Dealing with pressure is something that appears to come naturally to unflappable Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.

In June 2015, he was faced with an intensity that must have been new to him as he stepped forward to take a penalty in the European Under-21 Championship final shoot-out with Portugal, the country where he plied his trade with Benfica.

Abdul Khalili had missed Sweden's previous attempt at the Eden Arena in Prague and Joao Mario's conversion tied the scores at 3-3. Calmness personified, the defender beat Jose Sa and William Carvalho's failure from 12 yards ensured the Swedes could enjoy a notable first international triumph.

Lindelof had only been introduced to the squad as a late call-up but performed with distinction at right-back, earning a place in UEFA's Team of the Tournament. It helped provide added impetus to his club career as he forced his way into the senior Benfica side and enjoyed experience in the domestic top flight and Champions League.

Patience has been important for the Scandinavian, who burst into Vasteras' first team when only 16 years old. He helped his local side gain promotion but left when Benfica came calling in 2012. The Lisbon giants had seen his potential in Sweden's Under-16s and Under-17s and made their move.

Still only 17, Lindelof understandably had to wait for an opportunity and cut his teeth with the B team, going on to make 40 appearances in the Portuguese second tier and spending his first season there as a right-back. A move into a more central position confirmed his growing maturity as he was able to impress at centre-half and also in a holding midfield role.

A loan move to Middlesbrough was discussed last year but he instead became a valuable member of the Benfica defence and successfully fought for his place. Speaking with confidence, he had declared an intent to oust his older, more experienced colleagues and so it proved as he emerged as one of Europe's most promising young defenders.

International recognition with Sweden's senior team has naturally followed and, after starting all three games at Euro 2016, he scored his first goal at that level against Bulgaria in October 2016. Although his primary focus is defending, he also grabbed an important equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Sporting Lisbon in April with a wonderful free-kick past Rui Patricio.

Winning trophies has become something of a habit for the Swedish stopper as he has three Portuguese league titles to his name, in addition to two Portuguese Cups, one League Cup and one Super Cup. This is without mentioning that European Under-21 Championship medal, of course.

Lindelof, approaching his 23rd birthday, appears ready to take this next big step in his career. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had identified his fellow countryman as an emerging leader last Christmas, telling reporters: "He is growing and has a lot of responsibility with the national team now."

And there is plenty to admire about the Sweden team at present. The 2-1 victory over France, at the scene of United's Europa League success against Ajax in Stockholm, took Janne Andersson's side to the top of Group A in the World Cup qualifiers. As the Netherlands are back in third place, it is a measure of the progress being made by the Scandinavian country and the prospect of a real upset in terms of clinching an automatic spot in Russia next year cannot be dismissed.

For now, the composed centre-back will be focusing on adapting to life at United after signing a four-year deal with the option of a further year, to start on 1 July. In 2016, Jose Mourinho's first summer signing was also a defender with much promise in Eric Bailly. If Lindelof can enjoy a debut campaign as successful as the Ivory Coast international's first year in Manchester, everybody will be delighted.

Manchester United are still keen on £38million man Victor Lindelof as FIFA look into cash row between Benfica and defender's old club in Sweden

* Manchester United are considering a £38million-move for Victor Lindelof
* Swedish defender is centre of a clash between Benfica and old club Vasteras
* FIFA are investigating row over a €250,000 payment for European appearances
* However, argument over add-on would not affect Old Trafford move

The £38million move Manchester United are considering for Victor Lindelof will not be stopped by a transfer dispute between Benfica and his first club.

The 22–year-old central defender is a major target for United in the January window and talks are on-going.

However, current employers Benfica and tiny Swedish third tier outfit Vasteras, where Lindelof started his career, are at odds over his 2011 £60,000 move to Portugal — with Fifa investigating.

The row concerns an add-on clause in the deal which stipulated that Benfica hand over 8250,000 after Lindelof made 10 first-team starts in the Primeira Liga and Champions League — which he accomplished in April.

Benfica have reportedly refused to pay, prompting Vasteras to complain to Fifa.

The contract under question also includes a sell-on clause which is thought to promise the tiny club 20 per cent of any subsequent move.

Manchester United are considering a £38million-bid for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof

Should that happen, Vasteras would net around £7.6m, instantly transforming their finances.

However, the lawyer representing Vasteras, who are situated in a small city around 60 miles west of Stockholm, has told Sportsmail that the wrangle will not hold up Lindelof’s potential transfer.

‘The case with Fifa does not concern the sell-on clause,’ Lars Nilsson said. ‘I don’t think it will hold anything up. It would be strange as it (the row) is based on another term. I would be very surprised if it made a difference.’

