Fountains of youth
Soccernet, Miguel Delaney - August 27, 2011

Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex have been key in bringing young players through

After the joyous vibrancy of Monday night at Old Trafford, it's incredible to think how jaded Manchester United looked just 10 months ago.

Wayne Rooney wanted to go to Manchester City. The club seemingly didn't want to sign premium-level new players. But, after the late October win over Bursaspor, Alex Ferguson wanted to send a message.

"I had a player once who said to me that Rooney and [Cristiano] Ronaldo weren't good enough and he was not prepared to wait until they were good enough. But that's the trouble with potential. People don't identify potential. They're very poor at it. I've identified all my life the potential in young people. I know potential. I know how to develop and have faith in it. And young people surprise you when given the opportunity. That's what this club is all about."

Considering the events of the time, as well as Rooney's apparent criticism of what the club had come to be about, Ferguson's words seemed no more than an admirable - but ultimately empty - statement of defiance. The average age of the first XI was touching 30 and their performances were barely getting past patchy. With the Glazers seemingly refusing to invest, Rooney's complaints appeared justified.

Typically, though, it was Ferguson who would eventually be vindicated.

A 22-year-old in Javier Hernandez would transform from an impact sub into a Champions League match-winner. The 20-year-old Chris Smalling would mature into a modern defender. Nani would continue his progress from one of the most wasteful players in the Premier League to the most productive and a forgotten Fabio would overtake his twin brother Rafael. At Sunderland, Danny Welbeck was building up the confidence he needed to receive a chance at United while Tom Cleverley was doing the same at Wigan.

One of the results - beyond last season's title and Champions League final appearance - was a thrilling 3-0 win over Tottenham delivered by a team with an average age of 23. United have been, quite literally, rejuvenated.

Amid all the praise for Ferguson's faith in potential, though, it's been overlooked that the average age of Arsenal's team last weekend was also 23.

Or, if not quite overlooked, then predictably viewed through an entirely different prism. Whereas belief in youth has brightened United, it continues to slowly bring Arsenal down from the position they were in seven years ago.

To a degree, the issue seems to define the differences between the two managers. Indeed, two phrases that have been repeated a lot around the Emirates and Old Trafford over the last while are particularly pointed.

In Manchester: "Wenger talks about youth. Fergie just goes and does it."

In London: "We don't need a change in manager, we just need the manager to change."

Either way, both men have always seen investment in youth as their defining managerial traits. And, given that the issue fundamentally boils down to numbers, it's interesting to directly compare their records.

In 25 years at Old Trafford, Ferguson has given 103 young players their debut (for the purposes of clarity, we've included both academy graduates and those signed before the age of 20): that's 4.1 a season. In 15 years at the Emirates, meanwhile, Wenger has blooded 84: that's 5.6 a season.

From those numbers:

• 23% of Ferguson's graduates have played over 30 games for his club; 31% of Wenger's have
• 12% of Ferguson's graduates have played over 100 games for his club; 15% of Wenger's have
• 10% of Ferguson's graduates have played over 200 games for his club; 5% of Wenger's have
• 23% of Ferguson's graduates have succeeded elsewhere in the Premier League or another elite European top flight; 26% of Wenger's have
• 1% of Ferguson's graduates have been sold to a club at Manchester United's level; 7% of Arsenal's have been sold to a club at Arsenal's level

And, perhaps most tellingly:

• 23% of Ferguson's graduates have won medals with his club; 13% of Wenger's have

To a degree, the numbers prove what we already know: Wenger is more likely to initially flood young players into his squad, Ferguson is better at finishing the job - in a few senses. But that also perhaps raises issues about both men's clubs as actual breeding grounds beyond the academies.

When Wenger first arrived at Arsenal, for example, he could neither introduce a nucleus of readymade graduates nor immediately enforce his ideals. Rather, he had to adapt around the existing qualities of that old Highbury core. In the process, though, they all became better players.

