U18s: Newcastle 1 United 7

James Wilson

Paul McGuinness' Under-18s ran riot in a stunning victory at Newcastle in which James Wilson bagged an incredible five-goal haul, aided and abetted by a dominant display from those behind him.

After Wilson had put the Reds four goals up inside 35 minutes, Jack Rudge smashed home a scorching free-kick to take United into the interval boasting a five-goal lead.

Though Newcastle opened the second period with a goal from Esteban Cardona-Lopez, the Reds saw out victory in total comfort, as Wilson added his fifth goal and substitute Kenji Gorre hit United's seventh of the afternoon.

From the off, the visitors dominated matters on sun-soaked Tyneside. With Mats Daehli and Andreas Pereira pulling the attacking strings and seemingly omnipresent, it was little surprise when Wilson latched onto Rudge's through-ball and drilled home a near-post finish.

The opening goal briefly sparked the hosts into life, and United goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini had to be alert to field a shot which deflected off Patrick McNair, before making a superb finger-tip save from Jonathyn Quinn's header.

Within long, the contest was finished by a burst of three goals in five minutes, and all were bagged by Wilson. The striker twice benefited from Daehli's industry by finishing off the Norwegian's approach play, then rounded home goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and slotted home after James Weir's forward surge.

Daehli then curled a shot narrowly wide of Woodman's goal as the hosts remained unable to cope with United, and Rudge capped a magnificent first half by crashing home a scorching 25-yard free-kick.

Cardona-Lopez planted a back-post header past Gollini in the fourth minute of the second half, before Quinn forced a superb full-length save from the Italian stopper, but any faint hopes of a dramatic comeback were curtailed just after the hour.

Pereira fed Wilson, whose neat touch away from a defender took him through on goal and allowed him to drill another low finish inside Woodman's near post.

The Magpies goalkeeper then turned away a low Pereira shot but was once again left exposed by his defence in the 73rd minute as Pereira fed substitute Gorre to sidefoot home a finish high into the net.

Pereira's shot was saved and Daehli flashed a shot just wide as the game meandered to its foregone conclusion. Both deserved goals for their outings, but their approach play - and the impressive work of the entire team - instead provided the platform for a five-star display of finishing from 16-year-old Wilson.

United: Gollini; Evans, McNair (Wilkinson 74), Grimshaw, Rowley (Harrop 46); Rudge, Pearson (Gorre 63), Weir, Daehli; Periera, Wilson. Subs not used: O'Hara, Byrne.
