Manchester United star Juan Mata hoping to build bridges with Jose Mourinho but David de Gea's future remains unclear

* Juan Mata hopeful of resolving his differences with Jose Mourinho
* Spaniard was sold by the incoming Manchester United boss at Chelsea
* David de Gea's future at Old Trafford still remains in the balance
* The goalkeeper has welcomed the appointment of Mourinho at the helm

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata wants to resolve his differences with Jose Mourinho and stay at the club but the new manager may face a struggle to keep goalkeeper David de Gea at Old Trafford.

The future of Spanish playmaker Mata has been unclear since it emerged that Mourinho is set to replace Louis van Gaal.

During his recent spell at Chelsea, Mourinho ostracised Mata from the first-team picture, despite the Spanish midfielder having been voted as the club's player of the season during the previous campaign.

Juan Mata is hopeful of speaking with Jose Mourinho as he closes on the Manchester United job

Chelsea sold Mata to Manchester United in January 2014, as Mourinho discarded the Spaniard from his plans within six months of joining Chelsea. Sources close to Mata, however, insisted that the player does not perceive the situation to be irreparable with Mourinho.

It is understood that Mata is open and keen to hold talks with Mourinho and extend his stay at Old Trafford, where he has become a popular figure in the dressing room and among supporters.

He is also very happy living in the Cheshire suburbs and his father has recently opened a new restaurant in Manchester. He is not actively seeking a move elsewhere but it would also require compromise on the part of Mourinho in order for Mata to remain a central figure at Old Trafford.

Mata is in Manchester this week as he reorganises his summer holiday plans after missing out on a place in Vicente del Bosque's Spain squad for the European Championship this summer.

He intends to return to his hometown of Asturias in Northern Spain and spend several weeks with his family.

Mata, who scored the equaliser in the FA Cup final win against Crystal Palace, is determined to rediscover his best form next term and wants to make a big impression in pre-season.

Meanwhile, Mata's Spanish compatriot De Gea shares the same agent as Mourinho, the Portuguese representative Jorge Mendes, but Sportsmail understands that this will not guarantee the goalkeeper will remain a Manchester United player.

It is, however, true that United's chances of keeping De Gea have been increased by the managerial change.

David de Gea is still unsure over his future at the club but has welcomed Mourinho's appointment

De Gea is significantly more settled at United than this time last year, when he had his heart set on a move to Real Madrid, only for the transfer to fall through on deadline day.

De Gea is much happier in Manchester due to his English being far stronger while his Spanish popstar girlfriend Edurne Garcia has visited the north west of England far more frequently.

He is also one of many who will be relieved by Van Gaal's departure. De Gea's relationship with goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek never truly recovered from the strain of last summer, when Van Gaal relayed an alleged conversation to the media in which De Gea stated to Hoek he did not want to play for the club while transfer negotiations with Real Madrid were ongoing.

De Gea was privately furious about this stunt and denied that he ever refused to play for United.

United's goalkeeping contingency of De Gea, Victor Valdes and Anders Lindegaard were also underwhelmed by Hoek's methods of coaching and were left 'disappointed and underwhelmed' given the Dutchman's reputation as one of the foremost in his field.

However, despite the improvement in De Gea's personal affairs and Mourinho's arrival, there are factors external to United that may also dictate how events play out.

De Gea is driven primarily desire to be at a club that he believes can compete for trophies and while the FA Cup was a welcome medal last weekend, he is concerned that United are not in the Champions League next season.

Real Madrid are maintaining an interest, while also tracking Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois, and De Gea may yet have a major decision to make.

Interestingly, sources in Spain believe that if Real Madrid win the Champions League, United's chances of keeping De Gea will be enhanced as the Spanish club will find it more difficult politically to move on current goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

De Gea's future may also depend on his impact at the European Championship, where it is becoming increasingly likely that he will be Del Bosque's first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Iker Casillas.

If De Gea shines at the Euros, Madrid are expected to make another move for Spain's best goalkeeper.

Sportsmail also understands that the vast majority of United's key players are relieved that Van Gaal is exiting the club.

The United players and staff had a celebration after the FA Cup final on Saturday night and the mood was described by one attendee as 'bittersweet'.

The source added that the mood around the camp was one that suggested United's players were 'bored' by the management regime and 'desperately needed renewed motivation and a change.'