The success that mix brought entrusted Wenger with almost total control of the club's playing structure. But it has also meant that, since then, he has altered it so his youth system only produces particular types of players. Famously, Wenger has physical and technical ideals for every position. And the result, effectively, is that Arsenal release a stream of similar prototypes.

Tom Cleverley: The latest young United star

Contrast that with Manchester United, where there has always been a huge variety of player styles produced - most notably in this crop. But Ferguson also tends to get the timing of their introduction right. Unlike Arsenal, there's always been a blend of proven winners and potential brilliance - right back to the Double-winning 1995-96 team. Wenger began to forego that complementary mix in 2004. Admittedly, as we've seen with Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, not always by choice.

But then that also raises questions over whether Wenger has created a damaging cycle for himself. Indeed, one of those proven winners - Tony Adams - relays an enlightening story about Wenger's treatment of Lilian Thuram at Monaco. Despite the reputation the defender eventually forged, at first he offered up regular errors.

"It cost them game after game. But he kept him on... and encouraged him and encouraged him. Great for the player. No good for [Wenger] and the team."

History has clearly repeated itself.

But not in every sense. Sunday's match at Old Trafford is likely to be a far cry from the testosterone-fuelled face-offs between men like Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane. Another difference, however, is that - on the evidence of the past seven years, let alone the last 10 months - only one of the teams is likely to reach the kind of level those forerunners once did.

Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson praised by England manager Fabio Capello for wealth of talent
It was at England’s bleak training base in the north of South Africa, having returned from a humiliation at the hands of Germany in Bloemfontein, that Fabio Capello appeared at his most defeated.

His veteran side had been given the runaround by a young German team and, try as he might, he could not make a convincing case for England’s future. “Out with the old, in with the new,” cried his critics. But where was this next generation?

What a difference a year makes. Sitting in a conference room in a Sloane Square hotel, Capello is speaking with enthusiasm and excitement.
He is working his way through his options ahead of the crucial euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales, to be played on Friday and Tuesday week. The man he has to thank for his high spirits? Sir Alex Ferguson.
“He has surprised me with what he has done,” said Capello of the man who, last Friday, was heavily critical of the Football Association’s treatment of Manchester United.

“He has completely changed his team. He has brought in Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley and these young players have found their form really quickly. We need to wait for what happens in the Arsenal game but there are a lot of Manchester United players in the provisional squad.

“After the game they played against Manchester City at Wembley they have improved. The game they played against Tottenham was really important because when you play away it’s easier to play without the pressure of the home fans. They are playing important games with confidence and they are improving.”

Many of the best national teams have a strong identification with one club side (Spain and Barcelona for example) and, thanks to Ferguson’s decision to infuse his champions with young English talent, United could start assuming that role for England.

Against Arsenal today, Ferguson is likely to name six players in his starting line up who are in Capello’s provisional squad.
Rio Ferdinand, recovered from injury, and Wayne Rooney are well established for club and country while Ashley Young won over both Capello and Ferguson with the improvement in his game in the last campaign for Aston Villa. It is the other four, though, who are getting Capello excited.

Ferguson has been effusive in his praise of these younger players and, as he has so frequently in the past, has placed his trust in them to deliver.
Arsenal will be another test. While they have been weakened by the loss of players through sales, suspension and injury, there are still world class operators in Arsène Wenger’s team, players who will push the United youngsters to their limits.

For Capello it will be an interesting assessment of their capacities against top opposition before he names his final squad this evening.
Welbeck will find few tougher opponents than Thomas Vermaelen, Smalling will have to cope with the acceleration and direct dribbling of Andrei Arshavin while Cleverley will get an early taste of the quality of Welshman Aaron Ramsey. Perhaps the player in for the hardest afternoon is Jones, who must deal with one of the best strikers in the world in Robin van Persie. That will make for interesting watching as the 19 year-old is the player Capello most enthused about.

