Seandainya Cole tidak sakit, mungkin dirinya bakal turut bermain...

COLE HAS COACHING ROLE FOR UNITED LEGENDS

Andy Cole has been named as the Manchester United Legends' assistant manager for the Old Trafford charity match against Barcelona on Saturday 2 September.

The former Reds striker, who recently underwent a kidney transplant operation, will be in the dug-out for the home leg of this year's double-header against the Catalan giants.

Cole scored in a 3-3 draw against Barcelona at the Nou Camp during United's successful 1998/99 Champions League campaign and although medical advice will unfortunately prevent him from returning to the iconic ground, he'll be on duty when the Catalan club's former players come over to Manchester.

"Andy definitely will be assisting me in the home game," manager Bryan Robson confirmed to ManUtd.com. "Unfortunately, with the problems that Andy has had, the doctors have advised him not to be flying at this moment in time.

"This means he can't attend the away game but Andy will be involved for the home match."

'Legends are Back 2017' follows the success of the 2013 and 2015 charity clashes against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively, which jointly raised over £1.8million for Manchester United Foundation.

The Reds veterans will be travelling to the Nou Camp for the first leg on 30 June, before hosting the return match in Manchester on 2 September. Both games will be screened live on MUTV.

Manchester United legend Andrew Cole reveals nephew Alexander was his kidney donor following transplant as he lifts lid on his battle

* Andrew Cole underwent the kidney transplant in Manchester in April
* The former England striker previously suffered kidney failure in June 2014
* The 45-year-old has lifted the lid on his battle with kidney failure

Andy Cole has lifted the lid on his battle with kidney failure – and revealed his nephew was his donor.

The Manchester United legend had a transplant in April after suffering from a condition which causes scarring of the kidneys.

Cole first fell ill in June 2015, after picking up an airborne virus.

The Manchester United legend is slowly returning to full strength following the operation

'How I actually picked it up on whatever continent I was in, who will know,' he explained.

'It took a bit of time to register because being the person I am — (like) men in general — if you fall ill the worst thing you want to do is go to the doctors. I tried to man up for a bit too long.'

Cole enlisted the help of United's former club doctor and a specialist at Manchester Royal Infirmary. 'It was a real shock when he said get yourself in,' the Treble winner added, 'I thought nothing of it. So when the guy who became my specialist said I wouldn't be going home I thought that it can't be that bad, but it was.'

Cole, now 45, added that if it was not for his wife Shirley he would not be here now.

'First, I just thought I was dehydrated,' he said. 'I thought 'Drink loads of water and then you'll be good to go'. Then I started retain a lot of water and that wasn't like me because I never gained weight. I was blowing up. That was the only reason I called the doctor.

Andrew Cole had a transplant after a condition which causes scarring of the kidneys. Cole will assist manager Bryan Robson when United legends take on Barcelona counterparts

'My wife got on my case as well. To be fair, it's a good job she did, otherwise I would not have bothered. But I'm here to tell the tale.'

Cole, who will assist manager Bryan Robson when a team of United legends take on their Barcelona counterparts in a two-legged fixture to raise funds for the club's Foundation, eventually had another member of his family to thank too.

'The donor is my nephew, Alexander,' said Cole whose condition was diagnosed as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis. 'He's 28 and it's a noble job.'

Cole, who won 15 England caps, is now looking forward to the future. 'It's been two months (since the transplant),' he said. 'After three more you can find out a lot more about kidney capacity and where you're going to be.'

The first leg is at the Nou Camp on June 30 and Cole added: 'My perspective has changed on a hell of a lot of things. I'm looking forward to this. In my mind, I feel I've been given another opportunity so if you want to do coaching, this the best time.'

Club ambassador Cole, a prolific striker who won five Premier League titles with United for whom he played from 1995 to 2001, is ready for the battle.

'I'll get there, it will take time and perseverance. At times it is tough, I think the toughest thing for me is that I can't be as stubborn as I used to be because no matter what I do now I can't get there any quicker.'

He also reserved praise for the doctors and nurses who looked after him.

'It has gone really well,' he said. 'The medical team have been absolutely fantastic, the National Health Service has been unbelievable — regardless of what people say about it, it is phenomenal.'

COLE EXCITED BY LUKAKU ARRIVAL

Manchester United legend Andrew Cole is looking forward to seeing Romelu Lukaku in action and believes the new signing will provide some of the goals he felt were missing last season.

The Belgium international is with his new team-mates in Los Angeles on Tour 2017, presented by Aon, after completing a high-profile transfer from Everton on Monday.

