VALENCIA INSPIRED BY ECUADORIAN OLYMPIAN

Manchester United star Antonio Valencia has revealed which fellow Ecuadorian has inspired him the most throughout his career.

The Ecuador captain is one of only three players from his country currently playing in the Premier League – along with Swansea's Jefferson Montero and Everton's Enner Valencia – and is set to receive his 90th cap in Thursday's World Cup qualifier against Brazil.

Valencia, whose consistent displays last season earned him the Players' Player of the Year award and helped the Reds win three trophies, is among the most decorated Ecuadorian footballers of all-time but he named some other famous sporting stars who have represented his nation.

"Jefferson Perez gave us our first Olympic gold medal. [Alex] Aguinaga, represented our country for 20 years in Mexico; Agustin Delgado played here in Premier League, Ulises de la Cruz who also played in Premier League. These are the big names for us, who marked a special era in Ecuadorian sport."

When asked who, outside of his family, has inspired him the most, Valencia replied: "Jefferson Perez – he fought hard to win a medal that was so important for Ecuador. With limited resources, he trained hard and was able to achieve a medal for our country."

WHO IS JEFFERSON PEREZ?

A retired Olympian, Perez is regarded as one of the most important South American athletes in history and the biggest sportsman in Ecuador, having won the only two medals the country has ever achieved in the Olympic Games.

The 43-year-old specialised in the 20km walk event and won gold at his first Olympics in Atlanta, United States, in 1996 – becoming the youngest athlete to do so in the 20km event.

After failing to win any medals in 2000 and 2004, he claimed silver in the same competition in his final Olympics in Beijing in 2008 at the age of 34 before announcing his retirement from the sport.

PRIDE OF HIS COUNTRY

Like Perez, Valencia is immensely proud to be an Ecuadorian and the experienced full-back, who made his international debut in 2004, enjoys every occasion he wears his nation's colours.

"[I'm] very proud to represent my country here in England, in the Premier League. I hope to carry the flag with pride in Premier League matches," he said. "It is an absolute honour to pull on the Ecuadorian shirt.

"Thankfully, I have represented my country in several matches – two World Cups, three Copa Americas – and I wear it every time as if it were the first time. I get really excited and wear it with pride."

FUTURE PLANS

Valencia, who joined United from Wigan in 2009, has been playing outside of his country since leaving El Nacional in 2005 and the 31-year-old says he plans to return to his homeland in the future.

When asked if he will go back to Ecuador once he's hung up his boots, he said: "Of course. My brothers, my family, and my friends are there. I hope to play a few more seasons and then go back to my country."

WHICH VALENCIA THUNDERBOLT WAS BETTER?

Manchester United full-back Antonio Valencia blasted home the opener in the 4-0 thrashing of Everton, with the Ecuadorian's strike reminiscent of his goal against Blackburn Rovers in 2012.

We decided to compare the two sensational efforts and asked fans on Twitter which one they preferred. Our video displays the goals side by side.

Valencia v Everton, United 4-0 Everton, Old Trafford, 17.09.2017
The skipper got the Reds off to the best possible start against Everton as he thundered Nemanja Matic’s crossfield ball past Jordan Pickford.

The goal, Valencia’s first of the season, came after just four minutes, and it proved to be the difference between the sides for much of the game.

However, United’s pressure finally told in the final 10 minutes as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial all netted to secure a 4-0 win for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Valencia v Blackburn Rovers, Blackburn 0-2 United, Ewood Park, 02.04.2012.
After receiving a pass from Rafael on the right flank, Valencia proceeded to jink outside his marker and fire an unstoppable shot across Paul Robinson into the far corner of the net.

The Ecuador international’s goal came in the 81st-minute, and broke the deadlock, on what had previously been a frustrating evening in Lancashire for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. It was later voted our Goal of the Season.

Ashley Young went on to net United’s second of the game, five minutes after Valencia’s howitzer, which ultimately handed the Reds all three points.

