Manchester United's newest wonderkid? Teenage defender Teden Mengi promoted to senior squad by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of the season restarting

* Teden Mengi was called up to Man United's first-team for training on Monday
* The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut but has impressed the boss so far
* Mengi sat on the bench for United's 2-1 defeat to Astana in the Europa League
* He also captained United's U18s to the FA Cup Youth Cup semi-finals last year

Teden Mengi is the latest Manchester United youth star to be promoted to the first team.

At just 18, the centre-back is yet to make his senior debut but did sit on the bench for United's 2-1 defeat by Astana in the Europa League in 2019.

The young starlet was pictured at training with the first team on Monday, having caught the eye of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of the Premier League return.

Having captained United's U18s to the FA Cup Youth Cup semi-finals and featuring regularly for an older age group in the U23s, Mengi is expected to become a breakthrough star, following the likes of Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood.

Teden Mengi was called up to Manchester United's first team for a training session on Monday. The 18-year-old is yet to make his senior debut but has impressed

Should Mengi be handed his debut in United's remaining 2019-20 campaign games, he could become the first player born in 2002 to play for the Red Devils.

Mengi would add to the pace of Solskjaer's side as he is said to have clocked up the fourth-fastest running speed in the club.

Only Jesse Lingard, Axel Tuanzebe and Daniel James have a faster pace than the teenager.

Under 23s boss Neil Wood believes that Mengi can replicate Brandon Williams's trajectory to the first team.

‘Teden has been fantastic,’ Wood told MEN Sport.

‘He came up to us quite early on in the season and, a bit like Brandon in a sense, he came from the 18s and took his chance. He played really well and he kept his place in the team.

‘And when he dropped back down at the end of the season to lead the Youth Cup team, he put in some excellent performances there. We'll be looking to work with him next season and he's one [player] we want to “do a Brandon” with, push him on and the goal is to try and get him pushed up into that first team if we can.’

Solskjaer’s side are back at training in preparation for their first match after the coronavirus shutdown.

United are set to face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham in north London on June 19 - a crunch match in the race for the top four.

United were in good form prior to the league suspension, 11 games unbeaten in all competitions while Spurs will hope the return of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min will help them claim the three points.

UNITED ISSUE UPDATE ON ACADEMY SQUADS

At this time of year, Academy players’ contracts are set to expire at Manchester United, as the squads start to take shape in advance of the 2020/21 season.

While some will inevitably move on, the Under-23s welcome the older members of the Academy group, who step up to Premier League 2 football. An intake of first-year scholars then replaces them in the Under-18s.
Throughout the period of lockdown, the Academy has continued to place the well-being of its players at the forefront of all activities. Therefore, the decision was made to further increase the extensive level of care that is provided to the club’s departing young professionals.

All outgoing players have been offered a package of support which includes the option to return to the Aon Training Complex for pre-season, in order to maintain fitness ahead of the next stage of their careers.
Discussions between parents, coaches and players took place significantly ahead of the curtailment of the Academy games programme. United have since began to organise trials at new clubs wherever possible and will continue to provide each individual with comprehensive support throughout the process.

The decision has also been made that, given the missed opportunities at the end of the 2019/20 season, every player below the age of 18 will continue with United into the next campaign. In total, 202 boys have been retained and the Academy looks forward to welcoming them back to training when it is appropriate to do so.

The following players from this season’s Under-23 squad remain under professional contract with the club:

Di’Shon Bernard
Luca Ercolani
Ethan Galbraith
Matej Kovar
Ethan Laird
Dylan Levitt
D’Mani Mellor
Arnau Puigmal
Max Taylor
Aliou Traore
Paul Woolston

The following players from this season’s Under-18 squad remain either under professional contract or continue their scholarships with the club:

Lukasz Bejger
Jacob Carney
Oliver Denham
Reece Devine
Owen Dodgson
Anthony Elanga
Noam Emeran
William Fish
Calen Gallagher-Allison
Johan Guadagno
Bjorn Hardley
Max Haygarth
Mark Helm
Ben Hockenhull
Dillon Hoogewerf
Iestyn Hughes
Zidane Iqbal
Ondrej Mastny
Charlie McCann
Dermot Mee
Hannibal Mejbri
Mateo Mejia
Teden Mengi
Harvey Neville
Charlie Savage
Ayodeji Sotona
Connor Stanley
Martin Svidersky
Charlie Wellens

The following players will leave the club following the expiry of their contracts:

Aidan Barlow
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson
Alex Fojticek
Ethan Hamilton
Dion McGhee
Demetri Mitchell
Kieran O’Hara
Largie Ramazani
George Tanner

Manchester United would like to thank the departing players for their contributions during their time at the club and wish them the very best of luck for the future.

