Pensiun Lalu Main Lagi, Paul Scholes Sempat Diejek Karena Pakai Sepatu KW
Adhi Prasetya - detikSport

Jakarta - Paul Scholes sempat pensiun namun bermain lagi bersama Manchester United.

Scholes: Solskjaer Tak Lagi Didukung Penuh Manajemen
Rifqi Ardita Widianto - detikSport

Jakarta - Paul Scholes menilai Manchester United tak mendukung sepenuhnya rencana Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Dukungan manajemen belakangan terasa setengah-setengah.

'This job isn’t for me': Paul Scholes admits Salford need a more experienced manager after his first game in caretaker charge saw his side lose late on at Port Vale

* Port Vale scored an 86th minute winner against Salford at Vale Park in 1-0 win
* Scholes was returning to the ground where he made his Manchester United bow
* The 45-year-old scored two goals that day in a 2-1 League Cup win in 1994
* Midfield maestro has taken over temporarily after Graham Alexander's sacking

Vale Park has changed quite a bit in the 26 years since Paul Scholes made his debut for Manchester United here in the Potteries but, then again, so has he.

The hair isn't quite so ginger as it was the night in September 1994 when a teenage Scholes scored twice in a League Cup win over Port Vale, the first of his 155 goals for United. Now 45, he is greying around the temples.

These days you would expect to find Scholes in the comfort of a TV studio or a directors' box, but Salford City's surprising decision to sack Graham Alexander has landed him with the role of interim manager.

So here we are on a dull October day in Burslem watching the former United star embark on another foray into football management, this time at the club he owns with Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt.

The last attempt, with Oldham Athletic, ended after 31 days in March last year when Scholes resigned following one win in seven games and interference from the owners.

His latest stint also promises to be brief. Firstly, because Salford's development coach Warren Joyce would probably have been in the dugout if he wasn't self-isolating. Secondly, because Scholes really has no desire to be there any longer than he has to.

'Look, I was the one who was available out of the rest of us so Gary asked me to do it and I'll keep on doing it as best I can until we find somebody suitable for the job,' he says candidly.

'This job isn't for me. We all know that at the club. It's for an experienced manager who can take this team forward, so fingers crossed we get the right man.

Paul Scholes won just one match before a dispute with the owner led to him leaving Oldham

'I've only ever done it once and it didn't go that well, so it's an experience I probably could have done without.

'I enjoyed my four weeks at Oldham, of course I did. Would I choose to do it again? Possibly not.' At least, returning to Vale Park must have brought back some happy memories?

'Absolutely. You get a few goosebumps. When you make your debut, it's always a special place for you. I scored one at this end and one at that end.' That was more than his players could manage on Saturday as Cristian Montano volleyed Vale's winner in the 86th minute to put a rather awkward slant on Salford's decision to axe Alexander, the man who led them into the Football League last year and was unbeaten in five games this season.

Worse still, Darron Gibson, another former United player, was taken to hospital with a serious leg injury that resulted in eight minutes of added time.. The trauma of a horrible incident like that is even more graphic in an empty stadium.

Getting the fans back seems more important than ever at the end of a week in which the stalemate between the government and the Premier League continued to hang over the EFL.

Vale owner Carol Shanahan and her husband Kevin have the means to withstand the estimated £1.5m cost of the pandemic. Not all clubs do.

'It's like having a ref and not one decision goes your way,' says Shanahan. 'We haven't had help from the government or the Premier League.

'We've become the victims of the stand-off between the two. I don't care who helps - just help.

'I agree with Gary Neville when he came out this week and said the Premier League have had their chance. They haven't helped us.

'They've spent £1.2billion in transfer fees during this window and we're in a pandemic. It's mad.

'There's no point in having an amazing penthouse if the stories below you are crumbling. It's going to fall.' Shanahan has worked hard to maintain a connection with fans through strange times. A week after receiving an OBE for services to the community, providing food to children and their families in need, she was out on Friday night delivering match-in-a-box packages - Bovril, beer, match programme and pies - to the 31 corporate box owners who weren't allowed to attend Saturday's game.

Any of the club's season ticket holders who ate Sunday lunch at the stadium had the opportunity to sit in their match seat - even though the game finished 24 hours earlier.

