U18s: Newcastle 1 United 7

James Wilson

Paul McGuinness' Under-18s ran riot in a stunning victory at Newcastle in which James Wilson bagged an incredible five-goal haul, aided and abetted by a dominant display from those behind him.

After Wilson had put the Reds four goals up inside 35 minutes, Jack Rudge smashed home a scorching free-kick to take United into the interval boasting a five-goal lead.

Though Newcastle opened the second period with a goal from Esteban Cardona-Lopez, the Reds saw out victory in total comfort, as Wilson added his fifth goal and substitute Kenji Gorre hit United's seventh of the afternoon.

From the off, the visitors dominated matters on sun-soaked Tyneside. With Mats Daehli and Andreas Pereira pulling the attacking strings and seemingly omnipresent, it was little surprise when Wilson latched onto Rudge's through-ball and drilled home a near-post finish.

The opening goal briefly sparked the hosts into life, and United goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini had to be alert to field a shot which deflected off Patrick McNair, before making a superb finger-tip save from Jonathyn Quinn's header.

Within long, the contest was finished by a burst of three goals in five minutes, and all were bagged by Wilson. The striker twice benefited from Daehli's industry by finishing off the Norwegian's approach play, then rounded home goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and slotted home after James Weir's forward surge.

Daehli then curled a shot narrowly wide of Woodman's goal as the hosts remained unable to cope with United, and Rudge capped a magnificent first half by crashing home a scorching 25-yard free-kick.

Cardona-Lopez planted a back-post header past Gollini in the fourth minute of the second half, before Quinn forced a superb full-length save from the Italian stopper, but any faint hopes of a dramatic comeback were curtailed just after the hour.

Pereira fed Wilson, whose neat touch away from a defender took him through on goal and allowed him to drill another low finish inside Woodman's near post.

The Magpies goalkeeper then turned away a low Pereira shot but was once again left exposed by his defence in the 73rd minute as Pereira fed substitute Gorre to sidefoot home a finish high into the net.

Pereira's shot was saved and Daehli flashed a shot just wide as the game meandered to its foregone conclusion. Both deserved goals for their outings, but their approach play - and the impressive work of the entire team - instead provided the platform for a five-star display of finishing from 16-year-old Wilson.

United: Gollini; Evans, McNair (Wilkinson 74), Grimshaw, Rowley (Harrop 46); Rudge, Pearson (Gorre 63), Weir, Daehli; Periera, Wilson. Subs not used: O'Hara, Byrne.

Sam Byrne

Manchester United Under-18s picked up all three points at Carrington on Saturday afternoon, courtesy of goals from Sam Byrne and Mats Daehli.

In blustery conditions, the Reds started the brighter of the two sides, as Sam Byrne clipped the outside of the post early on after good close control in the penalty area. Sunderland goalkeeper Joel Dixon was called into action soon after as he beat away a smart effort from James Weir, and Jack Rudge also came close to opening the scoring, heading wide from Donald Love's cross from the right hand side.

However it was Byrne who broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark, when he was gifted his first goal of the season after a badly misjudged defensive header from George Honeyman. The Black Cats midfielder's attemped nod back towards goalkeeper Dixon fell straight to Byrne close to the penalty spot, and the young striker coolly controlled and slotted the ball under the onrushing keeper.

Sunderland captain Lewis Gibbons was lucky to escape with only a yellow card just minutes later, after a mistimed challenge on Louis Rowley. The Reds continued to dictate the first-half tempo, with Byrne going close to scoring a second goal after good work from Daehli, and Weir's turn and shot flying wide just before half-time.

After not managing a strike on target in the entire first half, it took the visitors just three minutes of the second half to test United goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini, who did well to turn Mikaël Mandron's powerful effort over the crossbar. The Reds almost scored again as Rudge attempted to emulate his fantastic goal last week against Newcastle with a long-range effort that cannoned off the top of the crossbar, before Byrne curled another effort just past the far post.

Sunderland, who came back from 3-0 down to claim a 3-3 draw in this fixture last season, threatened Gollini's goal again as Callum Hope, played through by substitute Lynden Gooch, attempted to chip United's young Italian goalkeeper who did well to close down the angle, and Hope's effort floated just over the bar.

A whole raft of changes followed, with Kenji Gorre and Matthew Wilkinson entering the field of play, whilst the visitors were forced into a change in goal as Jonathan Maddison replaced the injured Dixon. Maddison was in the action almost immediately, and was lucky to get away with a clearance striking the back of Weir, the Reds being unable to capitalise on the opportunity.

Byrne almost added the killer second goal with four minutes remaining, but his shot was well turned over by Maddison. The substitute goalkeeper could not thwart Daehli at the death, though, as the young Norwegian slid the ball home to wrap up a deserved victory and claim the Reds' first home points of the season in the Barclays Under-18s Premier League.

The Under-18s are in action again next Saturday, as the young Reds travel to Southampton, and you can see all the action live on MUTV. Kick off is at 11:00 BST.

United: Gollini; Love, Rowley (Wilkinson 72), McNair, Grimshaw, Pearson, Weir, Rothwell (Gorre 72), Byrne, Rudge, Daehli. Subs not used: O'Hara, Evans, Harrop.

Academy XI turn on the style

United's Academy XI thrilled a sizeable crowd at Loughborough University's impressive new stadium with an exhibition of attacking football yielding a 6-2 triumph.