Nilsson says Benfica have not yet responded to Fifa.

‘I think they have until January 10 to do so,’ he added. ‘Hopefully Santa Claus brings them some sense at Christmas.’

The financial implications of the move for Vasteras, whose home stadium holds 7,000, are not lost on Nilsson.

‘Maybe the transfer to Manchester, should it happen, will allow Benfica to honour the sell-on clause and fulfil their obligations.

‘If they get that money they very much will have the capacity to pay us.’

Lindelof made his debut for his hometown club at 16 and now has 11 caps for his country. His Sweden team-mate, United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, believes his compatriot can be a success at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic said: ‘He is growing. He has a lot of responsibility with the national team now.

Current United star Ibrahimovic has backed Lindelof (far left) to be a hit at Old Trafford

‘Is he good enough for United? I think he is ready for the big clubs out there. It is up to him what he wants and what the situation says. Whatever he chooses, it will be good for him. I know he is hot on the market, so let him make the right choice for him.’

A delegation from Benfica travelled to England on Monday to discuss a potential transfer. Benfica coach Rui Vitoria said: ‘If there are exits we will find solutions.’

Meanwhile, Antonio Valencia has opened discussions about a contract extension at United. The 31-year-old’s current deal runs out in 2018.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho calls off move to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof

* Manchester United held talks with Benfica delegation about move for defender
* However, Red Devils have now scrapped their interest in Victor Lindelof
* Manager Jose Mourinho is content with his current options at centre back

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Benfica’s £38million-rated defender Victor Lindelof after manager Jose Mourinho decided against signing a new centre-back in the January transfer window.

United have been tracking the 22-year-old Sweden international for some time, and a delegation from Benfica flew over to England last week for talks set up by super agent Jorge Mendes.

But although reports in the Portuguese media claim a deal is close, it’s understood that no bid has been made and Mourinho is happy with the central defensive options he has for the remainder of the season.

Manchester United have called off a move for Benfica's £38m-rated defender Victor Lindelof. Lindelof has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford and talks had been set up

The United boss has been impressed by the partnership of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo in the absence of Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly, who are both available again after injury.

Bailly will depart for the Africa Cup of Nations in January but Daley Blind gives Mourinho another option in that position, and he has decided not to pursue his interest in Lindelof.

There are suspicions that Benfica have been hawking the Swede around the transfer market in the hope of finding a buyer because they have a ready-made replacement in teenager Ruben Dias. Otherwise the Portuguese club will have to offer Lindelof a new contract with a significant pay rise.

It would not be the first time that Benfica have ramped up interest in their players. Nicolas Gaitan was persistently linked with a move to United despite little encouragement from Old Trafford, and Louis van Gaal is thought have pulled the plug on a move for Renato Sanches some time before he joined Bayern Munich from Benfica in the summer.

Mourinho will only add to his squad next month if players go out, and Everton are expected to step up their pursuit of Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay next week. Schneiderlin is already the subject of an £18m bid from West Bromwich Albion.

However, United will reject any offers for Anthony Martial to go out on loan despite claims from the United winger’s agent that they are seriously considering the possibility of a short-term move to Sevilla next month.

Martial has grown frustrated at his lack of first-team football under Mourinho after an excellent first season at Old Trafford, and his representative Philippe Lamboley said: ‘We are studying the Sevilla option in detail.

‘Sevilla are a very good club, are in a good position in La Liga, play in the Champions League and have a great coach. That’s all I can tell you.’ West Ham have also enquired about taking Martial on loan, but Mourinho wants the 21-year-old French winger to work harder to win back his place.

West Ham also lodged enquiries about the availability of Marouane Fellaini and Marcus Rashford.

begitu tau United naksir, klub memberikan perpanjangan kontrak & menaikkan buy out clause, strategi buat menaikkan harga. lagian duet Jones-Rojo dah lumayan padu, ditambah Smalling yg dah sembuh. cedera Bailly & kalo harus berlaga di piala Afrika bisa ditutupi dengan Darmian/Blind. jadi posisi bek tengah gak urgent2 amat IMO

Manchester United set to sign Benfica defender Victor Lindelof in £35m deal
Manchester United have been long-term admirers of defender Victor Lindelof

* The Benfica star has been scouted for months and is now set for Old Trafford
* Portuguese paper Record claim United will sign Lindelof in deal worth £35m
* Jose Mourinho will pay just over £30m up-front, with almost £5m in bonuses

Manchester United will finally land Benfica defender Victor Lindelof this summer in a deal worth up to £35million, according to reports in Portugal.

