Default Re: Nemanja Matic

Born-again Nemanja Matic is rewarded with new Manchester United deal until 2023 after rediscovering his best form alongside Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes after the lockdown

* Nemanja Matic has agreed a new Manchester United contract until 2023
* The Serbian midfielder has established himself as a key player since the restart
* Alongside Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba, Matic is a primary option for United

Nemanja Matic has signed a new contract at Manchester United until 2023.

Matic, 31, was due to be a free agent this summer but United triggered the 12-month extension in his current deal in March allowing negotiations to continue.

'I'm very happy that I will continue to be part of this great club,' said the Serbia midfielder. 'As a player, I still have a lot more to give and achieve in my career and to do that with Manchester United will be a huge honour.

Nemanja Matic put pen to paper on a new deal at Manchester United running through to 2023

'This is a really exciting team to be part of, we have a good balance of youth and experience within the squad and there is great camaraderie amongst the group.

'This is a key part of the season and we are playing well. We will continue to fight to finish the season on a high and make our amazing supporters proud.'

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer added: 'I am delighted that Nemanja has signed a new contract, I know his experience, professionalism and leadership will be invaluable to this young talented group.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (left) posed alongside Matic after the Serbian signed to secure his future. Matic has been instrumental for United since the restart and has spurned interest elsewhere. Matic is first choice to anchor midfield behind Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes

'We have great strength in midfield and Nemanja's attributes are a key part of that.

'Nemanja has been here for three seasons now and really understands the values of playing for Manchester United.

'He remains hugely ambitious and determined which will be vital as we look to achieve our aims over the coming years.'

Matic has also attracted interest from Italy and Major League Soccer in the US, but always made it clear that his first choice was to stay at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea player has made 114 appearances since joining his old manager Jose Mourinho at United in a £40million deal in the summer of 2017, scoring a total of four goals.

Matic looked to have fallen out of favour this season with Solskjaer preferring Scott McTominay and Fred for the defensive midfield berths.

But the arrival of Bruno Fernandes and return to fitness of Paul Pogba has altered the dynamic in the team.

Matic is currently first choice to anchor the midfield and has produced some of his best form of late.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

Signed as an identikit Jose Mourinho player, Nemanja Matic has revitalised his floundering Manchester United career and is now a midfield cornerstone under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after signing new three-year deal at Old Trafford

* Nemanja Matic was signed by Jose Mourinho in 2017 at Manchester United
* But the Serb struggled for game time after the Portuguese was sacked in 2018
* He made four starts this season before December under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* But Matic has now leapfrogged Fred and Scott McTominay in the pecking order

Manchester United have regularly been linked with holding midfielders. From Declan Rice, Wilfred Ndidi and Sean Longstaff of the Premier League to many more overseas.

Now it appears Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can instead save his money for a glamorous centre forward or flying winger like Jadon Sancho.

Scott McTominay has a new deal and this week Nemanja Matic signed a contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2023 – completing one of the best comeback stories of recent times.

Nemanja Matic put pen to paper on a new deal at Manchester United running through to 2023. Matic has been instrumental for United since the restart and is now part of a bright future

A £40million flop who once symbolised United's post-Fergie decline, the Serbian is now part of a bright future under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Matic has played in 12 of United's current 17-game unbeaten run, providing the defensive insurance to allow Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood to flourish.

But it wasn't that long ago he seemed certain to leave Old Trafford. Signed by Jose Mourinho, he was considered slow and sluggish by fans who assumed he'd follow the Special One out the door when he was sacked in December 2018 with United already 19 points off the top.

Solskjaer promised a new way based on speed and youthful energy, and it seemed hard to see where Matic would fit into that.

How wrong that theory has been. Matic is now on the team sheet ahead of £52million Brazilian Fred and the highly-regarded McTominay.

While United could have let Matic's contract run out, Solskjaer has been bullish throughout 2020 in keeping him.

'I know his experience, professionalism and leadership is invaluable to this young talented group,' says the United manager.

'He really understands the values of playing for Manchester United. He remains hugely ambitious and determined.'

