Default Re: [FAC] Semifinal : Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur

Is it really fair for Tottenham to play FA Cup semi-final vs Manchester United at Wembley? Jose Mourinho is bound to have his say on 'neutral' venue

* Tottenham have played home games at national stadium for the whole season
* The cockerels and slogans adorning the tunnel and dressing rooms will be gone
* Inside the ground there will be 33,500 Spurs supporters rather than 70,000
* Everything will be done to neutralise home advantage but it will still be there

When Tottenham return to Wembley on Saturday, they will no longer be at home.

The cockerels and slogans adorning the lamp-posts and walls of the concourses and walkways, the tunnel and the dressing rooms, will be gone, replaced by FA Cup semi-final branding.

Inside the ground, there will be 33,500 Spurs supporters in the east end of the stadium rather than 70,000, and an equal number from Manchester United in the west end. There will be no grainy images of Jimmy Greaves scoring goals nor audio of Danny Blanchflower talking about daring to do nor Glory Glory Hallelujah and McNamara's Band.

Mauricio Pochettino and his coaching staff will sit with the subs on the other bench and prepare in the east dressing room rather than the west one they have adopted during a season away from White Hart Lane.

Spurs will not be served a pre-match meal inside the stadium as they have become accustomed to and are expected to treat it like an away fixture, with an overnight hotel stay.

Everything possible will be done to neutralise Wembley and yet the significant disadvantage of not playing at their true home for the last nine months is about to become a positive for Spurs.

Tottenham have become used to the place after difficult beginnings. Last season, lodging for European games, they won only one of four matches and there was a rush to blame the stadium switch. This season, they started poorly, beaten by Chelsea then held by Burnley and Swansea.

Wembley has been home for Tottenham all season and now it is supposed to be neutral. Tottenham will benefit from their familiar surroundings as they strive to add silverware. Spurs face Manchester United in the semi-final of the FA Cup at their adopted home this week. United manager Jose Mourinho is bound to have his say on the supposedly neutral venue

Last season, finishing runners-up behind Chelsea, they won 17 and drew two of the 19 Premier League games at White Hart Lane. It was a fortress.

'Wembley is a different place,' said captain Hugo Lloris in August. 'It demands more effort in your mind and body. We need to find the right feeling and find the right confidence.'

It was a month when even Pochettino shelved his relentless positive thinking to admit there was a 'mental problem we need to fix'. Spurs did not win there in the Premier League until October, and then they put four past Liverpool, beat Real Madrid and found a rhythm.

Saturday's defeat by Manchester City was their first against English opponents since they went to City in December.

They were beaten in the Champions League by Juventus but the last traces of any psychological barrier connected to Wembley were banished by thrilling victories against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Spurs have made the temporary move a success, embracing thousands of new fans with cheap tickets, doubling the number of season-ticket holders, and giving away thousands more tickets to good causes.

Six times they have drawn crowds of more than 80,000. Three times they have broken the Premier League attendance record. Moreover, the players are comfortable on the stage.

They have a routine, they are used to the pitch and train on one with the same dimensions.

The novelty factor is long gone and fears assuaged over the course of 30 games played at the venue since the start of last season.

Wembley is not home for Tottenham but they benefit from its familiarity as they strive to add silverware to the unquestionable progress under Pochettino by winning the FA Cup for the first time since 1991.

Whether the FA Cup semi-finals belong at Wembley is a separate issue. Traditionalists would prefer them to revert to the neutral club grounds which regularly hosted such games until the national stadium was reopened in 2007, but the FA show no sign of yielding to that point of view.

Wembley semi-finals are a money-spinner and this means they will remain. Whether this year with Spurs in residence it can be counted as a truly neutral venue is open to question.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho will certainly have his opinion. Tottenham hold an advantage in the FA Cup, but no one complained about not having to play them at White Hart Lane in the Premier League.

Paul Scholes suggests Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho should bench Alexis Sanchez for FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham: 'Martial and Rashford are a better option'

* Alexis Sanchez was dropped for Wednesday's 2-0 win away to Bournemouth
* Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial impressed for United on the south coast
* Paul Scholes believes two young stars should start FA Cup tie ahead of Sanchez
* United take on Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday in the first FA Cup semi-final

In the wake of Manchester United's dominant 2-0 away win against Bournemouth, club legend Paul Scholes offered some advice to Jose Mourinho ahead of his FA Cup semi-final team selection.

