Default Manchester United on EL 2015/2016

We'll pay you to do better in Europa League! Premier League clubs discuss financial bonus to protect Champions League places

* Premier League sides concerned at losing fourth Champions League spot
* UEFA's co-efficient ranking sees England under threat from Italy
* All 20 Premier League sides discussed financial reward for Europa League
* Proposals still in early stages with no vote having yet taken place

English clubs could be offered financial incentives to try harder in the Europa League amid fears that the Premier League will lose one of its Champions League qualification places.

The idea was discussed at the last meeting between representatives of all 20 top-flight clubs.

UEFA run a co-efficient table, judging success in European club competitions, to determine how many Champions League places are offered to each country.

Manchester United's poor Champions League performance this season has seen them drop into the last 32 of the Europa League as they train in Midtjylland ahead of their first leg clash

There are concerns that the Italian Serie A, following strong showings in the Champions League and Europa League in recent seasons, will overtake England and take the fourth qualification place from them.

The proposal remains in the very early stages and it is not an issue that has been voted upon by the league’s clubs.

It is thought that the Premier League’s TV rights money is so great that unless it was a sizeable monetary incentive the clubs would still concentrate on their league position.

mengingat persaingan masuk 4 besar alias zona UCL makin ketat & permainan United tidak stabil, ada baiknya fokus untuk menjuarai EL biar bisa lolos ke UCL musim berikutnya walaupun di EL sendiri banyak pesaing

Manchester United fans protest against £71 ticket with 'Welcome to Scamdinavia' banner... then suffer from restricted views in Europa League defeat by Midtjylland

* Man United were in Denmark to play Midtjylland in the Europa League
* Fans protested £71 ticket prices with 'Welcome to Scamdinavia' banner
* The price was considerably higher than Danish club's usual £15 ticket cost
* Southampton fans paid just £22 there in Europa League back in August
* United were beaten 2-1 after Memphis Depay had opened the scoring

Manchester United supporters in Herning protested against rip-off ticket prices for the Europa League fixture ahead of their team's 2-1 defeat against Danish side Midtjylland.

Fans unfurled a 'Welcome to Scamdinavia' banner in the town centre in protest at the £71 cost of their tickets for the last-32, first-leg game at the MCH Arena, in which the hosts came from behind to take a slender advantage to Old Trafford.

Despite the extortionate price, some supporters had a restricted view of the action - with fencing and netting between themselves and the pitch - as Memphis Depay's scrappy opener was cancelled out by strikes from Pione Sisto and substitute Paul Onuachu to heap more pressure on manager Louis van Gaal.

Manchester United Supporters Trust CEO Duncan Drasdo tweeted during the game: 'Aha - the £71 ticket view brought to you in association with @hankook @fedex @amstel @adidas @unicredit #brandvalues '

Manchester United supporters in Denmark are protesting rip-off £71 ticket prices for their Europa League tie with Midtjylland on Thursday night

Chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) Duncan Drasdo posted a picture on his Twitter account of his view during the match, which was severely restricted by fencing at the stadium.

Drasdo tweeted during the game: 'Aha - the £71 ticket view brought to you in association with @hankook @fedex @amstel @adidas @unicredit #brandvalues '.

There were even suggestions that security inside the ground tried to confiscate the 'Scamdinavia' banner protesting against the price of tickets as the travelling supporters were given very little to cheer about during another poor performance.

As many as 800 United fans made the journey but they were forced to pay substantially more than the £22 it cost Southampton followers when they played the Danish champions back in August.

Tickets for Midtjylland's home games usually cost £15 but club officials have defended the price hike.

Van Gaal offered his support prior to the match, saying: ‘It is a big difference from the price of the game against Southampton. It shows you that Manchester United is a big team in this world.

Midtjylland officials have defended the price hike, saying it is the biggest occasion in the club's history

'In the Netherlands you also have a big difference in prices but this is a lot. I have very much sympathy for the fans.’

However, Midtjylland manager Jess Thorup defended the increased prices.

He said: ‘How can I say it? This is probably the biggest game in the history of this club.

'I am very satisfied that club decided to play in Herning, although we could have moved to a bigger stadium to get more spectators and earn more money.