So reports of Matic's demise were greatly exaggerated and he remains at United, still the last player to have won a Premier League title, with Chelsea in 2015.

When he joined United, he looked an identikit Mourinho buy, big and strong. In 2017-18, he played 36 of the 38 Premier League games with United as they finished second in the Premier League, before heading to Russia to play in the World Cup.

Quote:
NEMANJA MATIC THIS SEASON

Appearances: 27
Starts: 23
Goals: 1
Assists: 3
Yellows/Reds: 1/1

The Serbian was signed as an identikit Jose Mourinho player in the heart of central midfield

Yet things weren't all plain-sailing. United fans felt the team was too negative when Matic and McTominay played together and let their feelings be known.

When Solskjaer culled Chris Smalling, Romelu Lukaku, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Alexis Sanchez, it seemed likely Matic would follow.

Fred and McTominay were ahead of him in the team in the first half of this season. Matic still seemed burned out from going to the World Cup and struggled with a groin problem.

He made only four starts this season before December - and United scored only twice in those games against Leicester, Astana, West Ham and AZ Alkmaar.

Matic is now ahead of midfielders Fred and Scott McTominay in the pecking order. Matic has had to bide his time this season, making just four starts before December. Matic is now a cornerstone in front of the back four and a key member of United's unbeaten run

The turning point came in the final match of 2019, away to Burnley. Worried about the physical capabilities of Sean Dyche's side, Solskjaer drafted in Matic and he protected the defence admirably in a 2-0 United win.

He's grown in confidence and fitness since. His outstanding goal in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Manchester City in January proved the winner on the night and United felt they would have won the tie had the Serbian not been dismissed towards the end.

Solskjaer didn't blame Matic for the red card, storming: 'It was never a sending off. An absolute joke.' And Matic has been a cornerstone of the team before and after lockdown.

He has always viewed his role as an elder statesman in a talented young United team. Quiet and polite in interviews, he is vocal in training which Solskjaer likes.

'Quality and experience bring you the title I think,' he says. 'At Chelsea we had young talents like Eden Hazard but also John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic. There was a mix.

'Last season hurt me. When I went home I always looked in the mirror to see where I could do better. Of course I was not happy. There were some games I didn't perform the way I wanted. This is football.'

Regular games has got rid of the rustiness Matic suffered from in the early part of the season. He isn't sluggish any more - there is a spring in his step.

Matic: MU Siap Rebut Gelar Liga Inggris Musim Depan
Putra Rusdi K - detikSport

Manchester - Gelandang Manchester United, Nemanja Matic, optimis timnya menjadi kandidat peraih Liga Inggris musim depan.

MATIC RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has retired from international football at the age of 32.

Nemanja, who made his national team debut in 2008, earned 48 caps for Serbia and scored two goals in that period.

He last represented Serbia in October 2019 and was part of the squad who played at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

While the United central midfielder is yet to officially make an announcement, Vladimir Matijasevic, the director of the Serbia Football Association, confirmed Nemanja’s decision on Friday afternoon.

“Other than saying it was time for younger players to take over, Matic did not state any other specific reasons for quitting,” he said. “We respect his decision. He is 32 years old and he's had an exerting club season. European club football is demanding and hence we are aware that we'll have to inject fresh blood into the national team.

“We talked a few days ago. I called him on the phone, we also agreed to have coffee, if our time and obligations allow it. It was an extremely pleasant and fair conversation. He is determined to put an end to his national team career. The head coach also spoke to him, about which you will surely hear more at a press conference on Monday. That is Nemanja's decision that we must respect.”

Nemanja’s international career began in December 2008 when he played in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Poland.

During the intervening years, the midfielder became a mainstay of the national side and even captained the team in a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in September 2018.

Serbia can still qualify for next summer’s European Championship, if they beat Norway in a play-off game in October, with the winner facing Scotland or Israel for the chance to compete at the 24-team tournament in 2021.

Matic’s decision means he will have a reduced fixture schedule in the coming years, something that should help prolong his club career.

The 32-year-old was a vital part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign, having missed the majority of the opening months through injury.