Newspaper Record claim that the Sweden international will put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Old Trafford after terms between the clubs were agreed.

United will pay just over £30m up front for Lindelof, with almost £5m in bonuses if he achieves certain targets.

The report comes just a day after Portuguese daily O Jogo revealed that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira had travelled to England to negotiate the sales of Lindelof and his team-mate Nelson Semedo.

The 23-year-old defender has been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Newcastle, although Jose Mourinho is also said to be interested.

According to O Jogo, Vieira believes he could receive as much as £83m from United if he is able to agree a double deal for the pair this summer.

The news of Lindelof's move - which is worth up to £35million - features on Record's front page

United have been keen on Lindelof since January, but a move was scuppered partly due to a payment owed to his former club Vasteras.

The 25-year-old signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier this year, although that will not prove an issue with Mourinho determined to bolster his defensive options before the start of next season.

United scouts have watched Lindelof multiple times this term, including in Benfica's 4-0 victory over Belenenses in mid-March.

Jose Mourinho refuses to rule out a move for Benfica's Victor Lindelof as Manchester United gear up for busy summer transfer window

* Manchester United are exploring a £35million deal for Victor Lindelof
* United boss Jose Mourinho is currently on holiday in Portugal but was asked about the Benfica stopper
* Mourinho was coy about the 22-year-old and said he wouldn't be commenting
* United have also drawn up a number of replacements for David de Gea

Jose Mourinho has refused to rule out a move for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof as Manchester United prepare to begin their summer transfer business.

United were exploring a £35million deal for Lindelof in January, and it’s understood that Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes met with Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira last week at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester where the United boss stays.

Mourinho is currently on holiday in Portugal but was asked about Lindelof after giving a lecture at a university on the outskirts of Lisbon.

A smiling Mourinho was coy about the 22-year-old Sweden centre back, insisting that it would be disrespectful to Benfica coach Rui Vitoria to discuss his player in public.

He said: ‘I will not say if I want him or not, I think it’s incorrect.

‘Rui is not going to be happy with another club manager talking about a player who is his, and the president would not be happy to see that.

‘Lindelof is theirs and as long as he’s theirs, he’s theirs.’

Manchester United are interested in Benfica's £35million central defender Victor Lindelof. Jose Mourinho has refused to comment on a possible move for Lindelof

Meanwhile, United have drawn up a list of replacements for David de Gea if the Spain goalkeeper signs for Real Madrid this summer.

Real are expected to make their move after winning the Champions League at the weekend, and it’s understood that United would consider selling De Gea at a premium price.

The shortlist of targets is thought to include AC Milan keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Inter’s Samir Handanovic and, possibly, Joe Hart.

United, who will sell Sam Johnstone this summer, are also admirers of Atletico Madrid No.1 Jan Oblak. However, the transfer ban that hindered their pursuit of Atletico forward Antoine Griezmann is likely to rule out any move for Oblak as well.

Any negotiations for De Gea could involve Madrid striker Alvaro Morata who is a leading candidate to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Old Trafford.

The 24-year-old former Juventus striker is valued at £50m – substantially less than Everton’s Romelu Lukaku – and has been linked with a return to Italy with AC Milan.

Mourinho reiterated that he has tried to step back after a long season and is leaving the club’s transfer negotiations to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

‘I got fed up and tired of football before the last day,’ he said. ‘I promised that they would not see me in football stadiums, and I stopped negotiating for players and being worried.

‘I gave my list to the CEO in April and he has until August 31 to give me what I want or not.’

Beri Lindelof Sedikit Waktu untuk Memulai Kebintangannya di MU
Rifqi Ardita Widianto - detikSport

Manchester United have completed the signing of Victor Lindelof from Benfica after the defender passed a medical.

Lindelof, who has cost United £30.7million, arrived at the club's Carrington training base on Wednesday morning before signing a four-year contract.

The 22-year-old has long been a target of manager Jose Mourinho, who decided against a move for the player in January.

The Sweden international has revealed his joy at moving to Old Trafford, wher he will stay until the summer of 2021.

It is also understood that Benfica could be due a further £8.8m in add-ons.

In an interview on the club's official website, he said: 'I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United.

'I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there.

'But I'm looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho.

'I'm keen to get started and make my contribution to the team's efforts to win more trophies.'

He will get his chance to play with his new team-mates in the summer when United go on their tour of the US.

Mourinho believes Lindelof will add depth to his defensive line for next season, with the side competing in the Champions League.

