Default Re: [UCL] Barcelona vs Manchester United

Forget 1999, Manchester United must use PSG as inspiration to defeat Barcelona in the Champions League, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Manchester United head to the Nou Camp knowing they must beat Barcelona
* Barca beat United 1-0 at Old Trafford in Champions League quarter-final first leg
* United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants a comeback akin to their PSG victory

There will be no room for nostalgia when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goes back to the Nou Camp for Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final meeting with Barcelona.

No point in dwelling on the 1999 final and his winner against Bayern Munich aside from the inevitable questions that will accompany his return to the scene of Manchester United's greatest triumph.

No reason for Solskjaer to talk to his players about the club's historic Treble achievement.

'No, I won't because it was against Bayern Munich, it was a final and it was different,' he said. 'We will use the Paris Saint-Germain match and Juventus away. We have beaten some good teams away from home this year and played against some great players.

'What we did against PSG must give everyone a huge confidence boost because that experience was probably the best those players have had for many years. They are probably dreaming about another at the Nou Camp.'

Solskjaer has a point. Far better to focus on his team's victories in Paris and Turin this season as they attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Barca than make comparisons with Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

United went to the Nou Camp 20 years ago having just clinched the Premier League title and lifted the FA Cup.

Solskjaer's side fly to Spain on Monday facing elimination from Europe, are out of the FA Cup and locked in a battle to finish in third or fourth after winning two of their last six games in all competitions. Even then, there was a strong element of good fortune about the victories over Watford and this one against West Ham.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs another Manchester United comeback in Europe. He wants them to channel the spirit of their PSG fightback when they meet Barcelona

United benefited from a poor offside decision that chalked off an early effort from Felipe Anderson and a dodgy penalty converted by Paul Pogba after Robert Snodgrass challenged Juan Mata.

Pogba scored from the spot again in the 80th minute but only after Anderson had equalised and substitute Michail Antonio hit the bar, then forced a fabulous save from David de Gea. Solskjaer had the good grace to admit United were second best, but it does not augur well for the Barcelona second leg.

While the runaway Spanish league leaders could afford to rest Lionel Messi and be without another five regulars for their goalless draw against Huesca, Solskjaer's rotation was limited to keeping Scott McTominay and Victor Lindelof on the bench and Marcus Rashford sitting alongside them for 55 minutes.

Nemanja Matic will travel with the squad after missing the last three games through illness but Solskjaer didn't see anything here to change his Nou Camp gameplan. 'It doesn't really give me too many headaches,' he said. 'I rested a few to be ready for Tuesday, but we have a decent plan. I hope it's decent. It's a plan anyway.

'We had Barcelona flustered at times. Yes, they controlled the game towards the end and had the possession, but they never really bothered us in our own half.'

Manuel Pellegrini has enough experience of Spanish football from his time as coach of Real Madrid, Malaga and Villarreal to know how big a task United face.

Barcelona have not lost at home in Europe in the six years since he moved to the Premier League.

'It will be a difficult game,' smiled West Ham's boss. 'I hope United can continue because we are here in England. I hope they have a good result, but it's not easy.'

'I know it's Barcelona, we're playing in their home, but it's never closed': Paul Pogba eyes historic European night as Manchester United head to Catalonia

* Paul Pogba feels Manchester United can turn around their fortunes in Barcelona
* Barca lead the tie by a 1-0 away goal after winning the first leg at Old Trafford
* Pogba helped save United's blushes on Saturday by scoring two penalties
* The Frenchman has also heaped praise on the impressive David de Gea in goal

Paul Pogba is confident Manchester United can turn around their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, despite riding their luck against West Ham.

Two decades on from sealing the treble at the Nou Camp, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will attempt to secure another memorable win at Barca's home this Tuesday.

United suffered a 1-0 first-leg loss to the Spanish league champions but picked themselves up with a victory on Saturday, although United were sloppy and more than a little fortunate to overcome the Hammers.

Pogba's brace from the spot sealed a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford and the World Cup winner is now looking to cause a shock in Catalonia.

'I think it's a really important three points,' the midfielder said.

'We know about that. We wanted to do obviously better and score more goals, but we get the result that maybe we deserve.

'Now what we have to think about the next one, the next game, get some rest and get focused on Barcelona.

Paul Pogba is confident Manchester UnitPaul Pogba is confident Manchester United can turn around theired can turn around their fortunes in Barcelona

'That's why we play football, to play against those teams, to play those games. A Champions League quarter-final is just beautiful. We just have to enjoy it, give our best and trust ourselves.'