87% of fans on Twitter voted Sunday's strike as the best.

Chris Abraham (@Chris_Abes): Has to be the one he scored today. Absolute worldie by the best in the business.

TacticalJB (@RashfordSkrr): Have to vote for the Blackburn goal - the angle was just insane.

Dino Kordic (@DinoKordic): Blackburn - one of the most important goals I saw!

Mohammad (@MUFCHardFan): Tough poll. Both are fantastic, but the one vs. Blackburn was in crucial moments of the season.

Chris Flores (@Chrisader18): Blackburn without a doubt. So much skill needed to score from there and the celebration!

Sean (@Seanyboy0170): It's close but today's!

VALENCIA ENJOYING FREEDOM IN HIS ROLE

Antonio Valencia says he is playing with great freedom under Jose Mourinho and is itching to get back into Premier League action in Saturday's teatime kick-off with Newcastle United.

The Manchester United players have had to wait a couple of weeks to get the Chelsea defeat out of the system, but the right-back says he is feeling refreshed and is keen to be rampaging up and down the flank again.

"It was very important for me to have a week off so I could renew my energy levels and to switch off a little from the football, you could say, of having played a lot of games," he told United Review, the official matchday programme. "And then you come back keener and even more excited at the prospect of the league getting under way again.

"It’s been a welcome change not having to travel away this time with the national team. We’re talking about really long trips of around 16 hours, which can be pretty tiring but, this time, I had the chance to not travel and instead get some rest along with my family."

Mourinho has often spoken in glowing terms about Valencia, who has been wearing the captain's armband of late, and it is fair to say the defender has a strong relationship with the boss.

"Yes, the season he arrived here, he showed a lot of faith in me from the start," added the Ecuador international. "You could even say that he gave me the freedom to play and enjoy my football, and to have an open line of communication with him. It’s been like that for the year and a half that we’ve been working together. I’d like to thank him for all his kind words during that period.

"I think his impact here has been a very positive one. We won three trophies last season and, this campaign, we are playing very well. We, the players, are enjoying ourselves and the fans are happy. But we’ve got to keep going like this, the mindset now must be to cement our position at the upper end of the table and to enjoy every training session and every team-talk we have with him."

ANTONIO VALENCIA: JUST KEEP WINNING

Antonio Valencia says all Manchester United can keep doing over the festive period is winning games, as the Reds look to stay on the coat-tails of Premier League leaders City.

The Reds bounced back from Sunday’s derby defeat with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, but the Blues remain in command following their 4-0 win at Swansea City.

Games are coming thick and fast over the coming couple of weeks and Valencia insists the Christmas calendar always represents a great opportunity to pick up plenty of points, while hoping others drop some.

“The important thing we have to do now is win,” he told MUTV. “We can’t really afford to lose or even draw, it’s about focusing ourselves and our objectives on winning as many games as we can and hoping that anyone above us slips up now and again.

“When it’s a packed fixture calendar like we have currently, it’s really important to follow step by step what the physios and medical team give us in terms of advice,” he added. “It might be about how we recuperate, what we eat… anything that can help aid the recovery period between games because we have one every few days. It’s always really important to take their advice but especially when it’s a very packed schedule like it is now.”

Matches will follow for the Reds in the Premier League, Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup, with the Champions League on the back burner until February. United will face Sevilla in the last 16 when the competition resumes and, while Jose Mourinho’s men avoided the likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus in the draw, Valencia admits Sevilla will still prove tough opponents.

“When you get to this stage of the competition, teams who are still in it are there for a reason so we know Sevilla will be a real challenge. Whenever we’ve played against Spanish opposition in the past, they have always been set up very well and they’re very strong tactically,” he explained. “We go to their place first and we know we’ll have to perform just how Manchester United can perform and, if we get a good result over there, hopefully we can bring them back to Old Trafford and do the business and qualify.