The 24-year-old hit 26 goals for the Toffees last season and Treble-winning striker Cole is confident he can replicate that form for his new club.

"He’s a massive signing," Cole told MUTV. "They’re all big-money signings nowadays but he’s proven in the Premier League. He’ll get goals and that’s what Manchester United missed last season. I think he’s got plenty of those in him.

"Since he left Chelsea earlier on in his career, the way he’s gone about his business is by getting goals. He did it at West Brom, then got quite a few more goals at Everton, and hopefully that trend will continue at Manchester United."

Untuk Jadi Juara, MU Harus Bikin Old Trafford Angker Lagi
Kris Fathoni W - detikSport

Hasilnya, The Red Devils mengawali dengan impresif setelah memenangi tiga pertandingan awalnya.

Q&A: COLE ON HIS HEALTH, ZLATAN AND LUKAKU

Manchester United legend Andy Cole is excited for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return, potentially over the festive period, after meeting his fellow striker at the gym.

As followers of Cole's Instagram account will know, he has been working hard on his health and fitness after undergoing a life-changing kidney transplant surgery in April of this year.

The much-loved Treble winner is occasionally using the facilities at the Aon Training Complex and he recently bumped into Ibra, who is currently completing his own rehabilitation from a serious knee injury.

Cole spoke to MUTV’s Stewart Gardner in Portugal this week to provide an insight into his health and recent meeting with Ibra, as well as the club's current no.9 Romelu Lukaku...

First of all, Andy, you’re looking great - how is your health?
I'm good. Mentally, I am good. I am getting there with hard work and a lot of perseverance. But I knew it was going to be tough, but not as tough as it has been. I have got my head around it now and I'm working as hard as I can do.

You’re regularly posting workout videos on Instagram and it looks like you’re fighting fit…
I am working as hard as I can you know, with limitations. My specialist tells me what I can and can't do. It has been a lot harder than I expected, but I am working to what I can do. Hopefully, this time next year, I will be able to do a lot more.

You’ve got a good training partner, too, in Zlatan Ibrahimovic. How is the big man?
He is doing very good. I had a chat with Zlatan when he was in the gym the other day. I think he is looking forward to coming back, most probably in December or January time. I think he will definitely bring something to the football team, as we already know. After last season, he was fantastic. It will be nice to see him back when he returns.

Suffering that injury in April and possibly coming back in December… It’s not bad, is it?
Yeah, December or January time, of course, it is not bad! But like he keeps saying, he is not human. I love his banter and I think his enthusiasm for the game of football, and what he is around the complex, speaks volumes about him.

We return to Premier League action on Saturday and a week after a draw at Anfield that drew criticism from some quarters. What did you make of that reaction?
It's a strange one because, to be brutally honest, there aren't many times when you go to Liverpool and draw 0-0. I can only think back to some of the games we had and we had some proper ding-dongs, when you knew you would get goals. But in the end, in the grand scheme of things, I think 0-0 at Anfield is a good result because you have not lost the game.

Romelu Lukaku scored 11 goals in his first 11 games, but was scrutinised for having a quiet game at Liverpool. Does that show a United striker has to expect such a spotlight?
I don't think he will take it on board, to be honest. I think people looked at his record when he was at Everton and West Brom, and that he had never done particularly well against the big teams. He never seemed to get himself a goal or get involved, but I think that will change at United. It was very difficult for him at Liverpool because he didn't have many touches of the ball. But with the way the game went, he was always going to find it difficult and he did do. The flak he got was unwarranted but that is what he has to expect at Manchester United. Without doubt, he will take it in his stride.

Default Re: Andy Cole

ANDY COLE: I OWE MY CAREER TO BRISTOL CITY

Andy Cole believes he would not have become a Manchester United and Premier League legend without his formative spell at Bristol City, our Carabao Cup quarter-final opponents.

The former England international began his professional playing career at Arsenal and made one senior appearance for the Gunners, before joining the Robins on loan in March 1992.

Later that summer, Cole became the Robins' most-expensive player in history following a £500,000 transfer and he went on to score 12 goals in 29 matches throughout that 1992/93 campaign. The striker’s impressive record attracted the interest of Newcastle United and the rest, as they say, is history.

Ahead of our tie at Ashton Gate on Wednesday night, Cole spoke exclusively to MUTV's Stewart Gardner about the importance of his time with Bristol City and why he owes his career to them…

You played at Ashton Gate back in 1992/93 - it has changed a bit since then, right?
Just a little bit! The stadium is definitely now to Premier League standard. Unfortunately, when I played here in the early 1990s, it was nowhere near that. But the chairman who owns the club has put his money in, and quite a bit of money, and it is now Premier League standard for sure.