A further announcement will be made in due course regarding the intake of first-year scholars for the Under-18s squad in 2020/21.

Manchester United's newest wonderkid Ethan Laird will be promoted to senior squad by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as full back follows in the footsteps of Marcus Rashford

* Ethan Laird has been called up to Manchester United's first team
* The 18-year-old impressed the boss during his time playing for the Under-23s
* Laird will follow in Marcus Rashford's footsteps by coming through academy

Ethan Laird will be the latest Manchester United youth star to be promoted to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first team.

At just 18, the right-back will follow in the footsteps of former academy products like Marcus Rashford to graduate to the first team.

The young starlet impressed for United's Under-23s side after returning from injury at the start of the season and has evidently caught the eye of Solskjaer.

The Norwegian manager is committed to developing his youngsters, as seen with Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Rashford, and is prepared to give Laird a chance to make the step up.

Solskjaer said that Laird would likely join other academy players James Garner, Angel Gomes and Teden Mengi in joining in in first team training following his side's 2-1 FA Cup win over Norwich on the weekend.

Solskjaer said: 'They keep on working every single day. Jimmy [Garner] is training with us, Ethan [Laird] will probably come in with the group, Teden [Mengi] has been there.

'Tahith [Chong] and Angel [Gomes] have been working hard behind the scenes. Hopefully, they keep on developing and get an opportunity, and I'm sure they'll take it.'

According to The Sun, Laird's opportunity to train alongside Old Trafford stars Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes will come next week as he looks to get a taste of first-time action before the season finishes.

The youngster, who turns 19 in August, will provide some competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.

'Today I have to say goodbye': Marc Jurado pens emotional letter to thank Barcelona as he confirms he is leaving ahead of expected summer switch to Manchester United's academy

* Marc Jurado has come through Barcelona's La Masia academy but is now leaving
* He is set to join Manchester United in coming weeks after turning down new deal
* Jurado has now confirmed his exit with an emotional letter thanking the club
* He will play for United's Under 18s side initially before plotting route to first-team

Marc Jurado has penned an emotional goodbye letter to Barcelona ahead of his expected summer switch to Manchester United's academy.

The 16-year-old right back has been in the La Masia set-up at Barcelona for his entire footballing journey, but is now set to head to Old Trafford in the coming months.

Jurado turned 16 in April but turned down the offer of a contract extension at Barca in order to secure a switch to Manchester United, which was first reported in May.

Marc Jurado was regarded as one of the outstanding talents of his age group at La Masia

He has now confirmed his exit as is set to join Manchester United in the coming months

Although the deal has not been confirmed by either club, it is expected to go ahead in the coming weeks, and now Jurado has announced his Barcelona exit.

'It is never easy to leave the team that has given you everything,' he wrote. 'FC Barcelona has been my second home, my second family, where I have trained as a player but also as a person.

'Today I have to say goodbye but not before thanking each of the people who have helped me since I started in 2011. I have been fortunate to share my passion with a fantastic generation with whom I will always be linked.

'We started as children who only wanted to run after the ball and I said goodbye, nine years later, being able to call them friends. Only we know the immense luck we have had with all the coaches who have trained us and helped us to continue fulfilling our dreams.

Jurado, a talented right-back, turned down the offer of a Barcelona contract to join United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be keen to monitor Jurado's progress when he is in the Under-18 side

'Every stage has a beginning and an end. Mine, after much reflection with my family, has arrived. Gone are indelible memories that will always accompany me.'

The teenage defender has been playing for the club's Cadet A side this season and was due to be promoted to the Juvenil B team for the following campaign.

Jurado is just the latest in a long line of La Masia talents that they have lost in the past few years, with fewer stars breaking through to the first team.

Ansu Fati and Riqui Puig are two success stories over the last couple of years, but there have been a disappointing amount of exits.