Nemanja played in all but one of our last 19 league games and didn’t miss a single domestic outing following the resumption of football after Project Restart.

'From the next season there is no excuse, we HAVE to fight for the title': Nemanja Matic insists Man Utd must be among title contenders after showing the 'proper' United post-lockdown

* Manchester United enjoyed an unbeaten finish in 2019-20 to secure the top four
* Nemanja Matic has warned rivals they saw the 'proper' United post-lockdown
* The Serbian says there will be no excuse if United fail to challenge for the title

Nemanja Matic says Manchester United have no excuse but to challenge for the Premier League title next season and warned rivals that they saw the 'proper' United post-lockdown.

An unbeaten run after the 2019-20 season restarted after the coronavirus lockdown secured an unlikely top four finish and a remarkable turnaround for the Red Devils after an inconsistent showing earlier in the season.

Six draws and three wins to end the season saw them leapfrog Leicester City and Chelsea into third place, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally finding a settled starting 11.

Nemanja Matic says rivals saw the 'proper' United post-lockdown and outlined their title goals. The Serbian's strong performances has rewarded him with a new United contract until 2023

The addition of Bruno Fernandes in January proved to be a catlyst for United's season and after impressing with their attacking displays, Matic thinks the top prize should be the ambition for next season.

'From the next season there is no excuse,' Matic told MUTV. 'We have to go with everything. We have to fight for the title because I felt that this year we dropped some points too easy.

There is a big gap for United to close between them and the top two clubs, with champions Liverpool finishing a whopping 33 points and even second-placed City 15 points ahead of United last season.

The Red Devils enjoyed an unbeaten run after the 2019-20 restart to secure a top four finish

'We allowed Liverpool to win [the title], I don't know, ten games before the season finished. They won the league, so we cannot allow that. We need to fight to the end. We have to play with more confidence, with more responsibility,' Matic added.

'My personal target is to win the league with United and I am sure that everyone wants to do the same. We have to promise our supporters that we will do our best - exactly what we have done after [the coronavirus lockdown] when we started to play again. That's Manchester United.'

The Serbian was a key part of United's upturn in form and has signed a new contract to remain with the Red Devils until 2023.

He says rivals saw what his side can really do post-lockdown and says there will be no excuses if they fail to challenge to top teams next season.

'We have to win five, six consecutive games then you can drop some points, then again you have to do that run. Like that we can win the league. In the beginning of the season we were not stable, we won one or two games then we lost and we drew. Proper United is exactly what we did after [lockdown] and I hope we can continue like that next season.'

United have been keen to bring in more quality to Old Trafford this summer but have been so far unsuccessful, stalling in their attempts to sign Jadon Sancho while Donny van de Beek and Jack Grealish remain among their other targets.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

MATIC: EVERY GAME IS A NEW STORY FOR US

Manchester United will travel to Brighton and Hove Albion for the second time in quick succession on Wednesday night for our Carabao Cup fourth-round tie, but Nemanja Matic doesn’t expect Saturday’s last-gasp victory for the Reds to have much bearing on the latest battle between the sides.

Our 3-2 triumph at the Amex came in the most dramatic of fashions as Bruno Fernandes fired home the winner from the spot with the last kick of the match after we’d conceded an equaliser with seconds remaining.

Matic admitted to us he’d never played in a game with such an incredible conclusion, but the midfielder expects a completely different contest on Wednesday.

“It has happened a few times, playing a team in the league and then again in the cup [straightaway], but I think every game is a new story and every game you need to prepare at your best,” he told us. “It will be a new game on Wednesday and everything is possible. We know we have to play better. Of course there will be some changes because them and us are playing games every three or four days.

“If they come on the pitch with some of the same players who played on Saturday then we will see those videos and see how they play and the way they create attacks and the way they defend. We can use that. But I think it will be a completely different game. And we are ready to compete again and hopefully we can win again.”

Reflecting on an important first three points of the season, Matic added: “It was not our best game of course, and we all know that. But the most important thing is we won that game. We have to respect Brighton because they played some amazing football and I think it will be very hard for every team to take points from them. It was a crazy game, we have to admit that. But that’s football, everything is possible in football.