And, from now on, Vale are permitted to live stream the action to a function room in the stadium on match days, just as long as fans don't look out of the window.

'That's just too much for me, I don't want to do it,' says Shanahan, laughing at the absurdity of it all when she believes supporters can return in safety. 'We've got a 18,500-capacity stadium and 4,000 season ticket holders. We've been socially distancing for years!'

Paul Scholes reveals Phil Neville tried to persuade him to join Everton when he came out of retirement in 2012 before Sir Alex Ferguson sorted his Manchester United comeback 'in five minutes'... and he returned in a £40 pair of boots from JJB Sports!

* Paul Scholes announced his retirement in 2011 after 17 years at Man United
* He started coaching United's under-23s but felt he was still fit to play
* Former team-mate Phil Neville tried to persuade him to join him at Everton
* But Sir Alex Ferguson arranged a new contract immediately to return to United
* However, the return was top secret with not even United's players knowing
* Unable to tell Nike, Scholes played against Manchester City in £40 pair of boots

Paul Scholes has revealed he considered joining Everton when he came out of retirement in 2012 - before Sir Alex Ferguson arranged his Manchester United return.

The midfielder was 36 when he hung up his boots in 2011 and even had an Old Trafford testimonial to honour 17 years at the club.

By the start of 2012, Scholes was coaching United's under-23 team at their Carrington base but felt he was still fit enough to continue playing.

Scholes, seen playing against Everton for United, could have signed for the Goodison Park club

It was at this point his former United team-mate and Everton captain Phil Neville tried to convince him to come to Goodison Park.

Scholes told DAZN: 'I came back in September [2011] with Warren Joyce and the under 23s and I was training every day.

'I felt as fit as I probably ever had done after having four months off - it was just the break I needed. I said to Joyce that I wanted to play again - I just wanted to play.

'Where it was I didn't care. I didn't expect United to want me back. I spoke to Phil Neville and he said: "Come and play for Everton."

'I've never really wanted to play for anyone else or be involved with any other club but if that was the only option I had then I might have done it, I don't know.'

His former United team-mate Phil Neville was Everton's captain at the time of Scholes's comeback in 2012 and tried to persuade his old pal to sign for them. Scholes, wearing a £40 pair of boots from JJB Sports, returned to United action against City

But despite his advancing years, Ferguson didn't hesitate to offer Scholes a new contract inside 'five minutes' and bring him back into the first-team squad.

In January 2012, Scholes made his 'second debut' for United in an FA Cup clash with Manchester City before continuing for another 18 months, winning one final Premier League title - his 11th - into the bargain.

However, it wasn't as easy as simply walking back into the United side.

He added: 'The next step had to be Mike Phelan, the assistant manager. I must have spoke to him at 7.30 in the morning because I was so nervous the night before waiting to see what he thought and he thought it was a great idea.

'Then there's one more person to get through which was the most important. As soon as I saw Mick I went to see the manager and told him I want to play again.

It quickly became apparent Scholes could still play and he scored four times in 2011-2012. Scholes played under Sir Alex Ferguson for another 18 months and won the Premier League

'I said that I feel fit and I feel okay and [he said]: "Do you want to play here or do you want to go somewhere else?"

'There's no way I wanted to go somewhere else. He said: "'Right I'll sort your contract out," and that was within five minutes.

'He was on the phone to David Gill and I think it was the next day I signed for another six months. And then you think: "What have I done?"

'He brought me into the squad to play Man City in the FA Cup. He told me not to tell anybody and the players had absolutely no idea.

'My wife knew and I think I might have told my dad but nobody else knew.

'We get to the ground on the Sunday and my kit is there. I actually couldn't get any boots. They couldn't know I was playing.

'If I'd asked for a real pair from Nike then they'd know something was going on.

'I went to the local JJB and I think they were £40 at the time which I thought was quite expensive.'

Mantab sekali thread ini. Scholsy pemain favorit saya di United, ALL TIME. Senang berkesempatan tumbuh kembang jadi fans United saat Scholes masih aktif main. Sheer legend on the field.

Apalagi gol2nya dari luar kotak penalti yang dulu kerap kejadian. Agak susah sekarang nemu long range shooter di United, makanya kalau-kalau ada yang bikin gol jarak jauh begitu senengnya nggak ketulungan.

