FAYC: United 3 Burnley 4

United were bundled out of the FA Youth Cup 4-3 by Burnley after extra-time with Jason Gilchrist completing his hat-trick on 112 minutes to cause a major shock.

3,146 fans were at Old Trafford to see the third round encounter with James Weir, Nicholas Ioannou and Donald Love scoring in normal time but Cameron Howieson's first-half header and a brace by Jason Gilchrist forced the additional 30 minutes.

Paul McGuinness' side took time to get into their stride on the big pitch despite some intricate passing and Adnan Januzaj showing off some clever flicks. The Clarets certainly did not look overawed by the big occasion and Pierluigi Gollini had to be alert to save at the feet of Gilchrist.

The visiting fans were unhappy when play continued with Nathan Lowe lying injured after miskicking a pass but Donald Love's shot was blocked as the Reds pressed on. A promising one-two between Januzaj and Jack Barmby led to James Wilson floating a curler into Callum Jakovlevs' arms and Barmby headed a Love centre onto the top of the net but the deadlock was soon broken at the other end.

Love conceded a free-kick on the left that was played into the near post by fit-again Lowe for captain Howieson to bury a close-range header. The goal was certainly not in the script and the Reds took time to regain their composure with plenty of passes being overhit and going awry.

Willowy midfielder Januzaj continued to provide a creative spark but an electrifying run only brought a corner and it was his smart backheel that led to the equaliser in first-half stoppage time. Weir fed Mats Daehli and continued his run as the ball was moved on to Januzaj to pick out the marauding midfielder and Weir supplied a tidy finish past Jakovlevs.

The leveller gave the hosts a boost after the interval and, after Wilson fired a rash shot off target, Ioannou found the net with an instinctive prod after Ben Pearson's effort was cleared off the line. Yet Burnley remained a threat and Cameron Dummigan fired into the side-netting before Gilchrist was first to the rebound after Gollini pushed the ball into the air to make it 2-2.

Once again, the Reds responded in the right manner with Daehli teeing up Love for a full-blooded drive that found its way past Jakovlevs to regain the lead. Any hopes that would be sufficient to clinch a place in the next round proved unfounded as Declan Dalley, who had replaced the injured Ioannou moments earlier, put Gollini under pressure with a back-pass and Gilchrist won the tackle with the keeper to slip his second of the night into an unguarded net.

Daehli tried to inspire a late winner but scooped over the top before flashing a dangerous ball across the face of goal. Wilson had the final attempt of normal time but his powerful angled drive was well held by Jakovlevs.

The Reds continued to dominate in the first period of extra-time but Pearson's shot was beaten away by Jakovlevs with the midfielder pulling up with cramp afterwards. Howieson gave Gollini an uncomfortable moment from long range but most of the chances were created at the other end with substitute Jack Rudge upset not to win a penalty and Wilson heading inches wide following a Januzaj centre.*

Daehli was denied what looked a stone-wall spot kick after a mazy dribble but both teams looked leg-weary as the tie wore on. Out of nothing, Burnley conjured up a fourth goal with substitute Bradley Jackson getting away down the right to deliver a measured cross for Gilchrist to nod in for his hat-trick with eight minutes remaining.*

Jakovlevs pulled off a remarkable double save to deny Wilson and Januzaj and then tipped a Liam Grimshaw shot around the post with his fingertips. Daehli bent a shot wide so there was no way back and last year's semi-finalists bow out at the first hurdle despite giving their all.

United: Gollini; Love, Grimshaw, Ioannou (Dalley 59), Rowley; Barmby (Rudge 55), Pearson (Byrne 114), Weir, Januzaj, Daehli; Wilson. Subs not used: Sutherland, Gorre.

U18s: United 7 Bury 0

United's Under-18s*came on strong late in the game to knock seven goals past Bury's youngsters in a friendly at Carrington.

Paul McGuinness arranged the fixture to give a run-out to those who would have been disappointed to miss out on Friday's FA Youth Cup tie against Burnley, which saw the Reds suffer a 4-3 defeat.

