U18s: United 0 Sunderland 2

Manchester United’s Under-18s slipped to defeat against a strong and well organised Sunderland team at*the Aon*Training*Complex*on Saturday.

It was a cloudy, but pleasant and fresh morning when the action commenced and the opening exchanges of this early afternoon Barclays Under-18 Premier League clash with Wearside’s finest certainly had a bright and breezy feel to them.

Buoyed by victories in their previous two outings, Paul McGuinness’ side were looking to complete the hat-trick and their early play suggested that the Reds*were in*the mood to achieve that target.

Sunderland, who were kitted out in a smart, all-blue kit, also raced out of the blocks looking more than capable of giving the*hosts plenty to think about.********

All the ingredients for a lively encounter appeared to in place and that’s how it unfolded with neither side assuming command but enjoying enough moments in their opponents’ half to generate encouragement.

Real goal chances were rare in the opening period, but the visitors made the most of one they created when winger Jordan Blinko found the net past United’s George Dorrington in the 24th minute.

The Reds*introduced two substitutes, Callum Gribbin and Zachary Dearnley, at the start of the second half and it was the latter who was presented with a great*opportunity to claim the leveller but his shot, following fine work by Marcus Rashford, flew wide of the upright.

Sunderland, who had been enjoying a positive spell, doubled their lead in the 66th minute. Dorrington’s kick up field failed to find the intended destination and came to ground at the feet of Sunderland’s Ethan Robson. The Black Cats’ youngster took full advantage of his fortune and launched an unstoppable shot to give his side a two-goal cushion.

Not surprisingly, Sunderland’s second*strike gave their confidence a huge boost and United had to dig deep in an attempt to salvage something from the contest.

Joe Riley raised hopes in the closing stages with two shots on target that required attention from Black Cats’ keeper James Talbot*but*the visitors held firm thereafter.

United:*Dorrington; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, J.Thompson (McTominay 81), Redmond, Rathbone (Dearnley 46); Rashford, Croskery (Gribbin 46). Sub not used: Henderson (GK).

Loughborough 0 United Youth XI 2

A Manchester United Youth XI defeated Loughborough*Students 2-0 with goals by Sean Goss and Ashley Fletcher.

Paul McGuinness fielded an Under-19 line-up that included Goss, Fletcher and Matty Willock in addition to his Academy squad in a match played in memory of the home team's former coach Mike 'Doc' Holliday.

The*game was only eight minutes old when the hosts lost possession deep inside their own half and Marcus Rashford's intelligent backheel allowed Goss to fire a superb shot past Jack Howard and in off the far post. Rashford and Fletcher were convinced a penalty should have been awarded when they tried to reach a cross by Tyler Reid but Loughborough hit back and Dean Henderson was*close to being*embarrassed when his clearance struck Alun Webb and trickled wide.

After Rashford almost danced through on his own, Devonte Redmond spurned a glorious chance when scooping over from close range. Joe Riley was also off target from a promising position*while Rashford was unlucky with a diving header from a Riley centre that flashed wide.

Willock started the second half brightly as the*game opened up and, after*firing wide, he curled a shot past Howard only to see it bounce back off the bar. United turned up the heat on a blustery night and, after Rashford was unable to finish off a devastating run by Riley, the no.9 capitalised on a mistake by Josh Dickens to release Fletcher*and the target man finished clinically past the advancing Howard.

The Students responded with an incisive move that should have led to a goal by the lively Webb, but he snatched at the opportunity,*before Jack Poxton tested substitute goalkeeper George Dorrington.*United assumed total control but could not add a third goal during a dominant spell that contained some attractive football.

Fletcher was unable to profit from a poor Howard clearance, the keeper atoning by holding the venomous shot, Redmond drilled wide after slicing through the home defence and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson's mishit cross dropped the wrong side of the far post.

At the other end, Poxon attempted a drive that deflected wide of a stranded Dorrington but came back off an upright while Fletcher*was twice unable to convert decent openings*as the chances continued to come thick and fast. Rashford spun Luke Trotman to race clear but*supplied a disappointing finish from an ever-decreasing angle.

Rashford latched onto a Riley through ball but was again unable to add a third goal as he fluffed his shot with the Reds unable to match the 6-2 goalfest of two years ago*and yet*were*still good value for the victory, even allowing for the fact Ben Ward-Cochrane's last-minute effort was ruled out for offside.*

United: Henderson (Dorrington 46); Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Goss, Willock, Redmond; Rashford, Fletcher. Subs not used: Thompson, McTominay, Croskery.

Under-18s: United 2 Newcastle 0

Marcus Rashford scored both goals as Manchester United defeated Newcastle United 2-0 in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League.

The talented forward, back after international duty with the England Under-18s, struck six minutes before the end of both halves to clinch a double over the North-East outfit.

The Reds started well in torrential rain with recent recruit Timothy Fosu-Mensah going close with a wonderful long-range attempt but the Magpies weathered the storm and had a good opening of their own when Adam Laidler landed a shot on top of the net on 17 minutes.

Sean Longstaff also hammered off target for the visitors but they were undone by a moment of magic six minutes before half-time. Rashford collected the ball on the left from Joe Riley, cut inside and unleashed a swerving shot that totally foxed Paul Woolston and skipped past his despairing dive.

Paul McGuinness' side went for the kill but Jamie Cobain cleared a dangerous centre by Rashford from inside the six-yard box and the goalscorer then went solo with a purposeful run and was thwarted by Woolston's block at his near post.

Riley bent wide after a dubious free-kick was awarded, possibly because the referee felt a throw-in did not get a touch when it was miscontrolled by a defender. After the break, Fosu-Mensah spurned a clear chance when the ball bounced up awkwardly from a Callum Gribbin pass and he skied his finish.

