Ole Gunnar Solskjaer backs Harry Maguire to 'bounce back' from early-season troubles for Man United and England... but says his captain may not play in Saturday's trip to Newcastle

* Harry Maguire was sent off during England's 1-0 defeat by Denmark this week
* It continued a poor start to the season for the Manchester United captain
* His manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed the defender to recover his form
* But Maguire may not be fit enough to play for United at Newcastle on Saturday

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Harry Maguire won’t hide from criticism and wants to play for Manchester United at Newcastle on Saturday - if he is fit.

The beleaguered United captain picked up a knock before he was sent off in England’s defeat by Denmark on Wednesday and is being assessed ahead of the clash at St James’ Park.

Maguire’s red card at Wembley followed his arrest on holiday in Greece in August and a series of errors that have contributed to United losing two of their first three Premier League games.

Solskjaer confirmed the Sportsmail story from Friday that Maguire doesn’t want to be taken out of the firing line - and said he has never considered dropping his under-fire skipper.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Maguire would benefit from a break, but Solskjaer backed the 27-year-old to recover from his alarming slump in form.

‘He’s adamant he’s ready to play,’ said the United manager. ‘He doesn’t want to hide behind a red card or a bad performance — he wants to go out there and prove himself. I don’t doubt his resilience in that respect. He’s very professional so he wants to put himself up for selection.

‘Then it’s up to me and if I want to take him out of the firing line. I haven’t considered that without him coming to knock on my door. I speak to him regularly and he’s been very positive.

‘You speak to individuals. You sit down and look them in the eye and see where we go from here.

‘Harry is a leader, he’s a captain for us and it is still early on in the season. He missed the first internationals, he’s not had the pre-season he had last season, but I’m sure he’ll bounce back.

Little has gone right for Manchester United's captain during the early part of the season. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Maguire to 'bounce back' from his troubles

‘He’s got great resilience and great personality. I know he wants to work his way out of the last couple of games when he’s been criticised. I just hope he can play because he picked up that knock just before the red card. I’m not sure if he’s going to be available yet.’

Maguire's problems have been the focal point of a poor start to the season for United who have lost two of their opening three Premier League games – including a crushing 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham last time out.

Solskjaer revealed that he has been in touch with his players on international duty and challenged them to bounce back at Newcastle.

'We know we've started the season badly and that game (Tottenham) ended really badly,' he said. 'We've now had two weeks to think about it, work on it with the others who were here, and the ones on internationals had positive and negative experiences.

'We've been in touch with the ones that have been away. It's one of those things you have to get over as soon as you can.

'We know any little chance from the outside wants to create division. Bruno Fernandes spoke well the other day. We are united and have to stay together, we can't listen to everyone outside.

'Bruno has lost two league games and he came here in February. It's been two in quick succession, he's not used to losing league games but welcome to Man United, this is what happens.

'They are going to try and create a division between us but it's not going to happen. This is a group that wants to work together and stick together.'

On Newcastle, he added: 'We need a response as we always do after we lose a game. You want to win the next one.

'We want to try and dominate the game. The result is very important, but we want to see positive body language and mindset. You don't get anywhere being negative. Go out there go for the win and see players who want to work for the points.'

'Very good performance, a good goal and he led by example': Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praises Harry Maguire after his strong display in victory at Newcastle

* Maguire capped a fine individual performance with a goal in 4-1 win
* He put a difficult spell behind him with a commanding display at Newcastle
* Boss Solskjaer was delighted with the fluency on display on Saturday night

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Harry Maguire after he put a difficult spell behind him with a commanding display in victory at Newcastle.

The England defender, who played in the chaotic 6-1 Premier League defeat by Tottenham last time out before being sent off for England against Denmark on Wednesday evening, went some of the way towards answering his critics, capping a fine individual performance with a goal in a 4-1 win at St James' Park.

Solskjaer said: 'It's the way to respond to a couple of disappointing performances.

