CRYSTAL PALACE V UNITED: SIX TALKING POINTS

Manchester United begin a busy month by returning to Premier League action on Monday against Crystal Palace in the first game in March.

The Reds will make the trip to Selhurst Park in buoyant mood after coming from behind to beat top-four rivals Chelsea last time out. There is plenty to discuss before the game and we've picked out six key points for you to mull over…

WHO COULD PLAY FOR UNITED?
With eight days in between our superb comeback victory over the Blues last Sunday and the meeting with Palace, Jose Mourinho and his players have had the luxury of a free week to rest up and prepare for the game. As midfielders Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini continue their respective recoveries from injury, it remains to be seen whether Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be back to full fitness in time to be involved on Monday. Scott McTominay hopes to keep his place in midfield after an impressive February, and Eric Bailly is pushing for his first start since November in defence. The boss could give a further update on his plans and the squad in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

FOSU-MENSAH IS INELIGIBLE
After signing a new deal at United last season, Tim Fosu-Mensah joined Palace on a season-long loan in search of regular first-team football to further enhance his education. In the absence of the injured Joel Ward, the Dutchman has established himself as the Eagles’ first-choice right-back this season and has been one of their most consistent performers in their resurgent campaign. He played at centre-back in the 1-0 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in their last league outing, but is ineligible to face United due to the terms of his loan deal – which is undoubtedly a blow for Palace.

NO REUNION WITH ZAHA
Another player with United connections – Wilfried Zaha – is also set to miss out for the Eagles. The speedy winger became the final player to join United under Sir Alex Ferguson's stewardship in January 2013 but remained on loan at Palace for the rest of the 2012/13 campaign. After struggling to make an impact the following season during David Moyes' reign at Old Trafford, he returned to Selhurst Park in the summer of 2014 - initially on loan. The 25-year-old is one of a number of first-team players currently unavailable to Palace boss Roy Hodgson, who has had to contend with something of an injury crisis of late.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

It promises to be a long weekend for United fans as the Reds are last on stage for the next round of Premier League fixtures. It's the third time this season we will play on a Monday, after victories over Everton (on New Year’s Day) and Stoke City last month. In fact, United boast the best Premier League record on this particular day of the week – winning 41 of our 60 previous Monday matches in the top flight.

LONG TRIP FOR REDS FAITHFUL
The scheduling of this game won't have gone down well with many supporters as the Reds make the near 300-mile round trip to south-east London on a Monday evening, which may result in a late night for most. Although travelling to and from the capital is likely to be problematic, particularly in the snowy conditions which have hit the country, the timing of the match should at least make for a cracking atmosphere under the lights at Selhurst Park – aided by the loyal support of the travelling Red Army.

25 YEARS ON FROM A LANDMARK WIN
This season marks a quarter of a century since the 2-0 victory away at Palace – secured by a spectacular volley from Mark Hughes and a Paul Ince effort – on 21 April 1993 took the Reds to the brink of a first league title in 26 years. The mood in the away end at Selhurst Park became even more celebratory as United fans learned that title-race rivals Aston Villa were on course for a costly 3-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers. Eleven days later, Villa lost 3-0 again - this time at home to relegation-battling Oldham Athletic - and United were crowned champions without having to kick another ball. The season ended with us 10 points clear at the top.

MATCH PREVIEW: CRYSTAL PALACE V UNITED

Setting the scene… The Reds are back on the road for the fourth time in the last five games on Monday night, making the trip to the capital to face a Crystal Palace side fighting for Premier League survival. Coming off the back of an impressive win over Chelsea at Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s men will be keen to build momentum against the struggling Eagles ahead of a crucial run of challenging home games. A win would take the Reds beyond the 60-point mark, while boosting our chances of finishing second in the table.

How can I follow it? Monday night’s match kicks off at 20:00 GMT and will be broadcast live in the UK on Sky Sports. MUTV subscribers on Sky or Virgin Media, the MUTV app, or online at MUTV.com can enjoy match build-up from 18:00 GMT on the Match Day show and listen to radio commentary of the game before watching it in full at midnight. You can keep up with all the action as it happens via ManUtd.com's live match blog and by following the official Twitter account @ManUtd.