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Jose Mourinho’s failing Manchester United team are already eight points behind the top four… no Champions League again will cost them £40m

* United will lose more than £40million if they fail to make top four
* Champions League qualification was the minimum expected this season
* The £750m adidas kit deal will be cut by 30 per cent if club do not qualify
* Jose Mourinho's side are eight points behind Arsenal
* United have made their worst start to a season in 27 years

The consequences of Manchester United failing to reach next season’s Champions League represent the most significant in history as Jose Mourinho continues to flounder at Old Trafford.

United find themselves not only 11 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea but a worrying eight below fourth-placed Arsenal.

Champions League qualification was the minimum expected of Mourinho this season but United cannot click into gear at home.

Manchester United have once again struggled in the league this season and sit sixth

The basic figure of lost earnings should they not manage it would rocket to almost £40million but in reality will be far higher.

It is now four home draws on the spin in the league, their most troubling run of form since February 1990. This is the club’s worst start to a season for 27 years as well.

And the potential financials next season do not make pretty reading for United should they not qualify for Europe’s premier competition in 2017-18.

Annual profit from the eye-watering £750m adidas kit deal will automatically be cut by 30 per cent, meaning money in from that contract ends £22.5m light.

The adidas contract always stipulated that no Champions League football for two consecutive seasons saw the huge snip.

Quote:
JOSE'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE CONUNDRUM BY NUMBERS

30 — the percentage by which United's £750m kit deal with adidas will be cut by if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, a loss of £22.5m

£28m — the amount the club made from last season's European campaign

4 — All four British clubs that qualify for the group stages are guaranteed a minimum of £11m in prize money

£8m — The amount United have lost in matchday revenue compared to the same point last season

£337.3m — the size of United's debt
Last year’s accounts made interesting reading, with the financial estimates claiming: ‘Management do not expect two consecutive seasons of non-participation in the Champions League.’

He can blame luck all he wants but Mourinho now faces an uphill battle to usurp those occupying the top four spots. There are millions of advantages to qualifying.

Merely participating in the competition is a lucrative business — as happened last year under Louis van Gaal — they did not progress through their group.
United earned circa £28m last year from the run, even though they finished third in the group on only eight points.

The basic prize money for playing games in the group stage is £11m and that does not take into account wins, draws or the share of England's market pool based on how far clubs go in the competition.

Paul Pogba was brought in to help the club achieve Champions League qualification

Quote:
UNITED'S LAST FIVE PREMIER LEAGUE FINISHES

Manchester United have struggled to secure Champions League football since Sir Alex Ferguson left...

------------Points-----Position
2015-16------66---------5th
2014-15------70---------4th
2013-14------64---------7th
2012-13------89---------1st
2011-12------89---------2nd
A lack of Champions League football could also lead United to claiming ‘certain dispensations’ from complying with their earnings rate on a loan with Bank of America standing at more than £100m.

Debt continues to mount at the club — up 18 per cent to £337.7m — and, as ludicrous as this seems, the Glazer family could really do without obvious and sizeable revenue streams cut.

Matchday revenue was up 64.2 per cent this time last year to £24.8m, primarily to do with Champions League football returning to Old Trafford.

As a guide, this season it is back down to £16.8m — blamed on having three fewer games but also because the Europa League does not draw in punters at the same rate.

Empty seats is not a good look for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward but the prospect is thus if Mourinho cannot turn a flailing season around.

How Manchester United could use Antoine Griezmann: Tactical lowdown on where Jose Mourinho might play £85m star after Atletico Madrid move

* Manchester United have made 'concrete' contact over Antoine Griezmann deal
* With Zlatan Ibrahimovic seriously injured, Griezmann looks a direct replacement
* But the Atletico Madrid star's movement and versatility offer several options
* Jose Mourinho is looking to build a United forward line with plenty of pace

Manchester United's interest in Antoine Griezmann has been an open secret for well over 12 months and now has all the hallmarks of their pursuit of Paul Pogba this time last year.

Not a day goes by without someone connected to Atletico Madrid or Griezmann himself commenting on a potential switch. It feels as if Jose Mourinho has nudged a little closer to landing Pogba's international team-mate, whose release clause stands at €100million (£85m).

The persistent talk has United supporters wondering where Griezmann might fit in, should executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward manage to get a deal over the line as he has with others over the last year.