Harry Maguire capped a fine individual performance with a goal in a 4-1 win at St James' Park

'We lost 6-1, but he was part of the team that beat the world ranked number one, Belgium, then he gets sent off and now he's up again with that win with a very, very good performance, a good goal, could have had one or two more, led the team by example.

'He was inspirational as well the build-up to the game and of course, I'm very pleased for him.'

United had got off to the worst possible start when Luke Shaw turned Emil Krafth's second-minute cross into his own net, but they levelled through Maguire's 23rd-minute header.

They left it late to clinch victory, scoring three times after the 86th minute with Bruno Fernandes, who had seen a 58th-minute penalty saved by Karl Darlow, putting them ahead with a cultured finish from Marcus Rashford's clever back-heeled pass before Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford himself both struck in stoppage time.

Maguire put a difficult spell behind him with a commanding display in victory at Newcastle. Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was delighted with the fluency on display

Asked about his team's response to the early setback, Solskjaer said: 'Of course it made it a lot harder. It was hard enough with the build-up to this game.

'The result from last time of course and 1-0 down after a minute-and-a-half doesn't make it easier, so I thought the boys responded fantastically.

'They were patient, resilient, they trusted what the plan was and in the end, we created enough chances to grind out the win.'

Fernandes' goal was a picture-book affair launched by substitute Donny Van De Beek inside his own half, and Solskjaer was delighted with the fluency on display.

He said: 'It was great timing, very good interchange of passing and the timing of Bruno's run and Marcus' lay-off were perfect and he found that top corner.

'He's a determined boy and after missing the penalty, he wanted to make up for it.'

Newcastle head coach Steve Bruce admitted his side had been 'naive' at the death after sensing a chance to win the game with David De Gea having pulled off a superb save to prevent Callum Wilson from giving them a second-half lead.

Bruce said: 'We had a big chance - Callum had a great chance and De Gea pulls off a wonder-save.

'I know Karl (Darlow) made some terrific saves, but De Gea has come up with a really, really top save, and it might have been a bit different.

'The disappointment was to be beaten by four at the end. We were a bit naive towards the end. We left wide-open spaces behind us and we know with Rashford in particular, if you do that against top, top players like him, then it becomes very difficult.'

'Maybe we were patting each other on the back': Harry Maguire admits complacency may have crept into Manchester United's side for Arsenal defeat after they thrashed RB Leipzig

* Manchester United lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday
* Captain Harry Maguire has admitted that United lacked creativity in their defeat
* United beat Leipzig 5-0 in the Champions League but their home form is dismal
* Maguire claimed he was not worried despite identifying a lack of concentration

anchester United captain Harry Maguire has blamed a lack of concentration and focus for his side's lacklustre Premier League defeat at home to Arsenal on Sunday.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's 69th-minute penalty extended United's dismal start to the season at home as they failed to build on their 5-0 win over Leipzig in the Champions League in midweek.

Frustrated Maguire told Sky Sports: 'It's hard to put a finger on it. It's disappointing from us - we didn't start the game well.

'We gave the ball away way too much in the first half. It was a cagey game of few chances.

'They had one or two more than us. We needed to create more.

'It worked so well in midweek... we were confident going in but it was important to start well and we didn't. It's not good enough.

Man United captain Harry Maguire claimed there were no excuses after the defeat to Arsenal. The 1-0 loss meant United have made their worst start to a league season at home for 48 years. Maguire warned that there were no excuses after United extended their streak at Old Trafford

'We can't find excuses. We weren't at it - the concentration was not there with clean passing.

'Maybe we were patting each other on the back, which shouldn't happen.

'I keep saying that you have to stay level headed.'

United had hoped their league form would follow suit after thrashing RB Leipzig and keeping a clean sheet at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

They are 15th after failing to win any of their opening four home matches in the league for the first time since 1972 and stretching their winless home run to six games.

Their only two goals against visiting teams have come in a dire 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace in their opening game and a stunning 6-1 mauling by Tottenham last month.