The BT Sport pundit believes Mourinho should start Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial either side of Romelu Lukaku - rather than allow January signing Alexis Sanchez to take one of the wide roles.

United take on Tottenham at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday evening and Scholes would keep Sanchez, having been dropped for the Bournemouth win, benched for the Wembley showpiece.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial should start the FA Cup semi-final, claims Paul Scholes. The pair were given a rare starting berth in the impressive 2-0 win over Bournemouth. Alexis Sanchez was benched and Scholes says he should be overlooked for FA Cup semi-final

'I think the big decision is who plays either side of (Romelu) Lukaku,' Scholes said. 'I’d go (Marcus) Rashford and (Anthony) Martial but I think he’ll probably bring Sanchez back into it.

'I just don’t think his form has been good enough. I think he’s been quite predictable – we all know the talent he’s got.

'Obviously there is a magnificent player in there but at Manchester United he’s just not showing it yet. I think Martial and Rashford are a better option.'

Jose Mourinho made seven changes and witnessed a handful give him a selection headache. But Scholes felt Sanchez's form has not merited a start against Tottenham at Wembley

Quote:
SCHOLES' TEAM TO FACE TOTTENHAM

United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Young; McTominay, Matic, Pogba; Martial, Lukaku, Rashford

*Based on Scholes' comments after United's game at Bournemouth
Wednesday's win on the south coast was an impressive team performance but with Mourinho making seven changes from the embarrassing home defeat to West Brom — which handed Manchester City the title — a number of players may have played themselves into contention for Wembley.

'(Chris) Smalling plays at centre-half,' continued Scholes as he ran through his preferred United side.

'I thought (Phil) Jones played well tonight but he’s not played a lot of games. I think (Ashley Young and (Antonio) Valencia will come back in.

'(Nemanja) Matic will come back in. (Paul) Pogba will play. Will he play (Ander) Herrera? I don’t think so. He’ll need to get two people in alongside Pogba because in the Wembley game (in the league) he was all over the place.'

MOURINHO: HOW WE'VE PREPARED FOR WEMBLEY

Jose Mourinho has outlined how his Manchester United team have been preparing for Saturday’s big game against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds face Premier League rivals Spurs in a crucial Emirates FA Cup semi-final on Saturday (kick-off 17:15 BST), with a place in the final on 19 May at stake.

United have had one day less to prepare for the Wembley clash than the north London club, who drew 1-1 at Brighton on Tuesday night in the league.

The Reds made the long trip to Bournemouth on Wednesday night, beating the Cherries 2-0. But, instead of returning to Manchester after the game, the squad travelled directly to the capital and have been using Championship club Fulham’s training ground in west London.

Speaking to MUTV on Friday, the boss expressed his gratitude to Cottagers boss Slavisa Jokanovic for allowing the team to use their facilities, to ensure the best possible preparation for what is now United’s biggest game of the season so far.

“First of all, to thank them [Fulham] because they let us use the best facilities,” Mourinho said. “Yesterday [Thursday] they let us use the stadium Craven Cottage and today [Friday] I asked for a pitch on the training ground [Motspur Park] and Jokanovic, the manager, gave me their best pitch so I have to thank Fulham and Joka for that.

“I think it’s just good for us after the Bournemouth game, instead of travelling back to Manchester, getting the plane, then go back home, come back the next day, train to London again. But we just came here [to London], we’re here together, training quietly, preparing for the game the best we can.”

UNITED'S FIVE FA CUP WINS OVER SPURS

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will meet in the Emirates FA Cup for the 16th time on Saturday (kick-off 17:15 BST).

United have won five, drawn five and lost five of the previous 15 clashes against the north London club in English football's biggest domestic cup competition.

The Reds have a promising recent record against Spurs in the FA Cup, having won the last three meetings, with the most recent being a 2-1 victory in the fourth round at Old Trafford in 2009.

