UNDER-18S: UNITED THWART RIVALS WITH LATE EQUALISER

Manchester United and Liverpool shared the spoils at Academy level on Saturday, as the passionate rivalry between the clubs produced another lively contest.

United had the last laugh with a late goal in this league game, as was the case when the sides met on Merseyside recently in the Premier League Cup. On that occasion, Mason Greenwood's extra-time free-kick won the match 3-2 for Neil Ryan's team; this time, Anthony Elanga claimed an 88th-minute equaliser at the Aon Training Complex.

Liverpool had led from the 30th minute following Di’Shon Bernard's own goal and both teams were reduced to ten men before Elanga stepped in.
Both United and Liverpool have suffered their own tragedies in the past and as the young players of both sides lined up at the centre circle, it was also an opportune moment to reflect on the terrible news from Brazil where ten young players in Flamengo's academy, aged between 14 and 16, perished in a dormitory fire at the club’s training facility in Rio de Janeiro.

A good number of devotees were present, despite the bitterly cold wind that was sweeping across the pitch, as the game started with United in the usual home colours whilst Liverpool were kitted out in all-purple.

With a couple of away wins over the arch rivals under their belts, Neil Ryan's United players were targeting a hat-trick of victories against Liverpool but from the onset it was clear that it wasn’t going to be easy.

The opening moments provided little or no evidence of the likely outcome with both teams failing to produce many genuine chances in front of goal. Then, on the half-hour, the purple-clad visitors struck the first blow thanks to full-back Jack Walls, whose shot took a deflection off Bernard before it entered James Thompson’s net.
United needed a reply and very nearly found one in the time that remained of the first half. Mason Greenwood was out of luck on a couple of occasions and Aliou Traore also did his best to test Ben Williams in the Liverpool goal.

Williams was a thorn in the hosts' side shortly after the break when he pulled off two remarkable saves from attempts by his namesake, United skipper Brandon Williams, and defender Teden Mengi, but hopes of a home-team equaliser were raised in the 63rd minute when Liverpool defender Niall Brockwell was sent off after felling D’Mani Mellor.

Not surprisingly, Ryan's Reds started to command possession and Greenwood, Mellor and James Garner all put the Liverpool goal under threat, albeit without success. With four minutes of normal time left, Bernard was red carded to put the teams’ personnel back on a level footing and it appeared that United’s chances of getting some reward from the game had gone.

However, help was at hand and two minutes from the end Elanga weaved his way into the Liverpool area before firing past Williams.

UNDER-18S' SEMI-FINAL IS A LOCAL AFFAIR

Manchester United's Under-18s have a local derby to look forward to on Saturday in the Premier League Cup.

Neil Ryan's boys came from 2-0 down to beat Liverpool 3-2 in the last eight to set up another cracking tie against the Blues, with the match being held at the Etihad Campus.

The 11:00 GMT kick-off must be decided on the day, with extra-time and penalties if required. Middlesbrough and Derby County will compete in the other semi-final.

Season-ticket holders from both teams can access the game by showing their season-ticket card on arrival. MUFC Academy Spectator passes cannot be used to gain access.

MUTV are screening the tie live and will be on air from 10:45 GMT.

United drew 1-1 against Liverpool in our last league fixture as it remains extremely tight at the top of the northern table.

Everton lead the way with 31 points from 14 games, the same as Liverpool who have a match in hand, with the Reds a further point back in third, having played 14 times. Derby are in fourth, on 29 points, after 13 fixtures.

UNDER-18S BEATEN BY CITY IN SEMI-FINALS

Manchester United’s hopes of reaching the Under-18 Premier League Cup final were dashed after going down to a 3-0 defeat against Manchester City at Etihad Campus on Saturday.

Following the defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Youth Cup, this was another route to cup glory, but it wasn’t to be against a Blues side that were more clinical in front of goal.

Neil Ryan’s lads are still in the thick of the championship race and, of course, many of the youngsters will hope to be involved in the resumption of the UEFA Youth League.

Both teams were wearing black armbands and the game was preceded by a minute’s silence in memory of Gordon Banks, England’s 1966 World Cup-winning goalkeeper and also, particularly for United’s players, staff and supporters, Eric Harrison, United’s legendary youth coach, who both sadly passed away earlier this week.

