Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Paul Pogba will be unleashed as a No 10 with more freedom to do what he likes when Manchester United attack... but how will Bruno Fernandes and Co work with the fit-again Frenchman in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's new-look line-up?

* Paul Pogba will be match fit when Manchester United return against Tottenham
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have had to find a new position for the midfielder
* He will play him as a No 10, reportedly, with Bruno Fernandes also in the side

Beyond sorting out food deliveries, figuring out which Netflix series to binge next and scheduling his mandatory walk, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have had one big question on his mind during lockdown.

How, exactly, would he fit Paul Pogba back into his side?

The return of the Premier League was always likely to coincide with the Frenchman's return to full fitness and for Solskjaer, that was something of an issue.

Manchester United were on form before football was suspended, with January arrival Bruno Fernandes impressing in their midfield.

Around him, the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay were also playing well, while Nemanja Matic had filled in when called upon by the Norwegian. Pogba has spent this time on the sidelines, recovering from a long-running ankle issue that has been a problem all season.

But Pogba was never going to be left in reserve when he became available again. Whatever the doubts are over his attitude or performances during stages of his Old Trafford career, this is a World Cup winner and an asset in his prime years.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has earmarked Paul Pogba for a role as a No 10. The impressive form of Bruno Fernandes means a decision had to be made over his new role. Pogba has spent a lot of the season on the sidelines yet is an important asset for United. Solskjaer will have had to give a lot of thought to where he could play the midfielder

Solskjaer now seems to have a solution. In an attempt to get him working with Fernandes, who has a similar profile to him, he is going to move Pogba into attacking midfield.

The 27-year-old played behind the striker as a No 10 during an intra-squad friendly at Old Trafford last weekend.

While he is still working on his fitness, having not played since Boxing Day, Solskjaer is said to have been impressed with Pogba in that role.

Others have called on him to play there in the past. Paul Parker said in 2018: 'The game comes very easy to Pogba and I just wonder, if long-term, he might be better suited in the No 10 role, where he can do what he likes more or less in that final part of the pitch.

'Pogba's at his best when he can be creative and make things happen going forward. Remove the shackles and get him in positions where he can go at players one versus one, or has the freedom to run in behind and ask questions of the opposition defence that way.'

It is a role that he has played before, although not necessarily to the greatest success at United.

In truth, it diminishes what he is best at. Pogba can drive the ball from deep – although not defensive midfield – which is why France use him on the left side of a three.

His ability to break through defensive lines with his dribbling rather than passing means he is better in central midfield.

Pogba does not have the numbers to back him up as a No 10 during his time at United. But he impressed in that role during an intra-squad friendly at Old Trafford at the weekend

There is a notion that being a No 10 gives him more freedom – but he performs better when he's given that while further back in midfield.

It is why he is such a success for France. With N'Golo Kante alongside him as a water-carrier and Blaise Matuidi having defensive nous, it means that while he is in a midfield three, Pogba can burst forward and join attacks.

He also, quite simply, does not have the numbers to make him a suitable No 10. In his time at United, he has only created 1.81 chances per 90 mins. Compare that to Fernandes, who has 2.21. Other No 10s in Juan Mata and the departed Henrikh Mkhitaryan managed more.

The other question is whether Pogba moving forward will diminish the new boy. Fernandes has been playing in an attacking midfield role, with Fred, McTominay and Matic filling spots behind him.

It has worked. He has been a creative force and scored three in nine games.

Solskjaer himself has spotted how well the Portuguese works with his preferred No 9: 'He's working hard and for me Anthony (Martial) was on the way to his best season at Manchester United so let's see if he finishes it off and kicks on again.

'Tony and Bruno [Fernandes] have hit it off together so it's a partnership that we hope can flourish.

'We knew he was a quality player and knew that when he came in he would have an impact straight away but you never know if he's going to settle early in a new country but he's taken to it like a duck to water.'

The risk is cutting that short unnaturally. If the uptick in form has been dependent on that partnership, moving Fernandes back could see them drop off again.

Then again, football teams are finely balanced and the return of Marcus Rashford on the left could give them back any edge they lose. He has recovered from his back injury and was doing well in the early stages of the campaign.

Fred has impressed enough to be given a place beside Fernandes, and, slyly, he is probably United's best defensive-minded midfielder these days.

No player in the side who has featured in more than five league games has managed to win possession more times than his 9.81 per 90 minutes.

In fact, Fred might be able to replicate Kante's role. The Chelsea man has managed to win the ball back less than the Brazilian, at 8.58 per 90 minutes.

Further up the pitch, on the right, Mason Greenwood has been a useful addition from the academy this season.

Pogba will be surrounded by quality and if he plays well there, the team could flourish.

Solskjaer has previously discussed pairing Pogba and Fernandes: 'We have an exciting squad. Bruno coming in and making the impact he made was great for everyone, it was a boost for the club.

'Good players can always play together, so yes Paul and Bruno can certainly.

'We will find a good connection between them, we have discussed it as a coaching team.'

If the discussion has led to this solution and Pogba has shown he suits it, then Spurs will need to be prepared for a new look United next Friday.

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Missing out on Champions League football is not worth thinking about for Manchester United... from failing to lure Jadon Sancho to seeing their lucrative adidas deal slashed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side MUST return to Europe's top table next season

* Manchester United are currently set to miss out on Champions League football
* Ole Gunnar's Solskjaer's men are sat fifth, behind both Chelsea and Leicester
* United will miss out on Jadon Sancho should they fail to secure a top-four spot
* The club will also see their lucrative adidas kit deal significantly reduced
* They could still qualify by winning the Europa League, but that is a risky passage

In February, Manchester United reassured investors they would qualify for the Champions League ahead of next season.

It felt, at the time, like kicking a can - or rather, a grenade - down the road. Only now, over the course of the next 11 days, will we discover if the pin remains in place.

For should Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team fail to make a return to Europe's elite competition, then the financial fallout will have the impact of a detonation.

And this just at a time when there are signs of recovery on the pitch, of a team capable of competing once again at the continent's top table.

There is, of course, the safety net of the Europa League next month, where victory would offer a backdoor into the Champions League.

But they will want to get the job done on domestic shores first, especially as that would afford extra time to press ahead with what are ambitious plans in the transfer market. Jadon Sancho, for example, will only sign for United from Borussia Dortmund this summer if there is the guarantee of Champions League football.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer simply must lead his team into the Champions League next season. However, United currently sit fifth in the table, and are outside of the qualification places

That £109million deal will also be dependent on the club being able to afford it. It is thought United will look to offload the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jesse Lingard to fund part of their close-season business, but their bargaining power on those sales is immediately lessened if their need for the cash is increased.

But then there are the unavoidable consequences of another campaign in the Europa League. Kit sponsors adidas have a clause in their contract that would see United lose £25m of the £75m deal they signed in 2015.

