Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United are braced for a 'good fight' against Italian giants AC Milan in the last-16 of the Europa League... as he praises 'incredible' Zlatan Ibrahimovic ahead of veteran striker's Old Trafford return

* Manchester United were drawn against AC Milan in the Europa League last-16
* Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that his team are relishing the showdown
* Former United ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic will make his Old Trafford return for the tie
* Solskjaer praised the experienced frontman's influence as he impresses in Italy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted Manchester United are prepared for a 'good fight' against AC Milan in their Europa League last-16 tie - and also hailed the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic ahead of his Old Trafford return.

After United sailed beyond Real Sociedad in the previous round, thanks to their 4-0 first leg triumph in Turin, Serie A title contenders Milan were pitted against them in another testing tie.

And, ahead of the two historic clubs facing each other competitively for the first time since 2010, Solskjaer explained that he is relishing the clash and the chance to reunite with former United players.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted Manchester United are braced for a 'good fight' against AC Milan

'It feels like a Champions League game, which is good,' Solskjaer said. 'It's important for our team to always have that demand and don't feel that it's a given.

'Milan, they're on the up. They've done really well this season and they've got some former friends of ours.

'The tradition and the history of the club is fantastic. We're looking forward to it, definitely.'

Ibrahimovic, 39, scored 29 goals in 53 games for United during his memorable two-year spell in the Premier League.

The experienced ace also helped steer them to Europa League glory in 2017, under former boss Jose Mourinho, in the club's last taste of silverware.

After his short stay with LA Galaxy in MLS, Ibrahimovic returned to Europe and is continuing to catch the eye with Milan - having netted 27 times for them so far.

Solskjaer didn't hold back in his glowing praise of the evergreen frontman, adding: 'It's incredible what he's done.

United eased into the next round of the competition after beating Real Sociedad on aggregate. United will take on Milan for the first time in Europe since their 2010 Champions League clash

'When we think back, when he was here with a career-threatening injury, the way he's come back, the way he's played.

'He's moved AC Milan towards the top of the league again.

'And of course, Diogo (Dalot) is there. We know that we're in for a good fight.'

Milan reached the next stage of the competition after edging beyond Red Star Belgrade on away goals - and are four points adrift of top spot in Serie A.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will miss his return to Manchester United next week after picking up thigh injury... with the Swedish forward set to attend an Italian music festival instead!

* Zlatan Ibrahimovic won't play in AC Milan's trip to Manchester United next week
* The Swedish striker was taken off with an abductor injury in Milan's trip to Rome
* But, he is said to be fit enough to be a guest star on Italy’s biggest song contest
* He had signed up to appear at the Sanremo Music Festival before his injury

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been ruled out of a return to Old Trafford with AC Milan next week by injury — but he is fit enough to be a guest star on Italy’s biggest song contest.

The 39-year-old Swede was set to face Manchester United for the first time since leaving three years ago after Milan drew his old club in the last 16 of the Europa League.

However, Ibrahimovic suffered a thigh injury in Sunday’s 2-1 win over Roma in Serie A and limped off after 56 minutes.

He will be assessed again on March 11 — the day of the first leg against United at Old Trafford — and is now battling to be available for the return leg at the San Siro a week later.

The injury has solved a rather awkward problem for Ibrahimovic and Milan after it emerged that he had signed up to appear at the Sanremo Music Festival on the Italian Riviera, which gets underway on Tuesday and runs until Saturday.

It is understood the striker and his agent Mino Raiola negotiated the agreement into the contract extension he signed with Milan in August.

Ibrahimovic was set to train on his own in Sanremo this week around Milan’s games against Udinese on Wednesday and Verona on Sunday, before taking part in preparations for the first leg against United a week on Thursday.

The issue has been a cause of some embarrassment for Milan, but Ibrahimovic’s enforced lay-off means he is now free to spend the week at Sanremo, one of Italy’s most popular TV events.

It is unclear exactly what he is doing at the festival, although Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic has fuelled rumours that the two friends will perform a duet.

‘The two things I do least well are singing and dancing,’ said Mihajlovic last week. ‘Ibra is also a terrible singer — at least we’ll make people laugh.’

Ibrahimovic scored 29 goals in 53 games for United and helped the club win the Europa League and League Cup under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

However, he suffered knee ligament damage in a quarter-final against Anderlecht that ultimately cut short his Old Trafford career.

The former Inter, Juventus and Barcelona star made only seven more appearances — and two starts — on his return from the injury before joining LA Galaxy as a free agent.

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli claims Manchester United 'were the RIGHT opponent for us' as he hails his side for 'giving their soul' after clinching late away goal to seal 1-1 draw in first leg of Europa League last-16 tie

* Manchester United have it all to do at AC Milan to seal progression in Europe
* Milan scored an injury-time goal to earn a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Thursday
* Stefano Pioli has admitted United were the perfect opponents for his Milan side

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli claimed he thought Manchester United would the perfect opponent for his side when the two teams were drawn against each other in the Europa League round of 16.

Pioli's Milan side clinched an injury-time equaliser at Old Trafford on Thursday to seal a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the Europa League tie, meaning United have it all to do if they want to qualify for the quarter finals.

Amad Diallo put United ahead with a fantastic header - his first goal for the club - but Simon Kjaer popped up with a last-gasp equaliser from a corner to give Milan the slight advantage heading into the second leg at San Siro next week.

And Pioli has since hailed his side's personality after they stuck at it to land what could be a decisive blow on the Red Devils.

Pioli told Sky Sport Italia: 'The team played with personality. We suffered in the difficult moments. We knew they have quality, but this performance must boost our self-confidence.

'When we were drawn with Manchester United I though they were the right opponent for us.

'We are working to improve and try to win again. We want to take Milan where we belong and these are the games where you can improve.

'We want to go all the way through and to do so we have to beat these teams. Today's result is positive, but we have another tough game ahead. The job is not done. They are a great team.

United have it all to do next week if they want to reach the Europa League quarter-finals

'I am satisfied. I keep repeating I am not training a regular group. This is an extraordinary group, under any aspect.

'When I see the lads give their soul to get a good result, I can only be happy. It's probably a result we would have accepted before the game. After it, I can say we may deserve something more, but it's a good result.'

AC Milan had the chances to punish United further on Thursday and in fact they almost went ahead in the 11th minute when Franck Kessie harshly had his volley disallowed for a handball.

And Pioli has since revealed that Kessie is convinced that it wasn't a handball at Old Trafford.

'That goal would have given us more strength, especially on a mental level,' Pioli added. 'Franck is convinced he didn't touch the ball with his hand, but the referee thought otherwise.'