There was a decent crowd lining the perimeter fence at kick-off time and the weather was more than acceptable with blue skies and fluffy white clouds decorating the scene.

Manchester derby matches are always the same, whatever the level, and this junior cup-tie was no different with both sides showing early on that they meant business. United and City juniors face each other regularly but there was added spice attached this match in Clayton with a place in a national final at stake.

It soon developed into a feisty contest with full-blooded challenges becoming the order of the day.

One heavy tackle left skipper Brandon Williams struggling and, after trying his best to run off the injury, he eventually succumbed to the knock and was replaced by Reece Devine, who appeared against his former club.

By this time, the home side had taken the lead when, in the 17th minute, Felix Nmecha unleashed a low drive that gave United keeper James Thompson little chance of stopping.

Further goalscoring chances were few and far between with Aliou Traore’s fierce drive that fizzed past the post a notable exception, as United were without leading scorer Mason Greenwood due to injury, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also admitting on Friday he would have been under consideration for first-team selection.

United’s task of forcing a way back into the tie suffered a blow, in the 55th minute, when Fisayo Dele-Bashiru rifled home City’s second goal.

The visitos' requirement to push forward in search of openings intensified as time wore on and, we they were enjoying more possession, the end product continued to elude the Reds with Large Ramazani going close.

Then, with nine minutes remaining, any hopes of a fightback were finally extinguished when Nmecha took advantage of a stretched United defence to hit home his second, and City’s third, goal of the afternoon.

UNDER-18S HELD TO A DRAW AT BLACKBURN

Ethan Laird scored on his return from injury and Mipo Odubeko netted a debut goal but Manchester United's Under-18s had to settle for a point against Blackburn Rovers at Brockhall on Saturday.

Laird's rifled finish and Odubeko's composed finish had the much-changed Reds two goals ahead at the break, but a spirited fightback by the Lancashire hosts saw them claw their way back into the game to earn a share of the spoils.

Neil Ryan named an experimental line-up which showed eight changes from the Premier League Cup semi-final defeat at Manchester City last weekend, with Teden Mengi, Ethan Galbraith and Largie Ramazani the only survivors.

Jacob Carney started in United’s number one shirt and he was joined in the starting line-up by Oliver Denham, Reece Devine, Mark Helm and Odubeko, all of whom were embarking on the next stage of their progress through the ranks.

The weather has to get a mention, because it was like an early summer’s day at Brockhall with virtually clear blue skies and mildly warm sunshine. Some would say perfect conditions for football and anyone who has attended a game here in winter would for sure vouch for those sentiments.

Playing against Rovers at Brockhall has always been a daunting proposition and the early exchanges of this contest served as a quick reminder that there was no chance of the teams taking their time to ease themselves into the game.

Skipper Mengi's last words before the first whistle were “Come on lads, let’s have a bright start,” - and that is just what he got as the Reds picked up the gauntlet from the off. It wasn’t immediately noticeable that United’s personnel had undergone a considerable re-shuffle, for it was quickly apparent that the lads were good and ready for the fray.

And an early goal, scored by defender Laird in the 11th minute, helped to boost confidence and quell any nerves that were jangling. The adventurous right-back, on his first appearance since November after injury, saw his initial cross blocked before he advanced towards the byline and fired a low shot past Jordan Eastham in the home goal.

Ten minutes later, Ryan's side doubled the lead when Odubeko seized upon defensive uncertainty to score his first goal on his debut at Under-18s level with a composed finish.

Harvey Neville - son of Phil, the former United defender and current manager of the England Women’s team - took to the field in the second half to replace Laird, who had taken a couple of heavy knocks during an impressive first-half performance on his return.

Playing in their instantly recognisable blue and white shirts, Rovers started the second half with a spring in their step, but United's defence were equal to the threat and Carney was proving to be a considerable obstacle to the home side's ambitions.

United weren’t enjoying as much success as in the first half and, in the 63rd minute, the lead was halved when Chanka Zimba converted a cutback from close range to put his side back in the picture.

In the minutes that followed, Rovers continued to press and there is no doubt that, but for Carney’s excellent exhibition in the art of goalkeeping, the home side would have been level sooner.

Carney made several terrific saves but even he could do nothing to prevent Rovers winger Sam Durrant from scoring the equaliser with 10 minutes to play.