The club's latest financial figures for 2019 showed that revenues dropped by £67m, largely because of their Champions League absence, which is said to account for £50m in lost prize money and TV income.

Missing out yet again would be a sizeable blow to Ed Woodward and his big plans for United. Jadon Sancho would refuse a move to Old Trafford if there is no Champions League football

But that amount would likely edge towards three figures down on 2018 given the added losses incurred by the coronavirus pandemic, not to mention a reduction in the club's commercial appeal.

That is why events of the past few days have increased the pressure on those players charged with protecting and strengthening the club's financial future.

Monday's decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to overturn Manchester City's Champions League ban - and so removing the comfort of fifth position being enough for qualification - was followed by United surrendering a lead in stoppage-time at home to Southampton.

All of a sudden they are back on the outside peering in on the Champions League places. A final-day trip to Leicester, currently in fourth, already has the feel of a winner-takes-all shootout.

Miss out on the top four and the conclusion of the Europa League becomes about far more than a piece of silverware.

United are as good as into the last eight following their 5-0 win over LASK Linz in their last-16 first leg, but rivals such as Inter, Bayer Leverkusen and Wolves means passage to the trophy will be no formality.

Another year outside the Champions League would, of course, keep their wage bill in check given that player bonuses would not be incurred.

But there will be a far greater price to pay for that should the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford become agitated by missing out on Europe's premier tournament.

It is why the team must now come good on Ed Woodward's previous statement of intent to the club's investors. If the pin pops, the fallout will be far-reaching.

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Jadon Sancho offers star quality to make Man United title challengers again if they can agree a deal with Dortmund... but would his arrival leave Mason Greenwood on the bench or speed up his switch to centre forward? And what about Martial and Rashford?

* Manchester United are threatening to pull out of a deal to sign Jadon Sancho
* Any move for him is big as United look to challenge for the Premier League title
* Their return to the Champions League next season means star quality is needed
* But 18-year-old star Mason Greenwood could be pushed out despite top season
* Both players - and Daniel James - would be competing for right forward place
* However, Greenwood may be able to move back to natural centre forward role

Put yourself in Mason Greenwood's boots for a moment. You've had an absolutely superb breakthrough season for the club you adore.

Seventeen goals in all competitions including double figures in the Premier League, equalling a record set by no less than Wayne Rooney and still the chance to finish it all by winning the Europa League.

But just as you are congratulating yourself on the perfect year, all the newspaper headlines and sports news bulletins report that Manchester United are looking to land Jadon Sancho... who plays in your position.

Manchester United have made Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jadon Sancho a priority signing. His arrival will leave manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoilt for choice in the attacking positions. But Sancho's arrival could leave Mason Greenwood sidelined despite a breakthrough season

Of course, the rumours that Sancho is bound for Old Trafford have been swirling for months now so Greenwood has had plenty of time to come to terms with the fresh competition within the squad. The latest is that United could well pull out of a deal with Dortmund digging their heels in over a £108million fee.

But should current obstacles be navigated and Sancho does make the switch to Old Trafford, it is inevitable that Greenwood's spot in the side would be jeopardised.

It can be argued that the 18-year-old has certainly done everything in his power to make a statement to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he deserves to keep his place with the new campaign coming around quickly.

But Greenwood will also understand how things work at United. Solskjaer has made no secret of his ambitions to restore the club to title contenders and that requires the best of the best.

With Champions League football restored for next season, it looks like United have gone out and splashed the necessary cash to recruit Solskjaer's No 1 summer transfer target.

Sancho, who with 20 goals and 20 assists for Borussia Dortmund enjoyed another outstanding season, represents an upgrade on pretty much any player in that position anywhere in the world.

At 20, he's only two years older than Greenwood and is two years younger than Daniel James, the other United option for the right side of the forward line. Sancho won't be budging anytime soon if the transfer is completed.

Sancho is arguably the world's best player in his position and will bring United star quality. He would arrive at Old Trafford following an exceptional season for Borussia Dortmund

So what does this mean for Greenwood? Is the teenager really doomed to spend the whole of next season on the substitutes' bench? Or is there another role that he can perform?

The first thing to point out is that Sancho is versatile. He played predominantly on the right for Dortmund but for a portion of last season was deployed on the left.

In certain late season games he occupied a more central role alongside Julian Brandt as Dortmund played a narrower attack in a 3-4-2-1.

So Sancho may not necessarily be treading on Greenwood's toes. It may be his England colleague Marcus Rashford, usually on the left for United, who finds himself looking over his shoulder.

This versatility offers Solskjaer the luxury of choice. The United boss has shown his tactical acumen, especially in games against bigger teams. There will be an element of surprise and players can rotate positions in game.

But there's also a pecking order at United and, unfortunately for Greenwood, logic dictates that Rashford is the more senior player and takes precedence. Sancho, with his £108m price tag, goes right above him as well.

It could be Marcus Rashford looking over his shoulder with Sancho versatile across the attack

So Greenwood may struggle to match the 2,412 minutes of first-team game time he has enjoyed this season, while James, himself a new arrival only a year ago, will almost certainly struggle to beat his 2,918 minutes.

United's elevation to the Champions League will also limit their chances. The beauty of the Europa League is that Solskjaer was able to heavily rotate his team all through the group stage and even now in the last-16.

A fringe side will play against LASK in what is the second leg of the last-16 on Wednesday night with United basking in all the certainties of a 5-0 first leg advantage.

But next season, instead of Astana, Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar in the group, United will be confronted with higher quality opposition. The likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Sancho will be playing full-time in Europe.

And with an attack of Rashford, Fernandes and Sancho behind centre forward Anthony Martial, Solskjaer will certainly feel confident of going deep in the Champions League.

Perhaps the key for Greenwood will come in adapting his position. On most of the occasions he has played at centre forward for United this season, he has delivered. There was the 4-0 home win over Norwich City in January, the 6-0 FA Cup rout of Tranmere Rovers and the first leg against LASK in Austria to name some examples.

Greenwood has enjoyed a superb campaign, scoring 17 times for United's senior team. Greenwood, 18, usually delivers when Solskjaer plays him in his natural centre forward role. He was on target in the first leg of United's Europa League last-16 tie against LASK in March

So maybe Solskjaer sees Greenwood's long-term future as a centre forward and Sancho's arrival may accelerate this change. Or, more accurately, change back.

All through his time in United's academy, that's where Greenwood played. Last season he scored 15 in 13 in the Under-18 Premier League and five in five in the UEFA Youth League from his strongest position.

It's only actually because of needs must in the first team that he's been shifted out wide and you can see from Greenwood's finishing ability - both feet, picking out corners with incredible accuracy - that he's a born centre forward.

Others are inclined to agree. Glenn Hoddle said a few weeks ago that Greenwood will one day push Rashford out of the United team because he's a 'far better clinical finisher.'

