Manchester United fans prepare to show their true colours at Wembley

Green and gold will outnumber the traditional black and red at Wembley on Sunday as supporters unite against the Glazers

When a Manchester United supporter still known only as "chatmaster" floated the idea on an internet messageboard that fans might defy the debt-laden Glazer family's ownership by wearing green and gold, he can surely not have dreamed the scale the demonstration would reach. At tomorrow's Carling Cup final against Aston Villa, United fans in their thousands will arrive at Wembley sporting scarves or shirts in those original colours of Newton Heath, the club formed in 1878 by workers on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, which later became Manchester United.

It will, surely, be the first time in football history that fans choose a showpiece final to protest en masse against their club's owners, and that signifies the remarkably educated nature of this United fans' campaign. The half-hearted argument that they have nothing to demonstrate about given three Premier League championships, a Champions League trophy and now yet another Wembley final since the Glazers bought the club in 2005, is having no impact.

Last month the Glazers published their bond-raising prospectus setting out the details of their ownership. The fans know that Sir Alex Ferguson and his team's success has been achieved despite the £716m of debt the Glazers loaded on to the club, the £464m fees and interest for which United have since become liable, and the £22.9m the family have taken out in fees and personal loans. No justification of that, or attempt to say it has not affected the club, from Ferguson, the chief executive, David Gill, or the Glazer family's representative, has swayed general outrage among fans whose ticket prices have steadily risen to pay for it all.

"It had a very powerful impact for fans to see from the Glazers, in their own document, that so much money is going out of the club," says Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters' Trust. "Green and gold has become so effective because it is a clear way to protest against the Glazers while supporting the team and proposing a better vision for United. It feels now like a widespread movement for change."

The yearning fuelled by this reaction is for United to be owned not by investors like the Glazers, but by the supporters, for the club to be truly a club. Given the scale of finance required to buy the Glazers out, presumably with a profit, and the £716m debts to take on or pay off, this is beyond a movement of ordinary fans. The trust, though, is in contact with the "red knights", a group of wealthy United supporters developing a bid to put to the Glazers. That, Drasdo says, is likely to involve 40 or so people taking a small stake each, and giving opportunities to the trust and fans generally to build up a shareholding.

Andy Green, an investment professional and United supporter who wrote a challenging open letter to Gill last week under his blogging name Andersred, says: "There is a very serious process going on in the City, with investors looking at a structure in which fans can develop as significant a stake as possible. Key will be persuading the Glazers to sell."

Keith Harris, the merchant banker and United supporter working with the red knights group, called this week for supporters to hit the Glazers where the prospectus showed they would be truly damaged, by withholding the money that services all that interest and fees. Drasdo says the prospect of replacing the Glazers with ownership more suited to United's character is hugely important to fans.

"Supporters do have very significant power because the Glazers' financial plans rely on fans continuing to pay their money in a variety of ways," he says. "I think when a very credible bid comes forward, fans will then feel most motivated to wield that power. We already know there is a huge drop in demand for executive facilities, and we believe many people will not renew those subscriptions next season."

The Glazers' representative has declined to comment on any alternative bid, and continued to say the family are long-term investors at United. Yet anger at the debts their takeover has imposed on the club, the other north American "leveraged buyout" at Liverpool, and Portsmouth's financial collapse has popularised the idea of supporter-owned football clubs beyond the passions of a small group of active fans. Supporters from the City of London to the Stretford End are asking why great sporting institutions like Manchester United should be owned by speculators from Florida with no previous connection to it, rather than the crowds of adherents who have supported it for life.

Some fans did turn away from Old Trafford immediately after the Glazer takeover in 2005, and today FC United of Manchester, the supporter-owned club that has since enjoyed three promotions to the UniBond League Premier Division, are holding a rally "Beyond the Debt" at their Gigg Lane ground, to promote supporter ownership.

"Those of us who formed FC United did so because we recognised there was a need to provide a positive, supporter and community-focused alternative," says Andy Walsh, the anti-Glazer campaigner turned general manager of the club. Today's rally will be attended by the Liverpool supporters group Spirit of Shankly, Portsmouth fans and Dave Boyle, the chief executive of Supporters Direct, the organisation that promotes democratic fan involvement in clubs.

Boyle and Walsh were in Brussels this week lobbying the European Parliament for an idea whose time, they believe, has come – together with Uefa, which enshrines in its document "Vision Europe" the idea that clubs should be clubs, owned by the fans. "In an ideal world," it says, "all clubs would be controlled and run by their members – eg supporters – according to democratic principles."

At Gigg Lane today and in green and gold at Wembley tomorrow, supporters will be united in campaigning for football to reassess its tortured relationship with money and rediscover its true colours.

PICTURES: It Was Green and Gold Last Time Too

Manchester United would have won the domestic Treble in 1994 if not for Aston Villa beating 3-1 in the League Cup final, with Mark Hughes scoring our only goal.

Interestingly, United wore the green and gold strip during that final, which is a colour that will be reflected in the crowd this Sunday.

Red Knights Ajak Suporter Lawan Glazer
Rossi Finza Noor - detiksport

Default Re: Green And Gold Till The Club Is Sold..!