‘I have not heard a lot from our fans about the price, and even though everybody pays the same I think it is a fair price. I think I don’t have to go into this but I hope everybody gets value for their money.’

The Danish club resisted the temptation to switch to a larger venue despite UEFA regulations against standing meaning the capacity had to be reduced from 11,800 to 9,500.

Midtjylland board member Claus Steinlein also backed the pricing policy.

'Generally speaking you could say that we could have sold more than 50,000 tickets for this game,' he said. 'So if you look at supply and demand perhaps the price should have been even higher.

'That's the cost of watching a game like this. So I actually believe that we have been very fair and we certainly haven't had any problems selling the tickets.

'Normally we have journalists criticise us for not making enough money and when we put the prices up the same journalists criticise us for making too much.

'We'll have a sold-out stadium and an excellent setting. That's what players, coaches, all of the club and all of our region is looking forward to.

'It's going to be a day to celebrate so let's rather focus our energy on that.'

United to face Liverpool in Europa League

Manchester United have been drawn against historic rivals Liverpool in the Europa League Round of 16, after progressing in the competition with a 6-3 aggregate win over FC Midtjylland.

Friday afternoon’s much-anticipated draw was open with no seeding or country restrictions, which led to the two most successful clubs in English football being paired together in a European competition for the first time. The first leg will be played at Anfield on Thursday 10 March (kick-off 20:05 GMT) with the return fixture at Old Trafford on Thursday 17 March (18:00 GMT).

"It’s a busy schedule coming up again and Liverpool will be a great game to play in, especially as it’s now in the Europa League," Daley Blind, who scored against the Merseysiders at Old Trafford in September, told ManUtd.com. "You’re either in or out, through to the next round or not, so it’s very important for us. They will say it’s important for them too so we have to show that we want it more.

"I’ve definitely got some good memories against Liverpool – I hope we can create some more."

If Louis van Gaal's men can win the Europa League this season, it would secure a place in the Champions League and add United’s name to the list of clubs to have won all three of UEFA’s major competitions, alongside Chelsea, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Juventus. The Reds have already lifted three European Cups (1968, 1999 and 2008) and the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1991).

EUROPA LEAGUE ROUND OF 16
FC Shakhtar Donetsk v RSC Anderlecht
FC Basel 1893 v Sevilla FC
Villarreal CF v Bayer 04 Leverkusen
Athletic Club v Valencia CF
Liverpool v Manchester United
Sparta Prague v Lazio
Borussia Dortmund v Tottenham Hotspur
Fenerbahce v SC Braga

Manchester United vs Liverpool 6pm kick-off time under consideration by UEFA as they evaluate request to reschedule

* Manchester United are due to face Liverpool at Old Trafford on March 17
* The first leg of the Europa League last-16 clash is on March 10 at Anfield
* The first leg will kick off at 8.05pm but the second is due to be at 6pm

Manchester United’s Europa League clash with Liverpool in a fortnight could yet have its kick-off moved.

The two north west giants do battle in the last-16 second leg on March 17, a match scheduled for 6pm.

But United are worried about supporters enduring difficulties reaching Old Trafford so early and requested the kick-off to be put back two hours.

UEFA is evaluating Trafford Council's request to move Manchester United vs Liverpool from its 6pm start

That was a call reaffirmed up by Trafford Council, who penned a letter to UEFA this week detailing their concerns.

It is still expected that Europe’s governing body will stick to the original time but they confirmed on Wednesday that Trafford Council’s safety advisory board’s recommendation of switching times was being reviewed.

That centred on a danger to the safety of fans descending on Old Trafford given the thousands of added vehicles to an area which already struggles in rush-hour traffic.

Louis van Gaal’s United travel to Anfield for the first leg next Thursday - an 8:05pm kick-off.

Winning the competition could represent the pair’s best opportunity to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Paul Scholes brands Manchester United 'a shambles' and says stars 'are falling short' after Europa League defeat at Liverpool

* Manchester United were beaten 2-0 by rivals Liverpool in Europa League
* Club icons Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand were highly critical of their side
* Scholes labelled Louis van Gaal's team 'a shambles' for their low standards

Manchester United were branded a ‘shambles’ by Paul Scholes after being brushed aside by Liverpool in the Europa League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side dominated last night’s last-16 first leg as a penalty from Daniel Sturridge and Roberto Firmino’s tap-in sealed a comfortable win.

