MATCH PREVIEW: BOURNEMOUTH V UNITED

Setting the scene: United will be looking to immediately respond after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at home to relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion when making the midweek trip to the south coast to take on mid-table Bournemouth. The Reds still need five more points to guarantee Champions League football next season and will be hoping to take full advantage of the game in hand on third-placed Liverpool, who are one point behind United, in a bid to finish second in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s men, who had won five league games in a row before the surprise loss to the Baggies, can take a giant stride towards clinching the runners-up spot with three points at the Vitality Stadium, with four subsequent league games to play.

How can I follow it? Wednesday’s match will kick off at 19:45 BST and will be broadcast live on BT Sport in the UK. MUTV subscribers on Sky or Virgin Media, the MUTV app, or online at MUTV.com can enjoy match build-up from 17:45 BST on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game, before watching it in full at midnight. You can also keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and our official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What’s the team news? The boss said after last weekend’s game that his players have a chance to win a place in the starting line-up for Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham and he doesn’t plan to rotate his squad against Bournemouth. The only player expected to be absent for United is goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who has missed the last three games with an injury sustained on international duty with Argentina. Meanwhile, Bournemouth should only be without long-term absentees Tyrone Mings and Junior Stanislas (knee) and Adam Smith (MCL knee ligament).

How are Bournemouth doing? Sitting 10 points above the drop zone in 11th place with four games to play, the Cherries are all but assured of a fourth successive season of Premier League football and are just two points away from reaching the 40-point mark. Eddie Howe’s men have proved tough to beat in recent weeks, losing just three of their last 15 league matches. But they have only won one of the last eight – a 2-1 home win over bottom-club West Brom a month ago – and haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last nine. The Dorset-based outfit have beaten Chelsea and Arsenal in the second half of the season but lost 3-0 to Liverpool at Anfield last Saturday evening, having previously been unbeaten in three games.

What happened last time we met? The Reds secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Cherries at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Top scorer Romelu Lukaku got on the end of a Juan Mata cross to send a bullet header past Asmir Begovic in the 26th minute – a decisive goal which proved the difference between the sides and was later voted by fans as United’s Goal of the Month for December.

One to watch: A familiar face to Reds fans, Josh King was a United player for five years but spent most of his time at Old Trafford out on loan and left in 2013. The 26-year-old has found a new home at the Vitality Stadium and, although he hasn’t quite reached last season’s heights when he was Bournemouth’s top scorer with 16 goals, he still has a respectable seven goals and three assists in all competitions – only Callum Wilson has been involved in more goals for the Cherries. The Norwegian forward also has two goals in five previous appearances against United, including the winner in Bournemouth’s only Premier League win over the Reds to date in December 2015, and will be keen to make an impact against his former club once again.

When was our last trip to Bournemouth? United will travel to the Vitality Stadium for the first time since the opening weekend of last season. It will undoubtedly bring back fond memories for Mourinho as he returns to the scene of his first league win in charge as manager, back in August 2016. United ran out 3-1 winners on the day in the south-coast sunshine thanks to goals from Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with Adam Smith’s effort proving to be a consolation late on for the Cherries.

What’s our record like against them? United don’t have a particularly rich history against Bournemouth, having only met them 13 times before – the first in 1949. But the Reds have the upper hand, with eight wins to Bournemouth’s two and there have been three draws. In Premier League terms, United were beaten 2-1 in the first encounter between the sides, in Dorset in 2015, but are unbeaten in the four subsequent meetings. As a result, the Reds – who kept a first Premier League clean sheet against Bournemouth back in December – will be looking to complete a first double over the Cherries since their promotion to the top flight three years ago.

Who’s the referee? Graham Scott will be in the middle for his third United game overall and of the current season, after taking charge of the reverse fixture against Bournemouth in mid-December and the Reds’ Carabao Cup win over Burton Albion in September. The Oxfordshire whistler will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Harry Lennard, while the fourth official will be Andre Marriner – who was the referee on United’s last visit to Bournemouth 20 months ago.

BOURNEMOUTH 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 2

Wednesday 18 April 2018 | Premier League | The Vitality Stadium | Attendance: TBC | Scorers: Smalling 27, Lukaku 70

Romelu Lukaku's 27th goal for Manchester United and a third strike in as many away games for Chris Smalling gave Jose Mourinho's men maximum points against Bournemouth on Wednesday night.