Maguire said: 'It's not a worry. It's disappointing.

'We have not won at Old Trafford this year. We want teams to have a tough time when they come here.

'Something has got to change. Today wasn't good enough. There's something not clicking right now at home.'

United are next at home in the league when they welcome promoted West Brom on November 21.

That means they will have gone almost five months since their last league win at Old Trafford, when they beat doomed Bournemouth 5-2 on July 4.

They face Manchester City in the derby on December 12 before finishing the year with visits from Leeds and Wolves.

'What I'm seeing is he could bring more to the team': Robin van Persie expects much better from captain Harry Maguire and reckons the Manchester United defender's distribution HAS to improve

* Robin van Persie revealed that he expects much more from Harry Maguire
* Van Persie says the Manchester United defender's distribution must improve
* Former United striker van Persie stressed that other players are also at fault

Robin van Persie has revealed that he expects much more from Manchester United captain Harry Maguire.

Maguire has been one of many United players to find matters difficult in the early stages of the campaign.

Former United striker van Persie stressed that Maguire's distribution needs to improve in order to help his side take a step forward.

Maguire has often been praised for the way in which he plays the ball out from the back, but van Persie says he has been unable to show those qualities.

Speaking on BT Sport, van Persie said: 'Everyone is talking about Maguire being fantastic on the ball, so far he’s not been fantastic on the ball going forward with his passing but that’s not only down to him.

'Overall, in some situations - the team is not well positioned. You see Fred coming to take on the ball from the centre-back places - he should not to do that, Maguire should do that - he should play in a zone higher up the pitch where it’s more difficult to play but it gives people more options to play.

'Forward players should play as high as possible. It’s not clicking because the positioning of the players is not right.'

Van Persie was eager to point out that the problems that United have aren't solely down to Maguire, with their whole team needing to step up.

United have found it difficult at times to orchestrate slick passing moves and there has been a lack of balance on some occasions.

Robin van Persie has revealed he expects much more from Manchester United's Harry Maguire. van Persie indicated that United captain Maguire's distribution needs to improve significantly. Van Persie stressed the problems for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side aren't just down to Maguire

Van Persie said: 'On the pitch what I’m seeing is that he could bring more to the team, defensively but especially on the ball because everyone was talking about great he is on the ball.

'It is not only down to him, you have to make space for each other. He should get options in midfield from the forward players. Do they give him enough options?

'Sometimes it does click, you could see the midfielders did find the forward players but it’s not consistent enough for the moment. You should always have your runs in behind, you should always have depth in your game and that’s not always the case.'

There have been some positive moments for United this season, including the win against Paris Saint-Germain and the 5-0 victory against RB Leipzig.

However, Solskjaer's team have found it difficult to maintain consistency and build up momentum.

'People don't want us to do well... probably because of the success we've had in the past': Harry Maguire claims criticism aimed at Manchester United stems from JEALOUSY at club's former glory

* Manchester United beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon
* The Red Devils were under big pressure heading into the Premier League clash
* Harry Maguire believes his team are the most talked about club in the world
* Defender says he and his team-mates must deal with the added scrutiny

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire believes criticism which is often so quickly levelled at the club is rooted in jealousy.

Some of the pressure which was building on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after two defeats in four days - including the Champions League embarrassment against Istanbul Basaksehir - was lifted with a 3-1 win at Everton.

Victory avoided the ignominy of United's worst start to a league season since 1989-90 and gave their manager some breathing space after coming under increasing scrutiny but three wins in seven league matches still leaves the club in the bottom half of the table.

Maguire admits it is sometimes difficult to ignore the criticism but felt the performance at Goodison Park gave them something to build on after the international break.

'At this club one thing I've noticed in my time here - I've been here a year and a half - is we are the most talked-about club in the world,' he said.

'Why? Because we are the biggest club in the world. People don't want us to do well. Why? Probably because of the success we've had in the past.

