West Ham Women 2-4 Manchester United Women: Alessia Russo double and a fine strike from US import Tobin Heath helps Casey Stoney's side continue unbeaten start to the season

* Manchester United Women beat West Ham 4-2 in the WSL to stay unbeaten
* Alessia Russo scored twice while Tobin Heath and Christen Press were on target
* Emily van Egmond and Rachel Daly scored to reduce the deficit for home side

Socks around her shins, hugging the right touchline, Tobin Heath looks like a throwback to English football as it was in the 1970s, not one of this league’s new American glitterati.

The focus on the game’s US arrivals has been disproportionate to their contribution so far. Sam Mewis hasn’t set the world alight at Manchester City, where Rose Lavelle has barely played. Alex Morgan won’t appear for at least two weeks at Tottenham, citing a ‘small setback’ on Sunday.

But Heath delivered the first performance commensurate with all the talk, revealing in the process that opponents will need to be a great deal better prepared for her than this.

Tobin Heath was influential as Manchester United Women beat West Ham 4-2 on Sunday

Alessia Russo was on target twice as Casey Stoney's stayed unbeaten in the WSL this season

Bigger clubs alone might have the resources to attract such players, though there could be no excuse for the time and space the 32-year-old was given to dominate and win the game for Manchester United, who are still unbeaten and one of the division’s new forces.

She was free to assess the options as Katie Zelem arrived to take her pass and loop the ball which Leah Galton laid back for Alessia Russo to score an opener. There was similar hospitality as Heath took a short ball from Russo and powered a shot beyond Mackenzie Arnold three minutes later.

It helped Casey Stoney’s side that West Ham were determined to play out from the back on every occasion, despite lacking a capacity to pass consistently under pressure. Manna from heaven for Zelem, the influential midfield technician.

United, like Chelsea, have a capacity to mix it up and also go long. There’s also an excellent attacking balance about them, with centre forward Russo capitalising on the width that Heath and Galton provide from the right and left flanks. A throwback to how United’s men’s team used to play.

Russo, of Italian decent, is the one Phil Neville and his England successor Sarina Wiegman have cause to be excited about. Bringing others into play, linking with Heath and scoring United’s technically excellent third with a run across goal to meet Galton’s cross with a strong header — the 21-year-old looks a ready-made successor to Ellen White in the international ranks.

She also sought refuge from the US chaos this summer, moving to the UK six months ahead of schedule having planned to complete her studies at the University of North Carolina while playing for North Carolina Tar Heels.

‘We’ve been looking at her for a long time,’ Stoney said last night. ‘Her availability was one of the very, very few plus sides to what’s going on all around.’

United’s defence, plagued by injuries, can be punctured, as West Ham proved. Emily van Egmond beat Amy Turner to a cross to bring things to 2-1. Rachel Daly, her side’s most dangerous threat, arced a cross-shot from the right which looped over Mary Earps for 3-2.

But the Americans ran things. It was exhibition football at times from Heath, running the ball under her studs, flicking it over her head with her heel and driving at Laura Vetterlein. Heath’s World Cup team-mate Christen Press arrived from the bench on 76 minutes and rapidly netted United’s fourth — a fine volley from Lucy Staniforth’s free-kick.

The USA international scored her side's second goal with a fine right-footed strike

The new stars have impacted on a number of levels. After Heath and Press arrived, United sold six times more women’s team-related merchandise than their previous monthly record.

But Stoney is more concerned about Arsenal, who annihilated Tottenham yesterday and who will provide a more accurate barometer in two weeks’ time of whether United can claim a top-three spot this season.

‘It’s going to be a very big test for us,’ Stoney reflected. ‘They’re an exceptional team.’

It helped Casey Stoney's side that West Ham were determined to play out from the back on every occasion, despite lacking a capacity to pass consistently under pressure. The same one-track mind which did for Phil Neville's England at last summer's World Cup. Manna from heaven for Zelem, the highly influential midfield technician.

Christen Press was introduced for the final 15 minutes and volleyed home to make it four

Manchester United go top of the Women’s Super League for the FIRST time in their two-and-a-half year history after beating Arsenal

* Man Utd went top of the WSL for the first time in their two-and-a-half year history
* They've had the financial muscle to bring in players who have made a difference
* United usually look to Heath and Russo but the inspiration came from elsewhere
* Ella Toone scored a winner late on against Arsenal to put United top of the table

The weather was biblical, the football attritional and the stakes too high for much self-expression but the outcome was hugely significant. Manchester United went to the top of the Women’s Super League for the first time in their two-and-a-half year history on Sunday, so confirming their arrival among the division’s elite.

They’ve had the financial muscle to bring in players who make a difference – Tobin Heath and Alessia Russo, whose surgery on a thigh injury announced just before this game seemed like a potentially pivotal loss. But the players who turned this match were among the 21 Casey Stoney assembled in four weeks, two summers ago, as United finally invested in a women’s team.