Paul Scholes believes Liverpool have same attacking blueprint used by Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United as ex-midfielder claims 'there were always two forwards on the bench to come on and make the difference'

* Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Liverpool's frontline
* Scholes believes Klopp's attack is similar to United's squads under Ferguson
* Liverpool put on a dominant display to beat Wolves 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday
* Salah, Mane and Firmino all started the game before Jota came on in second half
* Scholes claims Ferguson had similar tactics in having four forwards at all times

Paul Scholes has identified similarities between Liverpool's superb frontline and the Manchester United teams he played in that were managed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

Jurgen Klopp's men romped to a 4-0 win over Wolves on Sunday evening, which saw Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota all play starring roles at Anfield.

While Salah was the only man of the four to get on the scoresheet against Wolves, Scholes heaped praise on the attacking quartet and drew comparisons to similar tactics that Ferguson would employ while winning titles as manager of United.

Paul Scholes believes that Liverpool have copied Sir Alex Ferguson's attacking blueprint. Following the addition of Diogo Jota, Liverpool now have a wealth of attackers

Scholes pointed out how the legendary Scottish boss would always have a surplus of attacking talent to make the difference when needed, rather than just focusing on one or two forwards at most to get the job done.

And with all of Liverpool's frontline singing from the same hymnsheet, Scholes believes Klopp has the blueprint to retain the title once again this season.

He said during Amazon Sport's coverage of Sunday's game: 'I go back to my playing days at Man Utd - we always had four centre forwards.

'If two of them weren't doing it for an hour there were always two on the bench to come on and make the difference. That's what they built here.

'OK they're playing in a different way, I know that, with the three.

'But, having Jota in the wings it has to sharpen you up. Whether Jota's playing and Firmino's on the bench or whoever's on the bench it does liven you up.

'You're having a little look across all the time just keeping you on your toes. Is he going to bring me off?

'You have to perform to make sure he doesn't.'

The 11-time Premier League winner also revealed that he is backing the Merseyside team to win the title once again this season.

Scholes has noticed how Jurgen Klopp can call on four superb forwards at any time. Sir Alex Ferguson liked to use four forwards at any one time and would deploy Dimitar Berbatov (left), Cristiano Ronaldo (centre left), Wayne Rooney (centre) and Carlos Tevez (right). The attacking blueprint used by Ferguson won him plenty of titles during his reign

'It took a long time for Liverpool to achieve what they did last year,' he continued. 'Great credit to them, they were fantastic, they deserved it.

'It was a shame for them that the fans weren't involved. I'm sure there would have been week-long celebrations, parades, there would have been all sorts. It's a shame, but the fans are coming back now.

'I won't say I hope they win it again for their fans, but I think they're well on their way to doing that anyway.'

Paul Scholes believes Manchester United can win the Premier League after 'finding an exciting way of playing' and Michael Owen agrees, but only if Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes start games together

* Manchester United beat Sheffield United 3-2 in the Premier League on Thursday
* The Red Devils now lie five points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand
* Paul Scholes and Michael Owen claims Manchester United can win the title
* Scholes believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to stick with Thursday's formation

Paul Scholes and Michael Owen believe Manchester United are capable of winning the Premier League this season after picking up a sixth straight away win at Sheffield United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side came from behind to beat Chris Wilder's side 3-2 on Thursday night to move five points behind league leaders Liverpool with a game in hand over the Premier League champions.

Marcus Rashford scored twice either side of an Anthony Martial strike and Scholes believes United's attacking line-up can serve them well to launch a title charge.

Paul Scholes and Michael Owen say Man United can win the title after beating Sheffield United. Scholes claims the Red Devils will be challenging in May barring any fitness issues

Scholes told Amazon Prime Sport: 'I think if they can keep nine or ten players fit for the next 26 games they will be there or thereabouts. They've found an exciting way of playing.

'I think (Solskjaer) has changed formations and personnel a lot. For five games (last year) they didn't change the team and it was this team tonight without the left-back and goalkeeper. It's a 4-2-3-1 and it worked.

'It's a formation that really suits the team. (Bruno) Fernandes in the number 10 role feeding Martial, Rashford and (Mason) Greenwood. How fantastic is that? They're one of the best, quickest finishers around in Europe when they get chances.

