

“We believe the risks associated with watching football in the outdoors at Old Trafford will be significantly less than in many other leisure settings and we will continue to work with fan groups to strongly make this case,” he said. “We trust our fans and know that they will maintain social distancing.”

The Fans’ Forum meeting was held before the UK government announced the go-ahead for the return of a limited number of fans in some areas of the country, but not yet in Greater Manchester, which remains subject to the highest level of COVID-19 restrictions. The minutes of the meeting were published today.

Reflecting on events on the field since the last Forum in April, Woodward highlighted the 14-game unbeaten run to seal third place in last season’s Premier League and great wins against PSG and RB Leipzig on our return to the Champions League this season.

“Of course, we recognise there’s more hard work ahead to achieve the consistency needed to win trophies. But we see positive signs on the pitch and the training ground that reinforce our belief in the progress being made by Ole, his coaching team and the players,” he said.

Woodward recalled how he had told the Forum last April that the club remained committed to strengthening the squad, while being disciplined on spending in light of the pandemic.

“I believe we’ve delivered on that, with the additions we made during the summer taking our total net-spending to over €200m since summer 2019 – more than any other major European club over that period,” he said. “We will continue to support Ole with a planned, long-term approach to recruitment, focused on the summer windows.”

Woodward also updated fans on discussions with the rest of the Premier League about the economic challenges caused by the pandemic.

“While our strong commercial business puts us in a more resilient position than many clubs, these remain exceptionally challenging times for everyone in football, and especially for clubs in the lower divisions.

“We have been pushing the rest of the Premier League to provide emergency assistance to the EFL on a no-strings-attached basis and we will also remain at the forefront of discussions about reforms to improve the long-term financial sustainability of the entire English football pyramid.

“A strong Premier League and a financially sustainable and robust pyramid are both crucial to the health of the national game and that’s the principle we will continue to pursue within the strategic review recently launched by the Premier League.”

Addressing speculation about changes to European club football, Woodward said the club was at the centre of discussions about strengthening existing UEFA club competitions in ways that would have “little or no impact on the Premier League”.

“We believe that any changes to European competition post-2024 must be complementary to thriving domestic leagues,” he said.

Default Re: Ed Woodward

A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE FROM ED WOODWARD

Ed Woodward has praised the progress made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his players in the past year, as the Reds head into 2021 competing strongly in the Premier League and with three cups to pursue.

In a New Year message in the matchday programme for tomorrow’s visit of Aston Villa, the Executive Vice-Chairman said the team’s positive form, winning eight and drawing two of our last 10 domestic games, had “lifted spirits” amid the ongoing pandemic.

Woodward said the team “has coped well in challenging circumstances” without fans in stadiums, noting that we have won more points-per-game than any other Premier League club since games resumed behind closed doors in June. He also pointed to the improvement over last season, with nine more points, four more wins and eight more goals than at the same stage in 2019/20.

“There are many positive statistics like these showing the progress made under Ole in the past year,” he wrote. “But they tell only part of the story. Just as important is the work we see being done behind the scenes to build a winning culture consistent with the club’s traditions of attacking football played by youthful, hard-working teams fusing homegrown talent with top-class recruits.

“We are getting closer to those objectives as the squad continues to develop following the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Alex Telles and Edinson Cavani.

“Our ongoing investment reflects the tremendous resilience of the club and our commitment to supporting Ole, while remaining disciplined at an extremely challenging time.

“As always, our priority is to win trophies and, with the team going into the new year competing on four fronts, we are optimistic about the path ahead in 2021.”

Woodward acknowledged that, while football has been “a welcome distraction” over the past year, these “remain extremely challenging times for societies across the globe”.

“Many of our fans have been personally affected by Covid-19 and we send our sincere condolences to everyone who has lost loved ones,” he said. “Many others are on the frontline of the pandemic, whether working in healthcare or keeping our communities going, and all of you have our deepest respect and gratitude.

“We know that the social and economic fallout is severe and that’s why we have stepped up our own community response through the fantastic work of Manchester United Foundation. This includes the provision of 80,000 meals for vulnerable children during the Christmas holidays in partnership with FareShare Greater Manchester, complementing the wider campaign against child food poverty so inspirationally led by Marcus Rashford.

