Default Re: [LC] Manchester City vs Manchester United

Do NOT leave Phil Jones in a back two, beware the elusive false nine and target Manchester City's rusty left flank… here's what Manchester United must do to pull off a monumental Carabao Cup turnaround (or at least avoid another hiding)

* Manchester United have a mountain to climb in the Carabao Cup semi-finals
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men must overturn a 3-1 deficit from the first leg
* They were pulled apart by their neighbours at Old Trafford three weeks ago
* They will also be without their main goal threat Marcus Rashford for second leg

After their 3-1 victory at Old Trafford in the first leg, it will taking something special to stop Manchester City reaching the final of the Carabao Cup for the third consecutive season.

However, having already won at the Etihad this campaign, rivals Manchester United are better placed than most to turn the tide.

At the very least, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side will be looking to avoid a repeat of the calamitous 35-minute spell in the first half that nearly saw the tie slip from their grasp entirely.

Here, Sportsmail looks at the key areas where United must improve from the first leg if they are to stand a chance of turning the tide.

Manchester United have a mountain to climb in the second-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final

Learn to cope with City's striker-less frontline

Manchester United endured a torrid opening 35 minutes in the first-leg as they were pulled apart by City's front three.

Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling pulled United's backline all over the park, with Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof simply failing to cope with the movement of Pep's dynamic front three.

That was evident throughout a first half, when dropping off to recieve the ball afforded the trio plenty of time.

Solskjaer will need his back-line to be a lot more switched on to the threat, should City once again opt to start without a recognised striker.

Drop deeper at the back

Too often in that opening half on January 7, Manchester United defenders were turning and sprinting back towards their own goal after being caught out too high up the pitch.

The pace was too much for Lindelof and Jones, who were forced to dive into tackles at the last minute, such was their difficulty at keeping up with the play.

City's second and third goals came from exploiting a high line that left acres of space in behind the red shirts. Riyad Mahrez was first to take advantage - rounding David de Gea after latching on to Bernardo Silva's through ball.

The third was the result of United being caught out on the counter, with Brandon Williams failing in his bid to get back and prevent the attack from gathering pace.

It would be natural for United to play more conservatively away from home, but given the task at the Etihad, that might not be a given.

Switch to three at the back

While United need the goals, it is important they can keep things tight at the back, to stop their workload for the evening growing.

Solskjaer experimented with three at the back against Liverpool and Tranmere of late, and will have been encouraged by the performance against the Reds, if not the 2-0 scoreline.

With the return of Harry Maguire from injury, United certainly have the options to move to a back three in order to cope on what will most likely be a busy night for the defence.

Eric Bailly is back in the squad, which will come as a boost for Solskjaer, but a lack of minutes means it would be a huge ask to through him straight into the action against City.

If there are question marks over Jones, there is still the option of moving Luke Shaw into the three, allowing Brandon Williams to start at left wing-back.

Attack with pace

United have to score at the Etihad. Twice.

Not the most straightforward task - and at least they do not have to contend with the complication of away goals - but they do have the added benefit of knowing they're capable of it.

On their Premier League visit to City in December, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial grabbed the goals as Solskjaer's men picked up an unlikely three points.

One of United's biggest weapons that day was the pace and directness. Even their consolation in the first-leg at Old Trafford came courtesy of quickly transitioning the ball from defence to attack in the middle of the park after Kevin De Bruyne's loose ball.

There is plenty of pace available to Solskjaer, with Martial, Marcus Greenwood and Daniel James all ready to go.

Anthony Martial's pace will be key to unlocking City's defence on Wednesday evening

Target that left-back area

There are few weaknesses in City's squad, so United have to make the most of any chink in their armour.

One area that might provide some joy for the Red Devils is their right flank. City have used three different players in that position in their last three matches and it's evident that there is no individual trusted to hold down the position full-time.

Benjamin Mendy, Angelino and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all been deployed in recent games and whoever starts on Wednesday night will do so without a run in the first team under their belt.

It provides the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka with a target to potentially terrorise.