What's the team news? The trip to Selhurst Park is likely to come too soon for Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to recover from injury. It remains to be seen whether defenders Phil Jones, Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo will be fit enough to return. The boss could give an update on his squad in his press conference on Friday. Meanwhile, Palace will be without defender Tim Fosu-Mensah, who is on loan from United and therefore ineligible to face his parent club. Former Reds winger Wilfried Zaha is also on a lengthy list of absentees, which includes Scott Dann, Mamadou Sakho, Jason Puncheon and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Boss Roy Hodgson told the media on Thursday that Martin Kelly and Jeffrey Schlupp are the only two players likely to return from injury on Monday.

How are Crystal Palace doing? A dreadful start to the season saw the Eagles break a 129-year Football League record, losing their first seven matches without scoring a single goal. After taking over from Frank de Boer, who lasted just four games in charge, former England manager Hodgson has managed to steer Palace away from the bottom three. The Eagles were as high as 12th in mid-January but have slipped down the table again on the back of a five-match winless run. The south-London outfit currently sit 17th, with only goal difference keeping them above the relegation zone, but they could fall into it if results over the weekend go against them.

How have we fared against Palace in the past? The Reds have a commanding record against Monday’s opponents, having won 35 and drawn 10 of the 52 matches between the sides. United have never lost to Palace in 17 previous games in the Premier League era, while the last of the Eagles’ seven victories over the Reds in all competitions came in a 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford in the League Cup in November 2011. United fans will fondly remember beating Crystal Palace in the 2016 FA Cup final – as the Reds came from behind to win 2-1 at Wembley, thanks to Jesse Lingard’s stunning strike in extra time, and lifted the famous trophy for the first time since 2004.

What happened earlier in the season?
United welcomed Palace to the Theatre of Dreams at the end of September in the reverse fixture and eased past the beleaguered Eagles, who were struggling at the foot of the table. The Reds produced an attacking performance as Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini (2) and Romelu Lukaku got on the scoresheet in a convincing 4-0 victory.

What's our record like against Roy Hodgson? The Reds have come up against sides managed by the experienced 70-year-old on 13 previous occasions, spanning 20 years, and boast an impressive record. As manager of Fulham, Hodgson came out on top in two of his three encounters with United at Craven Cottage between 2008 and 2010. But, since then, he’s failed to avoid defeat against the Reds at Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion.

One to watch: Serbian international midfielder Luka Milivojevic has become a favourite among Palace fans since arriving in January 2017 and was voted the club's Player of the Month for February. He is Palace’s current leading scorer with seven goals to his name this season, popping up with several important strikes – particularly from the penalty spot. Before the visit of Tottenham last time out, the 26-year-old had scored in four of the previous six games and, if they are to threaten on Monday night, Palace will need their own ‘Beast from the East’ to perform at his best.

Who's the referee? Neil Swarbrick will take charge of his third United game this season, having already officiated the Reds’ 2-2 draw at Stoke City in September and the 1-0 win over Brighton at Old Trafford in November. The experienced whistler from Preston will be supported by assistant-referees Scott Ledger and Richard West, while Lee Mason takes on the role of fourth official.

JOSE'S PRESS CONFERENCE: PALACE V UNITED

Jose Mourinho addressed the media on Friday afternoon ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Monday night.

The boss discussed a range of topics from the form of Scott McTominay to where the Reds can finish in the Premier League.

Read the main points from his press conference below...

HOW THE SNOW HAS AFFECTED PREPARATIONS
“Yesterday, [we trained] indoor and today, outside but [it has been] difficult. We tried, we worked. The atmosphere is positive and we can't complain because it's over. So, for the rest of the day, they [the players] can be at home.”

SCOTLAND OR ENGLAND FOR MCTOMINAY?
“My advice to him is not about national teams - it's not about that. My advice to him is to keep the way he is - very humble, very open to learn, intelligent and keep going in the same direction and the same profile, trying to fight to have minutes with Manchester United which is not easy. Then the national team will just be a consequence of his work at the club. But I can't confirm at all that both national teams [England and Scotland] have contacted him because I don't know.”

SCOTT IS STAYING GROUNDED
“I think the people around him are the right people. I have never met them but I have to believe that the kid with his attitude towards the others and towards football, the parents must be really good people that pass to him the right values. The kid is keeping his feet on the ground and is very calm. I think he passed some important tests - not from the football point of view but more from the mental point of view, with his maturity, calm, playing against the champions and knockout football in the Champions League. Two tests by the mental approach. So, I think there is a long way to go, obviously, but his feet are very much on the ground, very stable and I just hope he can keep the same direction.”