“Marcus’s efforts have demonstrated the power of football to be a force for good and we are tremendously proud of him.”

Woodward said that, while this remained a difficult winter in the short-term, the medium and longer-term outlook was getting brighter as vaccines arrive to fight the virus.

“One of the many benefits from this should be the gradual return of fans to football stadiums and we can’t wait for ours to be allowed back inside Old Trafford.”

Signing off his column, Woodward thanked fans for their loyal support throughout 2020 and offered best wishes for a happy and healthy new year.

Ed Woodward RESIGNS from his role as Manchester United executive vice-chairman and becomes first boardroom victim of huge backlash to European Super League - after playing a key role in trying to set it up

* Ed Woodward will leave Manchester United after backlash over the ESL plot
* United were one of 12 clubs to sign up to the European Super League
* However, widespread criticism has seen all English clubs withdraw from plans
* Woodward, a divisive figure among fans, will leave his post at the end of the year

Ed Woodward, the Manchester United chief, became the first victim of the collapsed European Super League on Tuesday night as it emerged he is to quit Old Trafford.

Club sources said that Woodward was planning to leave at the end of the year anyway — and is set to remain until then — but the announcement had been brought forward to avoid leaks.

However, it is hard to see how Woodward's departure is not linked to the despised European Super League which began to crumble on Tuesday when Manchester City and Chelsea initiated moves to pull out of the venture, before all six English clubs confirmed their intention to stay away.

Woodward was a key figure in fiercely controversial plans for the new breakaway league, with his links to US investment bank JP Morgan helping to secure the £4.3billion in financing.

Ed Woodward has resigned from his position as executive vice-chairman at Manchester United. The United chief was partly behind the plot to create the controversial European Super League

Confirming his decision on Tuesday night, Woodward said: 'I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world's greatest football club for the past 16 years.

'The club is well positioned for the future and it will be difficult to walk away at the end of the year.

'I will treasure the memories from my time at Old Trafford, during a period when we won the Europa League, the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. I am proud of the regeneration of the club's culture and our return to the Manchester United way of playing.

'We have invested more than £1bn in the squad during my time here and I am particularly delighted with the progress the players have made under the astute leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his coaching team in the last two years.

'I am sure that with the changes we have made on-field and to the coaching and football staff in recent years, this great club will soon be lifting silverware again. It deserves to.

'I desperately wanted the club to win the Premier League during my tenure and I am certain that the foundations are in place for us to win it back for our passionate fans.'

United stars held a Zoom call with Woodward to express their discomfort with the bold plot

Woodward leaves United after eight years at the helm and 16 years after he first became involved as part of the £790million takeover at Old Trafford by the Glazer family in 2005.

He has been credited with overseeing a 500 per cent growth in commercial revenue from £47m in 2005 to £279m in 2020, but also criticised for opening up the United brand to 'noodle sponsorships' around the globe.

Woodward has been held responsible by supporters for United winning only three trophies during his time in charge, and his Cheshire home was targeted by an angry mob in January 2020.

It is understood that the 49-year-old's agreement with the American owners — and co-chairman Joel Glazer in particular — is said to be amicable.

Woodward informed his staff of the decision on Tuesday and was said to be 'pretty emotional' about ending his association with the club.

Sources said on Tuesday night that Woodward is '100 per cent staying until the end of the season' but wants a break after so long in charge of one of the world's biggest sports clubs and there was high potential for the news to leak out before the end of the year.

Woodward was due to travel from London to Manchester for meetings on Thursday but it remains to be seen if that is still the case following Tuesday night's news and the dramatic collapse of the Super League project.

The United chief held an emergency video conference call with the players from his Mayfair office on Monday after news of the venture broke over the weekend.

As Sportsmail revealed, captain Harry Maguire challenged Woodward and was not the only player to voice his displeasure, with others in the dressing room following suit.

Some had raised the prospect of refusing to play in the ESL should the club take part, and Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw subsequently posted their opposition to the project on social media.