'The problem is getting possession and getting control with (Paul) Pogba and (Nemanja) Matic. These two need to get control of the game, Fernandes needs that. Once they've got that they're flying.'

Marcus Rashford (R) scored a brace and Anthony Martial (C) scored one in Thursday's 3-2 win

The Red Devils fell behind in the opening minutes on Thursday night as Dean Henderson's goalkeeping error allowed David McGoldrick to score but Rashford and Martial turned the game on its head with a goal each before half-time.

Rashford then added another from Pogba's pass to open up a two-goal lead but the Blades hit back just before second-half stoppage time through McGoldrick, with Solskjaer's side holding on for a slender lead.

Michael Owen believes playing the likes of Pogba, Fernandes and Rashford in the Red Devils squad on a regular basis is a must for Solskjaer, who has tampered with his starting line-up since the start of the season.

Owen told Prime Sport: 'Well they can (win the league). There's a few teams that can. The only way they can is by getting their best players on the pitch.

'If you've got Pogba and Fernandes in your squad you can't win the title if they're in the stands. You've got these unbelievable players you've spent millions on, the only way you will win the title is with your best players playing

If you take two or three out then they're an ok team. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to keep finding a way of getting Pogba, Fernades and Rashford playing togehter, how they haven't kept them together is unbelievable.'

Two-goal hero Rashford, however, was quick to quash any idea of a title charge as he believes the season can change very quickly for every team.

Owen claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to play his best players to win football games. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are now five points behind leaders Liverpool with a game in hand

The England forward told Amazon: 'We take it one game at a time, it's early on in the season. There's a lot of football to be played.

'There will be a lot of ups and downs for everyone. We have to find the consistency away from home at home and we will see where we are late in the season.'

Manchester United have now won six games in a row on the road but their focus now turns to Old Trafford where they have won just once in the league all season.

Solskjaer's squad face Leeds United in a derby clash on Sunday night hoping to close the gap on the top of the table.

Emotional Paul Scholes slams Glazers for 'using Manchester United as a toy to make money' as he blasts new Director of Football role and Ed Woodward's work as chief executive... but says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer IS the man to bring back the glory days

* Paul Scholes hit out at the Glazer family for their running of Manchester United
* The legendary ex-midfielder said they 'use this club as a toy to make money'
* Hostility towards the club's American owners has ramped up in recent weeks
* The Glazers were heavily involved in the doomed European Super League
* Scholes does think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can bring glory back to Old Trafford

Paul Scholes has delivered a damning assessment of Manchester United's operation off the pitch, claiming the Glazer family simply 'use this club as a toy to make money'.

Hostility towards the club's American owners has ramped up in recent weeks after their role in the formation of the doomed European Super League, with fans protesting against them outside Old Trafford.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has also had his critics and it was announced last week he will leave the club at the end of the year in the wake of the Super League debacle.

Paul Scholes has given a brutal assessment of Manchester United's operation off of the pitch. Scholes claimed the Glazer family - United's owners 'use this club as a toy to make money'

United recently had a shake-up behind the scenes with John Murtough and Darren Fletcher named football director and technical director respectively.

But Scholes, who spent over 20 years at the club and won 11 Premier League titles, is less than impressed with how United is being run and insisted the club's barren run of trophies under the Glazers is 'ridiculous'.

However, speaking before Manchester United's Europa League semi-final first leg with Roma, Scholes said he does believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to bring glory back to Old Trafford.

He said: 'I'm not sure there ever will be a connection with these owners.

'As long as there are billionaires owners from another country, I don't think there will be a connection and we have to stop pining for that. The most important thing for the fans is what happens on the pitch.

'Look at the club, the resources they've had and they haven't won a trophy for four years. It's ridiculous. I don't think Ed (Woodward) is a football man - we've had five or six years of choosing the wrong managers, the wrong type of players for this football club and it is all down to the ownership.

Scholes also criticised Ed Woodward for the club's lack of progress on the pitch in recent years

'It comes down to billionaire owners who are greedy and just use this club as a toy to make money.

'Ok they are getting on the right track now I think, I hope and Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) has done a fantastic job getting the club almost back to challenging for silverware – they're here at a semi-final and need to go one further.