Former United midfielder Scholes was damning in his assessment as Louis van Gaal’s team were left with a mountain to climb in next Thursday’s second leg at Old Trafford.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes was less than pleased with what he saw on Thursday night

‘They were a shambles,’ said Scholes after the game on BT Sport. ‘The lack of quality and fight...when you are United, there are certain standards you have to be at, and they haven’t made them. When we were playing we were reaching them. These players are falling well short.

‘The worst thing is these players now apologising on Twitter and Facebook. Just get out there and play! These players that have come in for £300million are no better than the players that have been allowed to leave the club.

‘For 20 years Manchester United had an identity. You were going to play fast football, going to pass the ball forward, tackle, run. The last three years they have gone away from something that worked.

‘You look at the pitch tonight and what are they trying to do? I have absolutely no idea. The first half was shocking, the second half they go to three at the back, which they tried last season and was a disaster, and tonight again it was a disaster.

‘You bring on Michael Carrick to play centre midfield. He (Van Gaal) sticks him in the middle of a back three. Where’s this club going at the minute? They are going the wrong way.’

Another former United hero, Rio Ferdinand, also weighed in with criticism as the away fans were kept behind after the final whistle.

He said: ‘I wouldn’t want to be a player walking past the away fans tonight because they will get abused and rightly so.

‘Liverpool deserve the credit because they should have had three or four. They played like United played back in the day. They were on the front foot from the word go and overran United across the park.

‘I see what’s happening at Anfield. Klopp says ‘‘jump’’ and Liverpool say ‘‘how high?’’. I don’t sense that’s happening at United.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand was left angered by the performance at Anfield Stadium

'I was thinking ‘‘do these players even know they are playing at Anfield? Is it filtering through to those United players?’’

‘I’ve written down a list of players. Di Maria, Nani, Evra, Welbeck, Chicharito, Evans, Fletcher, Rafael, Kagawa ... I could go on. Are they worse than the players out there? They are better than that team there — that’s the problem.’

Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman said: ‘This is the most disjointed Manchester United team I have ever seen. They had players all over the place playing in the wrong positions.

‘The gulf in class tonight was clearly visible. United managed one chance.’

United were chasing a fifth win in a row against Liverpool but did not have a shot on target in the first half. Only a string of saves from David de Gea prevented an even greater defeat.

Yet Van Gaal questioned the decisions to allow Liverpool’s goals — he felt Nathaniel Clyne was fouled outside the area for Sturridge’s penalty and Jordan Henderson was offside in the build up to Firmino’s goal — but accepted United were well beaten.

Still he feels United can come back, saying: ‘You have to believe in everything. You see what Liverpool have done and everything is possible. We have to talk about this game.

‘I give my opinion now. We didn’t cope with the high pressure of Liverpool. We had expected that. It was a surprise that we didn’t cope. They played like that in Premier League.

'That raised the atmosphere in the stadium. They created big chances but we had a very good goalkeeper.

Quote:
GRAHAM POLL'S VERDICT

Referee Carlos Velasco Carballo was absolutely correct to award Liverpool a penalty.

While the initial contact on Nathaniel Clyne from Memphis Depay was outside the area, the following contact was either on the line or just inside the box depending on the viewing angle.

Not that it mattered, as the line constitutes part of the area. Depay was rightly cautioned for the foul too.

Carballo lived up to his disciplinarian reputation by dishing out the cards and cautioned Jordan Henderson inside the first five minutes. But there's nothing wrong with that...
'We had a cheap penalty and in the second half we changed the shape. We had much more contribution to the game but we didn’t create enough.

‘They scored another cheap goal — he was offside — and that is difficult. We have to create an atmosphere like that next week.’

Van Gaal was angered when a journalist raised Ferdinand’s post-match criticisms in the press conference.

Dua laga terakhir keliatan banget loyonya.