Woodward helped the Glazers purchase the club, and the Americans were a driving force behind the European Super League alongside Liverpool and Arsenal's owners

The announcement of Woodward's departure signals the end of a turbulent spell in charge of the club following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

United were criticised for allowing the legendary manager and long-serving chief executive David Gill to go at the same time, leaving Woodward to work with Ferguson's anointed successor David Moyes.

Woodward sacked Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho before installing Solskjaer.

He was also responsible for breaking United's transfer record to sign Paul Pogba for £89m and making Maguire the most expensive defender in the world at £80m, while also signing the likes of Angel Di Maria, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Radamel Falcao, Fernandes and Edinson Cavani.

He oversaw an overhaul of the infrastructure at United, most recently appointing John Murtough as football director and Darren Fletcher as technical director.

But now United must look for a man to replace Woodward himself.

Ed Woodward may have paid the price at Manchester United after standing down following European Super League debacle - but despite increased fan hatred of the Glazers, the Red Devils' profit driven American owners are going NOWHERE

* Ed Woodward resigned after his role in guiding Manchester United towards ESL
* But United fans will be frustrated if they are hoping for a departure of the Glazers
* The American owners have been hated by fans since taking over in 2005
* But despite the ESL debacle, they are showing no signs of selling the Red Devils

The television crews were back outside Ed Woodward’s house in London on Wednesday. Not in Washington DC or New Orleans, home to Manchester United’s co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer.

As the fallout from the grotesque European Super League rained down on the six English clubs involved, Woodward was the one putting on a tin hat at United, having already announced he will stand down as executive vice-chairman at the end of the year.

Many will argue Woodward deserves the flak. He was a key figure in the failed breakaway league and one of the ‘snakes’ called out by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

Ed Woodward has announced he will step down as executive vice-chairman at Old Trafford. His resignation comes following furious protests over United's proposed involvement in the now doomed European Super League

But he was not alone in plotting United’s role in the ESL, which would have seen Joel Glazer installed as vice-chairman. The 49-year-old has only ever been a front man for the owners.

News of Woodward’s imminent departure won’t get the Glazers off the hook, though that is unlikely to worry the secretive American billionaires who have never cared much for public opinion.

Not when they were chased out of Old Trafford by angry fans at the height of the £790million takeover in June 2005, hiding in the back of police vans.

Not when the green and gold campaign was launched to force them out in 2010. And not when they continue to face criticism for taking dividends out of the club — £23.2m in the last financial year — while saddling United with a debt of £466m. Profit not popularity is what drives the Glazers.

But Avram (left) and Joel Glazer will continue to lead Untied as the club's owners. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has called the Glazers 'scavengers' who needed 'booting' out of Old Trafford

United’s former chief executive David Gill had a green and gold flag draped over the gates of his family home in 2010 by unwanted visitors professing to ‘Love United Hate Glazer’.

Woodward put his Cheshire residence up for sale after fans attacked it in January last year. The incident affected him more than people realise, and the events of the past few days — in particular the activity around the new family home — played a part in his decision to bring forward the announcement that he was stepping down.

Yet the Glazers carry on in splendid isolation thousands of miles away. They never give interviews, we were told by the US media when the owners of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took over United 16 years ago, and the reporters were right. They rarely even speak in public. Joel Glazer’s comments in the ESL statement on Sunday and Wednesday's public apology were an exception, providing proof that the Glazer fingerprints were all over this plot.

Gary Neville branded them scavengers this week. ‘They need booting out of this football club and they need booting out of this country,’ fumed the former United defender.

Duncan Drasdo of the Manchester United Supporters Trust, which still has Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as one of its patrons, was not surprised by the Glazers’ role in the power grab.

‘We feared this day was coming ever since the takeover,’ said Drasdo. ‘They don’t care about betraying the history of the club or the fans.’

It is unlikely the backlash will make the Glazers consider selling United. When that day comes, they will act from a position of strength, not when the share price has just dropped after one of the most shameful episodes in the club’s history.

United fans launched a green and gold protest movement in 2010 to try and force a Glazer sale. United fans have long been unhappy under Glazer ownership since their arrival in 16 years ago

Avram Glazer may have sold a £70m stake last month, reducing the family’s ownership from 78 per cent to 74.9 per cent, but the valuable Class B shares converted to Class A shares after the sale.

