Harry Maguire edges closer to £75m Manchester United move after telling Leicester: I'm ready to leave now

* Harry Maguire has told Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers he wants to leave
* Maguire is looking to secure a £75million summer move to Manchester United
* Manchester City are interested in Maguire but United are more likely to sign him

Harry Maguire has pushed a £75million move to Manchester United closer by telling Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers and team-mates that he wants to leave.

Maguire, 26, informed Rodgers and the rest of the Foxes squad of his intentions during their pre-season training camp in France, hoping it will ease negotiations between the two clubs.

Twelve months ago, the England defender failed to secure a move to Old Trafford despite heavy interest from their manager Jose Mourinho and he has decided to be more proactive on this occasion to avoid a repeat.

Manchester City also remain contenders for Maguire's signature but appear less likely to match Leicester's valuation which would equal the world-record fee paid for a defender when Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk.

Maguire, part of a 31-man Leicester party who trained last week in Evian by Lake Geneva, is understood to be happy at the prospect of joining United despite the club failing to qualify for the Champions League.

He believes after two successful seasons at Leicester, in which he became a World Cup hero with England, it is the right time to further his career.

Leicester were reluctant to sell unless it became clear Maguire wanted out and now that has been done, it is believed they will not stand in his way. Rodgers would be given funds to sign a replacement and James Tarkowski and Lewis Dunk have been linked.

But the Foxes boss is already well served in central defence with Jonny Evans, his former Celtic loanee Filip Benkovic, £20million Turkish prospect Caglar Soyuncu and club captain Wes Morgan, so could use the Maguire cash to strengthen other positions.

United, currently on tour in Australia, want to make at least two more signings to add to £50m defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Welsh flyer Daniel James. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's priority is a combative midfielder, with Sporting Lisbon's Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff from Newcastle among his targets.

United baulked at Leicester's £75m asking price for Maguire after the World Cup but after a dismal season finishing sixth in the Premier League, there is an acceptance they have to rebuild the squad and sign players in their early or mid-twenties who can give years of service.

Harry Maguire keen to join Manchester United or Manchester City but Leicester want world-record £85m

* Leicester will let Harry Maguire join Manchester United or Manchester City
* However, they must meet the Foxes' world-record £85m valuation to seal deal
* Maguire has spoken to Leicester but has not submitted a formal transfer request

Harry Maguire has confirmed his desire to join Manchester United or Manchester City should they meet Leicester's City's valuation.

Leicester have assured the 26-year-old England international during talks at their training camp in France that they will not stand in his way but they still want a record fee of £85million.

As Sportsmail reported last week, United have new-found optimism as they believe they are in the strongest position even though they remain short of Leicester's price tag.

Harry Maguire wants to leave Leicester and join Manchester United or Manchester City

Maguire knows United assistant manager Mike Phelan well going back to their time at Hull City together and that relationship will play a key role in their pursuit.

Ultimately, however, they must improve their offer with Leicester in no rush to sell before the August 8 deadline.

Manchester City have discussed an offer closer to £50m and the prospect of offering players in return but Leicester only want a straight cash deal.

Maguire is not viewing the chat as a transfer request and does not plan to agitate for a move despite the sentiment of his meeting.

He is set to miss Leicester’s friendly against Scunthorpe on Tuesday night as he returned for pr*e-season later than other members of the squad after being given time off due to his participation in the UEFA Nations League.

'We've had no bid close to our valuation': Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers warns Manchester United over Harry Maguire pursuit after defender scores in friendly win

* Harry Maguire has been the subject of several bids from Man United this summer
* Leicester are believed to value the centre back at £80million
* The defender scored in a 3-0 friendly win over Cambridge on Tuesday night
* Rodgers says he will only leave if his valuation is met by United or another club

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has warned Manchester United he is under no pressure to sell defender Harry Maguire and says the club are yet to receive an offer close to his valuation.

Last week Rodgers confirmed the Foxes had rejected two bids from United for the centre-back, with the club believed to be holding out for a fee of over £80million.

Maguire scored in Leicester's 3-0 pre-season friendly win over Cambridge United on Tuesday night and Rodgers was in bullish mood after the game.

Maguire scored a trademark header in Leicester's 3-0 win over Cambridge on Tuesday night. After the game Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers said the club were under no pressure to sell. Rodgers also praised Maguire's conduct amid continued interest from Manchester United

'The club is in a great state of health because there's no pressure to sell any player. And if a player does leave Leicester City, the valuation will have to be met,' Rodgers said.

'We have a top level player, looked at by top level clubs. I respect that because I understand why they would, but there's been no offer near to our valuation that that would even make us have a look.

'How he has handled it has been fantastic. Harry has never wavered.'

United have also been linked with a move for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, but Maguire remains their first choice option.

The 26-year-old is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford and Rodgers admitted he won't stand in his way if a big enough offer is made.

'If there's a valuation met that pleases the ownership, then there's a decision to be made for the player.'

Leicester demand more of world record £80m Harry Maguire fee upfront... because they do not think Manchester United will qualify for the Champions League next season

* Harry Maguire made what could be his last appearance for Leicester on Saturday
* Talks are continuing over an £80million move to Old Trafford this summer
* Manchester United have so far offered £72m for the 26-year-old England ace

Manchester United need to pay a greater percentage of Harry Maguire's world-record fee up front – because Leicester aren't convinced they'd receive add-ons for Champions League qualification.

Maguire made what could be his farewell appearance for Leicester in a pre-season friendly at Stoke on Saturday with talks continuing over an £80million move to Old Trafford.

United have so far offered £72m for the 26-year-old England defender with additional bonus payments due based on trophies and finshing in the top four.

However, given that United have failed to qualify for the Champions League in three of the six seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Leicester want a higher guarantee in case United continue to struggle.

There is still an expectation that a deal can be thrashed out between the clubs this week that suits both parties.

Leicester's owner Top Srivaddhanaprabha wants to justify Maguire's departure by pointing to a world-record fee for a defender that surpasses the £75m paid by Liverpool to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk, of which £70m was up front.

Harry Maguire made what could be his final appearance for Leicester on Saturday. Manchester United need to pay a greater percentage of Maguire's world-record fee up front. Maguire is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's No 1 centre back target, but Leicester want £80million

United's negotiator Ed Woodward prides himself on being a good negotiator and doesn't want to be seen as having been exploited in the Maguire deal.

While frustrated at the length of the transfer saga, Maguire hopes his good conduct throughout will help Leicester reach an agreement with United.

The popular centre-half, who became a national hero for his performances at last year's World Cup, has made himself available for all of Leicester's friendly games this month in order to maintain his fitness.

And while he has privately told manager Brendan Rodgers he would like to join United, he has not put pressure on the club by putting in a formal transfer request.

The final 10 days of the transfer window promises to be hectic for United who have plenty of ground to make up on rivals following last season's distant sixth-place finish.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has only signed youngsters Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James so far and wants another top-class midfielder to join Maguire, with Tottenham's Christian Eriksen under consideration.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is also pushing his club to make a £150m bid for Paul Pogba once Gareth Bale leaves the Bernabeu though United are adamant they are not encouraging any interest from the Spanish giants.

They are likelier to let Romelu Lukaku leave with Inter Milan and Juventus interested. The Belgian hasn't played for United during pre-season because of a minor injury and fears being priced out of a move by a £75m price tag.

Maguire's situation is similar to Kieran Tierney at Celtic with the Scottish club unhappy with the way Arsenal's £25m bid has been structured in terms of bonuses and the length of time for payments.