Sam Byrne and Declan Dalley started after coming off the bench at Old Trafford in the cup exit while unused substitute Kenji Gorre was also included, clearly itching to get involved as his performance illustrated.

After a goalless first half, Gorre scored four times, one from the penalty spot,*to take centre stage*although it was*Josh Harrop who made the breakthrough soon after the restart.

Substitutes Demetri Mitchell and Joe Riley also got on the scoresheet following a raft of changes*as the goals flowed the longer the game wore on.*

Manchester United exited the NexLions Cup at the semi final stage, losing 4-1 to an impressive Sporting Lisbon side at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.

The Reds produced a spirited performance and even took a 28th minute lead though James Wilson, though Paul McGuinness’ men were ultimately outclassed after the break when goals from Carlos Mane, Edelino Ie (two)*and Christian Ponde sealed progress for the Portuguese Under-19s.

In spite of defeat, there were several positives, most notably the first half performances of Mats Daehli, Jack Barmby and goal scorer Wilson, who was unfortunate not to add to his tally after the break when his penalty was brilliantly saved by the goalkeeper.*

United will now contest a third-placed playoff against either Liverpool or Singapore Youth on Sunday at 08:30 GMT, to be shown exclusively live on MUTV. To subscribe, call 08708 48 68 88 or go to ManUtd.com/joinmutv.

Friday’s matchday squad was as follows: Sutherland, Love, Grimshaw, Ioannou, Evans, Weir, Rudge, Pearson, Barmby, Daehli, Wilson. Subs: Rowley, Byrne, Rothwell, Gollini, Dalley, McNair, Gorre.

Manchester United's Under-19s bounced back from Friday's NexLions Cup semi-final defeat to Sporting Lisbon to claim third place in the tournament with victory over hosts Singapore Youth Selection on Sunday.

Brian McClair's youngsters started the game immediately on the front foot, with James Weir hitting the post after just 45 seconds following a neat one-two with Sam Byrne.

Byrne himself had a great opportunity to open the scoring just three minutes later as he fired a shot straight at Singapore keeper Rudy Khairullah after good work by Jack Barmby.

A competitive, but ultimately goalless, first half ensued with Singapore captain Raihan Rahman stinging the palms of Pierluigi Gollini from distance, while Barmby's free-kick forced a decent save from Rudy.

Singapore's best opportunity came right on the stroke of half time, as Declan Dalley did extremely well to block Shahfiq Ghani's shot after the 20-year-old forward had been slipped through by Syafiq Zainal.

United suffered a nightmare start to the second half, however, as Dalley’s challenge felled Sahil Suhaimi, who dusted himself down before coolly sending Gollini the wrong way from the penalty spot on 52 minutes.

The Reds responded well and again Jack Barmby was involved - his curling shot floated just over the crossbar as United pressed forward for an equaliser.

It eventually came as Barmby and Mats Daehli combined from a quick corner, and James Weir was on hand to flick the Norwegian's low cross home from inside the six-yard box despite the best efforts of Shakir Hamzah on the goalline.

It was no more than the Reds deserved and United took the lead just four minutes later. In a role reversal, Weir turned provider to skip past the challenges of Singapore’s defence to play in Daehli on the left and he curled his effort into the far corner, although Rudy got a hand to the ball.

The hosts pressed for an equaliser but it was United who looked more likely to score again as substitute James Wilson and Barmby were denied in quick succession by Rudy. The Reds survived a stoppage time scare after Iqbal Hussain was bundled over by Patrick McNair just outside the penalty area, but Safirul Sulaiman fired his free-kick high over the bar.

United had done enough to claim a deserved victory and with it third place in the NexLions Cup.

United: Gollini; Love, Dalley, Grimshaw, Rowley (Evans 61), Pearson (McNair 84), Weir, Rothwell (Daehli 34), Barmby, Gorre (Rudge 61), Byrne (Wilson 61).

Subs not used: Sutherland (GK), Ioannou

Young Reds play in Germany

United finished their Group A campaign in the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup with only a point to show for their efforts in the six-a-side tournament.