How important was that part of your career?
It was massive. Personally, without this, I don't think I would have achieved what I did in my career. For me to come to Bristol City at that time was a massive part of my career. I am forever indebted to them, for spending that kind of money on a kid who had basically played half a game. You know, £500,000 was a lot of money back then.

You had a great partnership with a great Polish player, Dariusz ‘Jackie’ Dziekanowski...
Yeah, what a player he was! I was here for a year and then I was sold. The senior pros helped me out, and there were a lot of good senior pros. You mention Jackie, there were Wayne Allison, Leroy Rosenior and Russell Osman, who took over as manager after Denis Smith got sacked.

Do you think this will be a test for United?
It will be because Bristol City are playing really good football. There is a big difference to last season when I thought they struggled a lot. But the way they have started this season has been great. I watched them at Sheffield United and they got a good result. This is the quarter-final of the cup, though, so you would expect a tough test. Man United are playing well. It wasn't the best result against Man City, but I still believe they should have enough to come here and win.

What sort of team will Jose Mourinho pick?
There is no doubt that he will shuffle the pack because the festive period is upon us and there are a lot of games coming up. But whatever team he puts out will be strong, because this is Manchester United. There are some good players who haven't played as many minutes as they would have liked, so they might get an opportunity.

Do you see the boss taking it really seriously? He’s won it three times already…

Yes! It is a trophy. However people want to look at the League Cup, it gets you into Europe, it is a bit of silverware and your name is written on the cup. There is no doubt he will take it seriously. He won it last season, so why not this season as well?

Tickets sold out without going on general sale - what will the atmosphere be like?
It will be buzzing and you know the fans here are very passionate. Manchester United are coming to town and that doesn't happen every week. It will be a great atmosphere, there are two good teams, one doing well in the Championship and the other in the Premier League, so it will be a good game.

Nostalgia masa muda Andy Cole bersama The Magpies

Greatest individual seasons: Andy Cole brings the goals to Newcastle (1993/94)

We kick off our series looking back at the greatest ever individual seasons in Premier League history with Andy Cole's exceptional 1993/94 campaign – as told by Louis Massarella

June 1993. And Kevin Keegan, it seemed, knew something the rest of us didn’t. “If everyone gives him a chance, Andy Cole could be the answer to our dreams in this country,” purred the Newcastle manager.

True, King Keggy was prone to hyperbole, but had England not made a mess of World Cup qualification it’s conceivable that by the time Graham Taylor’s squad arrived in the USA, they would have possessed a striker in such hot form that anything would have been possible.

Whether he would have been picked is another matter entirely, though: Cole didn’t make his full England debut until March 1995, two months after his shock £7 million move to Manchester United. By then, the Toon Army must have wondered whether what had gone before was all a dream.

Goal machine

Keegan’s prophecy came off the back of Newcastle’s promotion to the Premier League, which was assured after Cole fired 12 goals from as many league games following a February move from Bristol City. Once the season had ended, Keegan invited his young striker into his office and told him: “I’m going to sign a player just for you.”

That player was Peter Beardsley, who at £1.5m was considered too expensive for a 32-year-old by the Newcastle board, but returned to his hometown club nevertheless. By the time the England linkman saw competitive action – his debut having been delayed by an elbow he received from Neil Ruddock against Liverpool in pre-season – Cole was up and running with five top-flight goals.

Lest we forget, Beardsley bagged 21 times in 1993/94 as Newcastle finished third, but it was Nottingham-born forward Cole who rightly grabbed the headlines with his explosive pace, elusive movement and unerring finishing.

Admittedly, these were different times. Lone strikers were rarely deployed – the partnership accounted for 68% of Newcastle’s goals – but Cole’s haul of 34 league strikes was staggering nevertheless, especially when you consider he wasn’t Newcastle’s penalty taker and was backed by a midfield that was functional rather than flair-filled.

“When Andy’s playing you can hit the pass blind know he’ll be there,” said one of those unsung heroes, Scott Sellars, who would ultimately be replaced by David Ginola. Keegan, meanwhile, called 22-year-old Cole “the country’s most exciting player”, comparing him to Newcastle’s greatest No.9 up to that point, Jackie Milburn.

Unlikely hero

But aside from the fact that he wasn’t a centre-forward in the traditional St James’ Park mould – although he did have a sinewy strength that belied his slight frame – there was another notable difference between Cole and previous Gallowgate End legends. “If you'd said 10 years ago that the hero of the Toon Army would be a black lad, you would probably have got some pretty strange looks,” explained Newcastle fanzine The Mag, perhaps recalling another striker, Tony Cunningham, who was cruelly nicknamed ‘Blackie Milburn’ less than a decade earlier.