The 26-year-old can play anywhere across the front four positions, off left or right, through the middle or behind the central striker. In fact, he takes up the majority of those positions each time he pulls on an Atletico jersey. A menace, floating into pockets of space where he cannot be marked.

He starts front and centre for Diego Simeone, given the freedom to roam wherever he pleases, and you would imagine a similar role at United - should they land him - even though Mourinho is a little more rigid tactically.

Manchester United are hoping to set up a hotline to Antoine Griezmann's agent. United have made 'concrete' contact over £85m Atletico Madrid forward Griezmann

Zlatan Ibrahimovic's crushing knee injury means pulling on a red shirt again is highly unlikely. Griezmann could effectively become his direct replacement.

Mourinho knows that United have looked more potent flying forward without Ibrahimovic, freeing up the running of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, who could also start as the main striker, as he did in Sunday's win at Burnley, with Griezmann wider.

Those performances are in the mould of what Mourinho wants to see more at Old Trafford, with the shackles loosened and chances to express themselves increased. Fans sing that Mourinho is 'playing the way that United should (oh yeah)' but there is far more to come.

Griezmann would probably be expected to lead a line with runners off him and the added bonus of Rashford - playing him from the left - is that United own a striker operating wide and with the ability to interchange.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also one - alongside Martial and Lingard - who has shown he can run beyond the front man as well.

The possible capture of Griezmann might therefore finally propel United into the same realm as Europe's elite, with four forwards blinding markers with their movement. No fixed positions could well free the aforementioned young United stars up.

All this could be underpinned by the all-round nous of Ander Herrera and the muscularity of Paul Pogba in deep-lying central midfield positions. Juan Mata's goals and creativity are another fine alternative choice in the forward positions when needed.

Griezmann is also renowned for his hard work, which was enhanced by Simeone after a move from Real Sociedad and certainly appeals to Mourinho.

Behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ballon d'Or race, Griezmann is on another level to the chasing pack. A clinical finisher with a knack of arriving just at the right time, he has Ibrahimovic's ability in front of goal but with the ability to give so much more in deeper positions.

That is not to decry Ibrahimovic's achievements this season, which given his age have been nothing short of staggering, but a capture of Griezmann raises the bar further in training at Carrington.

That can only help Rashford, for example, who should be a key component of a new-look United if they manage to secure Griezmann's services.

Sources close to Griezmann told Sportsmail last April that they felt his physique was not then suited to the Premier League. Coupled with 27 goals for club and country this season, Griezmann now looks a more rounded forward.

His heightened upper body strength and ability to bounce off defenders - if he's not skating away from them - means thoughts of a move to England are no longer clouded with concerns of being bullied. He is too good for that. And probably was last year anyway.

How United would line up next season with Griezmann as main striker*:

Griezmann is most likely to be a straight swap for Ibrahimovic up front next season

How United would line up next season with Griezmann in wide role*:

In this formation, Juan Mata comes in at No 10 and Martial up front, with Griezmann wide

* Both formations depend on no further forward or midfield signings

Code:

kabar terakhir sih Griezmann siap mendengar tawaran United. ditambah Ibra yg cedera parah, sepertinya United bakal semakin ngotot mendapatkan Griezmann.

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Where would he fit in?

Most likely on the right of a front three, with Romelu Lukaku through the middle and Anthony Martial on the left in a fearsome-looking attack.

Though he's become increasingly capable with his left foot, Sanchez is more comfortable on his right and his pace and creativity should improve the service to Lukaku.

Playing in front of a more structured midfield than he does at Arsenal, with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic as the holding pair, means Sanchez would need to drop deep less often to get on the ball.

Sanchez is capable of producing a moment of magic out of nothing and could provide the spark United have lacked under Mourinho at times this campaign.

Jose Mourinho's tactics at Manchester United could present a culture shock for Sanchez

How would he get on under Mourinho?

The Chilean's work-rate and hard-running style should make him popular under Mourinho, who loves his players to match his competitiveness on the pitch.

But the United boss will be exasperated if Sanchez reverts to some to some of his more selfish tendencies as he has done at times this year, becoming a disruptive influence in the Emirates dressing room and a poor team-mate.

Mourinho's more pragmatic tactics could be a culture shock to Sanchez, who has enjoyed a largely free role at the Emirates.