All of the Reds' goals came inside the first 64 minutes as the students finished strongly in a previously one-sided encounter with the youngsters able to showcase their talent in convincing fashion.

Paul McGuinness took a side to the University he attended with the party treated to an extensive tour of the sporting facilities on the campus. A minute's applause preceded the match in memory of former Loughborough sports stalwart Mike Holliday and there was entertainment from the first whistle.

Charlie Turnbull was sold a little short in midfield and Ben Pearson stole in to thunder directly through on goal and slip the ball under Daniel Lowton with less than two minutes on the clock. A flowing move, 10 minutes later, saw Mats Daehli, Andreas Pereira and Jack Barmby carefully work the ball on to James Weir, who prodded home.

Barmby, clearly enjoying himself early on, showed great skill to force a save out of Lowton and then rattled the bar with a thumping free-kick. United ruthlessly punished another slack pass in midfield with Weir feeding Barmby, who timed his through ball to Daehli to perfection, allowing the Norwegian to produce a slide-rule finish.

Pearson, a real bundle of energy, won the ball again and stormed forward with sheer conviction to touch in a fourth following ideal passes between Barmby and Pereira to reward his run into the box. Only the woodwork denied Pereira a first-half goal of his own as his exquisite turn was matched by a stunning shot that thudded down off the underside of the bar with Lowton a mere bystander.

However, the Belgium youth international did not have to wait long to get his name on the scoresheet, flighting a fine free-kick wide of the diving Lowton with 51 minutes gone. Lowton denied Pearson his hat-trick and stretched to get his fingertips to a Barmby chip.

Substitutes James Wilson and Paddy McNair soon combined with the fit-again striker's lay-off swept into the corner of the net by the Northern Irishman for number six. But Loughborough, showing plenty of fitness and spirit, pulled one back when Daniel Nti was left unmarked to head a free-kick from the left past Joel Pereira.

Wilson flashed a drive off target following an eye-catching overlap by Donald Love but the students continued to enjoy a spell of their own pressure, much to the delight of the appreciative crowd, with skipper Liam Grimshaw blocking a goalbound effort by Michael Emmerson. Louis Rowley hit the side-netting from a difficult angle and Barmby went close to a deserved goal late on but there was no further addition to the visitors' scoring with Sam Cooke instead heading in from a corner in stoppage time to further reduce the deficit at the death.

United: Gollini (J.Pereira 46); Love, Grimshaw, McGinty, James; Weir (Rowley 61), Pearson (McNair 61), Hendrie, A.Pereira, Daehli (Wilson 61); Barmby. Subs not used: Rudge.

U18s: United 3 Tottenham 1

Manchester United Under-18s came from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur in an entertaining game at Carrington and go top of Barclays Under-18s Premier League Group 2.

Seven days after losing away to Southampton, the young Reds conceded the first goal at home to Spurs as the bottom-placed visitors made the brighter start. When United failed to clear Darren McQueen's blocked shot, Josh Onomay was on hand to knock the ball past Pierluigi Gollini in the 15th minute.

Paul McGuinness' team responded well to going behind though, and Jack Barmby was twice unlucky not to score an immediate equaliser, first with a delicate chip and then when he forced a good block from Spurs goalkeeper Luke McGee.

Spurs continued to threaten on the break, and United were fortunate to not be 0-2 down at half-time after Laste Dombaxe fired over from the edge of the penalty area, and Darren McQueen and Alex McQueen also went close.

United began the second half with much more potency, as Donald Love slammed the ball against the post from close range just two minutes after the restart, after James Wilson had fired over. A minute later, and Andreas Periera fired a freekick towards goal that was turned around the post by McGee. The respite would only last thirty seconds for Spurs as the Reds' pressure paid off. Barmby's ball out to Kenji Gorre was well controlled by the young forward, as he held off the attention of Zodel Brown to fire the Reds level from a tight angle on 49 minutes.

Now on level terms, United continued to press forward and again Love came close to getting his name on the scoresheet as his well-struck volley from the edge of the area forced McGee into an excellent save as he clawed the ball around the post. Love picked out Andreas Pereira after a marauding run forward on the right hand side, finding the young Belgian unmarked in the six yard box, but a combination of McQueen and McGee somehow kept the ball out of the net. Pereira was involved again when the Reds did go ahead with 20 minutes remaining, splitting the Spurs defence with a through ball. Wilson did well to stay on his feet after being clipped by McGee, but Kane Vincent-Young couldn't stop the ball from crossing the line and United were deservedly in front.

United's lead was doubled just three minutes later, with Love bombing forward and pulling the ball back for Wilson, whose clever turn and curling left-footed strike from the edge of the box gave Luke McGee no chance in the Spurs goal.

This second goal from Wilson essentially sealed the points for the Reds with a quarter of an hour to go, but it could have got even better for United after a magnificent solo effort from Barmby. The latter hit the side netting after creating an opening for himself with a wonderful pirouette between Dombaxe and Spurs substitute Roman Michael-Percil.

Spurs clipped United's crossbar with the last kick of the game as Dombaxe's free kick beat Gollini, but the Reds were still worthy victors and now table-toppers, two points clear of second-placed Southampton.

United: Gollini, Love, Rowley, Grimshaw, Dalley, Weir, Barmby, Daehli, Wilson, A. Pereira, Gorre. Subs not used: Wilkinson, J. Pereira, Harrop, McNair.

Goals: Onomay 15, Gorre 49, Wilson 72, 75.