Alan Shearer has made the prediction that by the time Euro 2020 comes around next year, Greenwood will be in the England squad.

And the youngster really does have the perfect tutor in Solskjaer, the man who built his career on reading the ricochets around the penalty box, always being in the right place at the right time to poach goals.

Daniel James, who can also play on the right side, may also see Sancho reduce his game time

So in that case it's Martial who may well have to move aside. That sounds crazy at the moment because the Frenchman has been in blistering form since football's resumption, scoring six times.

But he's been inconsistent with his form in the past and previous managers have pondered whether he's worth indulging.

Solskjaer seems to have got the best out of him for the time being but in the long-term there's every chance Greenwood could replace Martial and save United millions in the transfer market.

With some clever man-management, Solskjaer can rotate the pair of them next season depending on the opposition and the circumstances.

There will be the usual injury issues and fatigue will be more of a worry than ever given that nobody is getting much pre-season down time. With the exception of Sancho, as it happens.

Anthony Martial has found some of his best form for United since football resumed

Many United fans will feel discomfort that a mega-money signing like Sancho will block the progress of an academy graduate.

The club prides itself on developing quality young talent and Solskjaer embraces this.

The fact that Sancho spent some of his formative years up the road at Manchester City makes this even more complex.

But while on the surface Sancho's arrival looks like bad news for Greenwood, it could actually speed up a transition to a deadly centre forward that will happen eventually anyway.

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Does Paul Pogba still get in Manchester United's best XI? Solskjaer still doesn't know what his strongest team is or whether a certain World Cup winner should play... so Sportsmail's experts give him a hand

* Paul Pogba's spot in the Manchester United starting XI has divided opinion
* There are questions whether he can play alongside Bruno Fernandes in midfield
* Sportsmail's experts Chris Sutton, Micah Richards, Ian Ladyman and Chris Wheeler discuss whether the Frenchman deserves to start for the Red Devils

Paul Pogba made all the headlines for the wrong reasons on Sunday when he was at fault for giving away the game-winning penalty in Manchester United's 1-0 defeat by Arsenal.

The have long been questions how the Frenchman fits into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team at Old Trafford, especially when it comes to playing alongside the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek.

But does he still get into United's best XI? Here, Sportsmail's experts of Chris Sutton, Micah Richards, Ian Ladyman and Chris Wheeler give their insight into how the Red Devils should line up.

There have been questions whether Paul Pogba deserves to start for Manchester United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still doesn't know what his strongest XI is after 100 games in charge

CHRIS SUTTON

At least Manchester United are consistent at being inconsistent. They’ll lose to Crystal Palace one week, beat Brighton the next. Concede six to Tottenham, then put four past Newcastle.

Defeat Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig on the European stage, but become the first Big Six side to lose at home to Arsenal since 2015.

The system I’d opt for is 4-2-3-1. David de Gea over Dean Henderson in goal — I’ve been critical of the Spaniard in the past, but he has not dropped any clangers of late.

A solid back four. A midfield pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay — the same screen which protected the back line against PSG. That means there is no room for Paul Pogba.

A fine talent he may be, but I prefer my midfield to provide defensive stability. Bruno Fernandes is my No 10. On his left is Marcus Rashford, and on his right is Mason Greenwood.

That leaves Anthony Martial as my main striker, completing a winning combination which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ended the last season using.

Chris Sutton would opt for Fred and Scott McTominay to start in a 4-2-3-1

MICAH RICHARDS

What a challenge! This has actually made me have sympathy for Solskjaer, as I sat trying to come up with 11 names and trying to put them into a workable formation. Once I thought I had the team cracked, I’d scribble it out and start again. Thank goodness I’m not a manager.

Manchester United’s best XI? You would assume De Gea would be an automatic pick but I found myself wrestling with Henderson’s name over and over again. De Gea did nothing wrong against Arsenal and gets my vote but, be sure, Henderson’s time is coming soon.

Once the goalkeeper was out of the way, I immediately thought of a back four. Then I went to a back three, with wing backs. But I changed my mind as that wouldn’t suit Aaron Wan-Bissaka, so it was a back four again.

There are goals in my front three, I’m sure of it. The biggest puzzle was midfield. The more I tried, the less I could find a space for Donny van de Beek. So I have gone for experience — Nemanja Matic holding with Fernandes and Pogba in front.

Micah Richards believes United work best if Pogba is a part of a three-man midfield with Matic and Bruno Fernandes in a 4-3-3 formation

IAN LADYMAN

‘Bruno at double as Reds run riot’ was the headline in these pages on July 1. The night before United had beaten Brighton 3-0 as part of a run that saw Solskjaer’s team win six and draw three of their last nine Premier League games.

That was a United team running hot on confidence and that night against Brighton the front three of Rashford, Greenwood and Martial were devastating.

For the first time in a long time, United were benefitting from a settled side and it baffles me that Solskjaer has now drifted away from that this season.

He once again seems totally confused about whether to play Pogba and if so, where.

This has enabled McTominay and Fred to infiltrate the starting 11 again and that is not a good sign. Both are honest players but have clear limitations.

Pogba often does not help himself but he showed at the end of last term that he CAN play as part of a holding duo — even if he doesn’t particularly want to. Solskjaer found his winning formula in the summer and he should go back to it now.

Solskjaer should go back to his winning formula where Pogba sat behind Fernandes in midfield

CHRIS WHEELER

Team selection and formation counts for nothing if the consistency and intensity aren’t there, as Manchester United have discovered to their cost.

Still, Solskjaer has yet to find a system that gets the best out of his players, and midfield is a particular problem.

Not surprisingly, Pogba is at the root of it.

I would persevere for now and use Pogba in the more advanced role he wants, sitting alongside Fernandes in support of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood.

It does mean there is only one holding midfielder and the much-improved Fred gets the nod ahead of McTominay and Matic.

I would compensate for the loss of defensive midfield cover by playing Axel Tuanzebe alongside Harry Maguire at centre back; an excellent defender who is more than capable of making up for his lack of first-team experience at United.

No 2 goalkeeper Henderson and new signing Alex Telles are on the bench, but both could come into the reckoning.

Chris Wheeler believes Pogba should be used in a more advanced role, sitting alongside Fernandes in support of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood up top

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is running out of time to get it right... Manchester United have gone TWO months without an open-play goal at home and are overly cautious, but if he starts Cavani and switches to a 4-3-3 then it could finally unlock their potential

* Manchester United laboured to a 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday night
* It took a re-taken Bruno Fernandes penalty to earn three points at Old Trafford
* It's been two months since United scored from open play at home in the league
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side continue to lack potency when going forward
* Anthony Martial looked effective when moved out wide with Edinson Cavani on
* Solskjaer was rightly criticised for playing two holding midfielders on Saturday

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United continue to be an enigma.