United face an uphill battle at the Nou Camp but Barca certainly looked beatable in the first leg.

Solskjaer's side have also proven their mettle when the chips are down, having made Champions League history in the previous round against Paris St Germain by becoming the first team to progress after a first-leg home loss by two or more goals.

'The game is not done, it's not closed,' Pogba said.

'I know it's Barcelona, we're playing in their home, but it's never closed. It's still 90 minutes.

'The first half is gone, now it's the second half.'

Pogba missed that remarkable return leg at the Parc des Princes through suspension and will be looking to make his mark after a welcome return to form on Saturday.

One of few players to emerge from the West Ham match with any credit, the 26-year-old took his goal tally for the season to 16 with a pair of spot-kicks that saw him move away from his favoured stuttered run-up.

'Yeah, I can still go back to the old one!' Pogba told MUTV with a laugh.

'I just changed it because I think the keepers, they know how I shoot penalties and I just changed it to make a little difference.

'The most important thing is that the ball goes in and the victory, the three points.'

Pogba struck the killer blow just moments after David De Gea produced his latest moment of magic. Guilty of giving away possession in the build-up to Felipe Anderson's goal, the United goalkeeper more than made amends with an outstanding stop to claw away Michail Antonio's header.

'David is David,' Pogba said.

'We know about this. This is not something incredible. We're used to it. And hopefully we're going to keep being used to saves like that.

'I told him 'this is normal for you, so I don't congratulate you, I just don't say anything, it's normal'.

'He's a top-class goalkeeper and this save showed it again. We're really lucky that we have him.'

Luck certainly was not on West Ham's side on Saturday evening, with Anderson seeing a goal wrongly ruled out for offside early in a match that the visitors dominated for large patches.

Versatile Arthur Masuaku said: 'We played really well, everyone is frustrated about this game and I don't even know how we lost this game. We should have won.

'I think everyone is happy about the performance and we need to take the positives and move onto the next one.'

Default Re: [UCL] Barcelona vs Manchester United

Comeback king Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returns to his hallowed turf as he looks to inspire his Manchester United players to overcome the odds against Barcelona at the Nou Camp

* Manchester United play against Barcelona in Champions League on Tuesday
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have a mountain to climb being one goal behind
* Solskjaer scored a famous winner at Nou Camp in 1999 Champions League final
* He hopes that moment will prove to his players that the odds can be overcome

This might be an opportune moment to remember that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s famous Champions League winner at the Nou Camp in 1999 isn’t actually his most precious goal for Manchester United.

Those came some years later, against Newcastle in 2006, when he scored twice in front of his young son Noah at Old Trafford after briefly recovering from career-threatening knee problems.

In the week that Tiger Woods staged another of sport’s great comebacks watched by his two children at Augusta, it’s easy to see what made those goals so special for Solskjaer.

‘I was walking off the pitch and there was my son Noah with his fists clenched,’ he told Sportsmail in 2011. ‘He was six and he would remember daddy scoring at Old Trafford. That was one of the biggest things to drive me on because he was only three when I got injured.

‘My dad used to be a greco-roman wrestler and he was Norwegian champion six years on the bounce from 1966 to 1971. But I never saw him wrestle. I’ve only read the clippings. My motivation was that Noah wouldn’t just read about me, he would remember me.’

In the 20 years since he walked off the pitch with a Champions League winner’s medal hanging around his neck after that injury-time winner in the final against Bayern Munich, Solskjaer has never set foot on the Nou Camp’s hallowed turf.

He returned here in 2016 with his youngest son Elijah to watch El Clasico against Real Madrid — ‘high up in the stands’ as he recalled last night — and with his assistant Mike Phelan 10 days ago to scout this evening’s opponents Barcelona.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to mastermind another Manchester United comeback. Solskjaer's United play against Barcelona 1-0 down on aggregate after first leg

Solskjaer and the Nou Camp have remained frozen in time; an outstretched leg to divert Teddy Sheringham’s flick-on from David Beckham’s corner past Oliver Kahn. Bedlam on the United bench. Peter Schmeichel’s cartwheel. Football, bloody hell.

Solskjaer reappeared here last night with his hair significantly greyer but otherwise largely unchanged at the age of 46. Now manager of Manchester United, he must try to conjure up another miracle.

He was reminded of the story of him phoning a friend at home in Norway in ’99 to tell him to tune into the final because he knew something special was going to happen.

So does he still believe in fate?

‘Sometimes people say it has to be our year because it was 20 years ago, I used to play with the No20 and we’re back at the Nou Camp,’ he replied. ‘But we have to deserve it. We can’t just rely on fate, no.’