He would have to rein in his individualistic style to stay in Mourinho's good books but United look an easier team to break into than Guardiola's table-topping City side.

Would Arsenal prefer to sell him to United?

Depends on what they get back in return.

The thought of the Gunners' best player leaving to join United is the stuff of nightmares for Arsenal fans and would heighten the calls for Arsene Wenger to leave before his contract is up.

Wenger himself would loathe the thought of selling to his bitter rival Mourinho but if he were able to secure a ready-made replacement it might prove the more sensible option.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been discussed as a possible makeweight in the deal and the Armenian is a player Wenger would no doubt fancy getting the best out of.

Mkhitaryan has found life hard under Mourinho but if he recaptured the form he displayed at Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates, the midfielder would represent an impressive return on a player set to leave for nothing at the end of the season.

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

Where will Alexis Sanchez play for Manchester United... and which of Jose Mourinho's men is going to make way for the £350,000-a-week star?

* Alexis Sanchez completed his move to Manchester United on Monday
* Henrikh Mkhitaryan moved in the opposite direction as part of the deal
* The likes of Marcus Rashford and Juan Mata might be worried about his arrival

Alexis Sanchez will be the first name on Jose Mourinho's teamsheet. Manchester United haven't made the Chilean superstar their highest-paid player on £350,000 a week for him to warm the bench.

It begs the question where Sanchez will fit into the United XI and which of his team-mates will miss out to make way for the 29-year-old.

Sportsmail looks at the various options open to Mourinho.

OPTION ONE: WIDE ON THE LEFT

Quote:
SANCHEZ ON LEFT

Rashford – Mata, Pogba – Sanchez

---------------Lukaku------------

Sacrificed: Martial
This is the role Sanchez played a lot of the time with Barcelona and Arsenal and one that he likes. He can cut in onto his favoured right foot and get goals but he's not burdened with the main responsibility for scoring and can also get involved in build-up play.

His first interview as a Manchester United player was instructive. 'I really like to play down the left, through the middle, but to tell you the truth, as long as I'm playing football, I'll fit in anywhere.' The left was his first answer.

His workrate also means whichever right back or wing back United are facing will find it very hard to have an attacking impact which is important in the modern game. Having Sanchez on the left will have pluses and minuses for Mourinho.

The United manager doesn't like playing Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial together — he believes they are too similar — so having Sanchez on the left will give him licence to play Rashford, one of the great young talents in English football whose game time at United has been restricted this season.

But leaving out Martial won't be easy. The 22-year-old Frenchman has been in fine form this season though his ability to press is not on a par with Sanchez. Martial scored United's winner at Burnley on Saturday, his 11th goal of the season and third in four games.

Jose Mourinho is unlikely to leave Anthony Martial out after his recent fine performances

OPTION TWO: NUMBER 10

Quote:
SANCHEZ IN MIDDLE

Lingard – Sanchez – Martial

----------Lukaku---------

Sacrificed: Mata

Sanchez has the trickery and subtlety to supply the bullets for Romelu Lukaku and the tenacity and energy to defend from the front when United don't have the ball.

Though he'll wear the famed No 7 shirt at Old Trafford, performing the glamorous No 10 role will have a particular attraction for Sanchez who spent his time at Barcelona overshadowed by Lionel Messi who was their chief playmaker. In the centre, Sanchez would be continually involved and get on the ball as much as possible, something that is tempting to Mourinho given the financial outlay.

Playing Sanchez centrally would also disrupt United as little as possible. They've lost only three league matches this season and the two wide players Jesse Lingard and Martial have worked well in tandem. Juan Mata would be the player to miss out if Sanchez played behind Lukaku.

The Spaniard is a very popular figure at the club but on the pitch has never quite justified the £38m he cost from Chelsea, whilst performing very well in some matches. Mata has scored 39 goals in 171 appearances for United. Sanchez's strike rate is likely to be significantly higher.

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata could be the man to miss out after Sanchez's arrival

OPTION THREE: TWIN STRIKERS

Quote:
SANCHEZ AS STRIKER

Lingard – Matic, Pogba – Martial

--------Lukaku----Sanchez----

Sacrificed: Mata, Rashford
Despite lying second in the Premier League table, Mourinho has still faced criticism for negative football this season. Even if it's justified to park the bus at Liverpool, United fans expect more adventure against lesser sides.

