Default Re: Manchester United Director of Football

Manchester United 'to resume search for a director of football with Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta and Juventus supremo Fabio Paratici' under consideration from Ed Woodward

* Manchester United are reportedly restarting the search for a director of football
* Ed Woodward considered hiring somebody before but put the search on hold
* He wants somebody to come and work within the current management structure
* They will help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with recruitment rather than be in charge
* Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta and Fabio Paratici of Juventus are targets

Manchester United will resume their search for a director of football with Ed Woodward reportedly keen to appoint either Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta or Fabio Paratici of Juventus.

Woodward has considered hiring someone to oversee football operations before but gave up, only for him to decide to now restart the hunt in the coming months.

According to The Telegraph, Berta is among those highly-regarded in the role who could be tempted to move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward is set to restart his search for a director of football. Woodward is keen on either Atletico Madrid's Andrea Berta or Fabio Paratici (R) of Juventus

Berta (pictured) has helped Diego Simeone turn Atletico Madrid into one of Europe's top clubs

Other targets include Paratici and Antero Henrique, who is currently without a job after leaving Paris Saint-Germain a year ago.

United have also previously been linked to Red Bull's footballing guru Ralf Rangnick.

It is claimed the position would be 'wide-ranging' and involve working in areas such as recruitment, the club's training ground and the development of women's football.

Although Woodward has decided the club would benefit from a director of football he is no rush to hire and has not whittle down a list of candidates.

It is claimed the executive vice-chairman is focused on completing this season and handling the financial problems brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The director of football will not be tasked with altering the culture of the club, like Monchi has done at Sevilla for example, but to assist manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the existing management structure.

United's recruitment was abysmal in the year since Sir Alex Ferguson left but Solskjaer has done well in the transfer market in recent windows, bringing in the likes of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Bruno Fernandes.

The director of football would 'work with the current set-up of Solskjaer, his coaches, scouts, data analysts and Matt Judge', the club's chief negotiator.

Their first big challenge could be to help the club secure the services of England and Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho.

United are known to be keen on bringing him back to the Premier League but their financial power has been reduced by the coronavirus crisis.

Dortmund are willing to let him go for the right figure but Solskjaer knows there are other areas of his squad that need strengthening.

It would be unwise to spend too much on Sancho only for the club to then be unable to improve other areas, such as central defence.

United's recruitment plans will also be dependent on whether or not the club qualify for the Champions League on Sunday.

The Red Devils travel to Leicester on the final day of the Premier League season just one point above the Foxes in the table.

'I can't believe a club does not have this particular position': Sevilla transfer guru Monchi admits his surprise that Manchester United have no director of football as Premier League giants' transfer plans continue to collapse

* Manchester United have endured an extremely frustrating transfer window
* United have only bought Donny van de Beek from Ajax in a £40m deal so far
* The Red Devils have struggled in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho this summer
* Monchi does not understand why United don't have a director of football

Sevilla's transfer chief Monchi is puzzled why a club like Manchester United don't have a sporting director as they continue to falter in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have endured an extremely frustrating summer so far, only signing Donny van de Beek for £40million from Ajax as they continue to stumble in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho - who Borussia Dortmund value at £108million.

United have come under heavy scrutiny for their lack of transfer activity, and are now desperately looking to bring in some new faces despite their priority target still being Sancho, having been linked with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Luka Jovic, Ousmane Dembele and Alex Telles.

Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is in charge of the club's transfers. United continue to stumble in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho

And the well-renowned Monchi cannot understand why United and other European clubs haven't appointed a sporting director - with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward still in charge of the Premier League side's transfer operations.

'This is my opinion - all clubs should have this position,' he told The Telegraph.

'What is the main function? To dedicate the time to everything that relates on a sports level. Where 60-70 per cent of the budget is allocated to the first team, if you don't have a specialist who deals with that, it is very difficult to understand.

'I do understand there are very successful clubs – Manchester United are probably one of the top five in the world, but they do not have that specific position – but I think that clubs more and more are aware that they really need this position and also we are the connection between the technical staff, the squad, the board, we know the *market, we get lots of information through the different scouts.

Monchi admits he doesn't understand why United have not appointed a sporting director. The Red Devils have only signed Donny van de Beek so far in a £40million deal from Ajax

'So, for me, I can't believe a club does not have this particular position. Logically, I have to believe in it because that's what I do. But I do think it's essential.'