Still, being back here stirs many emotions.

‘It’s a fantastic memory for me,’ he added. ‘The last time I was on the pitch was the only time. I’ve been in the stands, brought my son to a clasico in 2016, high up in the stands and I was here 10 days ago.

‘But I don’t look back on that night too often. I’m focused on tomorrow and a better performance. We need to play better — that’s my job now.’

What a job it is as well. United are a goal down to a Barcelona team that haven’t lost at home in Europe for six years.

Indeed, Liverpool were the only Premier League club to win at the Nou Camp in 23 attempts going back to February 2007 and the night of Craig Bellamy’s infamous golf swing celebration.

Against such esteemed opponents, United will need to surpass their win over Paris Saint-Germain in the last round when they overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg.

‘Of course, that memory from PSG will help the players and us as a team,’ said Solskjaer. ‘We know we can turn things around.

‘Barca at the Nou Camp is a different prospect but that night will live with the players.

‘It’s not that long ago and we’re one goal better off.’

Nemanja Matic could play for the first time in three games after illness, and Alexis Sanchez has travelled after recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out for the last six weeks.

Sanchez is likely to be on the bench and Solskjaer hopes the former Barcelona star can produce against his old club to make up for a poor season if he gets on.

‘Alexis has been here and played, and when he’s on the pitch he wants to prove a point for us as well,’ said the United manager.

‘He’s been injured and not had a fantastic season so far. Let’s hope he can end the season great.’

When it comes to making an impact off the bench at the Nou Camp, no-one knows better than Solskjaer.

'Manchester United have something special in the last minutes of games.' Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde admits he is wary of the spirit of 1999 ahead of second leg clash

* Ernesto Valverde insisted he is worried about Manchester United's team spirit
* United summoned a dramatic turnaround to win the Champions League in 1999
* They've also scored late winners this season at Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain
* Valverde said: 'We are very wary of the spirit that they have. This tie is not over'
* Barcelona hold a slender one-goal lead over United ahead of Tuesday's clash

Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde says he is wary of the spirit of 1999 as his team takes a 1-0 lead over Manchester United into Tuesday night's second leg at the Nou Camp.

Valverde referenced United's famous comeback from 1-0 down in the Champions League final 20 years ago against Bayern Munich when asked if he planned to start with recently fit-again Ousmane Dembele or use him from the bench.

'Those that start the game will be important but so will those that finish it,' said Valverde. 'Manchester United have something special in the last minutes of games. They have shown it this season and they won a European Cup here showing it.

We are very wary of the spirit that they have. In this Champions League they have done well away from home winning three out of four games. They have beaten Juventus and Paris Saint Germain in the last minutes so we will have to be at our best.

'I think the only away game they have not won so far was away to Valencia so the tie is still open.'

There was a caveat to Valverde's talk of past United glory at the Camp Nou. He added: 'We all draw from old experiences. You try to repeat those great nights. But you have to write your own history. You can't live from what has happened before. We know that and I'm sure they do too.'

Ernesto Valverde has admitted he is wary of Manchester United's ability to score late goals. Valverde said: 'We're very wary of their spirit. They've done well away from home in Europe'. Barca boss insisted the tie is not over and that he shares Solskjaer's anger at quick turnaround

Valverde will make a late decision on starting with France winger Dembele or former Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho but hinted he would leave the former Dortmund winger on the bench.

He said: 'Dembele is fit. He played 70 minutes the other day, which was what we had planned. He is available to play but maybe not for 90 minutes.'

Asked if he felt Barcelona would be torn between playing their normal open game or trying to close the match up knowing that Manchester United will have to come out and attack them he said: 'We have scored a goal away from home but we can't sit on that.

'We will be true to our style but we are also aware of what they have in attack and the game can't become you attack us, we attack you.

'We don't want them to score but our game plan as always will be to try to score, anything else would be absurd.'

Valverde backed his opposite number Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's complaints about the lack of time between games. He said: 'I understand his complaint because it's absurd that four teams have eight days to recover and four teams have six days. It seems logical to me that you play the first leg on a Wednesday then the second leg is on a Wednesday.'

Valverde declared Lionel Messi fully fit after his weekend rest. The Barcelona coach left out his entire first team in the 0-0 draw with Huesca. He said: 'With just six days between games I knew I had to do something. The previous result against Atletico Madrid [a 2-0 win that all but sowed up the title] allowed us to do that.'

Asked about Messi's long run without a goal in the Champions League quarter-finals [five years] , Valverde added: 'That just means he is closer to scoring in this one.'