United have impressively kept five clean sheets in a row but have scored only eight goals in that time against Southampton, Stoke, Everton, Derby and Burnley. Not terrible but not great set alongside what Pep Guardiola is doing at Manchester City.

Therefore pairing Sanchez with Lukaku as twin strikers will have its attraction in certain games where United can expect to control the game. Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic will be tasked with dominating midfield and Sanchez and Lukaku can prioritise finishing off chances.

It'll be interesting to see how Lukaku would respond to having a front partner. The £75m striker has been criticised this season despite scoring a respectable 17 goals. It's been tough for him though when isolated from his team-mates.

Marcus Rashford has played in every Premier League game under Mourinho this season

OPTION FOUR: LONE STRIKER

Quote:
SANCHEZ AS NO 9

Lingard – Pogba, Mata – Martial

-------------Sanchez---------

Sacrificed: Lukaku
Lukaku has already played 36 times this season for club and country. 'The boy is tired. He is physically a monster but he is not a machine,' Mourinho has complained, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined nearly all of this season with a knee injury.

There is no doubt Sanchez can play as a centre forward, or a false nine, in the way Roberto Firmino does for Liverpool. At Arsenal, Arsene Wenger often preferred him to specialist strikers like Olivier Giroud and Sanchez scored 30 goals last season – only Harry Kane and Lukaku got more than his 24 in the Premier League.

'I like him to play through the middle because he makes good runs,' said Wenger. 'And he's a good finisher.'

When Lukaku needs a rest, Sanchez would be a natural replacement. But what is also interesting is whether Sanchez's superior technique and workrate compared to Lukaku means he will get the nod as a lone front man in certain big matches, in the Champions League or the Manchester derby at the Etihad in April for example.

Romelu Lukaku has led the line for Manchester United this season but needs a rest

OPTION FIVE: BACK ON THE RIGHT

Quote:
SANCHEZ ON RIGHT

Sanchez – Pogba, Mata – Martial

--------------Lukaku-----------

Sacrificed: Lingard
Sanchez is right-footed and when he first came to Europe as a 17-year-old flyer for Udinese, it was as a right winger.

Ironically, United's first reported interest in the player came back in 2010 when he'd already done well in Serie A and Sir Alex Ferguson thought he might be a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had played off that flank for United.

The Chilean's career has gone another way and he prefers to cut inside from the left rather than hug the touchline but it will be another option for Mourinho. The big advantage of playing Sanchez on the right is it means he can accommodate Martial who has become an important part of United's current eight-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

dengan datangnya Sanchez & melihat performa Martial dan Lingard yg lagi bagus belakangan ini sepertinya jam bermain Rashford & Mata akan semakin berkurang. paling Rashhford buat gantiin Lukaku kalo lagi buntu mencetak gol. jangan2 kontrak Mata musim depan gak diperpanjang nih

Default Re: Memandang Masa Depan Manchester United

How will £52m Brazilian star Fred fit in at Man United? Can he turbo-charge their sluggish play and will he help get the best out of Paul Pogba?

* Manchester United have agreed the £52m signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred
* The 25-year-old becomes Jose Mourinho's first acquisition of the summer
* Fred will bring dynamism, speed and tenacity to United's midfield
* He will likely play as the link man between Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba
* It is hoped the new signing can help Mourinho finally get the best out of Pogba

Manchester United have wasted little time in making their first signing of the summer, bringing in the Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52million.

Having completed his medical and agreed a five-year deal with the Old Trafford club, Fred is expected to be officially unveiled as a United player at some point soon.

But what type of player is Fred and how is he going to fit into Jose Mourinho's plans next season? Can he help United raise their game above the often sluggish and monotonous performances of last season?

Where does Fred play and what type of player is he?

Asked to describe his manner of playing a couple of years ago, Fred put it rather nicely: 'I am a conductor.'

Well, the United orchestra has been out of tune for some time under Mourinho and they'll hope and pray Fred is the midfield virtuoso that can get them back on song next season.

He is commonly described as a box-to-box midfielder, a dynamic player who offers both defensive and offensive attributes, a disruptor and a creator rolled into one.

Mourinho has signed a versatile asset - Fred was originally a left back before being converted into midfield when he signed for Internacional in his homeland in 2011.