This United goal is green and gold

May the Red Knights oust the Glazers. But this campaign should encourage fans to demand real collective ownership

A consortium of City bankers is planning a £1bn takeover bid. Such news rarely sounds as promising as it will to Manchester United fans today. The deep antipathy to the Glazer family has hardened after the financial results of their ownership of the club were laid bare in January.

Yet optimism should be heavily tinged with caution. While Malcolm Glazer's route to a takeover was to steadily buy up shares when it was a plc in 2005, the club is now his alone to sell or not. And though this consortium features influential financiers described as committed United fans, football is littered with the debris of owners, chairmen and directors who promised much and wreaked havoc at the likes of Newcastle, Leeds, and Portsmouth.

Even the name Red Knights evokes cringing memories of one Michael Knighton, who promised to take the club soaring from the clutches of the unpopular Martin Edwards early in Alex Ferguson's time as manager.

There may be no such doubts over the credentials or affiliation of the likes of Jim O'Neill, a key player in any bid, but there still seems something unlikely about this Goldman Sachs chief economist endorsing the "collective ownership model" that would give ordinary fans a real stake in the club.

The major, overriding reason that United fans will be backing the Red Knights is simple: the endorsement, and partnership, of the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST), whose membership has swelled to 54,000 and is still growing.

Whether it succeeds in ousting the Glazers, the campaign has been an extraordinary one to see. Anti-Glazer feeling has been strong enough to provoke direct action from supporters before now, but it was muted on a wider level – partly by the defence mounted by Ferguson of his American bosses.

After years of subdued resentment, the massive profusion of green and gold – the colours worn by United in the days when they were Newton Heath – has suddenly made visible all that individual anger, the rage shared by the spectators in the next seats and rows. We might look like Norwich fans, but it has been inspiring and energising – the waving scarves and chants have helped create an atmosphere that has not been matched at Old Trafford in years.

The genius of the protest is in providing a way to demonstrate both passion for the club and dissociation from the specific, corporate elements that currently occupy the boardroom.

The green and gold symbolically bypasses the dilemma that Glazer has posed every United fan: do you continue to support, emotionally and financially, a team turned into a company-cum-brand or company run for the speculative financial benefit of a Florida-based family, when the profits are being leached away and the cost of your season ticket is being hiked year after year? Is it better to walk away and start again – as FC United of Manchester did?

Now, to some extent, it feels possible to voice that positive support and massive dissatisfaction at once, as the sight of thousands twirling green and gold scarfs back at the United players and manager parading the Carling Cup at Wembley on Sunday showed.

Whether such a brilliantly simple, visual campaign could work here without the ready-made crowd and constituency of a football club is difficult to know. Yet there are British parallels that go beyond the game: the mass of Labour supporters who have felt their party had been hijacked by a leadership alien to its values, or even those conservative homeowners who want banks for their pensions and mortgages but are outraged by the Fred Goodwins of the world.

In an era where it's easy to believe, from the Iraq war to Cadbury, that most people are powerless in the face of bigger, shapeless forces, even wresting control of Manchester United away from the Glazers would feel a real victory – and a start. The detail that MUST has drawn on some of Obama's campaign consultants should make fans recall that hope doesn't necessarily deliver change. Putting one's hope in a group of bankers may not prove enough, but the momentum the campaign already has could make supporters – of all clubs – believe that shared control is an achievable goal.

Kesatria Merah Gerilya Rebut "Setan Merah"

"Keadaan memang belum jauh berubah. Sekelompok suporter kaya ingin membeli klub. (SCN)

Manchester United fan thrown off MUTV for wearing green-and-gold scarf

Manchester United have been accused of behaving like a communist dictatorship after barring a fan wearing a green-and-gold scarf from appearing on the club' s in-house television station.

Lifelong supporter Steve Tilzey was thrown off the show Red Cafe on MUTV when he refused to take off the scarf, a symbol of the protests against the Glazer family's ownership.

He said: 'This is censorship. It's symbolic of what is happening at the club and it is bang out of order. It's like being told to leave by the secret police or the Stasi. But this isn't Tianaman Square, it's a peaceful protest.'

Former United players answer questions from supporters on the programme and Tilzey is often a member of the audience.

He added: 'I have been going on it regularly for about 18 months. About 20 minutes into the programme during an advertising break, suddenly I got a tap on my shoulder and there were two or three security guards saying: "You have to take that off or leave." I said: "I will never take the scarf off but I am prepared to leave."

'I don't blame the producer or the floor manager. They got a call and they were told to get me off. Another man was wearing a green-and-gold scarf but he chose to take his off. He must have felt intimidated.

'I went to the bar and people, the crew, the security guards, were coming up to me and saying: "That is so, so wrong".

"I don't wear it to wind people up. I wear it because it's my club. I have been wearing it for the last five or six weeks. I wore it at work and in town and I didn't even think about it when I went to the show with it on. I wore it on the Red Cafe about three weeks ago and no one said a thing. This is the first time the club has gone into press censorship. It's not acceptable.'

And Tilzey said the club's heavy-handed treatment was needless – because he wasn't using the show to ask awkward questions.

He added: 'I had put my name down to ask a question. I wanted to ask Lee Martin, one of the ex-players, about the 1991 European campaign. It wasn't a political statement.'

Seperti dilansir The Daily Mail, Kamis 4 Maret 2010, Tilzey menolak melakukan hal itu.