They haven't scored a Premier League goal from open play at Old Trafford for two months and yet scored four from open play in one match at the same venue against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

They scored four times away from home against Newcastle and three goals at each of Brighton and Everton, yet somehow find scoring in their own backyard nigh on impossible.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was just left with more problems to solve despite the win over West Brom. It required a re-taken penalty from Bruno Fernandes to split the teams at Old Trafford

Solskjaer's United relish tearing apart teams on the counter-attack but, for all their fabulous attacking options, seem stumped when confronted with a five-man defence sitting deep.

It should be said that Saturday night's 1-0 home win over West Bromwich Albion, their first league win at Old Trafford since July 4, could have been far more emphatic.

Baggies goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who spent nine years as a United player, made a string of outstanding saves and was beaten only by a re-taken Bruno Fernandes penalty.

But that's precisely the problem. United should have been out of sight, but didn't take the many chances that came their way.

At other times, as Solskjaer acknowledged afterwards, they over-complicated their passing in promising situations.

It explains why they seem to be reliant on penalties to get their goals at Old Trafford - in the Premier League at least.

Victory over West Brom buys Solskjaer a little more time but his job won't be fully safe until United's attacking verve is restored and they put teams out of sight on a consistent basis.

Marcus Rashford has seven goals so far this season - three coming against Leipzig - but Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood are struggling for form, with just two goals apiece and none in the league.

The attacking swagger that marked United's performances post-restart in June has vanished.

And Solskjaer again went for the belt and braces of two holding midfielders - Nemanja Matic and Fred - against a West Brom side 18th in the table. Why?

Paul Pogba missed Saturday's match with an ankle injury but looks increasingly a spare part, while Donny van de Beek again had to be satisfied with an appearance off the bench.

In order to save his job, it may be that Solskjaer needs to make changes to his system or certainly in how existing personnel are deployed. Here are a few potential tweaks.

MARTIAL OUT WIDE, CAVANI IN

Martial has led United's line for a long time now, especially in the 4-2-3-1 set-up that Solskjaer favours.

But on Saturday, he was the picture of frustration as the centre forward as Branislav Ivanovic, Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi kept him completely shackled.

However, when Edinson Cavani came on for Juan Mata in the 62nd minute, Martial was moved out to the left side and was suddenly able to cause problems with his direct runs and skilful feet.

Edinson Cavani was sharp and determined to make an impact when he came on for United

So why not start Martial on one of the wings permanently and have Cavani, who has looked sharp in his handful of appearances since arriving at United, play up front?

Martial would surely be more effective if able to run and take on defenders with the option to cut inside and shoot, while Cavani finds pockets of space inside the box.

Cavani was often made to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Paris Saint-Germain and was shunted out wide when his best position is as a centre forward.

Anthony Martial should be moved out wide where he can run at defenders and cut inside

Restored to that role, there's every chance he would flourish and if the 33-year-old runs out of ideas, Solskjaer could replace him with Greenwood.

The difficulty is what then happens to Rashford, the in-form forward who usually plays on the left. But he has played on the right side at times in his career, or Martial could play out on the right.

It would offer United two speedy forwards out wide plus a real goal poacher in the middle.

One potential alternative for United would be to move Martial to a wide position and have Cavani leading the attack

THREE UP FRONT WITH FERNANDES PULLING THE STRINGS

Solskjaer seldom strays from his 4-2-3-1 formation, believing it offers United the right balance.

But surely in matches against lesser opposition, he could set up in a 4-2-1-3 and rely on his lethal front line to score enough times to settle the contest.

When United host Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League on Tuesday night, for example, surely they could play with that Rashford-Cavani-Martial forward three with a three-man midfield behind.

Solskjaer played both Fred (left) and Nemanja Matic (right) as holding midfielders on Saturday

Fernandes would be the most advanced midfielder, pulling the strings and threading passes. Pogba or Van de Beek as the No 8 linking defence and attack, with an industrious holding midfielder like Matic, Fred or Scott McTominay shielding the back four when required.

Pogba has never been a fan of defensive responsibility but in certain games, he could work in tandem with Fernandes to unpick a massed defence. Rashford and Martial would offer width and direct running to unsettle the defenders.

The midfield remains a challenge for Solskjaer. How best to accommodate Pogba, Van de Beek and Fernandes into essentially the same role while keeping everyone satisfied.

He cannot play all three because his side would be too unbalanced towards attack, which means leaving at least one on the bench and allowing frustration to build up.

The personnel need depends completely on the opposition, but the conservatism of playing two defensive midfielders against the likes of West Brom is surely part of the reason United are lacking fluency.

If United switched to a 4-3-3 formation, a front three of Rashford, Cavani and Martial has the potential to cause major problems, with Fernandes and Van de Beek supplying

REPEAT THE LEIPZIG FORMULA

That five-goal thrashing of RB Leipzig remains United's best attacking display of the season by a considerable distance. But it all begs the question - why in that game but not all the others?

Obviously it helped that Leipzig came to Old Trafford wanting to give it a go, allowing United to repeatedly pick them off on the counter.

But Solskjaer did set his team up slightly differently that night - with a midfield diamond - and it certainly worked. On the flip side, he did the same thing against Arsenal a few days later and it failed miserably.

The midfield diamond that proved so effective against Leipzig was a failure against Arsenal

We will likely see the diamond again, however, before too long.

It relies on two forwards - Martial and Greenwood against Leipzig, with Rashford scoring a hat-trick off the bench, or Rashford and Greenwood against Arsenal.

Any combination could be used really, including playing Cavani, with Fernandes behind them at the 'tip' of the diamond. The players behind them would depend on the opposition.

Maybe for weaker opponents, both Pogba and Van de Beek could play with Matic at the base. For stronger teams, replace one of Pogba or Van de Beek with Fred or McTominay for that added cover.

If this set-up worked so spectacularly against a team of Leipzig's quality, you would imagine more often than not it will have a similar impact in the future.

In certain games, the midfield diamond could make use of Fernandes, Pogba and Van de Beek with two speedy strikers up top

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

We're sticking with Solskjaer, kicking out Paul Pogba and dropping David De Gea... Sportsmail's experts on how they would solve Manchester United's issues after Champions League exit

* Manchester United were dumped out of the Champions League on Tuesday
* Their loss to Red Bull Leipzig has heaped pressure back on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* There are problems involving Paul Pogba, David de Gea and a leaky defence
* Sportsmail's experts answer the big questions surrounding the club currently

After Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday night following a 3-2 defeat at RB Leipzig , the inquest has begun.

It's very much been a case of two steps forward, one step back for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side this season, amid problems of consistency all over the pitch.

Sportsmail's experts analyse what needs to change as United focus on the Premier League heading into the festive period, starting with the Manchester derby against rivals City on Saturday night.

Manchester United slumped to defeat against RB Leipzig on a dismal night for the Red Devils. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday evening

1) STICKING WITH OLE?