In previous years, United have in fact looked at appointing a sporting director, with the likes of Monchi himself, Edwin van der Sar, Erik Stoffelshaus and Paul Mitchell having previously been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

However, nothing has come to fruition and Woodward continues to be the man tasked with looking to bring in fresh faces.

But their transfer activity has flattered to deceive in recent seasons, and once again this summer, while the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have all strengthened considerably.

Manchester United 'are on red alert in their hunt for a director of football' as Ajax duo Edwin van der Sar and Marc Overmars eye new challenges abroad

* Marc Overmars, the Ajax director of football, has now hinted at a new challenge
* Manchester United may be on alert in a bid to overhaul their transfer department
* Overmars and Edwin van der Sar, an Old Trafford legend, may soon leave Ajax

Manchester United have been alerted to a possible new face in their attempts to overhaul their transfer department after a stunning admission from Marc Overmars.

Overmars, the director of football at Ajax, has revealed his desire to take on a new challenge in the near future alongside colleague, and Old Trafford legend, Edwin van der Sar.

The Mirror claim that Overmars, 47, would satisfy United's criteria for the position which will be responsible for transforming their outdated recruitment model.

Manchester United are on red alert after Marc Overmars hinted at a desire for a new challenge. Ed Woodward has been heavily criticised for United's outdated and mixed recruitment record

United have openly looked to recruit a director of football over the last three seasons with criticism levelled at the club after a series of poor, and costly, signings.

Overmars, who played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000, has helped Ajax build and nurture their esteemed policy in the market, as well as their world-renowned youth system.

And his latest comments, which appear to indicate a willingness to move on from Amsterdam, may be taken on board by the United hierarchy.

Edwin van der Sar works alongside Overmars at Ajax and the duo are described as a 'package'. Former Arsenal forward Overmars insisted he and Van der Sar are targeting winning trophies

'When I was appointed in this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years *maximum,' he said.

'I have been here eight seasons now! For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.

'This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the *Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us.

'The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe.'

United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, and chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge, have been forced to bear the brunt of the ire from the club's fanbase after yet another disappointing summer.

A deal for Jadon Sancho failed to materialise, and it was only a slew of deadline day additions which somewhat spared the blushes of the board.

The club do not currently have a director of football, a move which has also sparked confusion with a host of elite European outfits choosing to adopt the method.

It remains to be seen whether Overmars would be interested in the position, or if Van der Sar would be open to return, although the Dutch duo's sights are certainly aimed high.

'We had one shared ambition – we wanted Ajax to reach a European final,' Overmars added. 'Which one did not matter. We managed that in 2017, and now we want more.

'We want to win the Champions League or Europa League.'

Van der Sar holds a boardroom role at Ajax and is understood to have greased the wheels for Donny van de Beek's £40million switch to United in the summer.

Manchester United 'lining up Everton's Marcel Brands' to be their first director of football after struggles in the transfer market with Dutchman's Goodison Park contract up next year

* Marcelo Brands has revamped Everton's recruitment over the past two years
* Dutchman won praise for summer arrivals including James Rodriguez
* His contract at the Goodison Park club comes to an end next summer
* Reports suggest Man United could make him their first director of football
* Italian club Roma are also interested in recruiting highly-regarded Brands

Marcel Brands is reportedly a leading candidate to become Manchester United's first director of football.

United have been considering creating the position for some time following their own recruitment problems under executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

The Dutchman, 58, currently fulfils the role at Everton and has been praised for his recruitment of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure last summer.

His contract with the Goodison Park club expires at the end of the season with Italian club Roma also interested in his services.

According to The Sun, Brands is now being linked with a newly-created director of football post at United and would find an offer hard to refuse.

Brands, who enjoyed a long playing career in the Dutch leagues, had been director of football at RKC Waalwijk, AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven before joining Everton in 2018.

Since then, he has revamped the club's recruitment policy after a number of questionable moves in the transfer market.

Marcel Brands 'is a leading candidate' to become Manchester United's first director of football. Brands has worked with Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti to revamp the club's recruitment. United's transfer business is overseen by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward but there has been talk the club will create a director of football role for some time

Woodward and transfer negotiator Matt Judge have largely overseen United's transfer strategy in recent years but there has been talk of appointing a director of football for some time.

Former United stars Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar have been mentioned in relation to the new director of football role.

Former Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Antero Henrique and ex-Leicester and Everton head of recruitment Steve Walsh have also been linked with a prospective United director of football job.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand has previously been linked with a director of football position at the club should they create one

United's hierarchy have been criticised this year for failing to land prime targets Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, both of Borussia Dortmund, then signing the ageing striker Edinson Cavani close to deadline day.