Saturday's crucial last-four tie will be the first time that United and Tottenham meet at Wembley in the competition, with the majority of the previous meetings coming at either side’s home grounds, although there was one tie played at a neutral venue - the 1962 semi-final, which was staged at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground.

Here, we take a closer look at the five previous times the Reds have got the better of Spurs in the FA Cup...

3 February 1926, United 2-0 Tottenham, fourth-round replay

United sealed a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, after a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane in the initial game. Joe Spence, the Reds' eighth top goalscorer of all-time, netted in both games, including the first in this particular tie. Spence, who spent 14 years at the club, scored 168 goals in 510 appearances in total.

14 March 1979, United 2-0 Tottenham, quarter-final replay

United and Spurs have played out five replays during their clashes in the FA Cup - and it was Dave Sexton’s side that were victorious on this occasion. Sammy McIlroy, who played more games against Tottenham Hotspur (19) than any other side for United, opened the scoring in the 10th minute. Joe Jordan, who was United’s top goalscorer in the 1979/80 season and later went on to become an assistant manager at Spurs under Harry Redknapp, added the second on the hour mark.

5 January 1997, United 2-0 Tottenham, third round

Two of the most successful sides in FA Cup history met again in the competition for the first time in 18 years as Sir Alex Ferguson's men recorded another two-goal win. Paul Scholes broke the deadlock in the 51st minute before a trademark David Beckham free-kick beat Spurs goalkeeper Ian Walker to seal United’s place in round four.

27 January 2008, United 3-1 Tottenham, fourth round

Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo saw the Reds come from behind to win at Old Trafford and reach the fifth round of the competition. United fell behind to a Robbie Keane goal in the 24th minute before a Carlos Tevez strike levelled proceedings just before half-time. Ronaldo scored from the spot, after Spurs defender Michael Dawson was sent off for a handball, before firing in a low shot which squirmed underneath Tottenham keeper Radek Cerny to seal the victory.

24 January 2009, United 2-1 Tottenham, fourth round

United proved to be the comeback kings once again against Spurs at the same stage of the competition, producing another turnaround to knock the Lilywhites out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford for the second successive season. Russian striker Roman Pavlyuchenko headed Harry Redknapp’s side in front after just five minutes before a trademark Paul Scholes drive levelled proceedings. But Dimitar Berbatov had the final say against his former club in the 36th minute, rifling home after latching on to a defence-splitting pass from another ex-Spurs man, Michael Carrick.

UNITED'S RECORD AGAINST TOTTENHAM IN THE FA CUP:
Played: 15
Won: 5
Drawn: 5
Lost: 5
Goals scored: 22
Goals conceded: 23

FA CUP SEMI-FINAL PREVIEW: UNITED V SPURS

Setting the scene: United will be looking to book a place in the Emirates FA Cup final on 19 May when taking on Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday's crucial semi-final at Wembley. In what is arguably the biggest game of the season so far, the Reds take on Mauricio Pochettino's side aiming to reach the final of English football's biggest domestic cup competition for the 22nd time. The first semi-final tie of the weekend will see second take on fourth in the Premier League, with United currently six points ahead of Spurs in the table. Jose Mourinho's men will be hoping to continue the positive reaction shown to the West Bromwich Albion defeat from Wednesday night's 2-0 win at Bournemouth, but it promises to be another stiff test against a Spurs side seeking their first major trophy since 2008.

How can I follow it? Saturday’s big match will kick off at 17:15 BST and will be broadcast live on BBC One in the UK. MUTV subscribers on Sky or Virgin Media, the MUTV app, or online at MUTV.com can enjoy match build-up from 15:00 BST on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game, before watching it in full from 12:00 BST on Sunday afternoon. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com’s live blog and our official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What’s the team news? The boss said after Wednesday’s victory that every player that played against Bournemouth has given themselves a chance to be selected against Tottenham. There were no new injury concerns to arise from the win on the south coast, with only Sergio Romero expected to miss out due to an injury sustained on international duty with Argentina last month. Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Valencia are expected to be restored to the line-up. Meanwhile, Spurs are set to be without left-back Danny Rose (calf) and midfielder Harry Winks (ankle). Second-choice stopper Michel Vorm has played in goal throughout their cup run, as he did last season, but no.1 Hugo Lloris was brought back for their semi-final defeat to Chelsea a year ago and Pochettino may opt to do the same this weekend.