CHRIS SUTTON: Stick with him for now. There’s no denying this European exit is a massive disappointment, especially given how they started Group H with two wins.

The problem is United are so erratic. It’s triumph or disaster. It’s Ole in, Ole out. Win, and he’s The Chosen One. Lose, and he’s The Chump.

Let’s give Solskjaer the benefit of the doubt for the time being. United finished third in the Premier League last season. Settle on a system, an XI, and try to achieve that again.

IAN LADYMAN: Yeah, I agree. I’m sticking with Ole. Not because he is a manager who can win the Premier League for United. He isn’t. Not now. Not ever. But United have had four managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and they must get the next appointment right.

Solskjaer is capable of getting United in the top four, especially in a season when we may well see a blanket finish. So nothing disastrous will happen with the Norwegian in charge.

United should stick with Solskjaer despite their surprising exit from the Champions League

What United must do is use the time wisely to plan the succession. And that must come next summer. Mauricio Pochettino remains the obvious candidate to take over. Presuming he wants to, of course.

CHRIS WHEELER: There are concerns over Solskjaer’s ability to be a world-class coach, and those will only have deepened after Leipzig. But the chaos at United post-Ferguson has been exacerbated by the club chopping and changing managers with different styles.

There is a clearer identity under Solskjaer. That alone will not guarantee success, but it’s a step in the right direction and he deserves time to see the job through.

2) POGBA: BUILD THE TEAM ROUND HIM OR GET RID?

CS: I see only one solution — kick him and his agent into touch. Mino Raiola is a troublemaker. If my representative was misrepresenting me, I’d make it very clear to my club and the supporters. Pogba hasn’t done that, and there’s nothing stopping him from doing it.

A glance on social media shows he has 50million followers across Twitter and Instagram. Paul Scholes said on Tuesday night that Pogba is a ‘good lad’. This is not the behaviour of a ‘good lad’.

Pogba came on in the second-half against Leipzig and made an impact but he should be sold

He’s staying silent and letting his agent do damage. Is the reason Solskjaer brought on Donny van de Beek at half-time and not Pogba because of what Raiola said?

Did it make him think he cannot rely on him? If so, that’s not fair on the manager. It’s all a mess.

CW: Pogba signed the summer of the Brexit referendum and both topics have since become interminably boring. It hasn’t worked. It isn’t going to work. Time to say goodbye to Pogba and his irksome agent.

The challenge now is to find a buyer and strike a deal that doesn’t look as bad as letting Pogba go for nothing the first time around, then paying £89million to get him back.

IL: We’re all on the same page here. It is too late to build a team around Pogba. United have bought Bruno Fernandes and the two of them want to play in the same position. So it may well be that decision time has arrived in terms of the Frenchman.

This week’s statement by Pogba’s agent would appear to have been endorsed by him. As Chris says, if it wasn’t then surely he would have said so.

Therefore, move Pogba out in January if possible. And spend some of the money saved on wages to bring in another body, even if only on loan.

The timing of the Pogba news this week would have irked Man United manager Solskjaer

What United cannot do is leave Solskjaer light on numbers ahead of a busy second half of the season that will now include a Europa League campaign. So Pogba goes — but only if he can be replaced.

3) WHO'S YOUR KEEPER?

IL: Dean Henderson deserves his chance. David de Gea remains capable of great nights. He was excellent when United won at PSG, for example.

But he is also a player who looks short of hunger and knows he no longer has anything to prove. That’s a bad combination.

Give Henderson a go. If it doesn’t work, United can be reassured they have the most gifted No 2 in world football waiting in the wings!

CS: RB Leipzig’s third goal was weak. De Gea lacked courage. It looked like he was scared of getting clattered. It was a half-hearted challenge. He turned his back on it and you cannot have your goalkeeper doing that.

I thought Henderson would be United’s No 1 at the start of the season. Like Ian, I’d like to see him in the Premier League now.

David de Gea faced criticism afterwards and should be replaced as keeper by Dean Henderson

CW: I have to agree. De Gea’s attempt to keep out Leipzig’s third goal was pitiful. He has been less error-prone so far this season, but a goalkeeper of his stature can still do better.

Henderson deserves a run and an opportunity to stake his claim to be the new No 1. If Solskjaer wants competition between his two keepers then let it be a fair one.

4) HOW MANY OF THE DEFENCE DO YOU KEEP?

CW: I have my reservations about all of them, but Victor Lindelof is the only one I would cut at the moment. The Swede is solid enough, but not up to the standard United require.

The sooner they can offload players such as Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones and sign a world-class centre back the better.

CS: I’d keep faith with Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The right back had a poor night in Germany. Wan-Bissaka is excellent in one-v-one situations but there are areas of his game which require work, such as how to defend crosses from the opposite flank.

But he’s got potential. Maguire is a good central defender and footballer, too. But the jury is still out on Alex Telles.

Luke Shaw has never shown true levels of consistency and there must be an upgrade on Lindelof out there.

IL: United’s best back four is still Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with that defence if it is properly coached. Wan-Bissaka could do with a little more quality on the ball, while Shaw needs to concentrate better.

But Maguire and Lindelof remains an adequate partnership to challenge for the top four.

Maguire has been in decent form since that horror night for England against Denmark in October. Not sure he is a captain, mind you…

Captain Harry Maguire was a figure of frustration as United faltered in Germany on Tuesday

5) WHAT'S YOUR BEST MIDFIELD COMBINATION?

CS: United cannot seem to find a regular position for Van de Beek. Bruno Fernandes is best at No 10, there isn’t a soul out there who would disagree with that. So then it’s about who provides the best protection behind him.

Right now, that’s Fred and Scott McTominay. I’m not necessarily endorsing them, but they are the best duo available to Solskjaer as things stand.

CW: Yes, Fernandes has to play but I would pick Van de Beek and McTominay to sit behind him.

Pogba could get in ahead of them both, but it depends which Pogba turns up: the World Cup winner who made a real impact off the bench in Leipzig or the £89m flop who flatters to deceive.

IL: Recently I wrote that I was confused why Solskjaer had turned away from the Pogba-Nemanja Matic holding combination that did well for him at the back end of last season. That still baffles me a little.

However, if we presume that the Pogba ship has sailed, we have to think again. From what I have seen, Fred has improved hugely this season so I would slide him in alongside Matic and let Fernandes, Greenwood, Rashford and Martial do their thing up ahead.

Bruno Fernandes has been United's saving grace recently and has to be the key midfield man

I take Chris’s point on McTominay, but I don’t see a genuine United player there. As for Van de Beek, I am not convinced Solskjaer ever wanted him in the first place.

6) BEST BLEND IN ATTACK?

CW: Marcus Rashford on the right, Mason Greenwood on the left and, right now, Edinson Cavani through the middle. Looking ahead, United need a world-class striker to be truly competitive again.