Jurado's exit is set to net the club around £1.3m, with Manchester United only needing to pay a small compensation fee given the player's age.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plans to 'add one or two youngsters' to Manchester United first-team squad from the academy next season after 18-year-olds Teden Mengi and Ethan Laird impressed him

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has put huge stock in promoting talented youth prospects
* This season Brandon Williams and Mason Greenwood have starred for first team
* Next term the manager is keen to add a couple more prospects to his squad

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to maintain the conveyor belt of young talent to the Manchester United first team and plans to add 'one or two more' from the academy next season.

Solskjaer has placed great importance in bringing through teenagers from the academy set-up to his senior squad and wants to continue the pathway.

Mason Greenwood, the 18-year-old striker, has been a revelation and Brandon Williams, 19, has also garnered valuable experience at left-back.

Ethan Laird (right) is one of the latest academy starlets to be put in the first-team squad

The likes of Tahith Chong, James Garner and Angel Gomes have also enjoyed game time although the latter's contract has run down.

Teden Mengi and Ethan Laird were in the squad to face Aston Villa with the 18-year-olds the latest to be exposed to the first-team picture.

'We just have to focus,' Solskjaer said of United's plans for next season. 'I don't think one second if any other team is worried about us, we have to worry about ourselves.

'If we keep on improving and building an environment in the training ground and keep building on the culture, add one or two youngsters, maybe add players who can challenge those who we have got here.

Teden Mengi (right) jostles for position with Odion Ighalo during training with United

Brandon Williams is another to have gained first-team experience for United this season. Solskjaer sees the academy as a key part of Manchester United's growth going forward

'Of course it's exciting, but we can't think that far. You don't really have the time or focus.

'You can't think three months ahead now with players who are in and around the first-team.

'Of course, there are youngsters who you know are going to go out on loan, that need exposure, game-time, but those who are in and around the first-team now, they only have one focus, and that's Southampton, then it's onto the next one. We need to finish the season strong.'

United have been on sensational form since the restart and will look to continue their push for Champions League football next season as they welcome Southampton on Monday night.

NEW FORWARDS JOIN THE ACADEMY

Manchester United can confirm the signing of two new additions at Under-18s level.

Forwards Alejandro Garnacho and Charlie McNeill have joined the club’s Academy from Atletico Madrid and Manchester City respectively.

Garnacho, 16, mainly featured in Atletico Madrid’s Juvenil B side last season but also appeared for their Under-19s team.
The Spaniard, who can operate up front as well as on both wings, has completed a period of self-isolation after arriving from the Spanish capital and can now begin training with his new team-mates.

McNeill is a 17-year-old striker who has represented England up to Under-16s level and was a prolific goalscorer during his time in Manchester City’s younger age-groups.

The 2020/21 intake of players have enjoyed successful starts to their United scholarships. Isak Hansen, Joe Hugill and Logan Pye have already had the opportunity to face senior opposition in the EFL Trophy, as well as playing for the Under-18s.

Shola Shoretire has been with the Under-23s squad in recent weeks which will enhance his individual development as he learns to play against more physical opponents.

Alvaro Fernandez has already scored his first goal for an Under-18s side which has also featured Rhys Bennett, Omari Forson and Radek Vitek, while Marc Jurado, Oliver Kilner and Daniel Polokowski have all played in a series of Under-17s fixtures.

KAMBWALA JOINS THE UNITED ACADEMY

Manchester United is pleased to confirm the signing of Willy Kambwala from Sochaux.

The 16-year-old defender has represented the Ligue 2 club up to Under-19s level and has captained France’s Under-17s.

Kambwala will join Neil Ryan’s Under-18s squad once his mandatory period of self-isolation is complete.
The centre-back’s arrival completes a busy period of Academy recruitment, which has seen eight players join United’s Professional Development Phase from outside of the club and five players from the Under-16s group earn scholarships.

ACADEMY LADS LEARN FROM INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Head of Academy Nick Cox has outlined why international football is of real benefit to Manchester United's youngsters.

As is the case during any of these breaks, a number of young Reds are representing their national teams across the globe, even if the COVID-19 regulations have imposed more restrictions than usual.

Nevertheless, some of those to receive call-ups include striker Joe Hugill (pictured scoring against Blackburn Rovers in Premier League 2 above), who is at a training camp with England’s Under-18s at St George’s Park, after making an instant impression in the Under-23s and Under-18s since signing from Sunderland.