That came off the back of a number of expensive failures in the market under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's three predecessors as manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez and Morgan Schneiderlin are just three of the players signed at great expense only to flop at Old Trafford.

SOLSKJAER REACTS TO MURTOUGH & FLETCHER NEWS

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reacted to the club promoting John Murtough to football director and Darren Fletcher to technical director.

A statement that was released at 12:00 GMT confirmed the two new roles, which will further strengthen the club’s football operations.

In his press conference to preview our Europa League last-16 match against AC Milan, Solskjaer admitted he has known about the news for some time and is pleased with the ongoing work behind the scenes at the Aon Training Complex.

“Darren will still combine with the coaching, of course, maybe a little bit less on the coaching side,“ said Ole. ”I’m very happy that we’ve made this decision and the announcement.

“Of course, I’ve known about it for a little while. I’ve known John [Murtough] since I came in, he was here when I came. Now it’s more of a formal role, with the job title. He’s still been working behind the scenes and I’ve worked well with him. It’s a cultural fit.

“We know we’re a work in progress. What we’re doing, we just want to improve on and better it. So I’m very happy with what we have. We’ve still got the continuity of the last few years, but have got new ideas and fresh thinking with Fletch, who’s been at the club before and has come back now.”

Asked about how these appointments might affect future transfers, Solskjaer said: “I think everyone involved in world football has been affected by the pandemic and what’s going on, so it’ll be an interesting window, to see how the market responds.

“But for me, the process of our recruitment is still going to be the same, with John and Darren in their new roles. It’s work that we’ve been doing for years now, anyway, with the manager, with the scouting department, with the analysis department. That won’t change at all.

“John, I’ve worked well with him now for years anyway, so we keep in touch more or less every day, or at least a few times every week. The communication is really good, which is very positive. We’re always hoping to add quality to the team, of course.”

Quizzed on what Fletcher will bring, the manager concluded: “A few months back, when we were making a final decision, there were also other things in the pipeline for Darren. We lost, or we moved, Mark Dempsey back down to the Academy, so there was a coaching spot as well.

“If there was one thing I was sure of, that was that we cannot lose Darren; we wanted Darren at Man United. He has the history at the club; he’s been brought up here since he was a young boy to become a Champions League winner and a serial winner. His DNA is what we want.

“Then he went away, so he’s got fresh ideas as well. He’s got the Man United side of it but he’s also been outside with different clubs. He’s got a bright eye for football, a really keen eye for following the development of the youngsters.

“For me, now he can combine these two: a little bit less coaching and have more of an influence on the other side of it. Recruitment maybe; go and speak to players, sell Man United as the club he knows it is.”

Man United SNUB the director of football big names and appoint little-known head of development John Murtough, hired by David Moyes, to the top job... with Darren Fletcher as technical director

* Darren Fletcher will remain as a Man United coach until the end of the season
* John Murtough meanwhile is currently United's head of football development
* Luis Campos, Edwin van der Sar and Paul Mitchell were linked but snubbed
* Matt Judge has become director of football negotiations from chief negotiator

Manchester United have appointed John Murtough as football director and Darren Fletcher as technical director, the club announced today.

Murtough steps up from his job as head of football development at United to fill a role the club have been considering for several years.

Fletcher takes up his new post two months after returning to United as part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching team. The 37-year-old former midfielder, who made more than 340 first-team appearances at Old Trafford, will continue to help out as a coach for the rest of the season.

Murtough (back) therefore steps up from his job as head of football development at United

Ex-United midfielder Fletcher will continue to help out as a coach until the end of the season

Another change sees United's chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge, who previously had the rather incongruous title of head of corporate development, becoming director of football negotiations.

While significant, it's said the appointments will not make a 'material' difference to the day-to-day running of operations at Carrington in what has been described as 'evolution rather than revolution'.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, said: 'These are hugely important appointments that reinforce the progress we have been making as a club in recent years in our relentless pursuit of success.

'We have already made great strides forward in the way we run our football operations, and the benefits are visible in the resurgent pipeline of academy talent reaching the first team and through our improved recruitment record.

'John has been integral to our progress in these areas and his deep understanding of development ensures the club's traditions of bringing young players through from academy to first team will continue. This new position is a natural evolution that harnesses his leadership qualities and his years of experience in the game.