Anthony Martial was their top scorer last season but he simply isn’t reliable enough.

CS: Solskjaer likes his split-strikers but I’m going to go with 4-2-3-1. United have got something going forward. There are managers out there who would love to have their armoury.

A major part of Leipzig’s gameplan was to stifle Fernandes. They were so aggressive with him in the first half, but he is a class act and capable of brilliance at any moment.

With him at No 10, I’d also have Cavani in front — his movement is a killer — but I’d play Rashford on the left and Greenwood on the right. Martial hasn’t really got going this season, so he’s my substitute.

Marcus Rashford was not at his potent best on Tuesday and needs assistance up front

IL: Yes, those four have the potential to really hurt teams. However, there are issues over Greenwood right now, while Martial is reminding us of what we already knew, namely that he is inconsistent.

United are not a good enough team to dominate possession against the best sides — they don’t have the players. So as a counter-attacking team, pace is their best option. Solskjaer must look to harness his Fab Four with Cavani coming in as an impact player.

If he gets away from that and looks regularly at starting players such as Juan Mata, I don’t see progress. Mata is a fine ball-player but is a yard too slow.

7) IF MONEY'S NO OBJECT, WHO DO YOU BUY?

CW: Harry Kane would transform United. Or, if Juventus want Pogba back, then what about a swap for Cristiano Ronaldo? United also need a quicker, more agile central back partner for Harry Maguire in the Raphael Varane mould.

CS: See what happened to Liverpool when they prioritised signing a centre back? They got Virgil van Dijk and it was a game changer.

As much as I don’t think Fred and McTominay are top drawer in midfield, I’d target a central defender.

Kalidou Koulibaly of Napoli is forever linked. He’s 29 now, so if he is the man for the job, they need to strike sooner rather than later.

United should target Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly as they need to prioritise a central defender

IL: Ideally, United need a world-class holding player and another central defender. Both are hard to find. Look at Manchester City and how hard they have found it to replace Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho.

There has been talk of a return for Jonny Evans, but what about Leicester’s other central defender Caglar Soyuncu? Or Conor Coady of Wolves?

If United are going to improve, they must behave like a big club. Bidding for players from other good Premier League sides is what big clubs do.

8) ANY OTHER PROBLEMS YOU WOULD FIX?

IL: If the team are winning, the stuff off the field doesn’t matter. There is endless talk of United hiring a director of football, for example, but it is how the recruitment department functions as a whole that really matters.

United have done better in the market recently. Fernandes, Maguire and Wan-Bissaka were decent signings. But United can still be slow off the mark and — strange as it sounds — rather naive.

For example, Solskjaer shook hands on a deal with young Erling Haaland only for him to sign for Borussia Dortmund two weeks later. Clubs such as Liverpool are not just outstripping United on the field, they are doing so in the market, too.

United missed out on Borussia Dortmund's Erling Haaland and need to be better in the market

CS: I get bored of hearing about ‘the Manchester United way’ and how it’s in the club’s DNA to be successful. When Solskjaer was asked about playing for a draw in Leipzig, which would have taken them into the last 16, he said: ‘It’s not in the club’s genes.’

What does that even mean? United should stop living in the past. Get to grip with reality. One of the first things Solskjaer has to address is how and why they start games so slowly.

CW: Director of football — do United want one or not? It’s clear that they need one to oversee a more coherent transfer policy but Ed Woodward and Matt Judge seem a little reluctant to let go of the reins.

Manchester United 'are going to have a lot of issues next season' unless they spend big, warns Paul Ince - with Cavani, Pogba, De Gea, Van de Beek and inconsistency all problems for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to address

* Paul Ince has predicted Manchester United will face a series of major problems
* The futures of several first-team stars at the club will be uncertain this summer
* Ince has urged his former side to splash the cash and bring in a new frontman
* Key players Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and David de Gea may all depart soon

Paul Ince has warned Manchester United that they are facing 'a lot of issues' next season unless they splash the cash in the summer.

United were forced to settle a point against old foes Leeds at the weekend but are still set to secure a Champions League spot for the next campaign.

The club have been handed a headache ahead of the transfer window opening, however, with several players set to exit - and former United star Ince says that spending money will be crucial to avoid a drop in form.

Paul Ince says Manchester United face a 'lot of issues' next season unless they spend heavily. Edinson Cavani is set to leave Old Trafford this summer and Paul Pogba may too

'They are not as far off as we thought two years ago,' Ince told Sky Sports. 'They are progressing gradually.

'But on that performance (against Leeds) they are a long way (off), they have been so inconsistent this season it is hard to judge.

'They need money, they need a striker. It looks like [Edinson] Cavani is going to Boca Juniors. They are going have a lot of issues next season.

Pundit Ince believes United need to invest with several first-team players poised for an exit. David de Gea has dropped below Dean Henderson in the pecking order despite his hefty salary

'David de Gea is on £300k a week plus as a No 2 [goalkeeper]. [Paul] Pogba might be going. [Donny] Van de Beek cost £40million and can’t even get a game.

'They are going to need to invest. But to win titles you need consistent performances week in and week out.

'And we have not seen that this season from United even if they have got the results.'

Cavani, who has netted 10 goals in all competitions this season, is poised to exit Old Trafford after a one-year stay due to the veteran's wish to return to South America.

Meanwhile, De Gea has fallen behind Dean Henderson in the pecking order between the sticks and faces a fight to salvage his future at the club.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may also face a fight to convince Paul Pogba to stay as the mercurial midfielder prepares to enter the final year of his deal.

Pogba and Cavani were both brought off the bench at Elland Road for the stalemate on Sunday and boss Solskjaer was left to rue his team's missed opportunities.

'Today we just didn't have the moment, take [our chances] when we had them,' Solskjaer said.

'A draw is disappointing because we wanted to put pressure on [Manchester] City, but we couldn't score.'

Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba are 'a problem' if Manchester United want to sign Jack Grealish, claims Rio Ferdinand - but he insists they must try to buy £80m-rated Aston Villa star 'all day long'

* England star Jack Grealish is widely expected to leave Aston Villa this summer
* The two Manchester clubs have been linked with the £80m-rated midfielder
* Rio Ferdinand admits he would want Grealish at Old Trafford 'all day long'
* But the ex-United defender admits it would be a difficult deal to justify this year
* Ferdinand says Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford's roles on the left make it tough

Rio Ferdinand admits he would want Manchester United to sign Jack Grealish 'all day long' but it would be 'difficult' for the club to fit him in alongside Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford.

England star Grealish, who is currently with his country at Euro 2020 this summer, is widely expected to leave Aston Villa this summer after a brilliant season in the Premier League, with Manchester City also interested in the 25-year-old.

But former United and England defender Ferdinand claims Grealish would be competing alongside midfielder Pogba and forward Rashford for starting places on the left side - representing a 'problem' in justifying move that would cost upwards of £80million.