Jess Sigsworth had spent most of her career at Doncaster and might not have anticipated a part among the talents Stoney has assembled, though it was she, arriving from the bench, who began to unlock space before crossing for Ella Toone whose finish under pressure was technically impeccable.

Casey Stoney's Man United side have gone top of the Women’s Super League for the first time

Toone was a youth player at United for six years from 2007 and left because of the lack of a senior women’s team before Stoney brought her back. Proof, if ever it were needed, of how much United lost in those years of myopia about women’s football.

Toone’s relatively small stature has left some wondering if she would make it. ‘She’s never been the biggest. Physically, she struggled in games,’ Stoney reflected last night. But United’s coaches challenged to work on her physique during the lockdown and the evidence of that showed on Sunday. ‘She’s very coachable and open minded,’ the manager said. ‘She got strong, came back and gave me no choice [but to pick her.’]

Jess Sigsworth (left) played an important role providing the assist for Manchester United

While Ella Toone provided United with the historic winner to see them go top of the table

It was a work ethic that United needed with the intense press they set out to apply on an Arsenal side who had accelerated to the top of the table, with 29 goals in five matches since September. United’s challenges were titanic at times. Amy and Millie Turner, also members of that original 21, were all in the vanguard and above all Jackie Groenen.

Arsenal were faster and more fluid when they briefly broke out, with the pace and incessant menace of Vivianne Miedema provides, but did not train their sights on goal until late in the game.

They were also fortunate to carry 11 players through the match, considering Lotte Wubben-Moy should have been dismissed for a dangerous first half challenge on Leah Galton. ‘I couldn’t believe it,’ Stoney said of the yellow card issued. ‘It looked high. It looked reckless. It looked dangerous. There should have been more severe punishment.’

There was equally brutal honesty at the end of it all from Arsenal manager Joe Montemurro, disgruntled by the failure to deal with United’s high intensity pressing. ‘If you not able to pass from A to B you are going to have difficulties’ he said.

Leah Williamson (left) also brought the ball deep into United territory throughout the game

But it was not a calamitous Arsenal performance. His defensive unit were impressive, with Leah Williamson bringing the ball deep into United territory. Arsenal stunted Heath - isolated and unable to shape the course of the game beyond a cross that her compatriot Christen Press swivelled around to send a shot just over the bar.

As Arsenal forced United back and the rigours of the press began to tell late on, you sensed it the game would end as it did in the last close affair between these sides, when Montemurro’s team took the spoils last season. But substitutes Sigworth and Katie Zelem were critical to the renewed momentum of a different, more self-confident United.

The changing of the guard at the top of the division means Saturday lunchtime’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Academy assumes even greater significance. ‘It’s only our third season so to be up there [at the top] is positive for us,’ said Stoney, trying to play things down. ‘But by going up there you put a target on your back.’

'They are completely unacceptable': Casey Stoney hits out at disgraced ex-FA chairman Greg Clarke over outdated remarks as Man United Women head coach calls for a 'more progressive' replacement

* Man United Women head coach Casey Stoney has hit out at Greg Clarke
* The former FA chairman resigned from his role after controversial comments
* Clarke referred to black players as 'coloured' among other outdated remarks
* Stoney hopes the successor is progressive and advocates for inclusivity

Casey Stoney has hit out at former FA chairman Greg Clarke over the 'completely unacceptable' remarks that led to the chief's resignation from the authority earlier this week.

Clarke, 63, stepped down from his role on Tuesday after a disastrous select committee session, in which he used the word 'coloured' when referring to black players, while also suggesting that the lack of goalkeepers in women's football was due to girls not liking the ball being kicked at them.

Manchester United Women head coach Stoney is hopeful that the successor to Clarke's position will strive to engineer change at the organisation in order to develop a progressive culture of inclusivity and diversity in football.

Man United Women head coach Casey Stoney has slammed former FA chief Greg Clarke. Clarke resigned on Tuesday after making controversial remarks in a select committee hearing

'It just shows how much work we've still go to do,' the former England defender said. 'They are completely unacceptable. I think it was the right thing to stand down.

'It's extremely disappointing when the person at the top of that chain is making those comments and making them so flippantly and easily. It's extremely disappointing.

'Hopefully, you have to see this as an opportunity for positive change now. I think this is a really good opportunity for that.'

Since Clarke's resignation, there have been calls for a BAME candidate to take over as FA chairman. Sportsmail have revealed that former Aston Villa and Celtic defender Paul Elliott has strong support from within the FA to take on the role.

Stoney said Clarke's comments were 'completely unacceptable' as she bemoaned his remarks. The Red Devils boss hopes the next chairman is a strong advocate of inclusivity and diversity

Casey insists that the person appointed must be the right person for the job and be a strong advocate for inclusivity and diversity across the game.

'Whether it's a BAME candidate, whether it's a female, it has to be the right person for the job, that can really take the FA forward and be more progressive, more inclusive, more diverse,' Casey added.

'Hopefully that includes the board too in terms of making positive change there because I don't think it is diverse enough at the moment to represent society and represent the game that brings people together.'