Manchester United have spent £52m signing Brazil midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk. Fred is expected to play a key role for Brazil at the World Cup in Russia this summer

Because he is comfortable on both feet, Fred had been deployed as an attacking midfielder at times during his career before settling into a central or deeper midfield role.

The most important thing for United is that he is quick to spark attacks by carrying the ball from defence and feeding the attacking players.

They have been crying out for something like this for a while - all too often last season United were sluggish breaking forward, allowing opponents to track back and regroup.

Fred's speed of both feet and thought, plus his passing range, should help United be speedier in their transitions from front to back next season.

What are Fred's strengths?

We've already mentioned versatility, speed in transition and passing capability with both feet.

Naturally as a Brazilian, he boasts plenty of technical ability and can beat an opponent on the dribble, while another key attribute is that Fred possesses plenty of stamina to fulfil the box-to-box job.

Mourinho will also be satisfied that Fred can put in a defensive shift if United find themselves under the cosh.

At Shakhtar, he earned the trust of coach Paulo Fonseca, who allowed him to freely perform both the defensive and offensive duties of a midfielder.

It remains to be seen if Mourinho, who often puts the tactical straitjacket on his players, will give him such liberty.

Funnily enough, Fred revealed in 2016 that his role model was compatriot Fernandinho, who will of course play across town at Manchester City next season.

But actually a better comparison might be with Chelsea's N'Golo Kante in terms of that box-to-box stamina, adaptability and dynamism. If he turns out to be a Kante, United fans will be pretty chuffed.

The 25-year-old is usually deployed as a central midfielder, although he has played deeper

And what about his weaknesses?

He only stands 5ft 7in tall, so don't expect Fred to be winning too many headers.

But he more than makes up for that in terms of tenacity - he was Shakhtar's most prolific tackler in the Champions League last season with an average of 2.9 per game (Kante's average was 3.3).

However, United should be wary that this tenacity can sometimes spill over into ill-discipline. He received 14 yellow cards and one red in 29 games for the Ukrainian side last season.

The other concern is that while Fred has played 39 European matches for Shakhtar, the Ukrainian Premier League isn't exactly at the same standard of the Premier League.

United fans may have to be patient while the Brazilian gets up to speed next season, especially as he'll probably be entering the campaign off the back of a lengthy run at the World Cup in Russia.

Fred is very quick and has an excellent passing range, while his stamina is also impressive

How will he fit into a 4-3-3 system at United?

Mourinho went with a 4-3-3 formation in a good number of United's matches last season and this would appear to be the best solution when it comes to accommodating both Fred and Paul Pogba in the midfield.

He would play either in the middle or on the right of the midfield three alongside Nemanja Matic, with Pogba stationed on the left.

Some of Pogba's best performances for United have come from this left-sided station and potentially Fred could offer the answer when it comes to belatedly getting the best out of the Frenchman at United.

The key is in the link-up and transition between the deep-lying Matic and the rampaging Pogba, plus a forward line of Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku further on.

There should be a good balance about United's midfield with Fred aiding Matic in the defensive responsibilities when required and then springing Pogba.

The idea is that the speed of these transitions will give United the thrust going forward they have so often lacked under Mourinho.

How United could line up with Fred in a 4-3-3 formation next season

How will he fit into a 4-2-3-1 system at United?

In certain games, Mourinho will revert to the tried and trusted 4-2-3-1, with Fred likely to sit in alongside Matic in defensive midfield.

This would be a more conservative role, with opportunities to break forward more limited, but Fred is certainly capable of the tactical discipline Mourinho would want with this set-up.

One of the chief criticisms of Pogba - and a reason why the youngster Scott McTominay was drafted in for big games last season - was that he lacked this discipline and would over-complicate things.

Problem is, it's now hard to see how they all could be accommodated in this formation and Pogba could well be seeing more of the United bench.

Reason being that United have so many decent attacking options Pogba wouldn't slot in.

How United could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation next season

Who is going to make way?

In the 4-3-3, the man who looks like he has the most to lose is Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard was drafted in to try to solve the Pogba conundrum but, though his passing is excellent, he struggles in the midfield battle.

Fred has a far greater dynamism in this regard - he's also quicker, more skilful, more tenacious and more attack-minded - so you have to fear for Herrera.

Mind you, given the sheer volume of matches United will have to get through domestically and in the Champions League next season, plus the inevitable injuries and suspensions, Herrera will no doubt still feature at times.