Rio Ferdinand says it would be difficult for Man United to justify signing Jack Grealish. Ferdinand pointed out that Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba occupy Grealish's positions

When asked if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side should sign Grealish, Ferdinand told UMM YouTube channel host Harry Pinero: 'All day long. All day long, man.

'I don't think Bruno Fernandes is the problem, you've got Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba that are both playing on the left and that's where Jack plays.

'His best position is on the left, and his next best position is No 10. They're the positions where our most influential players are right now. So I think it's difficult to see him at Manchester United right now.

Bruno Fernandes (right) also plays in Grealish's other favoured role, the No 10 position. Ferdinand did admit that he would want Grealish at Old Trafford 'all day long'

'If he leaves Villa, I just don't think it'll be to Manchester United, unless they ship one or two of those boys away. I see it as a difficult deal to be done for Man United.'

Despite a shin injury which ruled him out for a significant part of the season, Grealish scored six goals and registered 12 assists in a promising term for Villa, which saw them challenge for European football for most of the campaign.

That form, plus several man-of-the-match displays for England - earned Grealish a spot in Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2020, but he was an unused substitute in the Three Lions' opening game of the tournament against Croatia.

Grealish's form for Villa earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2020. The 25-year-old was an unused substitute for England's Group D opener against Croatia

Before the 1-0 victory in their Group D opener, Ferdinand told Sportsmail that he wanted Southgate to unleash Grealish on the big stage, along with fellow youngsters Mason Mount, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho.

When asked who he is most looking forward to seeing in an England shirt this summer, Ferdinand claimed: 'I've already seen Kane, Rashford, (Raheem) Sterling in a tournament so it's not any of them.

'If I could see Bellingham perform on this stage, if I could see Foden perform on this stage, if I could see Grealish perform on this stage, if I could see Sancho. Mason Mount is another one. Those are the players that are exciting me.

'Give them a platform, give them the freedom to go and perform like they did for their clubs, and let them set this tournament on fire.

'Some of the best memories within our recent history of England have been Wayne Rooney, 18 years old in the Euros, Michael Owen at a World Cup in France at 18 years old.

'Unleashing these talents to go and create havoc and surprise many people around Europe has been amazing.'

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 'is plotting a Manchester United tactical overhaul': Ending Scott McTominay and Fred's midfield partnership, allowing him to play Jadon Sancho, Bruno Fernandes AND Paul Pogba... and throwing Donny van de Beek a lifeline

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is working on an attacking 4-3-3 formation for next season
* A report in ESPN says the coach wants to stop playing two holding midfielders
* The news could spell the end of the Fred-Scott McTominay midfield partnership

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is preparing his Manchester United players for a big change in tactics for the coming season in favour of an ultra-attacking 4-3-3 formation, according to a report in ESPN.

The report says the Norwegian is considering doing away with his trusted midfield partnership of Fred and Scott McTominay and will play just one holding midfielder in order to find a way to play new signing Jadon Sancho and star midfielders Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in the same starting 11.

And the report says that the club must sign a top, ball-playing centreback to make the plan work, with Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane top of the club's list.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to play a more attacking formation next season, says ESPN. The new shape could see new arrival Jadon Sancho (pictured) play in a front three

Solskjaer deployed a pretty consistent starting line-up last season as the team finished second in the Premier League and reached the final of the Europa League.

A regular feature was a double holding midfield pivot of McTominay and Fred, who played 28 times together in all competitions.

But with the club looking to build a proper title bid for next season and to go deep in the Champions League after getting knocked out of the group stage last year, he is looking to freshen up his side and make them more attacking so new signing Sancho can sparkle.

A three-man midfield could also throw a lifeline to Donny van de Beek, who only made a desperately disappointing four Premier League starts last season following a £40m move from Ajax.

Some fans grew tired of Solskjaer's 4-2-3-1 shape over the season and they will be delighted with the prospect of a more offensive formation, although the team could lose some of the stability that comes with playing two defensive midfielders.

Scott McTominay (pictured) has been a regular fixture alongside Brazilian Fred in midfield

The shift could benefit Donny van de Beek (pictured), who made four league starts last term

That is why the club are so keen to bring in a world class central defender to come forward and provide extra support to the midfield.

Varane, who has one year left on his deal with Real, is believed to be United's top choice, with the ESPN report saying Real would be open to negotiations with United should the Frenchman decide against penning a new contract.

Real may be reluctant to let Varane go after parting ways with Sergio Ramos, although they have already brought in a top class defender in David Alaba and Eder Militao made huge strides in his development last season.

The Spaniards have also recently tied stalwart defender Nacho to a new deal, so they could be ready to let Varane leave for the right price to boost their finances as they balance paying for their costly renovation of their Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

United are also reported to be looking at Real's city rivals Atletico Madrid for another player as they hope to bring Kieran Trippier in to provide competition for Aaron Wan Bissaka at right back, although they are reluctant to meet the LaLiga champions' £34m asking price for the England defender.

United will be without Marcus Rashford for the start of the season after he decided to undergo surgery on his shoulder, which is expected to keep him out until the end of October.

His absence means Mason Greenwood will hope to start the season after missing the European Championship due to a niggling injury, operating as a wide forward alongside Sancho and centre-forward Edinson Cavani.

David de Gea/Dean Henderson

Aaron Wan Bissaka, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Push Mason Greenwood out wide, get Paul Pogba creating further forward and use Jadon Sancho's impact from the bench... is THIS how Manchester United could line-up after Cristiano Ronaldo's shock return?

* Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the Premier League and ready to shake things up
* Manchester United have re-signed the iconic forward for £19.8m from Juventus
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces some big decisions on how he builds his team
* Even big-money new signing Jadon Sancho could be benched for Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is back and he's primed to terrorise the Premier League again. Now it's up to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to mould a title-winning team around the icon.

The details are all confirmed – a £19.8million transfer from Juventus, a two-year deal with an option for another, £385,000-a-week wages and a medical completed in Lisbon on Monday.

Ronaldo joins Jadon Sancho (£73m) and Raphael Varane (£42m) at Old Trafford amid the transfer window of United fans' dreams. All that remains is to decide who plays where.

Solskjaer faces some big decision in attack. He has options to blend youth and experience, pace and power, and finishers with creators up front.

With surely their best chance yet of a 21st Premier League, Sportsmail's TOBY MILES looks at how United's XI could look with Ronaldo included.

Possible Manchester United 2021/22 XI - (4-2-3-1)

GOALKEEPER: David De Gea

At 30 years old and following a calamitous 2020-21 campaign, the Spaniard has been handed a lifeline.

Dean Henderson's convincing case to start as Man United's No 1 was wrecked by a hip injury, allowing De Gea much-needed matches to rediscover his former self.

The Englishman only returned to training on Friday, while De Gea flew back to Carrington early for pre-season after watching Spain's Euro 2020 campaign from the bench.