Find someone to replace Rashford

OK, we're stating the bleeding obvious here, but this is an absolute must if United are to have any hope of overcoming the first-leg deficit.

In the two meetings between these sides already this season, no player in red has inflicted more damage on Pep Guardiola's men than the England striker – who won and scored a penalty in their Premier League victory at the Etihad, before grabbing the consolation at Old Trafford three weeks ago.

His absence with a broken back has had huge ramifications for United, who have failed to score in the two league matches since Rashford's absence was confirmed.

The lack of his pace and direct style blunts Solskjaer's attack and leaves a massive void. Anthony Martial has been tasked with leading the line in his absence, and a reprisal of his own goalscoring performance at the Etihad would not go a miss. Mason Greenwood does provide another option, too.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Man United need the 'perfect game' to overturn 3-1 deficit against Man City and reach Carabao Cup final as he urges players to summon PSG spirit

* Man United must overturn a 3-1 first-leg deficit against City to reach the final
* Marcus Rashford's consolation goal at Old Trafford offers a glimmer of hope
* But Solskjaer's side were outclassed for large chunks of the first leg
* Manager admits they will need a flawless performance to get the better of City
* But Solskjaer urged his players to take inspiration from PSG win last season
* United overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit with a 3-1 away win in Paris

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Manchester United need the 'perfect game' to beat Manchester City on Wednesday night and reach the Carabao Cup final.

United trail 3-1 from the first leg of the semi-final at Old Trafford three weeks ago as they prepare to face their neighbours again at the Etihad.

Solskjaer admits his team have a mountain to climb and need a performance on a par with their famous Champions League comeback against Paris Saint-Germain last season to get to the final at Wembley on March 1.

'It has to be a perfect performance to win with two goals against such a good team away from home,' said Solskjaer.

'For us, it's not about away goals, we just need to score two more than them and when it happens, how it happens, it would be good not to concede first because that makes it less difficult.

'It looked like it was over at half-time (at Old Trafford). I have to say the second part of that first half they outplayed us for a while and it's hard but we got back in it.

'We've got to go into the memory bank and think PSG. We've done it against good teams before and that gives us hope and the game in December gives us hope.

'We've done amazing things before at this club and the PSG game, for me, is a very, very good example of how you can make a two-goal deficit work in your favour. We need the first goal.'

United won 2-1 in the league at the Etihad in December but will have to face the cup holders and Premier League champions without the injured Marcus Rashford – who scored their goal in the first leg – and Scott McTominay.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits his Manchester United side need the 'perfect game' to overturn a 3-1 deficit and overcome Manchester City to reach the Carabao Cup final. United were outclassed by Manchester City in the first leg of the semi-final, losing 3-1 at home

'They're getting players back as well,' he added. 'We hit them last time when they were struggling a bit and since then they've played really well.

'We've lost Scott and Marcus since that game, and we're a little bit lighter in the playing department but we can't just defend. We have to keep the ball and make them run after the ball.'

Nemanja Matic is a slight doubt for the game after picking up a knock in the 6-0 FA Cup win at Tranmere on Sunday.

'He had to come off at half-time and has played loads of football so hopefully we can get him back on the pitch tomorrow,' said Solskjaer.

Manchester City 0-1 Mancheseter United (3-2 agg) - PLAYER RATINGS: Fred continues his renaissance at the Etihad as Rodri struggles with the defensive side of his game

* Manchester United beat City 1-0 but lost 3-2 on aggregate in the Carabao Cup
* Joao Cancelo and Rodri both failed to impress for the hosts on Wednesday night
* Fred is finding consistency, while David de Gea looked back to his best early on

Manchester United earned a 1-0 victory against bitter rivals City on Wednesday night, but it will be Pep Guardiola's side who line up for the Carabao Cup final.

Nemanja Matic's strike was not enough for the Red Devils, with City progressing to face Aston Villa at Wembley after a 3-2 triumph on aggregate.

Sportsmail's JACK GAUGHAN was at The Etihad to rate the performances of both sets of players.

MANCHESTER UNITED (3-4-3)

David de Gea - 8

A string of fine early saves kept this goalless as United just about kept themselves afloat.