Is Fred the man to get the best out of Pogba?

Having spent two seasons trying to figure out the Pogba equation, Mourinho will certainly hope that is the case.

As explained, Fred should have the attributes to fit in as the link-man between Matic and Pogba, theoretically allowing the £89m man to forget defensive duties and concentrate on aiding United's attack.

It may take a few matches, a few months even, for Fred and Pogba to get used to playing alongside one another. They may well thread on each other's toes at first.

What Mourinho should have here is the ideal man to bring the best out of Pogba in an attacking sense. If that doesn't happen, then United may have to cut their losses.

Who else are United likely to sign?

Mourinho's second signing of the summer looks likely to be the 19-year-old Porto defender Diogo Dalot.

Dalot completed his United medical after they triggered the £17.4m release clause in his contract and the deal should be completed this week.

That may not be the last defensive addition, however, with Mourinho in the market for a top class centre-half such as Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld or Clement Lenglet of Sevilla.

Then there is the tantalising possibility of a megabucks move for Gareth Bale, who couldn't have made it clearer after the Champions League final that he wants to leave Real Madrid.

It would cost United upwards of £85m to sign the Welsh star but he would certainly bring some X-factor to United's forward line if partnered with Lukaku and Sanchez.

lebih suka formasi 4-2-3-1, tapi Pogba mengisi posisi Lingard, Lingard geser ke sayap. jadi Pogba gak terlalu mikirin bertahan, perannya dikasih kayak waktu di Juve, lebih menyerang karena urusan bertahan sudah ada Matic-Fred. apalagi kalo Bale beneran pindah, sayapnya Sanchez-Bale mengapit Lukaku. tinggal beli bek tengah deh duet ama Bailly

Zinedine Zidane 'top of Manchester United's managerial wishlist' should Jose Mourinho leave Old Trafford

* Jose Mourinho has caused concern at United during disastrous pre-season tour
* Mourinho is now the bookies' favourite to be the first top flight manager to leave
* If he does go, reports state that Old Trafford chiefs want Zinedine Zidane next
* Zidane left Real Madrid following a third straight Champions League triumph

Manchester United have put Zinedine Zidane 'at the top of their managerial wishlist' should Jose Mourinho leave the club in the coming months.

Zidane ended his time at Real Madrid days after securing a third straight Champions League triumph, and is currently out of work heading into the new season.

As revealed by Sportsmail this week, Mourinho's black mood is bringing down his players and unsettling staff on a troubled tour of the US - and he has moved into the bookies' favourite to be the first Premier League manager to leave his position.

Jose Mourinho is currently the bookies' favourite to be the first top-flight manager to leave. Mourinho has produced a number of astonishing outbursts during the club's pre-season tour

Manchester United are eyeing up Zinedine Zidane to replace Mourinho should he leave

According to a report in The Sun, should Mourinho leave, United want to bring in Zidane to replace him - and he wouldn't cost them a penny in compensation.

The fact he is currently out of work is a huge boost for the Old Trafford hierarchy, who would be able to skip club negotiations and go straight to the Frenchman.

Mourinho has raised fears that he will not see out his contract at United following a disastrous pre-season tour, in which he has produced a number of astonishing outbursts.

It is understood that his comments about wanting Anthony Martial back in America following the birth of his baby boy caused particular concern among club officials.

'He has the baby and after the baby is born - beautiful baby, full of health, thank God - he should be here and he is not here,' Mourinho said.

United lost 4-1 against rivals Liverpool in front of 101,000 fans in Michigan at the weekend, and immediately after the game, the United boss said: 'The atmosphere was good but if I was them I wouldn't have come.

'I wouldn't have spent my money to watch these two teams. I watched Chelsea versus Inter earlier and people had decided the beach was better. The stadium was empty.

'This is not our team, not our squad. The majority of players that have played are not going to play. Some of them are not even going to belong to the squad. The accumulation of matches is killing progressively my brave boys because I have some brave boys.

'Reinforcements, you are saying players I'd like to buy and add to the squad. That is another thing, but this is not even 30 per cent of my squad, so don't look at this that way.

'We have four or five players that are dead because they care for the club, for the team, they try to give everything, even risking themselves because they don't want to let all the kids play by themselves against AC Milan, Liverpool and Real Madrid. They don't want to do that.'