It's now or never for the keeper once known as the world's best, and his incredible double save from Wolves' Romain Saiss on Sunday was a great and decisive start, allowing Mason Greenwood the platform to go and win the game late on.

David de Gea needs to quickly re-establish himself in goal before Dean Henderson's return

RIGHT BACK: Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Mr Reliable will need to work on his crossing to impress Cristiano Ronaldo this season.

The right-back has missed just seven Premier League games since arriving from Crystal Palace two years ago, and looks set to nail down the right-back spot at Old Trafford for years to come.

The Englishman's key shortcomings are his wayward balls into the box. A pay rise and some celebratory embraces with Ronaldo await if he can improve that. But there will be histrionics if he does not!

CENTRE BACK: Harry Maguire

Victor Lindelof never suited Harry Maguire as a centre-back partner, and the United skipper's quality could start to shine alongside Raphael Varane.

The Englishman was going through a rough time a year ago, having been arrested on holiday in Greece, sent off for England and under intense scrutiny for his performances at club level.

Euro 2020 put any doubts over the £80m centre-back's ability to bed. Just one goal leaked past the Three Lions defender, who made the Team of the Tournament.

Starting his third campaign with United, the 28-year-old is surrounded by a team capable of making sure he lifts silverware for the first time as United captain.

Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire could turn out to be the centre-back pair United need

CENTRE BACK: Raphael Varane

United's second signing of the summer started how he means to go on against Wolves, notching a clean sheet and assisting Mason Greenwood's winner.

The 20-time Premier League champions have needed Varane for years. He's the experienced, dependable, world-class centre-back that could be the missing piece of the puzzle.

In truth, he may even work out as United's best addition of the window...

LEFT BACK: Luke Shaw

Only two men had ever scored in a major tournament final for England before Luke Shaw popped up at the back post two minutes into the Euro 2020 final.

Shaw returned home as one of the players of the tournament, capping a sensational resurrection after being cast off by Jose Mourinho.

Totally indispensable in United's backline these days, the left-back will relish whipping crosses in to meet Ronaldo and his astonishing leap.

Luke Shaw will be spending the season aiming his crosses towards the head of Ronaldo

CENTRE MIDFIELD: Scott McTominay

Since debuting in 2017 Scott McTominay's influence has steadily grown at his boyhood club. The Scot's versatility threatens to hold him back, but this could be his season to shine.

The midfielder is now 24 years old and established, having played a key role last season with 49 appearances. He's a manager's dream, switching happily between holding midfield at Old Trafford and centre-back with Scotland.

McTominay was a stand-out performer in the 5-1 thrashing of Leeds, and could find Varane has lifted some of the defensive pressure lifted from his shoulders when he returns from groin surgery.

CENTRE MIDFIELD: Fred

Error-prone and unreliable last season, Fred's 2021-22 campaign has started in similarly worrying fashion.

The midfielder was told to 'wake up' by Rio Ferdinand on Twitter during the game against Wolves, a familiar demand aimed at the Brazilian.

Fred isn't the long-term answer for United, who have targeted Rennes' Edouardo Camavinga to replace him, but Solskjaer looks set to rely on him once more this season.

Their performance off the ball against Wolves demonstrated why Fred and Paul Pogba can't be paired up in the deeper roles, and the Brazilian will badly need McTominay's defensive discipline alongside.

Fred will need to raise his game to match the new higher standards at United this season

RIGHT WING: Mason Greenwood

How do you displace a 19-year-old wonderkid who has three goals from three games at the start of a Premier League season? Well, with one of the all-time great footballers.

Mason Greenwood is the future of Manchester United but now Cristiano Ronaldo is the present, and there's no chance the teenager will start at centre-forward ahead of the Portuguese icon.

Greenwood played 22 matches on the right for United last season, bagging 10 goals. He'll take his chances up top when he can, but in the meantime Solskjaer will surely instruct Greenwood to watch and learn.

ATTACKING MIDFIELD: Bruno Fernandes

Few players have replicated the transformative impact Bruno Fernandes has had at United down the club's rich history, but the midfielder's new team-mate is one.

Although an exhausted Fernandes couldn't muster the energy to link up effectively with Ronaldo at Euro 2020 after a draining season, the pair are undoubtedly on the same wavelength.

Their gritty desperation for goals and glory and the sky-high standards they place onto team-mates will make them a formidable duo in the dressing room. On the pitch, it could make for a destructive partnership.

Who takes the penalties, though?

LEFT WING: Paul Pogba

What to do with Paul Pogba? The Frenchman has constantly wavered from staying to going since his £89m move in 2016, and besides flashes of pure magic he has yet to justify that former world-record fee.

Now could be the time, but first Solskjaer must set him free. Despite his size, strength and vision Pogba is wasted in a holding role alongside Fred.

The way Adama Traore and Wolves tore through United's midfield on Saturday should serve as a warning.

Pogba's masterclass against Leeds – notching four assists – proved he can thrive up in attack alongside Fernandes.

Paul Pogba needs to be creative further up the pitch for United to get the best of the star

CENTRE FORWARD: Cristiano Ronaldo

A different Ronaldo to the one who last set this league alight is coming back to Old Trafford. But regardless, CR7 guarantees goals.

The Portuguese legend was a full-back's nightmare when he played out wide in the noughties but gets around the pitch significantly less now.

The 36-year-old will take up a central position and wait for the likes of Fernandes or Pogba to work their magic before finishing with his usual ruthless efficiency.

United whipped plenty of balls into the box last season from Shaw's left flank, and Ronaldo will be waiting to build on his 84 Premier League goals.

Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo could strike up a deadly all-Portuguese partnership

Substitutes:

Dean Henderson – So unlucky to miss out on Euro 2020 and his chance to displace De Gea this season. Once fit, he'll be ready to pounce if the Spaniard slips up again.

Anthony Martial – It's hard to see a future for the Frenchman at United with Ronaldo, Greenwood, Rashford and Cavani to battle. Has been linked with a move away.

Jadon Sancho – The £73m man has been almost forgotten since Ronaldo's arrival. Pressure is on when he gets chances ahead of Greenwood.

Jesse Lingard – After a stunning loan spell with West Ham during the second half of last season, United opted to keep the midfielder rather than cashing in. Rejuvenated and determined, expect to see Lingard make an impact from the bench.

Jadon Sancho cost a whopping £73m but could struggle to make the team at times

Edinson Cavani – Another massive name in United's star-studded dressing room, Cavani will provide the perfect back-up for what is likely his final year in England.

Victor Lindelof – Never quite gelled with Maguire, and the new centre-back partnership will be a relief to Solskjaer. Lindelof will get chances to step in during a packed season though.

Donny van de Beek – Could never win Solskjaer round last season after his £40million move and needs a big turnaround to make the transfer a success.