“There are no easy games in the last 16 and I’ve said before that, whichever team plays against Manchester United, is always motivated and it’s the same in Europe. They give that extra little bit of themselves to perform even better than they would normally. We know it will be quite difficult going there and they’ll want to give a good account of themselves in front of their own supporters.

“It’s quite a way off but let’s hope, when we get to that game, we’re in good form and we can make sure we go and get a good result. I think both legs will be quite entertaining affairs.”

BOSS GIVES UPDATE ON VALENCIA INJURY

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Antonio Valencia suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of Manchester United's victory over West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

The full-back was withdrawn in the 66th minute and replaced by Marcos Rojo after sustaining the problem as the Reds went on to win 2-1 at The Hawthorns courtesy of first-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard.

It was the seventh successive game that Valencia, who has been wearing the captain’s armband in Michael Carrick’s absence, has started and the boss feels his injury is the result of him playing in a number of matches in a short period of time.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the boss said: “This is what I call a December injury. It is an injury of accumulation of fatigue. It is a muscular one. Hamstring. Big, small, medium, I don't know.”

When asked how long the no.25 might be out for, he added: “Let's wait. I think he is an experienced guy to not let it go to difficult limits. But it is an injury of fatigue. Everyone in the Premier League especially the ones in more accumulation of cups, European cups, they are at risk.”

Valencia has now made 24 appearances for United in all competitions this season, scoring twice – in our 4-0 home win over Everton in September and 3-1 victory away at Arsenal at the start of this month.

It follows news that another defensive option in centre-back Eric Bailly will undergo surgery on his injured ankle which could sideline the Ivorian for up to three months.

The Reds face Championship side Bristol City at Ashton Gate in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night before returning to Premier League action away at Leicester City next Saturday, 23 December, as United embark on a busy run of fixtures over the festive period.

VALENCIA WINS GOAL OF THE YEAR

Antonio Valencia's rocket against Everton in September has been voted Manchester United's Goal of the Year for 2017 by supporters on Twitter.

It's been another year of memorable goals for the Reds but the Ecuadorian's exquisite effort was undoubtedly worthy of winning the award, as his emphatic half-volley from 20 yards flew into the top corner and set the Reds on the way to a convincing 4-0 win over the Toffees at Old Trafford.

In a poll conducted on our official Twitter account @ManUtd, the right-back's thunderbolt claimed over half of the overall vote (56 per cent). Jesse Lingard's screamer against Middlesbrough in March and superb solo goal against Watford in November also made our shortlist, as did Paul Pogba's fine clipped finish against Swansea City back in August.

Valencia's goal not only picked up our Goal of the Month award but also scooped the Carling Goal of the Month for the best Premier League strike in September.

Speaking after the victory over Everton, he said: "It's a goal that I am proud of. I just hit it into the back of the net and then heard the crowd erupt at Old Trafford. It was a great feeling and it gave us the start we needed against Everton, we came away with three points which ended the day perfectly."

It was the first of two goals our no.25, who has regularly worn the captain's armband in Michael Carrick's absence this term, has struck this season as he also opened the scoring in the Reds' impressive 3-1 win at Arsenal at the start of December.

Congratulations Antonio and thanks to everyone who voted.

VALENCIA: WE NEED TO KEEP FIGHTING

Antonio Valencia insists Manchester United will keep fighting in the Premier League, regardless of the club’s position in the table.

The Reds have occupied second place for much of the season but are currently 13 points behind Manchester City – a gap which could be widened before Jose Mourinho’s men face Newcastle United on Sunday, as the leaders host Leicester City in Saturday’s evening kick-off.

Ahead of this weekend’s trip to St James’ Park, Valencia insists the Reds must retain hope – making reference to the 2011/12 season, when United were pipped to the title by our cross-city rivals after letting an eight-point lead slip in the final six matches of the campaign - as an example of how quickly the situation can change.

“We need to keep fighting until the end – we need to keep going,” our no.25 stated, after the Reds beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 last Saturday. “A few years ago, we lost a title when we were eight points ahead and there were only a few games left. Now, we have a lot more games to play and we need to keep fighting.”