“We conceded the second goal, I think, 30 seconds or one minute before the final whistle, but we kept believing that we could score in the last seconds and we did. Of course with VAR, the referee made the right decision, we all saw that the player played the ball with his hand, so we won and we are happy with three points. But we are not happy with our performance and we know that we can do much better. Hopefully, we will show that on Wednesday.”

Matic played the full 90 minutes in the Reds’ third-round win away to Luton Town with the Serbian declaring our 3-0 win a very professional job.

“We knew it would be hard against a Championship team,” he said. “When you play those teams, you know it will always be difficult and the game showed exactly that. Every team in England has qualities and every team can hurt you, if you allow them.

“So I’m happy we managed to beat them and didn’t concede a goal. The most important thing is we went through and a clean sheet is especially pleasing for the players that play at the back, like me, we are always happy when we don’t concede.”

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

WHAT DOES NEMANJA THINK OF OUR NEW SIGNINGS?

Nemanja Matic says he is excited by the four new signings made by Manchester United on the final day of the summer transfer window.

The Reds captured Edinson Cavani, Amad Diallo (who arrives in January), Facundo Pellistri and Alex Telles during a whirlwind 24-hour period on deadline day, and the Serbian has told us that the new acquisitions will provide a welcome boost for the squad.

“It's always good when we have additions to the team,” said the experienced midfielder. “We’ve signed quality players, so we will see what they can bring to our team. So we're happy; we are happy to see them. Hopefully they can fit very well in our team and they can win some trophies with us.”

Arguably the most high-profile transfer of United’s window – which started with the arrival of Donny van de Beek from Ajax – was that of legendary Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani.

The ex-Paris Saint-Germain man is a familiar foe for Matic, who has played against the man known as El Matador on several occasions during his time with former clubs Benfica and Chelsea.

And Matic made it immediately clear that the striker is someone held in great esteem by those at the top of the football world.

“I played against him a few times,” explained Nemanja. “A great player, a great player. Very experienced. He scores goals, always. So I hope he will continue to do the same job for us.”

Asked whether the players shared the same feverish sense of expectation as fans around transfer-deadline day, Matic was more circumspect.

According to the 32-year-old, news travels fast inside the walls of the Aon Training Complex, so the players are often aware of what transfers are in the pipeline.

Matic says that the players’ excitement comes when new personalities actually arrive and join the squad.

“Inside the club, we probably, more or less, know what is going on,” he admits. “So we don't need to read the papers to have more information.

“But we're always excited to see somebody come in and, of course, it's always good to see new faces in the team, especially when we sign the quality players like we did. So yeah, I'm happy. I'm happy for the team and happy for them [the new players].”

Three of United’s four new players have been included in the 25-man A list set to compete in the group stage of this season’s Champions League: Cavani, Pellistri and Telles. Diallo is set to join from Atalanta at a later date.

Nemanja Matic urges his Manchester United team-mates to 'kill the game' after nervy victory over West Brom as he admits they 'have to do better' if they are to having any chance of winning the title this season

* Manchester United beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday
* However, Nemanja Matic says a 1-0 result is 'not good enough' for Man United
* He stated they were 'happy with the three points' but not with their performance
* He claims United need to 'concentrate more in attack' and 'kill the game earlier'

Nemanja Matic says that Manchester United must develop a killer instinct to win titles.

United achieved their first home win of the new Premier League season in a nerve-racking 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, but Matic says 'one-nil is not enough'.

He claims United need to 'concentrate more in attack' and 'kill the game earlier' to pick up more 'points' and shutout opposing teams.

Bruno Fernandes' second-half retaken penalty proved to be the difference against Slaven Bilic's side, but West Brom continued to threaten United up to the final whistle.

Matic voiced his concern over United's inability to finish off West Brom - who are currently sitting in the relegation zone.

He told MUTV: 'When we score first we have to go on and kill the game as soon as possible, especially in the Premier League. We have to improve on that.

'Every team has quality, every team is dangerous. One-nil is not enough. They almost scored, they had one hit the crossbar. So they were always dangerous.