Despite Bournemouth having won 18 points from losing positions this season, a goal in each half was enough to see off the Cherries without reply, as the Reds reinstated a four-point lead over third-placed Liverpool in the Premier League.

The visitors had a much-changed line-up from Sunday's disappointing home defeat to West Bromwich Albion, with Smalling being the only defender to retain his starting place. In all, Mourinho made seven changes to his side, admitting that some - but not all - were made with Saturday's Emirates FA Cup semi-final in mind.

United’s attack looked threatening from the outset. In just the third minute, a neat interchange between France team-mates Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial left Cherries centre-back Steve Cook needing to make a well-timed sliding challenge to stop Martial delivering a dangerous ball across goal.

Known for their attractive style, Bournemouth tried to take the game to United in the early stages and had a decent chance when left-back Charlie Daniels slid through a pass for Callum Wilson. Wilson picked out Jordon Ibe on the edge of the area, who could only drag his low effort wide.

Lewis Cook then played in Ryan Fraser with a neat pass, but Phil Jones was on hand to make sure any attempt by Fraser was turned behind. Jones was again present to make a clearance from the resulting corner.

A United goal looked like it was on the way and Marcus Rashford provided a warning sign when he forced Asmir Begovic into making his first save of the evening, shortly before the Reds did take the lead.

After a slick one-two passing move with Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard had broken free of any markers and was unchallenged in sending the ball into the six-yard box, where Smalling met it to convert his third goal of the calendar year.

Jose Mourinho’s side were in the ascendancy having established a lead and Martial seemed to be clear and ready to add to it, only for him to be flagged offside by the assistant.

David De Gea was called into action as the minutes ticked down towards half-time. Nathan Ake had surged forward and having been fouled, an advantage saw the ball run to Wilson although De Gea was equal to the Englishman’s effort.

It was another strong start for the Reds as the second period got under way. Martial lost Simon Francis as he checked his own run inside the penalty area and aimed a cross for Rashford waiting at the back post. However, Daniels was on hand to cut it out with a headed clearance.

Shortly before the hour mark, Joshua King charged down the left flank and played the ball across in search of Wilson, who was left demanding a penalty after a challenge by Jones as the pair stretched for the ball. His demands were not rewarded by referee Graham Scott who was quick to dismiss them.

No doubt aware of Bournemouth’s comeback ability, Mourinho decided to bring Lukaku into the fold for the final third of the match, with hope of notching another goal and killing the game off.

United had a penalty appeal at the other end when Lys Mosset was deemed to have fouled Paul Pogba, but referee Scott said it was just outside the area. Up stepped substitute Lukaku with the aim of getting that second goal for his team, but could only drive his free-kick hard into the wall.

Just minutes later, the Belgium striker did double the lead, when Pogba picked him out on the break, leaving him with the sort of one-on-one situation in which he is so deadly.

There were to be no heroics from the Cherries on this occasion, leaving United to take all three points and secure a first-ever league double over Bournemouth following the 1-0 home win back in December.

THE LINE-UPS

Bournemouth: Begovic; Daniels, Ake, S. Cook, Francis (c); Ibe (Mousset 56), Surman (Gosling 75), L. Cook, Fraser; King (Defoe 82); Wilson.

Substitutes: Boruc, Simpson, Arter, Pugh.

Booked: L. Cook, S. Cook, Surman.

United: De Gea (c); Darmian, Smalling, Jones, Shaw; Herrera (Matic 72), Fellaini, Pogba (Blind 80); Lingard (Lukaku 62), Rashford, Martial.

Substitutes: J.Pereira, Bailly, Young, Alexis.

Booked: Smalling 61.

TALKING POINTS

Smalling scores again
The centre-back increased his goal tally for the season to four, by giving United the lead in the first half. It also means he has scored in three consecutive away games, having also scored in the thrilling 3-2 wins over Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

A tight ship
Having conceded just 26 times in 34 Premier League matches, United have a chance of ending the season with the top flight’s best defensive record. With the speed and strength shown by the back line against Bournemouth, it is easy to understand why only the champions Manchester City have let in fewer goals - and that's only one less, having played one game less.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR UNITED?

The Reds will head to Wembley Stadium this Saturday (21 April) to face Tottenham Hotspur with a place in the Emirates FA Cup final at stake. Should United be victorious over Spurs, either Chelsea or Southampton would await in the final on 19 May.