WE WILL FIGHT FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE FINISH
“First of all, the gap is a very short gap - six points between the second and the fifth teams is really short and really open for everybody. But all four are in the Champions League still, so we have other focuses and targets all of us. I have to say all of us are very good teams - in spite of some times the way I read, it looks like all the others are better than us. But I'm not so sure that is the reality. I would say four very good teams and one will be out of the Champions League. If you ask me second or fourth, I say by the financial point of view it doesn't make a difference, by the prestige point of view, it doesn't make a difference - you go to the Champions League and even the fourth team doesn't have to even play a last qualification match. But, from the personal point of view, second is better than third and third is better than fourth. So, we are going to try the best possible finish. Of course, the top four is very difficult and, at the moment, that's the main target for us. But, if you can finish third, we are not going to finish fourth. If you can finish second, we are not going to finish third.”

Monday Night Special: Roy Hodgson and Jose Mourinho preview Crystal Palace vs Manchester United

* Manchester United can return to second with a win over Crystal Palace
* The hosts needs three points to bolster their Premier League survival hopes
* Jose Mourinho has praised Marcus Rashford ahead of the Selhurst Park clash

Ahead of Monday's Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Selhurst Park, managers Roy Hodgson and Jose Mourinho speak to Sportsmail to preview the game.

ROY HODGSON speaking to Kieran Gill

Alexis Sanchez scored twice here in December. Does he pose the same threat now?

We are going to be playing against a very good player and if we give him a lot of time and space, and if we give him a lot of opportunities to do the things he is good at, he is likely to succeed.

He is a very good player. I can’t make any comparisons about his style at Manchester United and his style at Arsenal. You’d have to ask Jose what he thinks about his adaptation to life in Manchester but we know he’s a very good player. Unfortunately for us he’s one of many good players that Manchester United possess so life for us could perhaps have been a bit easier if he was their only good player but he is far from that.

Are United still working out how to get the best from him?

I don’t follow them that closely. What I see of Manchester United is Match of the Day and you know from Match of the Day there is as much talking and analysis as what you see from the excerpts that are edited from the game.

I’m not in a good position to make a comment on that. What I will say is I repeat that we know he’s a very good player, we know he can score goals. He has been doing that on a regular basis. We know he can create goals. We know he is a busy, hard-working player who is not going to give up easily.

Can a packed Selhurst Park on a Monday night intimidate United?

If it is going to be buzzing, and give us the real Palace support that the fans are more than capable of giving us, then we’ve got to try to give them something to buzz about. My hope would be to see the place rocking because that would mean we would be buzzing around the Man United penalty area a few times, as that’s what gets the fans going.

What’s the secret to finding form at this stage of the season?

The secret is accepting you have no alternatives. There is no alternative but to keep your nerve and to remain as calm as you can. And certainly to never lose sight of the fact that the team will only survive if they are good enough, work hard enough and do well enough.

JOSE MOURINHO speaking to Chris Wheeler

Was the last hour against Chelsea the benchmark for United?

We have very good matches and we have very good periods of matches. It’s a quality to know how to play against teams who at certain moments are better than you.

I always say to my players, even in matches where we are dominant and we are the best team, there will always be a period where the opponents react and are better than you. You have to know how to play in these moments. We go [to City], to do the maximum we can to get a good result.

Has Marcus Rashford progressed as much as you expected?

At his age, what he’s doing is more than enough, and the experience he’s getting at every level is more than enough for us to be happy with what we think is going to be his future. We love him and we believe in him, and he’s going to have chances.

Do you have to reassure him?

I don't reassure anyone. The main reassurance for him is he is always selected. You sometimes put in doubt if he is going to be selected for the World Cup. It’s up to Gareth Southgate. If he trusts him, he selects him. It doesn’t matter if he plays for Manchester United.

Can Rashford step in for Lukaku when Zlatan Ibrahimovic goes?

Unfortunately, Zlatan this season has not been an option. The good thing with Marcus is he can play in the three attacking positions. He’s a fantastic option for us.
