POGBA ON REAL: WE WANT TO BEAT THE BEST

Paul Pogba believes the upcoming matches against Real Madrid and Barcelona are important to Manchester United’s long-term ambition to become the best team in Europe.

The Reds have so far beaten MLS teams LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake on Tour 2017, presented by Aon, as well as Premier League rivals Manchester City in Thursday’s match in Houston, Texas.

The next big challenge is the International Champions Cup encounter with La Liga champions and UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday.

Pogba is unlikely to start that game after playing the full match against Pep Guardiola’s Blues, as Jose Mourinho plans to rotate his squad to give everybody fitness-building minutes in the US.

Whichever players are selected to face Zinedine Zidane’s kings of Europe, Pogba believes United will step up and relish the challenge of competing against the best.

"The big games keep on coming,” Pogba told MUTV following the comfortable victory in the Manchester derby this week. “The players in the next team want to play against the best. We want to play against the best, we want to beat the best and we want to become the best.

“Those games are very important for us because it is not like the game against Real Salt Lake when they want to prove themselves against Manchester United. You try to play but mentally it is different. Now it is a big team, as big as Manchester United. You don't want to lose against them.”

PREVIEW: MANCHESTER UNITED V REAL MADRID

So, another game, another win? Let's hope so! Manchester United's preparations for the 2017/18 Premier League season could hardly be going better at the moment. Victories over LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and, most recently, Manchester City mean the Reds have a 100 per cent record during Tour 2017, presented by Aon - but the tough tests aren't over just yet. This Sunday (23 July), Jose Mourinho's men are back in California to take on Spanish and European champions Real Madrid. The clash will be held at the 68,000-seater Levi's Stadium, home of NFL team San Francisco 49ers, and is our first in this summer's International Champions Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 14:00 local time (22:00 BST in the UK).

How can I watch it? Fans who subscribe to MUTV on Sky or Virgin Media, the club’s MUTV app or online at the recently launched mutv.com have access to watch all of the team’s pre-season games. With no extra cost to subscribers, fans can watch all seven of United’s tour games live.

What happened in our previous tour games?
Well, as mentioned, the Reds claimed the bragging rights in the first-ever Manchester derby to be held outside of the UK on Thursday night, running out 2-0 winners in Houston thanks to first-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford. Both United and City wore special-edition shirts bearing the iconic Manchester worker bee image on the chest, and the match-worn jerseys will now be sold on eBay, with all proceeds going to those affected by the Manchester Arena terror attack. Just days earlier, Lukaku scored his first goal for the club during a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake, after Mourinho's men had kicked off this year's tour by breezing past LA Galaxy. Following the win over City, the boss said: "It's 10 days of work and there is a long time to go. We have two more matches in the US and then we go to Europe. There are fantastic people in the group, the new guys feel at home immediately. Everything is going well."

Any team news? Mourinho confirmed in his post-match press conference on Thursday that United will continue to play with a back four against Real, and while he revealed that Victor Lindelof will feature, he stopped short of naming his centre-back partner for the game. Jose also hinted last week that those who played in the latter stages against City (Tim Fosu-Mensah, Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial) would get more game-time against Madrid, but Juan Mata remains doubtful for the clash after suffering a knock in the win over Real Salt Lake.

What about our opponents? Like United, Real are set for a busy pre-season as a result of a successful campaign in 2016/17. Sunday's match will actually be their first of the summer, with Zinedine Zidane's men also scheduled to face City, Barcelona and MLS All-Stars in America before returning to Europe. After winning La Liga, Los Blancos will also compete in the Spanish Super Cup against Barca, who lifted the Copa del Rey last term. Real's star-studded pre-season squad includes the likes of Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale, as well as eight youth team players, though former United attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has been granted extra time off following his participation in the Confederations Cup with Portugal.

Don't we play Real Madrid again soon? That's right. The sides' UEFA Super Cup meeting is in Macedonia on 8 August. It's the annual match between the winners of the Europa League and the Champions League, with Real booking their place by beating Juventus 4-1 in the final of the latter at the start of June. United, of course, are involved this year after that memorable win over Ajax in Stockholm back in May.