Zachary Dearnley produced a tame shot after a marvellous run and, soon afterwards, survived a penalty shout after a tangle with Mackenzie Heaney as the outcome remained in the balance. Tyler Reid was forced to clear off the line from Cobain after Dean Henderson misjudged a corner but United also pressed with Devonte Redmond twice unlucky.

The midfielder saw a drive deflect off target and then had a drive charged down by Laidler following a powerful run by Fosu-Mensah that caused problems in the Tynesiders' box.

Henderson recovered well to save from Longstaff after initially losing the ball and that proved the final scare as Rashford put the game beyond doubt with his second strike in the 84th minute. Fosu-Mensah was fouled outside the area and Rashford swept a low free-kick wide of Woolston to claim his brace. *

Newcastle had a couple of late chances to halve the deficit but Henderson was able to retain his clean sheet on a rain-sodden surface at Altrincham's J. Davidson Stadium.

United: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Fosu-Mensah, Redmond, Gribbin, Dearnley (Scott 69); Rashford. Subs not used: Byrne, Warren, Rathbone, Johnson.

05/12/2014 - ManUtd.com, Nathan Thomas
U18s: United 0 Liverpool 0

Manchester United played out a goalless but entertaining draw with Liverpool in the Barclays Under-18 Premier League on Friday night.

With the historic rivalry between the clubs providing an intriguing sub-plot, both teams were evidently keen to take the spoils, but ultimately had to settle for a point apiece. The first half proved to be a cagey affair with neither side causing the other too many problems. The best chance of the opening exchanges undoubtedly fell to the visitors, but Kristof Polgar fluffed his lines when he prodded wide from close range. Callum Gribbin - fresh from scoring in United Under-18s' last game at Bolton - looked bright for Paul McGuinness' team, but could not find a way past the Liverpool rearguard.

With little to choose between the two outfits, an increase in tempo was required and it was to be the Merseysiders who raised it at the start of the second period. Coming out of the traps in determined fashion, Liverpool went close on two occasions before the 50-minute mark with the impressive Sergi Canos at the heart of both moves. The better of the two chances came when the visitors' no. 7 flashed the ball across the six-yard box following excellent wing play, but nobody was on hand for what would have been a tap-in.

Stung into action by Liverpool’s lively start to the second half, United began to attack with more urgency and created a number of presentable opportunities. The aforementioned Gribbin was first to spurn a great chance as he directed his effort straight at shot-stopper Andy Firth, before Zac Dearnley latched on to an excellent threaded pass by Joe Riley only to be denied by Firth once again. Charlie Scott was next to go close when the effervescent Gribbin threaded the eye of a needle to find him, but the Stoke-born midfielder could only direct his effort wide. Both sides continued to press forward and Liverpool substitute Ovie Ejaria peppered the United goal with a number of efforts, but none were good enough to beat Dean Henderson. The in-form Marcus Rashford could have bagged a late winner but fired his shot off target as a tenacious second half came to an end.

United:*Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Fosu-Mensah, Borthwick-Jackson; Scott, Redmond; Riley, Gribbin, Dearnley (Hamilton, 67), Rashford. Subs not used: Warren, Byrne, Rathbone, Johnson.

Manchester United's Under-18s are through to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bury at a rain-soaked Old Trafford.

Zach Dearnley's 12th-minute strike proved enough to see off a spirited Shakers side, for whom goalkeeper Jack Ruddy played brilliantly to keep the result in doubt right until the final whistle.

The home side's intent was evident from the offset as the lightning-quick Marcus Rashford used his raw pace to split the Bury defence and earn a free-kick for the Reds. Although that particular set-piece came to nothing, United were not to be deterred and continued to cause problems for the visitors' back-line.

The aforementioned Rashford proved a persistent handful for the Shakers’ defensive duo of Marcus Poscha and Matthew Foulds and had the game's first chance of note when, with three minutes on the clock, the Mancunian forward's prodded effort was cleared off the line by Foulds. The Reds' no. 9 went close again soon after, but could only find the side netting with a stinging drive.

Thankfully, United's early pressure soon paid dividends when captain Axel Tuanzebe turned well to feed Fosu-Mensah. The combative midfielder then proceeded to thread a measured through-ball to find Dearnley who arced a pristine drive past Ruddy in the 12th minute.

It was a deserved lead, but building on it proved to be difficult. Encouraged by the Reds' profligacy, the visitors began to exert some influence on the proceedings. Fortunately, United - led by the assured Tuanzebe - snuffed out any meaningful threat Bury might have mustered and held on to take the one-goal advantage into the break.

The opening exchanges of the second period were cagier with fewer chances created for either side. Rashford headed over with the first effort after half-time and Callum Gribbin went close with a delightful curled effort that clipped the bar, but other than those close calls, the Bury defence stood firm.

It was only really after the hour mark that the game buzzed into life once again. With new-found urgency, the visitors began to throw men forward with more confidence and a flurry of corners saw Foulds go close with an improvised half-volley, before Sam Gibson's close-range header cleared the bar.

With the game now wide open, Joe Riley and Devonte Redmond both broke through for one-on-ones with Ruddy but couldn't convert their chances. Riley also tried his hand from further out but his curled attempt was well saved by the Bury shot-stopper.

A string of late substitutions from both sides served only to take the sting out of the game as the Reds comfortably saw out the final exchanges to secure safe passage to a home fourth-round tie against Hull City in the new year.

United: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Fosu-Mensah, Redmond; Riley, Gribbin (Scott), Dearnley (Rathbone 83); Rashford. Subs not used: Dorrington, Hamilton, Warren,