Both teams had opportunities to claim all three points in the dying moments as Mengi went close with a header and Galbraith saw a rifled effort from outside of the box saved by Eastham. But the Reds had to make do with a point from a game in which the squad will take plenty from in their continued development.

UNDER-18S CLAIM POINT AGAINST THE BAGGIES

Manchester United’s younger-than-usual Under-18s had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Aon Training complex on Saturday morning.

In the end, Neil Ryan and his staff were probably pleased to claim a share of the spoils against an accomplished Albion side.

The visitors, particularly after the break, were pressing more than United but they had to come from behind twice to force a draw.

There was really good turn-out for this game with at least a couple of hundred supporters gathered alongside the near touchline and in the two little stands at either end of the Under-18s’ pitch.

The sun was shining brightly, but there was also a wintry chill in the air, but that hadn’t prevented the die-hards from arriving to give the juniors their usual unwavering support. It was similar scene on the adjacent Under-16s’ field where Albion were also the visiting team.

The game took a little time to get going, with neither side showing much in the way of serious attempts on goal.

Most notable of the scoring opportunities were down to West Brom’s Zak Brown who, with an ounce of luck, could have put his side in the lead. And, a few minutes later, it was the Reds’ turn to threaten when Connor Stanley found himself in a good position but his shot found the wrong side of net guarded by Albion’s Josh Griffiths.

United started to command more of the ball as the match approached half-time, but it was Albion who nearly grabbed the when Stanley Asomungha skied his shot over Jacob Carney's crossbar.

Then, with the seconds ticking away to the break Ethan Galbraith sent through an inch-perfect pass to Dion McGhee, who took the ball in his stride before rattling home in fine style. Remarkably, there was still time for Albion to go with an ace of levelling, with only a fantastic goal-line block by Lukasz Bejger stopping Stanley Asomugha from claiming the equaliser.

The visitors were denied again in the opening moments of the second half when keeper Carney’s acrobatic save prevented Alex Gilbert’s angled drive from reaching its target.

The Baggies were growing in confidence and it came as little surprise when, on the hour, Gilbert put the team from the West Midlands on terms, when he was left in too much space at the far post, worked his way past Harvey Neville and fired in.

United were required to dig deep as the visitors continued hold the balance of possession and, as a result, they were more active in the danger areas. However, McGhee's free-kick from the left found the imposing Teden Mengi in the box and his ball towards goal was diverted into his own net by Brown.

Shoretire, who has only just turned 15, and Iestyn Hughes, who is a year older, came on for their debuts, while another Under-16s prospect, Mipo Odubeko, who had been denied when well positioned in the first half, bent an effort just wide.

Gilbert grabbed his second with three minutes left, when the ball was not cleared inside the box, and the visitors applied late pressure during a lengthy period of stoppage time in a bid for a winner. However, United stood firm to earn a point.

UNDER-18S CLAIM TERRIFIC WIN ON TYNESIDE

Neil Ryan’s young Reds claimed maximum points on Saturday afternoon, with an impressive 3-1 triumph at Newcastle United's windswept training ground in Benton.

Three goals up by half-time, thanks to a couple from Charlie McCann and a very special solo effort from Anthony Elanga, the visitors rarely looked in trouble in the latter stages and secured a result that sustains the club's title challenge in the Under-18 Premier League North.

Conditions in the North East were anything but ideal with heavy rain having soaked the pitch. Such was the pre-match concern that Newcastle officials organised an inspection to confirm that the playing surface was safe and suitable.

That must have come as a huge relief to the Reds' players and staff who had made an early start for the lengthy trek to Tyneside. The objective was to complete a hat-trick of victories over the Magpies for the season, having grabbed three points with a 3-0 win in the league and also a 1-0 success in the League Cup, both at the Aon Training Complex.

In blustery and damp conditions, the match took some time to catch fire with neither side finding it easy to negotiate a route through to their opponents’ goal. However, despite the adverse weather, the two sets of players persevered and the Reds slowly began to claim the lion’s share of possession before gaining a first reward in the 22nd minute.

Largie Ramazani had looked lively and adventurous so it came as no surprise when his excellent pass from the left found McCann, who steadied himself before slotting home past Newcastle ‘keeper Will Brown.

It was the beginning of a spell in the game that saw the Reds score twice more before half-time to get well on track for the victory.

