Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Chelsea's kids are BETTER than Manchester United's because of their experiences out on loan... as young guns prepare to meet in the last 16 of the Carabao Cup

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Chelsea's kids are ahead of Manchester United's
* The Norwegian believes Chelsea's loan system has helped them this season
* Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have both had a lot of first-team game time
* Solskjaer accepts that his young players are still finding their feet at senior level

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits that Chelsea's youngsters are ahead of Manchester United's as they prepare to meet in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Solskjaer and Frank Lampard have both focused on youth this season – the United boss because he has chosen to recruit more heavily from the club's academy, and Lampard because of Chelsea's transfer ban.

While the Londoners can turn to the likes of Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount who have extensive first-team experience out on loan in recent seasons, Solskjaer accepts that his kids are still finding their feet at senior level.

'Chelsea are a very exciting team,' he said. 'Frank has got players that have been on loan for one or two seasons in the Championship. The difference between my youngsters is that they are almost stepping right now onto the scene.

'Axel Tuanzebe has missed the last couple of games, but he has been out on loan (at Aston Villa last season) and you can see the benefit. I think Chelsea's young players benefit from that now. They are a mature young team.'

Solskjaer admits that it has been a big challenge for young players like Mason Greenwood, Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes, James Garner and Brandon Williams to step into the first-team as United have struggled at the start of the season, but he believes they will benefit from the experience.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits that Chelsea's youngsters are ahead of Manchester United's. Solskjaer and Frank Lampard have both had to call on youth players for different reasons. Solskjaer admits that it has been a big challenge for his young players like Mason Greenwood

'Character will be revealed in tough times, but I think the young kids have been excellent,' added the United boss. 'I can't give them any more responsibility and I couldn't be any more happy with many of the youngsters.

'We know it's been tough, and we know that we have asked a lot of them because Paul (Pogba), Luke (Shaw), Anthony (Martial) and loads of other players have been injured. The youngsters have stepped up in a difficult period. But in the end they will be stronger for it.'

Asked if Garner and Williams will face Chelsea after starting against Partizan Belgrade in Serbia last week, Solskjaer said: 'I would think so. Jimmy played 10-15 minutes (against Norwich) and was excellent. He calmed us down and made some good decisions when we wanted to see the game out. We have not made a decision on who is going to play, but you will probably see the two of them.'

United beat Chelsea 4-0 at Old Trafford on the opening day, but Solskjaer admits that it was not a true reflection of the contest and expects another difficult game against Lampard's side who are on a run of seven straight wins.

He said: 'I think Frank has done a good job because the performance against us was good. The result was bad. We held our hands up then as well and said 4-0 was flattering.

'We got pegged back and they pressed us but we scored two goals within a minute, the second and third, which decided the game for us. But we didn't think we were 4-0 better than them. It is going to be an interesting game. We don't make it easy for ourselves in the cups with the draws.'

'That's Manchester United': Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists his side are heading in the right direction after knocking Chelsea out of Carabao Cup

* Manchester United took a spot in the Carabao Cup last eight by beating Chelsea
* The victory at Stamford Bridge was Manchester United’s third on the bounce
* Striker Marcus Rashford scored the goal of the game with a swerving free-kick
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was incredibly positive about the outcome post-match

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup win over Chelsea proves Manchester United are finally heading in the right direction.

The victory at Stamford Bridge was United’s third on the bounce - the first time they’ve achieved the feat this season.

And Solsjkaer said: ‘We've travelled a lot in the last week. We've got a good team spirit and camaraderie. It shows the character of the team.

‘Today we were excellent, with fast flowing football. That's Manchester United. We're trying to get back to that.

‘We know we're not the finished product, we're a work in progress and keep trying to improve.'

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford revealed the secret of his wonder free-kick that booked United’s quarter-final place — the lighter League Cup footballs.

Premier League games are played with Nike balls, but Carabao Cup games use Mitre footballs.

‘To be honest, it was the balls,’ Rashford admitted.

'When we were training with them and we were shooting there was this up and down motion and they can go anywhere.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was positive about Manchester United's win against Chelsea

‘Thankfully, today it went in the top corner.’

Having missed his second penalty of the season against Norwich at the weekend, Rashford stepped up to put United ahead from the spot in the first-half.

‘You always step forward to take it and when the moment comes it is just about trying to be relaxed,’ the England star added.

‘Thankfully, today I was. It made the game a little bit easier for us but the second goal was the one that killed the game.

Rashford added: ‘We have been in a tough place. We are still getting through that phase and the only way to do it is to fight your way through it.

‘The main focus for us is just improvement and development because we are definitely going places. We have done a lot of good work.

‘The start of the season wasn’t exactly what we expected but we have got to get through it and get back to winning games.’