The Reds bounced back from the defeat at Tottenham with a deserved victory against Huddersfield at Old Trafford last weekend and Valencia feels the team showed key attributes which proved our capabilities to maintain the challenge for the remainder of the campaign.

“The important thing is always to get the three points – playing at home, playing well, and we will carry on with this mentality until the end of the season. We have showed that we have the quality and conditions to fight until the end of the season.”

The right-back has stepped up to be a capable stand-in skipper this season in the absence of captain Michael Carrick but Valencia has been focused on his own performances on the pitch to ensure he helps the team.

“I want to represent the team and I think I am doing it well, but the most important thing is that my team-mates are happy with me,” he said modestly.

Valencia is enjoying another impressive season so far and has added more goals to his game, having struck three times already this term – more than the previous three seasons combined.

VALENCIA'S FIRE STILL BURNING BRIGHT

As he prepares to make his 325th Manchester United appearance, Antonio Valencia says his desire to bring success to the club is as strong as ever, and the full-back stresses he feels in peak shape.

The Ecuadorian, who has regularly worn the captain's armband in the last couple of seasons, has been one of the Reds’ most consistent performers this term, just as he has been for much of his nine years at Old Trafford.

Valencia is preparing to take part in his 20th Manchester derby this weekend and the 32-year-old insists he has plenty more to give and achieve with the club.

“I’m very proud to wear the United shirt and represent this great club,” he told MUTV. “At my age as well, I’m feeling great and looking forward. I want to play every game, I want to win more, I want to fight for this club. I’m feeling good, my physical shape is great so why can’t we achieve more together?

“It’s a great honour and a source of great pride for me to be wearing the captain’s armband for a club like Manchester United. I’m very proud of it and I hope I’m doing a good job.

“Confidence is very high,” he added, when looking ahead to Saturday's trip across town. “We’ve played some good matches and had some good results in the last four [league] games.

“Thanks to God, I’ve had the opportunity to play in several derbies now and I think the important thing is that you go into it in a calm frame of mind after so much preparation, and hopefully we come out of it happy and with the fans pleased with our performance.”

VALENCIA: POSITIVES WILL PUSH US ON

Antonio Valencia says there has been "a great vibe" around the Manchester United dressing room in the wake of last weekend's derby comeback and the full-back insists it's another positive on which to build for next season.

After overcoming leaders City last weekend, the Reds will face bottom-placed West Bromwich Albion on Sunday at Old Trafford, with Jose Mourinho's men looking to finish the season as strongly as possible.

Valencia reflected on the derby win during a sit-down interview with United Review, the official matchday programme, and talked about the confidence it, and other excellent victories over Liverpool and Chelsea recently, have given the squad.

"After the game on Saturday, of course it was a fantastic feeling and, two days later when you come back into training, it still felt brilliant and that great vibe stays with you," he explained. "You carry it with you into the next training sessions which is what we’ve done.

"I think we’ve done really well in key games. Those good results and performances only serve to motivate us even more for the rest of this season and especially for next season as well.

"It's like a message that we’re sending to ourselves and it has extra motivation for us. It reinforces the fact we have a great squad, a great team and a strong dressing room, ahead of the next season, which will hopefully be a great one for us."

Mourinho pointed out recently that his side have made very positive steps forward this term with more points recorded, more goals scored and fewer conceded. And Valencia feels the team have made important progress which the Reds will aim to build on further in 2018/19.

"I think it’s positive thoughts throughout when you look back on things," he declared. "We’ve scored more goals, picked up more points, conceded fewer and I think we’ve played better. You want to take that forward into next season and try to put things right that maybe haven’t gone so well this season and improve upon results in games.

"We want to win even more games and not slip up in the type of the matches where we might have slipped up this season. All that considered, it’s looking good for next season and let’s hope we can be fighting for every trophy that’s available to us."