“However, the impact that Andy Cole has had on Newcastle is startling. He’s educated anybody who is still living in the past… anybody who now thinks we would be better off without black players… with his devastating pace and his eye for goal.”

Indeed, Cole received nothing but adoration from the Geordie public (although some of his family had received racial abuse on visiting him). But he wasn’t entirely happy with his lot on Tyneside. “All people want to do around here is talk football, football, football,” he said at the time, reiterating the point to FourFourTwo many years later. “I can’t do that, I have to get away from it.”

Sooner and more permanently than anybody had expected, as it turned out. While the goals continued to flow – and every type of goal, too – Cole and Keegan were never exactly bosom buddies. The striker, who delayed a meeting with his would-be manager so he could do his laundry before he joined from Bristol City, was dropped for a League Cup game in October 1993 after a training ground argument between the two.

A year later, and having picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year award, Cole was still banging in the goals – 15 in 18 games in the 1994/95 season before a nine-game scoring drought that, in hindsight, suggested all was not well.

“I loved my football at Newcastle, but I felt trapped,” Cole told FFT. The club were only too willing to cash in, and Keegan memorably had to explain the sale to irate fans on the steps of St James’ Park.

Cole never did become the answer to England’s dreams, scoring just once in 15 games despite a stellar career at Old Trafford. If an English striker scored 41 goals in all competitions this season, though, it’s safe to assume he’d get the chance to prove he could be.

Manchester United legend Andy Cole reveals plans for sporting comeback after life-saving kidney op

The former footie star says he's going to "get back in the gym" and hopes to take part in the British Transplant Games

Manchester United legend Andy Cole is planning a brave sporting comeback - after his nephew donated him a kidney in a life-saving operation.

The famed former England striker is set to be an ambassador for the British Transplant Games after his starring role in the Mirror's Change the Law for Life campaign.

The former Newcastle frontman joined the crusade to introduce the opt out system on organ donation on the eve of the vital February 23 vote in Parliament.

The dad-of-two spoke of his pride in his nephew Alexander Palmer, 29, who saved his life by donating his kidney to Andy in 2015.

In a moving interview, he told how the op had changed his outlook on life. Now he has been invited to promote the Transplant Games in Birmingham this summer - and may even take part.

He said: “I have had a lot to deal with health wise, nothing is ever plain sailing, that is part and parcel of having a transplant. I have two children who I want to see grow up. It does give you a different outlook on life.

“They have asked me to be an ambassador at the Games - and I said ‘of course I will’. This is a cause that will stay close to my heart for the rest of my life.

“I will take any opportunity to help others.”

Cole, 46, has been unable to play football since the op because of the risk of injury or damage to his kidney.

But he could yet take part in the Games in future, adding: “I am going to get myself back in the gym. It will be a question of what they allow me to do.

“With my sporting background I might end up winning something! I would love to play football but because it is a contact sport, and I could take a few bangs, I have not been given the go-ahead to play just yet.

"But I will be involved in the Games in some capacity, it just depends on what I can do.”

Speaking of the Mirror campaign, he said: “It is a great initiative. So many people have asked me what they can do to help. I just think it is really good and like to think being involved had some impact.”

With nephew Alexander Palmer, who donated his kidney

He met fellow campaigners whose lives had been saved by transplants, and he said: “Their experience was the same as mine, and I just thought ‘wow’ it is not just me.

“It was about giving something back. People like my nephew, the team I had at hospital, they were brilliant.

“It was great to highlight what those people have done. The change in law will save lives and that is what this is all about, that is the most important thing.”

Andy was supported by wife Shirley, who forced him to seek medical attention, their children Devante, 22, and 16-year-old Faith, and his entire family.

The number of transplant donors has risen by 11 per cent over the past 12 months.

Figures from the Organ Donation Register for 2017-18 showed a record 1,575 people gave the gift of life last year after losing their own, 162 more than the previous year.

Professor James Neuberger, chair of the Games Local Organising Committee, said: “We are honoured to have such a great ambassador to not only promote the Games, but the message of organ donation.

“We hope the Games will not only show the huge benefits that organ donation gives to both recipients and donor families but also show all that Birmingham has to offer as a great city with world class facilities.”

Labour MP Geoffery Robinson, whose Private Members Bill will see our ‘opt out’ system introduced in England and Ireland so that everyone is presumed to be a donor unless they ask not to be, described the increase as “fantastic.”