Man United send spotters to Barcelona as 4,500 fans head for Spain amid fears of fans 'brutality' suffered by Chelsea supporters last season

* Manchester United demand new security measures for fans at the Nou Camp
* It comes after Chelsea complained about 'brutality' towards their fans last year
* Footage appeared to show Blues fans being baton-charged by security staff
* The Red Devils will face Barcelona on Tuesday night in the Champions League

Manchester United have asked for a number of measures to be put in place for their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona at the Nou Camp after Chelsea complained of ‘brutality’ towards their fans by Spanish stewards last season.

The number of search lanes at the famous venue has been significantly increased to avoid congestion before the game on Tuesday night, and there will be more observers from United, the FA and UEFA to look out for any potential flashpoints.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust issued a statement, saying: ‘Following the accusations of improper conduct and alleged unprovoked attacks on fans of other English clubs by Barcelona stewards, MUST has worked with the club to try and ensure our fans have a better experience.

Manchester United have demanded new security measures for their fans at the Nou Camp. Chelsea fans were baton-charged by security guards as they left the Nou Camp last season

‘Recent communication and planning helped ensure our trips to cities such as Seville, Paris and Turin – where other English fans had been subjected to bad treatment – passed more favourably.

‘MUST gathered information from other English supporter groups as well as other European fan groups. These were passed to United in advance of their visit to Barcelona and have resulted in better planning.

‘Outcomes include 25 search lanes for our fans instead of the usual five. These will be monitored by increased numbers of observers from United, the FA and UEFA.

'Similarly United are sending out a much larger staff contingent to handle the ticket collection too, given the larger than normal away end.

‘However, we would still encourage supporters to arrive earlier than you may usually do, given the numerous stories of problems accessing the stadium and several instances where Barcelona appear to have changed the agreed plans and access routes on the day.

‘We are also conscious that the large away allocation may mean that some travelling supporters may not have previous experience of policing and security that is very different from away matches in England. Please look out for your fellow supporters and help each other.’

Default Re: [UCL] Barcelona vs Manchester United

Barcelona are beatable but luck won't be enough when Manchester United face the Catalan side at the Nou Camp in the Champions League

* Manchester United need to pull off another miracle to make the semi-finals
* Barcelona beat United 1-0 in the first leg and have that crucial away goal
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants his players to take inspiration from their PSG win
* However after 2-1 win over West Ham, United need more than luck at Nou Camp

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said recently that he has been thinking hard about some of the team talks delivered in the past by Sir Alex Ferguson.

As a reference point for management in the Champions League, it’s not a bad place to start.

Talking about great United glories of which he was part, Solskjaer told ESPN: ‘I ask myself, “What did we do to get there? What kind of master team talks did he have?” There was a pattern to what he said.’

Few of Ferguson’s skills exceed his motivational gifts and few can ever hope to emulate his longevity in that department.

When Ferguson’s team flew to Barcelona for what would be their greatest triumph 20 years ago next month, it was a journey taken by Concorde and even Roy Keane was impressed.

‘He was always looking for an edge,’ said Keane.

What Ferguson also had back then was a team of great players. It is only when we look back at that triumph now that we truly realise that.

Solskjaer is not blessed with this, and that is what makes Tuesday’s attempt to reach a first Champions League semi-final in eight years so daunting.

Manchester United need to pull off another miracle to make the Champions League semi-finals. Solskjaer wants his players to take inspiration from their brilliant comeback victory over PSG

The new United manager said after an unconvincing 2-1 win against West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday that his side must not take inspiration from what happened two decades ago, but instead from what happened in winning at PSG in the previous round in March.

But what he needs more than any of that is a much better performance. Much was said post-Paris about the quality of United’s play in their 3-1 win.

The more prosaic truth is that the victory in no way reflected the nature of the game, and if United do not improve on that on Tuesday they will go out.

On Tuesday, United face a talented Barcelona team but the Spanish league-leaders are not unbreakable.

Solskjaer’s team could and should have scored against them in losing 1-0 at Old Trafford.

In the Nou Camp United must take what chances come their way and they simply must defend better than at any time this season.

Solskjaer will take a hammer to this squad in the summer as he tries to erase the missteps of those who came before him.

From that point of view, Tuesday represents yet another free hit. Fortune will not see United through once again, though.

Another miracle will only arrive if it has the best performance of Solskjaer’s time in charge at its very heart.

Barca memang bukan PSG, tapi berjuang dulu 2x45 menit sampai peluit akhir berbunyi #GGMU