“He is so young and so good. This is a really good talent for England,” Capello said. “Jones is a talent like Jack Wilshere. He is a player who always seems to play really well, at every level you play him. Look at the game he played against Tottenham last week.
“Every time he received the ball he looked confident, the way he passed the ball, the way he demanded the ball. It is not easy to find a player this young who plays with such confidence. He is the future.
“His talent is incredible. When you find this kind of talent you need to use it. I think he will come into the team, sure, but we need to wait. He has played one [Premier League] game [for United].

“Potentially he is fantastic but he needs to play more games with United. I remember with Wilshere he started playing and got better and better and after four months he reached his top level. I understood then that he was ready to play for the national side. Jones is the same. We need to wait some games and maybe he will play against Montenegro or in our friendly games.”
While Jones received the most praise from Capello he has less chance of starting in Sofia than his team-mates. With Ferdinand expected to be fit to partner John Terry, Jones will probably be on the bench.

Smalling is expected to win his first cap in that game, though. “He was a centre back and is now playing as a right back and this is really interesting for me,” added Capello. “He is really improving and playing with confidence. He does not play with fear and always goes forward, not missing an idea.”
Also pushing for a starting place is Welbeck, whose bright start to the season — he was man of the match against Tottenham — has not gone unnoticed. With Andy Carroll struggling to find his best fitness and form, Welbeck could edge in ahead of him.
“Welbeck played for me against Ghana for 10 minutes,” Capello said. “He is matched very well with Rooney, especially in the movement without the ball. He made some mistakes in the first half [against Spurs] and missed a lot of passes but he is an interesting player.
“Now I need to choose the player that will play with Rooney. It’s interesting. We have to wait.”

With Wilshere and Steven Gerrard injured and Michael Carrick not yet match fit there could also be a role to play for Cleverley.
“I saw him last year at Wigan but when you play at United it’s different,” he said. “You always need to win and this is the big difference. He’s good, he’s improving and I selected him for the Holland friendly. He’s intelligent on the pitch and he can play in front of the back four, he can play in the centre of midfield or he can play a bit further forward. And every time he gets close to goal he shoots.”

Not that fans of other clubs should fear a complete United love-in. Capello is buoyant about the talent emerging across the Premier League, singling out Jake Livermore of Spurs, Emmanuel Frimpong at Arsenal and Everton’s highly promising 17-year-old midfielder Ross Barkley for praise.
The future looks a lot brighter than it did in Bloemfontein.

United's four:

Danny Welbeck, 20, striker

Capello was impressed by Welbeck’s performances on loan at Sunderland last season and would have called him up for the February friendly with Denmark were it not for a hamstring injury. He won his first cap against Ghana, his parents’ home country, and is now pushing Andy Carroll for his role in the starting XI against Bulgaria. Quick and technically gifted, Capello likes the way he combined with Wayne Rooney against Spurs last week.

Chris Smalling, 21, centre and right-back

Smalling had already attracted Capello’s admiration with his maturity in central defence last season and he was called up for the November friendly with France. It is, though, his switch to right-back at United that could accelerate his progress. With Glen Johnson injured the position is up for grabs and after some bold performances in his new role he should start against Bulgaria.

Tom Cleverley , 22, central midfield
Called up for the abandoned match with Holland when Frank Lampard pulled out. With Jack Wilshere injured and Michael Carrick not match fit, he is likely to be in again. After loans at Watford and Wigan, Ferguson has now brought him into his starting XI. Capello has followed him for some time and likes his “game intelligence”, and that he can play several roles in midfield.

Phil Jones, 19, central defence

Not since Jack Wilshere broke through last season has Capello spoken of a young player in such glowing terms. “He is the future,” Capello said. “Absolutely the future”. Jones had a fine season as centre-back or holding midfielder with Blackburn and has looked at ease since joining United. Has a special combination of old-school defending and composure on the ball.

dulu sempet gak percaya ane ama skuad mudanya fergie,
cukup satu kata, Trust to Fergie!