EARLY TEAM NEWS FOR REAL MADRID V UNITED

Jose Mourinho plans to rotate his Manchester United team for Sunday’s International Champions Cup match against Real Madrid, providing more minutes for those who need them.

In the comfortable victories over MLS sides LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, the manager made 11 changes at half-time to make sure that almost every Red in the tour squad enjoyed at least 45 minutes of action.

Then, during the following win over Premier League rivals Manchester City in Houston, Mourinho only made four substitutions at the break and reserved his other replacements for shortly after the hour mark. He interestingly changed three of the back four in the interval and plans to do the same against Real.

“We played with two back fours,” the boss said at his post-match press conference in Texas on Thursday night. “We played with one in the first half and one in the second half. It was just Antonio Valencia who played a bit more because he didn't play much in the match against Real Salt Lake.

"We played with two back fours and two goalkeepers. Against Real Madrid we will do the same. I don’t change my words because we win or because we lose. We are here to train and to give everybody time.

“In this game [against Manchester City] we played Eric Bailly with Phil Jones, and Chris Smalling with Victor Lindelof. The next game with Real Madrid I will change. I will play Lindelof with another one, and Bailly with another one. Everything is going okay for us."

REAL MADRID 1 MANCHESTER UNITED 1

Levi’s Stadium | Tour 2017, presented by Aon | Att: 65,109 | Scorers: Lingard 45+1, Casemiro penalty 69

MATCH REPORT

Manchester United defeated European champions Real Madrid in Santa Clara on penalties, after a first-half goal from the superb Jesse Lingard was cancelled out by Casemiro’s second-period penalty.

This was Real’s first match of their pre-season tour and manager Zinedine Zidane named a strong team that included star names Luca Modric, Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale. Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, made nine changes to his starting XI with only Marcus Rashford and Lingard retaining their places from the 2-0 win over Premier League rivals Manchester City in Texas four days earlier.

Lingard tested Keylor Navas with an early shot from range and the sharp Academy graduate went close again on 42 minutes with a rasping drive that flew wide. His goal finally arrived on the stroke of half-time, tapping home from close-range after a breathtaking dribble into the box from Anthony Martial. Real had the ball in the net a moment later through Marcelo but it was correctly ruled offside.

Jose made eight half-time substitutions and was forced to make a ninth on 51 minutes, when Ander Herrera left the field holding his ribs to be replaced by young Scott McTominay. Real then equalised through Casemiro from the penalty spot, after Victor Lindelof felled new signing Theo Hernandez.

Play was halted on 77 minutes for a second water break of the game, due to the searing Californian heat that made for difficult playing conditions. Fellaini went close to scoring a winner when shooting wide late on, but the game eventually went to a penalty shoot-out with the score level at full-time.

Martial, Mateo Kovacic, McTominay and Oscar missed the opening four spot-kicks, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Real Madrid's Luis Miguel Quezada converted successfully. Lindelof and Hernandez then missed as well, prior to Daley Blind scoring and Casemiro hitting the bar to conclude a 2-1 shoot-out win for United.

THE LINE-UPS
United:
Romero (De Gea 46), Fosu-Mensah (Blind 46), Bailly (Lindelof 46), Jones (Smalling 46), Darmian (Valencia 78), Carrick (Herrera 46 (McTominay 51)), Fellaini, Pereira (Pogba 46), Lingard (Mkhitaryan 46), Martial, Rashford (Lukaku 46).
Sub not used: Tuanzebe.

Real Madrid*: Navas, Carvajal, Varane, Marcelo, Nacho, Isco, Kroos, Modric, Benzema, Bale, Vazquez.
Subs: Tejero, Gomez, Casilla, Franchu, Hakimi, Mayoral, Zidane, Quezada, Kovacic, Hernandez.
Booked: Oscar

*Real Madrid changes to be confirmed

TALKING POINT: LINGARD
The 24-year-old was a nuisance for the Real defence throughout his first-half appearance, registering three shots at target and scoring once late on. Former United player and MUTV commentator Bojan Djordjic was pleased with the player’s performance. “The movement from Jesse was really smart,” he told us at half-time. “You have to watch him off the ball. He always turns up in the right areas, he has excellent movement and that got him the goal. It looked like a simple goal for him but you have to get there in the first place. I was really impressed by him.”