How have Tottenham been doing? Spurs drew 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night, leaving the club fourth in the Premier League table on 68 points with four games left to play. The north London club need seven points from their remaining four fixtures to guarantee a place in the UEFA Champions League next season. Pochettino’s men have failed to win their last two games, having also lost 3-1 at home to champions Manchester City. But, despite calls for the match to be held at a neutral venue, the game will be played at Wembley - where Spurs have played their home games this season while their new ground is being built. After a shaky start at their temporary home, the Lilywhites have acclimatised to their new surroundings. They have won 10, drawn four and lost just two of their 16 home league games this term.

How have both sides reached this stage? United have advanced to the last four of the competition for the second time in three years, impressively without conceding a goal. The Reds beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 in last month's quarter-final, having also seen off Huddersfield Town 2-0, Yeovil Town 4-0 and Derby County 2-0. Meanwhile, Tottenham booked their semi-final spot with a 3-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium in their quarter-final, and have also seen off lower-league opposition in AFC Wimbledon, Newport County and Rochdale.

What happened in this season's other meetings? Both sides have a victory apiece from the two league encounters this term. United came out on top at Old Trafford in October as Anthony Martial scored a late winner in a 1-0 success, before Spurs won 2-0 the last time the teams met at Wembley at the end of January courtesy of an early Christian Eriksen strike and an unfortunate own goal by Phil Jones.

One to watch… The records have been tumbling all season for irrepressible frontman Harry Kane, who has 37 goals and five assists in 43 appearances for Spurs in all competitions this season. The 24-year-old England striker missed the Old Trafford meeting in October through injury but was the chief tormentor for Spurs in their win over United three months ago. He has only scored once in eight previous appearances against the Reds but will be keen to improve that record this weekend and the United defenders will have to be on top of their game to keep him quiet.

What’s our record against Tottenham like? United have the edge over Spurs historically, winning 89 of our 188 meetings – the first coming in 1899. There have been 48 draws while Tottenham have won 51 times. The sides last met in the FA Cup in January 2009, with United running out 2-1 winners on the day at Old Trafford.

What's our record at Wembley? United have played at the national stadium on 50 previous occasions, including 18 FA Cup finals, seven League Cup finals and two European Cup finals. The Reds have won 27 of those games, drawing five and losing 18. The joint biggest wins were 4-0 against Brighton & Hove Albion in the 1983 FA Cup final replay and against Newcastle in the 1996 Charity Shield. United have faced Chelsea at Wembley more than any other club, with seven appearances against the West Londoners.

Did you know? This will be United’s 29th appearance in an FA Cup semi-final - the joint most with Arsenal. The Reds have progressed to the final 19 times from the previous 28 last-four ties.

Who’s the referee? Anthony Taylor will be in the middle for his fourth United game of the current campaign, last taking charge of the Reds in the 3-0 win over Stoke in January. Taylor was also in charge of the 2-1 win against West Brom in December and 1-0 defeat to Chelsea back in November. The Cheshire whistler will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn, while Kevin Friend will be the fourth official. This game will also have the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in operation, with Andre Marriner taking on the role and Andy Halliday assisting him.

WEMBLEY IS UNITED'S HOME FROM HOME

It’s fair to say Wembley Stadium has become Manchester United’s second home over the years.

Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur will be the club’s 51st appearance at the national stadium, which has been a happy hunting ground for the Reds.

In the previous 50 games, United have won 27, drawn five and lost 18, while scoring 73 goals and conceding 57.

The past decade in particular has been a period of success for the Reds at Wembley, the scene of three League Cup triumphs and the FA Cup victory just two years ago.

Indeed, Jose Mourinho has already tasted success at Wembley on two occasions in his United career, in the Community Shield and League Cup last term, as he prepares to take charge of his fourth match at the national stadium as Reds boss – moving level with Sir Matt Busby.

Will it prove to be another memorable day for United at the home of English football?