'We have to live up to that, we have to react to it and don't let the negatives get into our bubble inside the training ground. Sometimes it is difficult for the lads.'

Harry Maguire believes much of the criticism levelled at Man United is rooted in jealousy. Maguire was praised by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for his performance in the win at Everton

Speaking after the match in a video posted on Manchester United's Twitter feed the England international added: 'We reacted well to two poor results. We felt we were on the right track after Leipzig (a 5-0 win) and we let ourselves down against Arsenal (last Sunday).

'It wasn't good enough as a performance. In the week again we gave them a soft goal and found it too hard to create chances to come back.

'We knew this was an important game to get three points. We reacted well but it is only a start.'

Maguire is one of the players who has found himself on the end of criticism having so far failed to live up to his status as the world's most expensive defender following his £85million move from Leicester in the summer of 2019.

However, he was praised by Solskjaer for his performance in the win at Everton, which was achieved thanks to two goals from Bruno Fernandes who, in contrast, has had no problems in excelling since his January arrival from Sporting Lisbon.

'I thought Harry's performance was top against - for me - one of the best in the world at aerial play, (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin, with his timing in the air, his jump, his spring and his athleticism,' said the United boss.

'And I thought we as a backline defended really well against him. Very pleased with Harry and the rest of them back there.'

Frustrated Manchester United captain Harry Maguire admits slow start and defensive errors condemned them to Champions League exit by Leipzig: 'It wasn't good enough for the first 20 minutes... we failed to deal with crosses'

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side only needed a point to progress in Germany
* But the visitors conceded twice in a kamikaze opening 13 minutes at Leipzig
* Kluivert added a third before United pulled two goals back in late comeback
* RB Leipzig 3-2 Manchester United: Solskjaer's side OUT of Champions League

Harry Maguire questioned Manchester United’s mentality as they crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.

United went three goals down against RB Leipzig and, despite scoring twice during a late rally to set up a tense finish, were left counting the cost of defensive errors.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side only needed a point to progress in Germany but were dumped into the Europa League as a consequence of a kamikaze opening 13 minutes during which they conceded twice.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire insists the players must fare much better in future to reach the standards the club expects after crashing out of the Champions League

‘It wasn't good enough for the first 20 minutes. We weren't at it,’ Maguire admitted. ‘We had great belief, we came close (to equalising) at the end, but ultimately we have to stop giving goals away and falling behind. I don't want to look at excuses.

‘There are 11 bodies out there who have to do the basics of football. We started the game too slowly. We failed to deal with crosses and that is why we were beaten. We’ve got to do more.’

The United captain’s infuriation with a lack of application was mirrored by Solskjaer, who bemoaned defensive frailties.

Justin Kluivert scores Leipzig's third goal in the second-half following a mix-up between Maguire and goalkeeper David de Gea

The manager did, however, choose to praise the ultimately doomed comeback.

‘We didn't perform as a team and that's always the manager's responsibility - to get everyone ready,’ Solskjaer said.

‘We knew they'd come at us. unfortunately we conceded two goals. We never got going. We didn't turn up until they scored the second goal.

‘Maybe the referee should have done something for the second one with the push on Alex (Telles). Maybe we need to be more streetwise.

‘We started playing at 2-0. It was one-way traffic in the second half. They gave everything and showed very good character.’

It was the 10th time United have conceded the first goal in a match this season and Solskjaer was at a loss to explain another sluggish start.

‘We need to address it even more,’ he added. ‘We've spoken about it. We talked about what Leipzig would do, how we needed to manage it, and we didn't.’

Paul Pogba gave United impetus when introduced as a second-half substitute and the United boss would not be drawn on the player’s agent, Mino Raiola, claiming his time at Old Trafford is over.

‘You've got to ask Paul if he's happy,’ Solskjaer said. ‘I'm not speaking for him. As soon as Paul's agent realises this is a team sport and we work together, the better. The squad is fine, they are a team, they stick together.’