VICTOR LINDELOF - INSIDE TRACK

Portuguese football expert Goncalo Lopes has given Sportsmail the inside track on the man heading for Old Trafford.

GL: Victor Lindelof likes to play ball, as we say here in Portugal. He's not the kind of centre-back that only has a defending role. He likes to have the ball at his feet, and to venture into midfield, but with caution.

He's very 'German' and has the nickname 'Iceman' because of the way he plays. Very tough, with a strong mentality, never loses his concentration - even under pressure - and with a high percentage on aerial duels. Also excellent are his tackling and passing skills. Perfect for the kind of game he'll face in the Premier League.

He has played three positions here in Benfica, from the youth teams to the first team: right-back, centre-back and also in the midfield. It was in this last position that he started his career in Vasteras, his first club in Sweden.

His idol was Steven Gerrard, but, for the United fans we can compare him to Rio Ferdinand. Here in Portugal he always mentioned Luisao, his team-mate, as his role model, because when he started to play centre-back, in the youth teams, Luisao was the captain and the boss of this Benfica team.

Lindelof likes to venture forward and Eric Bailly could cover this if they are paired together. In the aerial game, this partnership has everything to win most duels, they are both very good at this. Something else that Mourinho has always liked.
'Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United,' added Mourinho.

'Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer.

'I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.'

Centre back Lindelof has long been a target of the Europa League champions. Lindelof is similar in style to Rio Ferdinand and will be a good partner for Eric Bailly

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VICTOR LINDELOF

Victor Lindelof has become Manchester United's first summer recruit after moving to Old Trafford for a fee understood to be 35million euros (£30.75million).

The Sweden centre-back, known as 'The Iceman' in Portugal, made a name for himself at Benfica but remains a largely unknown quantity ahead of the new Premier League season.

Here, Press Association Sport identifies five things you need to know about the 22-year-old.

HE'S A LATE BLOOMER

It is almost seven years since Lindelof made his senior debut but he has only just passed the 100-top-level-appearances mark. He broke through at Vasteras - more on them later - in his homeland and was soon snapped up by Portuguese giants Benfica, who largely left him in their 'B' team until promoting him for the 2015-16 campaign. He has not looked back since, commanding a starting role in the Benfica back-line and helping the Lisbon club win a league and cup double last season.

ZLATAN RATES HIM

Lindelof arrives in Manchester backed for greatness by his fellow Swede Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer. In November the prolific striker told the Manchester Evening News: "I think Victor is doing great things, he is playing good for Benfica, he gets a lot of responsibility for the national team now, he is growing. Is he good enough for United? I think he's good enough for the big clubs out there. It's up to him what he wants and what the situation says."

VASTERAS TO CASH IN

Vasteras, managed by former Celtic defender Johan Mjallby, are currently languishing in the Swedish third tier. But the windfall they should receive from Lindelof's sale to United will certainly boost the coffers ahead of a stab at promotion. The boy born in the city on Lake Malaren was sold to Benfica for just 60,000 euros, yet Vasteras will now bank around 4.1m euros in sell-on fees. A squabble between Vasteras and Benfica reportedly stymied his development, but now all parties can profit.

ACCOMPLISHED ON THE WORLD STAGE

Lindelof scored the fifth penalty in a shootout victory over Portugal in the final of the European Under-21 Championship and - with that medal in his cabinet - he is pushing for silverware with the senior Sweden squad. The Scandinavians top a World Cup qualifying group containing France and Holland thanks to a dynamic young team marshalled in defence by Lindelof and propelled forward by another rising Swedish star, Emil Forsberg of RB Leipzig. His experiences at United will only aid his quest.

SMORGAS-BORO?

While Lindelof was lost in the wilderness at Benfica, with a first-team future at the Estadio da Luz looking less than likely, he underwent a trial at Stoke. The Potters did not want to sign him for a reported £260,000 fee and so he tried his luck at Championship club Middlesbrough, who were understood to have been keen to tie up a £5million deal for the physically-imposing teenager. The deal fell through, but Boro can take comfort from the fact United have had to pay six times more.

United complete signing of Victor Lindelof

Manchester United is delighted to announce the signing of Victor Lindelof from Benfica on a four-year contract from 1 July 2017, with an option for a further year.

The 22-year-old Swedish international centre-back is a versatile defender and will make his debut on the summer tour of the USA in July.

Jose Mourinho said:"Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United. Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer. I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us."

Victor Lindelof said:
"I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there. But I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I’m keen to get started and make my contribution to the team’s efforts to win more trophies."