Dr Paul Harden, a transplant physician at Oxford University Hospitals and chairman of the Transplant Games, said: “Forty per cent of the population are not donating organs. I see patients die because of this. The Mirror campaign has been crucial in raising awareness.”

Default Re: Andy Cole

'I still don't believe that he's playing to his strengths': Andy Cole says Romelu Lukaku must play his natural game to score more Manchester United goals

* Andy Cole says Romelu Lukaku did 'brilliantly' to score 27 goals this season
* He could scored even more goals if Jose Mourinho played him to his strengths
* Lukaku must exploit his strength and power with Manchester United next season

Romelu Lukaku will score even more goals for Manchester United if he starts playing to his strengths, says former Old Trafford favourite Andy Cole.

The Belgium international has hit the net 27 times in his first season at United and is expected to feature in the FA Cup final at Wembley this weekend after missing the last three games with an ankle injury.

But Cole believes Lukaku could be even more prolific if he used his pace and power to run at teams rather than having the ball passed to his feet too often in a team that doesn't create as many chances as United sides of the past.

'He's had a massive season, fair play to him,' said Cole. 'I think he's played really well. He's been consistent, he's not had the opportunity to have much rest, with Zlatan (Ibrahimovic) being injured and then moving on, so this season he's done really well in a team that doesn't create many chances. To get 27 goals, whether from a half-chance or a full chance, is brilliant.

'I still don't believe when I watch him play that he's actually playing to his strengths. If you look at the way he played at Everton, to the way he plays now, it's totally different.

'If he starts playing to his strengths, and taking advantage of what he has as an athlete - his strength and power - and starts running in behind and stretching teams, you'll get even more out of him.

'If you look at the modern game now, all the forwards want the ball to their feet. There could be 20 yards of space in behind, but no-one runs in behind.

'I look at Lukaku and I think to myself, "does anyone really want to chase him?". I really don't think so.

'If you look at what Mo Salah has done this season, a lot goes through him, even though the three of them (Salah, Mane, Firmino) are fantastic. If you look at the way he plays, he plays to his strengths.

Romelu Lukaku could improve his goals return at Manchester United if he plays to his strengths. The Belgian striker scored 27 goals in his first season under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford. But he may be able to score even more if he starts exploiting his power and strength more

'They give the ball to him early doors and he'll crack on and do what he does and nick a goal. He's ended up getting 43 goals this season.' Cole believes Lukaku has grown into his role at United following a £75m summer move from Everton, and answered the critics who point to his lack of finesse.

'I think he will have realised, early doors, there are no weekends off playing for Man United,' added Cole. 'At Everton or West Brom, when he was there, you could have a couple of weekends off.

'He got a little bit of flak when he went through a bit of a barren spell, but now I think he genuinely does appreciate that when you play for Man United, you have to be involved every game if you want to succeed, and people will dig you out for the slightest things if not.

'I don't think it's pressure, I think it's enjoyment, because you know you're playing for the biggest club in the world and people are going to ask questions of you.

'At Man United, you're expected to win, regardless of what position you're in. A lot of people might will be looking at Man United even more now they're not winning the Premier League, and questioning whether player X, Y or Z is good enough.

'For a lot of the players it's about proving they're more than good enough to go on and win things.

'I think people are starting to appreciate him even more. I know people question him about this or that, his first touch lets him down or whatever.

'But I've watched him closely this season and I think fair play to him, because he's had a really good season in a team that is still trying to gel, still trying to find the right pattern of play and system, so I think he's done really well.'

Cole also expressed sympathy with Anthony Martial who has struggled this season after falling out of favour under Jose Mourinho. The young Frenchman started less than half of United's Premier League games, and has been left out of France's squad for the World Cup.

'It's been a strange position with Martial because you look at him and everyone knows he is a talented kid,' added Cole.

'I am not going to question his attitude because I don't know him well enough, but he definitely has the talent.

'Knowing the game, it's very hard when the manager doesn't pick you and you play in the one game and you are judged on the one game. If everyone got judged on one game you would be putting a different team out every week.

'I don't think he has had a run in the team whereby he can justify being in the team every week because his runs have been very short, just like Marcus (Rashford). He's not had a run.

'If you are only going to have one-and-a-half games, you are going to be scratching your head and say "it's going to take me a little longer than that".

'You look around the team and you could play for or five games in a row and then all of a sudden the form is in. You need that kind of run, especially if you are a centre-forward or a left or right-sided attacking player. Everything is based on confidence.

'We're all human. We all question ourselves. So to run into form after one-and-a-half or two games, it's not an easy position to be in.'