Centre-back Will Fish was on standby for that get-together while Omari Forson was also selected by England, at Under-17 level.

Iestyn Hughes has headed off to Wales’ Under-19s, with Noam Emeran (Under-19s) and Hannibal (Under-18s) away playing for France.

More senior United colleagues such as Dylan Levitt (Wales), Ethan Galbraith (Northern Ireland), Teden Mengi and James Garner (both England) have also received call-ups at various levels.

“Some of our boys are away on international duty and that, for us, is about them obviously enjoying the achievement of representing their countries and the sense of pride which comes with that,” Cox told us. “But actually international football offers a different set of experiences to the ones that we can offer back home.
“Different format of competitions, a different group of players, different playing styles, different coaching systems and some of our boys may even be playing in different positions. All of that is healthy stuff to throw into the melting pot.

“With the week the boys might have, on international duty, all of that is when you really start to understand the nuances of what proper youth development looks like.
“So we’re excited by seeing how the boys get on even if international football is slightly limited in some countries, where they can’t travel, but we’ll do our best to support the players wherever we can.”

ACADEMY DEFENDERS JOIN BURNLEY

Manchester United have confirmed two of our Academy defenders have signed for Burnley on permanent deals.

The Clarets have announced the capture of Owen Dodgson and Calen Gallagher-Allison, after both enjoyed successful trials with the Turf Moor outfit.

Dodgson has played for Burnley's Under-23s while Gallagher-Allison has been appearing in the Under-18 Northern Premier League.

Burnley have other former United Academy players in their senior squad, at the moment, including Tom Heaton, Phil Bardsley, Jimmy Dunne, Josh Brownhill, Robbie Brady, Max Thompson and Dwight McNeil.

We would like to wish Owen and Calen the very best of luck for their future careers.

Meanwhile, United Under-18s' away game at Stoke City cannot be shown live on MUTV due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the Potters' base.

The fixture for Neil Ryan's side is taking place at 11:00 GMT on Saturday morning. However, the Under-23s' home game with Tottenham, at Leigh Sports Village, on Sunday (17:00 GMT) is being shown on the channel.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints 'top striker' Joe Hugill could be in line for Manchester United debut soon after scoring FOUR GOALS in drubbing of Liverpool U23s... and netting 14 in just 10 starts this season

* Manchester United's Under 23s won 6-3 at bitter rivals Liverpool on Saturday
* Teenage striker Joe Hugill scored four for the Red Devils in an emphatic victory
* He now has 14 goals in 17 games for United across U18 and U23 level this season

All eyes may have been on Amad Diallo but it could be his Under-23 team-mate Joe Hugill who is next in line for a first-team Manchester United debut.

The 17-year-old grabbed the headlines on Saturday by scoring four goals as United's U23s thumped bitter rivals Liverpool 6-3 on their own patch.

That took the striker's tally to 14 goals overall this season, having scored eight times for the U23s and a further six for the U18s. The teenager's stats are even more impressive when you consider he has achieved the feat in just 17 games, only 10 of which have been as a starter.

Joe Hugill (centre) could be in line for a Man United debut soon, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Hugill scored four goals for United's Under 23s as they won 6-3 at rivals Liverpool on Saturday. The 17-year-old now has 14 goals in 17 games for United across U18 and U23 level this season. Red Devils manager Solskjaer was pleased with what he saw from Hugill on Saturday afternoon

And Hugill's quadruple has caught the eye of Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Asked about whether Diallo, who joined in a £37million transfer from Atalanta last month, would get some first-team action soon, the Norwegian replied: 'We're gonna give him the time to settle in.

'If we go from that game [vs Liverpool], I'd pick Joe Hugill.

'Four goals by Hugill, he's a top striker as well, we're looking forward to seeing his development.

'Amad gets a good start and why Joe didn't take the penalty himself to get five goals I'm going to ask him.'

Hugill, who joined the club from Sunderland last summer, could follow the likes of Marcus Rashford and more recently Mason Greenwood in progressing through the United ranks to play for the first team.

As for Diallo, Solskjaer was pleased with his U23 debut too as he scored United's other two goals from the weekend - including a panenka penalty.

'I don't think it's gonna be too long before he's involved in a matchday squad,' he added about the 18-year-old winger.