'We have to make sure that next time we have more concentration in attack and make sure we try to kill the game early.'

The result did, however, see United move into ninth position in the Premier League table.

Nemanja Matic says that Manchester United's 1-0 win over West Brom was not good enough. He claims Manchester United need to 'concentrate more in attack' and 'kill the game earlier'

It also gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first win at Old Trafford in the 2020-2021 campaign after losing to Crystal Palace, Spurs and Arsenal on home soil and drawing to Chelsea.

Speaking of the importance of the game against West Brom, Matic said: 'We said before the game we had to win. We had to get the three points to go close to the teams at the top of the league.

'We are happy with the three points but not our performance. We have to do better.

'But wins are the most important, of course, because at the end of the season nobody will ask you how you played, if you were amazing. The most important is you collect points.

'Manchester United want to win titles and our aim is to be in first position and we will do everything for that. We can do that only as a team.'

UNITED REVIEW: MATIC'S MILAN MEMORIES

Nemanja Matic has many great memories of watching both Manchester United and AC Milan as a youngster and, ahead of our Europa League last-16 clash with the Italian side on Thursday, the midfielder reflected on those players who had inspired him growing up.

As well as following the Reds, the Serbian kept an eye on a number of great Balkan players who were making their mark in Serie A. Dejan Savicevic and Boban were two who stood out for the young Nemanja, with the duo part of Serie A and Champions League-winning Milan sides.

In an exclusive interview with the Milan edition of our official matchday programme, United Review, Matic told us: “For me, Savicevic was the best player. I think if you ask Milan supporters who remember him playing, then they will say the same because he was a special player and at that time, for me, he was one of the best in Europe.

“Boban was great also and on the other side you had [Dejan] Stankovic at Inter Milan, he was amazing and he won many things with them. I had the opportunity to play with him a little bit, also with [Nemanja] Vidic… so yes the Italian league for me was probably, back in the 90s, the best league in the world.”

Looking ahead to Thursday's first leg clash, Matic discussed the qualities of two familiar faces in Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diogo Dalot.

“First of all, they are both great people,” declared our no.31. “Zlatan is a little bit more experienced; Diogo is just starting out in his career and has 15 more years to play and Zlatan only has 10,” he added, with a smile.

“It will be great to see them but I hope they don’t have a great day today! Of course, we wish them all the best in Serie A. They are top players, especially of course Zlatan. If he is going to be ready for the game then for sure he will try to show again his qualities, but I can recommend to him to avoid me!” [Laughs]

Assessing the impact Dalot has made at the San Siro during his loan spell this term, Matic added: “I have seen a couple of games and he’s been playing well every time he plays. I think it was a good move for him, to get some minutes and to play at another big club.

”To play at Milan is like playing for Manchester United, you get lots of pressure, many supporters follow you, so yes he has done well and I hope he will continue that way and then one day come back and play here.“

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic refused to rule out a return to former club Benfica in the future and admitted they are 'always in the heart'.

Matic left Chelsea to join the Portuguese side in 2011 before moving back to Stamford Bridge in 2014. He made the switch to Old Trafford in 2017 and last summer he signed a new deal that will keep him at United until 2023.

The 32-year-old insisted he is not thinking about leaving the Red Devils any time soon but, when asked about where he would like to finish his career, he left the door open for a potential return to Portugal.

'I still don't think about finishing my career. Let's see,' Matic told Sport TV.

'For me, Benfica was always in the heart. Let's see what the future will bring.

'If Benfica ever thinks it needs me again, let's think about it, but now I'm very happy at Man United, I don't think about leaving, but in football you never know.

'If one day I return to Portugal, the only team I wanted to play in Portugal was Benfica.

'I was very happy there. Benfica is one of the best clubs in the world.

'I was very happy there in the team, with the fans and with everyone in the club.

'Whenever I have time, I like to go through Lisbon. My family also likes it a lot and misses everyone from Lisbon.'

Matic has been in and out of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season with 10 starts in the Premier League and 26 appearances in all competitions.

The midfielder is yet to win a trophy with the club after finishing as runners up in the FA Cup in 2018.