The Reds' youngsters were up against it, particularly against two German-based teams who seemed well versed in this format of the game.

However, Ben Pearson's goal, following a neat turn by Jack Barmby, ensured*Paul McGuinness' team*led at the break in the opening game against Schalke. The Bundesliga outfit hit back to win 2-1 despite a superb performance by keeper Jonny Sutherland.

United, captained by Tom Lawrence, came from behind themselves to force a 1-1 draw against FC Copenhagen. Barmby's teasing cross was met by a diving header from James Weir to secure a point against the Danes.

The final fixture ended in a 4-0 reverse against Stuttgart, the club from close to where the tournament is being held, despite the best efforts of the likes of Mats Daehli, Pearson and James Wilson with the team being regularly rotated during the action.

United's Academy side enjoyed a 3-0 victory against Tranmere Rovers in a friendly at Carrington on Saturday.

Strikers Ashley Fletcher and Sam Byrne got on the scoresheet and an own goal added to the scoreline when a Demetre Mitchell effort found its way into the net.

The Reds were without a number of regulars at this level due to the participation in the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup in Germany, allowing a run-out for the likes of Kieran O'Hara, Josh Harrop and Mitchell.

Meanwhile, the six-a-side tournament ended on a positive note for United, with the youngsters clearly getting to grips with the indoor game.

Ben Pearson and James Weir netted in a 2-1 victory against Borussia Dortmund before defeat to Mainz by the same scoreline with Pearson again finding the net.

A 7-2 thumping of Lazio in the final fixture featured a first-half hat-trick from the outstanding Pearson. Mats Daehli bagged a brace while Jack Barmby and James Wilson also got in on the act.

United starting line-up (v Tranmere): O'Hara; Wilkinson, Ioannou, McNair, Wilkinson; Rudge, Harrop, Rothwell, Mitchell; Byrne, Fletcher.

United's youngsters*triumphed in*the opening game of the Elite phase of the Barclays Under-18 Premier League with James Wilson grabbing an injury-time winner.

Zach Clough scored twice for Bolton, the second with three minutes left, with Jack Barmby and James Weir on the scoresheet for the Reds before Wilson popped up with a dramatic strike.

The hosts made the brighter start in freezing conditions but Weir came close to an opening goal. The England Under-19 midfielder played a one-two with Wilson and stormed through, only roll his finish agonisingly wide of the far post.

Instead, Wanderers drew first blood on 16 minutes when Nicholas Ioannou was dispossessed and a fast breakaway raid allowed Clough and Tom Youngs to show off their understanding in attack. Youngs returned the ball to his strike partner, rather than shoot himself, with a glorious pass and Clough finished neatly past Jonny Sutherland.

The Reds battled back, with Wilson going close,*and deservedly drew level courtesy of a cracker from Barmby. A quickly-taken free-kick, after Ben Pearson was fouled, led to Barmby blasting a dipping drive into the net from outside the box.

Mats Daehli became a growing influence on proceedings in midfield and Weir almost converted one dangerous cross at the start of the second half but there were not too many clear-cut openings until a manic minute with action at both ends. Daehli was denied a penalty shout after tumbling inside the area and Bolton broke with Youngs having his strike ruled out for a push on Donald Love, only given by referee's assistant and not the man in the middle.

After Wilson fired over the top, United went in front courtesy of a superb team goal with Daehli picking out the overlapping Louis Rowley and his deep cross was rammed home on the volley by the energetic Weir. In the closing stages, Bolton hit back when Clough executed a perfect free-kick past Sutherland's despairing dive to level matters.

However, there was still time for more drama as Paul McGuinness' side showed the character that United are famed for. Barmby juggled a Donald Love cross before helping the ball on to Wilson, who kept his composure to drill in his 13th goal of the season.

United: Sutherland; Love, Ioannou, Grimshaw, Rowley; Weir, Rudge, Pearson, Daehli; Barmby, Wilson. Subs not used: Byrne, O'Hara, Rothwell, Gorre, Evans.