NO RONALDO FOR REAL
Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the USA with his Real Madrid team-mates, because he is still enjoying his summer break following his participation at the Confederations Cup with Portugal. His home nation finished third in that competition that only concluded for him on 2 July. It remains unclear when he will return to action for Los Blancos, although it seems likely he will play against United in the UEFA Super Cup on 8 August.

TRENDING TOPIC: RONALD MCDONALD

We have become accustomed to unusual pre-match events here in the US. We had pyrotechnics in LA, a freakish storm in Salt Lake and a cameo from Drake in Houston, yet the sight of Ronald McDonald leading the teams out in San Jose arguably topped the lot! The mascot of the American fast food chain then shook each player’s hand before kick-off and that bizarre moment rapidly became a viral video on Twitter.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNITED?
The Reds will conclude the 18-day trip to the US with another eagerly anticipated International Champions Cup match, this time against the mighty Barcelona at the FedEx Field in Washington. The Reds will then fly home to Manchester immediately after that outing, but the pre-season matches do not finish there. Norwegian side Valerenga will provide the opposition in Oslo on 30 July, ahead of another practice match versus Sergio Romero’s former club Sampdoria in Dublin, Ireland, on 2 August.

WE'LL MEET AGAIN
Following the completion of the pre-season schedule, Real will provide the opposition once more in the Super Cup meeting in Macedonia. Mourinho and his players have been working towards that showpiece event all summer, as it offers the chance to lift silverware ahead of the Premier League campaign starting. If Sunday’s friendly in Santa Clara is anything to go by, we can expect a great evening in Skopje.

MOURINHO'S VIEWS ON WIN AND HERRERA INJURY

Jose Mourinho spoke to MUTV and to journalists at his post-match press conference as he reflected on Manchester United's penalty shoot-out victory over Real Madrid at Levi's Stadium...

IMPRESSIVE FIRST HALF

"Good training [for us]. It was a very good first half against a top Real side. I think we lost motivation to play against their young players. We lost intensity, we lost appetite. I think the boys who played in the second half, they were disappointed not to play against Real Madrid's best players and best team. The second half was not good but overall I am happy again."

STAYING HOPEFUL FOR HERRERA

"I just feel sorry for one more injury which I hope is not important. For Ander to come off after 10 minutes, it has to be painful. But sometimes painful doesn't mean there is a real problem, so let's wait."

STRANGE SHOOT-OUT

"Yeah, three out of 10 [were scored]. But it's pre-season and to be honest, I didn't choose my best penalty-takers."

MARTIAL'S CONFIDENCE GROWING

"Obviously we want more consistency in his talent. I think today was positive for him, that is why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch. He was enjoying it, he was trying new things, and it is important in these friendly matches to try new things, which he did. That is important for his confidence. Young players still need time to learn and time to improve. It is also his personality. I can say that he is training better than before, he is working harder than before, his ambition is to try to bring his talent in a consistent way."

PRAISE FOR ZIDANE'S SUCCESS

"It is no surprise. It is a great period for Real Madrid to win so many titles, they have amazing individual quality and an amazing relationship with the ball. You cannot argue with that. In terms of their individual relationship with the ball the quality is absolutely amazing."

A PERFECT PRE-SEASON

"It is not a concern [to have a post-match flight again]. For us there is not a lot of travel. We have organised the pre-season so we are based in LA for 11 days, which is fantastic. We are always in the same hotel, the same training ground. The flights are quite short flights. Now we are on our way back home. We are here and now we go to DC, which is halfway home almost. In terms of jet lag it is halfway home. These next three days in DC are not a problem. After that we have two more matches to play in Norway and Ireland, travelling on the same day with short flights. I am really happy with our pre-season. If Mata and Ander are not long-term problems then I would say it is perfect."