Eight minutes from the interval, McCann put United 2-0 up with his second goal of the game; it was almost a re-run of his first, after executing a one-two with Ramazani.

It was looking good for the Reds but the prospects of success were ratcheted up a good few notches on the stroke of half-time when Elanga scored a wonderful solo goal after weaving his way past four Magpies’ defenders before tapping the ball into Brown’s net.

It was hardly a surprise that the Reds approached the second half with sky-high confidence, following a fabulously productive opening 45 minutes.

The three-goal cushion meant Ryan's side had the luxury of not having to force the proceedings; nevertheless, the visitors continued on the offensive and several players – including Ramazani on a couple of occasions – were out of luck in front of goal.

Fourteen minutes from the close, Newcastle were given a ray of hope when Elliot Anderson, a 16-year-old Scot, reduced the arrears after showing terrific footwork on his way to emulating Elanga’s earlier deeds.

UNDER-18S DRAW WITH SUNDERLAND

Manchester United's Under-18s had to settle for a draw against Sunderland, who scored a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser to snatch a point at the Aon Training Complex on Saturday afternoon.

After Sean Kennedy's early opener for Sunderland, goals from Dion McGhee (2) and Largie Ramazani looked to have earned victory for Neil Ryan's side and boosted our chances of winning the Premier League North title. But the visitors staged a late comeback through goals from substitute Tom Scothern and, deep into stoppage time, Ryan Gooch.

It was a beautiful early afternoon at Carrington, with bright sunshine illuminating the scene as Sunderland, wearing a changed strip of all black, kicked off.

Warm and virtually wind free, it was perfect conditions for football and also ideal for the die-hard spectators who always attend, whatever the weather.

When the teams met earlier in the season on Wearside, it proved to be something of a one-sided affair with United netting seven goals without reply - and the Reds began this return fixture in the mood that suggested they were about to embark on another goal-spree.

The young Reds dominated during the opening 10 minutes but then the visitors made one of their rare forays into United territory count by claiming the afternoon’s first goal.

Winger Sean Kennedy was the scorer of the goal which came against the run of play, beating keeper Jacob Carney with a well-struck low shot following a Sunderland corner.

However, Ryan's side were soon back on the offensive and netted twice in three minutes to turn the game on its head and go into half-time with the lead.

A splendid three-man move involving Arnau Puigmal and Brandon Williams ended with McGhee gleefully stabbing home from close range as he scored for the second successive game.

The second goal was equally eye-catching but in complete contrast to the first as Anthony Elanga’s blistering pace saw him outstrip the Black Cats’ chasing defenders. He unleashed a shot which was saved by Sunderland keeper Jack Newman but Largie Ramazani was in the right place and charged with the simple task of putting his side into the lead from close range.

United going in at the break 2-1 in the lead was totally in keeping with the overall share of possession during the opening 45 minutes.

Sunderland could be excused for approaching the second game with a touch of trepidation, after suffering that United goal-fest when the teams last faced each other. But, to their credit, they composed themselves and enjoyed a much improved second-half display.

United still looked menacing and capable of scoring more goals - which was proved when we moved into a two-goal lead on the hour mark.

Sunderland defender Patrick Almond fouled Elanga, whose pace caused problems all afternoon, and McGhee coolly slotted home the resulting penalty.

That goal looked to have sealed the victory for United, but Sunderland had other ideas and, with 11 minutes of normal remaining, they were back in the contest thanks to a good finish from Tom Scothern, who had come onto the pitch from the bench moments earlier.

Referee Karl Buckley decided that there was to be six minutes of added time, which eventually stretched to nine, and it proved too much for the Reds.

The visitors struck with seconds remaining to snatch a point when Ryan Gooch fired in the equaliser, which struck keeper Carney before nestling in the net.

UNDER-18S: MANCHESTER CITY 2 UNITED 2

Local honours were even and points were shared as United and City battled out a 2-2 draw at Etihad Campus on Saturday.

The Blues twice led in a feisty match, watched by at least a couple of hundred spectators on a bitterly cold day in East Manchester, but United fought back both times with goals from Ethan Galbraith and Dylan Levitt (penalty) to take home a point.

City had their ranks reduced in the first half when central defender Sammy Robinson was given his marching orders following a clash with Brandon Williams.
United were forced to batten down the hatches in the early stages of this 'mini-derby' as the Blues pushed forward looking to strike the first blow.