'When the football is alright and the team is winning trophies, who cares who the owners are?

'This club should have the very best of everything. Directors of football – have they got the best of the best? They invented the role of football director. What is that?

'Is he signing new players for us, ordering new footballs? If they want a director of football, get the very best out there. They probably don't have the best manager out there but he's on the way.

'This club gave me my life, this will be me until the day I die.'

But Scholes does believe that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the man to lead the club back to glory

Scholes' former United team-mate Gary Neville branded Manchester United's initial European Super League apology a 'farce' on Wednesday.

Football breathed a huge sigh of relief last week when the £3.5bn, JP Morgan-backed scheme that threatened to change the landscape of the game fell apart just 48 hours after it was unveiled.

Liverpool and United were driving forces behind the breakaway league alongside Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Arsenal's billionaire owner Stan Kroenke.

Neville slammed United's initial 52-word statement in which they said they had 'listened carefully' to fans, branding it a 'farce'.

'We have seen this week how out of touch some of the owners are,' the Sky Sports pundit said on The Gary Neville Podcast.

'The Manchester United first apology was a farce. No one has put their name on it, who would? It was an absolute joke of an apology. It wasn't even an apology, I don't think.

'Then Joel Glazer came out five or six hours later because he probably recognised that the first apology was just a disgrace.'

United have trebled security at their training base and increased protection around senior executives amid concerns over anti-Glazer protests.

Sportsmail revealed that United players and staff were shocked at how easily protesters were able to breach security at Carrington last week before confronting Solskjaer.

Fans also demonstrated against the Glazers outside Old Trafford and flew a banner over Elland Road before Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Leeds calling for the American owners to go following the collapse of the European Super League.

'It was a MISKICK!': Paul Scholes reveals he FLUKED the 'most important' goal of his career against Barcelona... and the Man United legend tips Kylian Mbappe to be the best player in the world as he's got 'more to his game' than Erling Haaland

* Paul Scholes has spoken to Gary Neville on the latest episode of The Overlap
* During the episode he admitted his 'most important' goal was a 'miskick'
* He suggested that his match-winning goal against Barcelona in 2008 was lucky
* Scholes also revealed that he rates Kylian Mbappe above Erling Haaland
* He believes Mbappe is more well-rounded than the Manchester City forward

Paul Scholes has admitted that there was a huge element of luck involved in the 'most important' goal of his career.

The former Manchester United midfielder is the latest sports star to appear on Gary Neville's The Overlap, and was asked about the best goal he ever scored.

After initially plumping for his spectacular volley against Aston Villa in 2006, Scholes was then questioned on whether his goal against Barcelona that sealed United's place in the 2008 Champions League final was also in the mix.

He replied: 'That was a miskick. It was a miskick, it came off the outside of my foot.

'If you're trying to hit it that way with a bit of fade, it should go outside the post and then in the corner really.

Man United legend Paul Scholes spoke to Gary Neville on the latest episode of The Overlap. Scholes admitted his 'most important' goal against Barcelona in 2008 was a 'miskick'

'I was thinking of just hitting the target to be honest with you. When it goes towards the keeper and that way [swerving to the right], you don't mean that, no chance.'

Neville appeared shocked by Scholes' explanation, and asked his ex-team-mate if he would at least concede that it was his most important strike.

'It was the most important, yeah,' Scholes acknowledged.

Scholes was speaking on Neville's 'quickfire questions' section of the episode, where he was also asked about which young star he expected to become the best player in the world.

Scholes thinks Kylian Mbappe is destined to become the best player in the world. Scholes rates Mbappe above Erling Haaland as he feels the Frenchman is more well-rounded

He picked Kylian Mbappe over Erling Haaland, citing the Frenchman's overall skillset as the difference between the duo.

'I'd go Mbappe. I think there's more to his game [than Haaland's]. He's not just an out-and-out centre forward, is he?' Scholes said.

Haaland has hit the ground running at Manchester City this season, scoring 14 goals in nine games, whereas Mbappe has 10 in nine for PSG, but Scholes still gives the edge to the latter.

'He [Mbappe] can go wide, he can dribble past people, he's quick, he can play one-twos. Haaland's f****** amazing, don't get me wrong, but he is [just] a goalscorer, isn't he?' he added.