Only Class B shares carry voting rights. The Glazers may sell off chunks of United, but they will make damn sure they cling to power. That won’t change.

The ESL may have been consigned to history already but don’t expect the Americans to be gone any time soon.

ED WOODWARD EXCITED ABOUT SEASON AHEAD

Ed Woodward has hailed Manchester United’s resilience through the global pandemic and expressed his excitement about the season ahead following this summer’s recruitment of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

The executive vice-chairman praised the “amazing atmosphere” created by the return of fans to Old Trafford and said he was “more confident than ever that we are on the right track” on the pitch.

Speaking after the release of the club’s full-year financial results, Woodward described the past 12 months as “among the most challenging in the history of Manchester United” because of the pandemic and said “everyone associated with the club can be proud of the resilience we have shown through these most testing of times”.

“We said during the depths of the pandemic that the club would emerge in a stronger relative position, and I believe we are now seeing that borne out as we build towards recovery from a very solid foundation,” he said.

“The most important part of this recovery is the return of fans to Old Trafford and it has been fantastic to see and hear the stadium full for the first time in almost 18 months. The amazing atmosphere during the opening home games of the season demonstrates that fans are the lifeblood of the game, and we’re so glad to have them back.”

As the team prepares to visit West Ham on Sunday, Woodward praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the players for their strong start to the Premier League season and said “everyone at the club is feeling excited about the rest of the campaign”.

“We significantly strengthened the squad over the summer, with the addition of Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton. These signings have demonstrated our continued ability to attract some of the world’s best footballers to Old Trafford, and our firm commitment to helping Ole deliver success on the pitch.

“We have been clear in our strategy to build a squad with a blend of top-class recruits and homegrown talent, comprising a balance of youth and experience, with the aim of winning trophies and playing attacking football the Manchester United way.

“As part of this, we have continued to strengthen our recruitment and scouting processes, and we have also increased our investment in the Academy, to ensure that this success is sustainable. While squad-building is a constant process, we are more confident than ever that we are on the right track.”

Woodward also highlighted the strong start to the season made by our women’s team, with two wins in the first two games of their Women’s Super League campaign under new Head Coach Marc Skinner.

“We are firmly committed to continuing to build our presence in the women’s game,” he added.

While our financial results were impacted by the pandemic, Woodward said we coped with the disruption better than many clubs because of the strength of our business model.

“It is not an accident that we have been able to invest this summer at a time when many clubs have been retrenching. This reflects the strong commercial model we have built over many years, ensuring that our spending is always underpinned by revenues that we generate ourselves,” he said.

“However, while we are confident in our relative strength, it remains clear that football as a whole faces major financial challenges caused by years of material inflation in wages and transfer fees, exacerbated by the impact of the pandemic. We are committed to working within the Premier League, the ECA and UEFA to promote greater financial sustainability at all levels of the game.”

The long-term outlook for football was bright, said Woodward, as global interest in the game continues to increase.

“But no club can succeed on its own. We want to be part of healthy, vibrant domestic and European football pyramids, working together with our governing bodies and, most importantly, the fans, to preserve and enhance the magic of our game. As a club, we are committed to those objectives and we look forward to pursuing them in the months and years ahead.”

Default Re: Ed Woodward

Ed Woodward is in talks to take on a consultancy role at Manchester United when his eight-year tenure as club chief ends next month - in blow to section of support who blame him for struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson left

* Ed Woodward is leaving his role at Manchester United at the end of the year
* Woodward has been the executive vice-chairman at Old Trafford for eight years
* However, he could return to the club in a consultancy role when called upon
* Woodward has come in for severe criticism for his role in the club's struggles

Ed Woodward is in talks over taking a consultancy role at Manchester United following his departure.

Sportsmail understands that discussions are ongoing over what would be a controversial move that would see the departing executive - set to leave at the end of next month - retain some form of influence at the turmoiled club.