The hosts very nearly succeeded in that mission at the conclusion of one attack that saw them make at least four attempts to squeeze the ball home but United’s defence stood firm and the danger passed.

However, City were not to be denied for much longer and they duly took the lead in the 17th minute, with a goal scored by D’Margio Wright-Phillips.

The Blues were reduced to ten men in the 34th minute when Robinson was red-carded following an altercation with United’s Williams. Many players were involved in the ensuing scuffle, which also resulted in Williams and Largie Ramazani being booked.

The Reds were quick to make capital out of having the extra man, grabbing the equaliser within four minutes. Williams sent over a great cross from the right and Galbraith found the net with a terrific finish.

United goalkeeper Jacob Carney then made two fantastic saves to keep City from regaining the lead as the first half was drawing to a close.
United fell behind again within four minutes of the restart, when two of City’s outstanding performers combined to score their side’s second goal. Wright-Phillips provided the pass and skipper Ben Knight took advantage of a defensive lapse to put his side back in front.

As time passed, the Reds gradually began to use the imbalance in personnel to better effect and as a result the number of opportunities began to increase. City ‘keeper Louis Moulden certainly earned his wages with a string of good saves and the Blues’ defence also did well to preserve their team’s lead.

The clock looked to be working against United but, in the 81st minute, defender Reece Devine was felled in City's area and referee Adam Brown showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The Reds had been battling hard to claim something from the contest and that was achieved when Levitt confidently placed his penalty past Moulden.

Added time amounted to ten minutes, after two players had lengthy treatment on the field before continuing, but even that wasn’t long enough for either side to grab the winner.

UNDER-18S EDGED OUT IN NINE-GOAL THRILLER

What a fantastic goal–fest of a game this was to conclude Manchester United Under-18s' Premier League season with nine goals scored and Neil Ryan’s lads fighting back from being three goals adrift at the break to almost grab a point.

D’Mani Mellor took the personal honours for United with a fine hat-trick, while Dion McGhee was also on target from the penalty spot to set up a tense finale.
The Aon Training Complex ground-staff were rendered temporarily redundant ahead of the match because, with rain teeming constantly from leaden skies, they were not called on to operate the sprinkler system that normally irrigates the playing surface.

There was no doubting the weather predictions on this occasion but the atrocious conditions did little to dampen the enthusiasm and urgency of both teams. It was obvious from the outset that this was going to a good contest to bring down the curtain on what has been a largely enjoyable campaign.

Within moments of the start, both teams had been busy in attack and it came as little surprise when, in the ninth minute, United found the net after a great run down the right from Anthony Elanga paved the way for Mellor to claim the goal.

All looked set fair for the Reds but that was all to change over the next half an hour as the visitors turned the game completely on its head, scoring four goals without reply.

Top scorer Ellis Simms grabbed the equaliser, seven minutes after Mellor’s goal, and, soon afterwards, Tom Cannon swooped to put the Toffees in front.

United hadn’t been overrun but Everton certainly looked menacing when they moved into attack and that was confirmed when they scored two further goals inside the first half’s final five minutes. Jon Anderson added a third for the Merseysiders and, just seconds before the break, Tyler Onyango scored to send his side in at half-time with a three goal lead.

United’s chances, to say the least, looked distinctly gloomy but hopes were lifted midway through the second half when Mellor scored his second of the game after receiving a pass from Aliou Traore and finishing well.

Torrential showers kept dropping from the sky in torrents while the game continued to rain goals. Onyango stretched the advantage to three again with his second of the game with 17 minutes remaining on the clock and that should have been game over.

That goal appeared to ended any hopes United had of pulling this one out of the fire but, barely three minutes later, Mellor completed his hat-trick to give his side another lifeline. And, when McGhee converted from penalty spot after Brandon Williams had been fouled, the fightback was back on with eight minutes left.

Try as they might, United couldn’t find just one more goal needed to prevent Everton from moving above them into third place in the final table.

United: Thompson; Elanga (Stanley 87), Bernard, Mengi, Williams; Traore, Galbraith, McCann (Helm 70); McGhee, Mellor, Ramazani.

Substitutes not used: Mastny, Bejger, Neville.

Scorers: Mellor 9,68,76 McGhee 82 (pen) | Simms 16, Cannon 21, Anderson 41, Onyango 45,73