'Darren's stellar achievements as a player and his own journey from academy to Premier League and Champions League winner means he naturally commands respect and understands this vital part of the club's DNA.

'In this new role, the first in our history, he will deliver technical advice across all aspects of the football department as well as contributing to the communication and delivery of our football philosophy across all areas of the club.

'I am delighted that John and Darren have accepted these roles and I look forward to the contribution they will make, together with Ole and the rest of the staff, as we build toward future success.'

WHO IS JOHN MURTOUGH?

John Murtough has stepped up from his job as head of football development at Manchester United to become their football director.

Murtough was brought to United seven years ago by David Moyes from the Premier League, where he was head of elite performance, after the two men worked together at Everton.

He has overseen many of the changes of the first-team and academy structure at United as well as the formation of a women's team.

Seen as 'a fixer' who gets things done but is also open to new ideas, Murtough is already United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's main point of contact at Carrington day-to-day.

He will now be the main contact for other clubs, taking some of the burden off Woodward, as well as the only man who reports directly to the United chief.

Chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge (back centre), has become director of negotiations

United have been looking at the director of football position for some time even though former manager Jose Mourinho made no secret of his opposition to the idea during his time in charge.

Big-name options - including former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, Lille director of football Luis Campos and Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell - were considered from outside the club but United decided to go with internal appointments that would complement the changes made to their infrastructure in terms of recruitment and development.

Murtough was brought to United seven years ago by David Moyes from the Premier League, where he was head of elite performance, after the two men worked together at Everton. He has overseen many of the changes of the first-team and academy structure at United as well as the formation of a women's team.

He will now be the main contact for other clubs, taking some of the burden off Woodward, as well as the only man who reports directly to the United chief.

'This is such an exciting time for everyone at Manchester United with the first team, academy and women's team all performing strongly, and plenty of development still to come,' said Murtough.

'It's a privilege to be part of that process, and an honour to lead Manchester United's football department, working alongside Ole, Casey and so many other truly outstanding staff all dedicated to delivering success to this club.'

Fletcher was brought back to the club at Solskjaer's request with no plans to take on a wider role, but it's understood the Scot has made a huge impression since then.

He will have a longer-term view on the club's planning than Solskjaer, including guiding the futures of the top academy talent.

'It is great to be back with the club and I am delighted to be taking on this new role,' said Fletcher, who won the Champions League, five Premier League titles, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups under Sir Alex Ferguson.

'We are moving in the right direction and I am looking forward to continuing to work with Ole and his coaching team, and now with John as the football director, to help bring young players through and further develop the football side of the club.

'It's fantastic to see that all the staff here are driving Manchester United forward towards a new era of success.'

Manchester United eye ex-Liverpool coach Andy O'Boyle for their new deputy director of football role, with Red Devils hoping he can help John Murtough with the mammoth task of returning the club to its former glory

* Manchester United are on the lookout for a deputy director of football
* The Red Devils are still restructuring their operation at a boardroom level
* Andy O'Boyle is is currently head of elite performance with the Premier League
* The ex-Liverpool coach's background is steeped in sports science, but his general and varied experience is understood to have stood him in good stead

Former Liverpool coach Andy O'Boyle has emerged as a contender for the deputy director of football role at Manchester United.

The Old Trafford club want to appoint someone to assist director John Murtough as they continue to re-shape behind the scenes.

O'Boyle is currently head of elite performance with the Premier League where he helps formulate programmes and initiatives to enhance performance management for things such as fitness testing across the league.

While his background is steeped in sports science, O'Boyle's general and varied experience is understood to have stood him in good stead with the recruitment agency used by United as they assess contenders.

Ex-Liverpool coach Andy O'Boyle is in the frame to be Man United's deputy football director. United feel John Murtough needs help with the sheer size of his role as football director

From Ballymena, Northern Ireland, O'Boyle had a brief spell at United's academy working with nine and 10-year-olds back in 2006 prior to working with Wrexham's first-team then went on to become head of sports science at Coventry City before joining Liverpool in 2011 where he graduated to first-team fitness coach and worked with England's U21s.

United believe Murtough needs help with the scale of the task required to meet demands of returning the club to its former glory.

Murtough and chief executive Richard Arnold are working through United's managerial candidates over the coming days as they look to reach a decision on their next boss by the end of the month.

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is emerging as a leading contender. He is ready to leave his club regardless at the end of this season with assistant Mitchell van der Graag. United are reluctant to pay large sums in compensation though PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino and Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel are also under consideration.
