Michael Carrick has no qualms about fighting Bastian Schweinsteiger and Moran Schneiderlin for a place in the Manchester United first team this season.

After complaining about a lack of cover in midfield last season, United manager Louis van Gaal spent more than £40million on Schweinsteiger, who arrived from Bayern Munich, and former Southampton man Schneiderlin this summer.

That means Carrick is no longer the automatic pick he was last season.

The 33-year-old has no problem competing with the new arrivals though and hopes their introduction will be a positive move for the club as they look to compete on four fronts.

'You want the best players here, and it's good for the squad, for the team,' Carrick said.

'Morgan is good player. He has done terrific. It's another step for him in his career and there's no better place to be.

'We all know what Basti brings. He is a terrific player and he'll have a big influence on us going forward.'

Despite the fanfare surrounding his signing, Schweinsteiger has failed to impress so far on United's pre-season tour of the United States.

The German World Cup winner is yet to start a game, with Van Gaal preferring to use Carrick and Schneiderlin as holding midfielders in the 4-2-3-1 formation he has used in the three games so far.

Schweinsteiger looked relatively comfortable in the first game against Club America in Seattle, but Van Gaal described the midfielder's performance against San Jose Earthquakes as 'bad' and he missed the 3-1 win over Barcelona with a minor injury.

The 30-year-old is fit to feature in United's final game of the tour against Paris Saint-Germain in Chicago in the early hours of Thursday, however.

Another win would give United a 100 per cent record from their American tour. Although he missed it through injury, Carrick is aware United won all their pre-season matches last season before accumulating just 13 points from their opening 10 Premier League matches.

'You can gauge what you can from these pre-season games, but Tottenham on the first day of the season is where you're judged the most, and we're well aware of that even after three good results,' the United midfielder said.

That said, Carrick thinks United are in a much better position heading into the new season than they were 12 months ago.

'The manager has been here a longer time and we're now used to his way of playing,' Carrick said.

'We've improved as a team by understanding his way. I think we're stronger in numbers, in strength and depth and in quality this year.'

Goalkeeper Sergio Romero is available to face PSG but may not do so having spent just two days with his new team-mates since signing a three-year deal with United.

Angel di Maria is still absent from the tour amid claims he is close to a move to the French champions.

There will be no chance to ask Van Gaal about Di Maria's situation on the eve of the game as United have decided not to hold a pre-match press conference in Illinois.

Entah kenapa, ada feeling ada 1 pemain tengah akan dilepas. Plus dilema posisi Daley Blind nanti, apa DMF atau CB atau malah full back. Di Ajax memang dia sering jadi CB, di timnas jadi fullback, musim lalu DMF. Baca dari komentar LvG yang ingin ada CB yang berkaki kiri, mungkin Blind bakal dialih fungsikan disana bersaing dengan Rojo atau malah ke kiri bersaing dengan Shaw.

Soal Bastian- Morgan- Michael, asal mereka bebas cedera siapapun yang berperan sebagai DMF saya sih PD aja. Secara pribadi ingin melihat LvG memainkan pola 4-3-3 dengan dengan Herrera didepan Michael - Morgan/ Bastian. Nanti yang jadi pelapis Herrera itu Perreira/ Fellaini.

Kalau boleh jujur lebih ingin lihat duet Smalling-Rojo/ Smalling-Jones di CB. Nahh untuk Blind, lebih ingin lihat dia ada di posisi DMF, tapi opsi disana terlalu banyak.. Ahh dulu pilihannya cuma Carrick, kini sudah ada 5

Kalau benar pakai 4-3-3 lebih ingin lihat Schneiderlin-Carrick dengan Herrera sebagai AMF atau Fellaini di EPL.

Untuk 4-3-3 di UCL lebih ingin lihat Schweinsteiger-Carrick-Blind dengan Carrick sebagai DMF murni, 23 & 17 sebagai CMF.

Depannya terserah siapa dari Rooney, Depay, Di Maria (kalau bertahan), Mata, Januzaj, Wilson, Young & Perreira/ Lingard.

Despite the added competition in the Manchester United squad, Michael Carrick has praised the arrivals of Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The duo, who joined from Southampton and Bayern Munich, made their debuts in the narrow win over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

Carrick believes that the arrivals can only benefit the United squad, as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title this season.

And the 34-year-old has been impressed with what he's seen from Schneiderlin over the past few years, believing that he'll be a real asset to Louis van Gaal's squad.

The former Saints midfielder made a solid start to his United career and hardly put a foot wrong on Saturday lunchtime alongside Carrick in the centre of the park.

He said: 'Morgan has been at Southampton for a number of years and has been a very good player in the Premier League.

'Over the last three or four years, he has had some great performances and we have all seen that.'

World Cup winner Schweinsteiger joined the club with a big reputation and Carrick is confident he can adapt to the vigorous Premier League.

The German came off the bench despite lacking in match fitness and showed glimpses of why Van Gaal decided to stump up £14million for his services.

'Basti is slightly different. He is new to England, but at the same time we all know exactly what he is all about.

'He's achieved so much. It's like with any new signing, the boys ask questions and you try to pick things up from their experiences and try to learn from it.'

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots believes Manchester United are failing to get the best out of midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The 28-year-old has failed to reach the heights he achieved under David Moyes at Everton since following the Scottish manager to Old Trafford for £27.5m in 2014.

He has made 28 appearances under Louis van Gaal this season, being deployed in a number of different roles.

Over the last two seasons he has been used across the midfield, as an emergency striker and even as a central defender.

Wilmots, however, has claimed Fellaini will continue to struggle in Manchester until he is played in his natural position, as a box-to-box midfielder.

'I know him by heart,' he told The Times. 'In my eyes, he is a box-to-box [midfielder]. He could also play as No. 6 by himself, but not with a partner.

'He has the ability to play on the offensive too, as Everton used him. He is the best goal scorer I have. He is a very good player with a unique profile, but he is a player who must be used taking his qualities into account.'

Fellaini will be in action on Tuesday as Belgium take on Portugal in Leiria in an international friendly that has had to be moved from it's original Brussels venue due to last week's terror attacks.