Such a development may not go down well with sections of United's support, who blame Woodward for United's struggles since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Since then, the fallen giants have failed to win a Premier League title and have slipped behind the likes of rivals City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

Ed Woodward could remain on Manchester United's payroll - this time in a consultancy role. Woodward is due to leave as executive vice chairman next month but could find another role. He has been blamed by a lot of United fans as the reason for their struggles over the years

Saturday's 2-0 derby humbling, which followed a 5-0 thumping at the hands of Liverpool on their last outing at an increasingly restless Old Trafford left under-pressure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men nine points behind leaders Chelsea in sixth - and level on points with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Woodward has come in for severe criticism for his role in the club's struggles and should the executive vice chairman remain in the fold, albeit in a limited capacity, it could be viewed as a controversial move by the owners, the Glazer family.

Richard Arnold (left) has been strongly linked with succeeding him as executive vice chairman

Insiders say it is commonplace when chief executives leave a company to strike an agreement which allows the firm to call upon their knowledge if required. Should Woodward take a role, it is likely that it would be on that basis, rather than a position that would see him working extensively at the club on an ongoing basis.

Woodward played a key role in the Glazer's leveraged buyout in 2005 and has been in his current role since 2012.

A successor is yet to be named although current managing director and Woodward ally Richard Arnold has been strongly linked with the post.

Default Re: Ed Woodward

Departing Manchester United vice-chairman Ed Woodward comes out in support of boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and says the board is 'determined' to deliver success with the under-pressure Norwegian in charge

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finds himself under major pressure at Manchester United
* The United boss has been questioned after defeats by Liverpool and Man City
* Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has delivered his backing to Solskjaer
* He reiterated the club are focused on bringing success with Solskjaer in charge

Ed Woodward has insisted Manchester United remain 'determined' to deliver success with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite the club's start to the season piling pressure on their beleaguered manager.

United face Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday after mustering just four points from the past 18 available and being humiliated by fierce rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

The standard of performances from a richly assembled squad has left serious questions about Solskjaer's suitability to remain in charge.

As Sportsmail revealed, the Old Trafford hierarchy are desperate to get through the season with Solskjaer and have so far ignored calls for change despite links with Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane.

But Solskjaer was also left under no illusions about his responsibilities as outgoing executive vice-chairman Woodward delivered a carefully worded statement in relation to their latest financial results.

'While these financial results today demonstrate our resilience through the pandemic, our top priority is success on the pitch,' Woodward said on Wednesday.

'The manager, players and everyone at the club are determined to achieve that objective.'

United announced that revenues had increased by 16 per cent to £126.5million for the three months to September 30 thanks to the return of full crowds at Old Trafford in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward (left) has given his backing to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. United look off the pace in the title race but executive vice-chairman Woodward said the board are determined to kick on and 'deliver' success with the under-fire Norwegian boss in charge. Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has been linked but United's hierarchy are backing Solskjaer. Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane have been mooted as successor options

Notably, underlining their investment in Solskjaer's squad, the club's wage bill had increased by almost a quarter in the wake of signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton in the summer.

Those four have added almost £1.3m a week to the wage bill, though the cost has yet to be reflected in results on the pitch.

Wages for the three months to September 30 had mushroomed to £88.5m, a £16.6m - or 23.1 per cent - increase on the prior year-quarter.

Ronaldo accounted for the majority of that rise given that United made him the highest-paid player in Premier League history when they signed him from Juventus in August.

Ronaldo's impact was felt in other ways with retail and merchandising up a fifth to £28.1m, although his signing only came in the final month of the quarter.

Matchday revenue increased more than 1,000 per cent to £18.8m following the return of full crowds and commercial income jumped nearly eight per cent to £64.4m for the quarter.

United made a profit of £17.4m following the sale of Wales forward Daniel James to Leeds and a sell-on clause on Romelu Lukaku, who joined Chelsea from Inter Milan, compared to a £12.6m loss in the prior year quarter.

The club's net debt stood at £439.7m on September 30, down slightly from £440.6m the previous year.

Meanwhile, Roma remain keen to sign Diogo Dalot on a permanent deal in January.

The Portuguese full-back has remained on the periphery of Solskjaer's squad this season and is eager for more game time.

United will not let him leave without finding a suitable replacement and maintain interest in Kieran Trippier at Atletico Madrid and Max Aarons of Norwich City.

Trippier is currently facing eight weeks out after suffering a 'grade three sprain of his left shoulder'.