Victor Lindelof - 7

Held United’s defensive line even when faced with plenty of City runners.

David de Gea makes a fine save to keep out a header from Sergio Aguero early on in the game

Harry Maguire – 7.5

Battled Aguero and organised United as a captain should. One major blemish went unpunished.

Luke Shaw - 7

Seems to be relishing the left-sided centre half role when called upon. Improving his positional awareness.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 7

The right back had the measure of Sterling for much of this and defended in typical stoic fashion.

Maguire slides in to win the ball from England team-mate Sterling during the first half

Nemanja Matic – 6.5

The goalscorer held his own as City pushed for an opener but eventually sent off for persistent tactical fouling.

Fred – 8.5
Another calm display, unhurried in possession and broke up play intelligently. Becoming more consistent.

Brazilian midfielder Fred, pictured tackling De Bruyne, impressed again in midfield

Brandon Williams – 6.5

Willing runner up and down the left flank all night and doubled up with Shaw when required.

Mason Greenwood - 6

Found it difficult to get into the game before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sacrificed the youngster at half-time.

Nemanja Matic punches the air in celebration after scoring to give United the lead on the night

Anthony Martial - 6

Led the line and was starved of service unless United tried to hit the hosts on the break.

Jesse Lingard – 5.5

An industrious performance, although guilty of gifting possession back to City at crucial moments.

Anthony Martial holds off Nicolas Otamendi during the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg

Subs: Daniel James (for Greenwood, 46) – 6, Andreas Pereira (for Lingard, 65) – 6, Juan Mata (for Shaw, 79)

Subs not used: Romero, Bailly, Jones, Dalot

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – 7

Has his methods in the bigger games and United ultimately played to their strengths.

Referee: Kevin Friend – 7

Allowed the game to flow when it needed to and got the big calls correct.

Default Re: [LC] Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United

'It was never a sending off': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blasts 'joke' red card for goalscorer Nemanja Matic after Manchester United exited Carabao Cup - and pundits Micah Richards and Darren Fletcher agree

* Manchester City made it past Mancester United in their Carabao Cup semi-final
* Nemanja Matic made it 3-2 on aggregate but was then sent off late in the game
* Matic was sent off for fouls on City's Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan
* United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labelled the decision to send him off a 'joke'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer labelled Nemanja Matic's dismissal a 'joke' following Manchester United's Carabao Cup semi-final defeat by Manchester City.

Matic was sent off in the second half for a second yellow card when he blocked City's Ilkay Gundogan.

The Serbian midfielder, who had put United back into the game after scoring in the first half, received his first booking when he fouled Riyad Mahrez.

Solskjaer felt referee Kevin Friend and his fellow officials had made the wrong call in sending him off.

He said: 'Of course it is hard to come here and score a goal with 11 never mind 10. It was never a sending off. Absolutely for me a joke. How many times did they foul us?'

Solskjaer added: 'The first one's not a yellow card. He's unlucky. I disagree with that decision.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left frustrated after Nemanja Matic was sent off on Wednesday. Matic was sent off for a second yellow card against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium

'We had a chance towards the end but of course that made it more difficult.'

Both Darren Fletcher and Micah Richards, who were appearing as pundits during Sky Sports' coverage of the game, agreed with the United manager.

Former United midfielder Fletcher felt referee Friend's decision to send Matic off was poor, particularly given he felt the midfielder hadn't made contact with Mahrez.

'I don’t think Matic should have been sent off,' Fletcher said. 'The first one is very harsh because he doesn’t make any contact.

'And the second one is clever from Gundogan, I don’t think there’s enough contact there and the referee’s bought it.'

Former City defender Richards felt it was a crucial moment which resulted in one of United's better performers being sent off, and suggested Friend didn't take into context the nature of the fixture.

He said: 'That moment was pivotal to the game. I thought Matic was brilliant today and I don’t think either of those should have been a yellow card. If you’re going to give fouls for that, every player is going to get booked every single week.

'It’s a derby, sometimes in these games you want to see challenges let go. It spoiled the game.'
