'He's a different man off the pitch': Nemanja Matic claims Manchester United players hide from Jose Mourinho at training if they lose

* Nemanja Matic says Manchester United stars avoid Jose Mourinho after defeat
* The Serbian midfielder also described his under-fire manager as a 'great person'
* United won at Bournemouth on Saturday to make it two wins on the spin
* Matic insisted that everyone at Old Trafford is pulling in the same direction

Nemanja Matic has claimed that Manchester United's stars hide from Jose Mourinho at training after a defeat.

Marcus Rashford's late winner at Bournemouth over the weekend made it two wins on the spin for Mourinho's side, but question marks still remain after a difficult opening to the campaign.

And Matic, who followed the Portuguese from Chelsea to Old Trafford, has revealed that he and his team-mates avoid Mourinho on the training ground after a defeat, such is his will to win.

Nemanja Matic says Manchester United stars hide from Jose Mourinho after defeat. Matic also gave a glowing endorsement of Mourinho, calling him a 'great person'

'He's a great person,' Matic told Sky Sports. 'He's a different man outside the job and off the pitch.

'He does have a lot of pressure though because everyone expects him only to win. When we don't win everyone is waiting to see his reaction. He likes to win and when we don't win we are hiding from him at the training ground.

'He's happy when he's winning but when we lose, like every manager, he wants us to do better. He tries to find a way to be winning as soon as possible.'

The Serbian believes the United squad are all pulling in the right direction after a poor start

United's poor start to the campaign has brought accusations of unrest from outside the club, but Matic also insisted that such claims are false.

'We are all united,' the 30-year-old said. 'When we win we are all together and when we lose we are all together.

'It's not true what the media are writing. We are working hard and we will continue like this.

'The Manchester United name obligates us to be professionals and try to turn the situation as soon as possible and this is exactly what we are doing.'

United's mini-resurgence will be put to the test this week when they face Juventus away in the Champions League on Wednesday and then champions Manchester City in a local derby at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

MATIC INSISTS REDS WILL STRIVE FOR TOP-FOUR SPOT

Nemanja Matic has admitted that the players want to make the Manchester United fans happy by securing a place in the top four of the Premier League, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's seventh win out of seven since taking caretaker charge.

Paul Pogba's first-half penalty and Marcus Rashford's sublime finish were ultimately the difference at Old Trafford, despite Pascal Gross's strike as Solskjaer surpassed Sir Matt Busby's record of six straight wins after becoming Reds boss, following the win over Brighton.

And Matic, who again impressed in midfield, believes there are no easy games in the Premier League and insists the Reds will give our upmost to secure a top-four spot.

“The last 10-15 minutes were hard, but I think that we played good football today, we created a lot of chances,” he told MUTV after the win. “I think that the manager is happy with the first 75 minutes, but the last 10-15 minutes we dropped a little bit. They tried to use set-pieces to play long balls, they put some big guys up front and it was hard for us, but we managed to control [it], in the end, to take three points which is very important for us.

”In the Premier League, it's always hard,“ he continued. ”You cannot be sure you are always in control especially against this team, they are very strong at set-pieces, they have two big guys on that and they try to use them.

“We knew it, we saw some of their games which were enough to show they can hurt us but as I said, we managed to control it and to win and I'm happy for our team and our supporters. We will try to give our best to reach the top four until the end of the season.”

Matic believes the Reds have enough quality to challenge for a Champions League spot come the end of the season and re-iterated that the players are keen to repay the fans for their excellent backing.

“As I said, we will give our best,” he stressed. “The teams in front of us have quality and they will also try to play in the Champions League next season but I'm sure that we have enough qualities to compete with them.

”We will give our best and we will try to make our supporters happy.“

Arsenal's 2-0 win over Chelsea means the Gunners are ahead of United on goal difference, with both of Friday's Emirates FA Cup opponents only three points adrift of the fourth-placed Blues in the Premier League.

Rashford has scored in each of his last four Premier League games and his strike against Brighton was arguably the pick of the bunch. Matic believes, Marcus is one of the best players in the Premier League whilst admitting everyone is happy for Ole after the upturn in form.

“Marcus is very important for the team,” added the Serbian. “When he's in good form, he's one of the best players in the league and he scored a great goal. I think it's good for his confidence and I hope he continues like this.

”I think this is the best what can happen to Ole and to us. Seven games, seven wins. I think everyone is happy.“

Matic: MU Memang Tak Cukup Bagus
Novitasari Dewi Salusi - detikSport

Manchester - Manchester United dapat hasil imbang saat menjamu Burnley dalam lanjutan Liga Inggris. Nemanja Matic mengakui kalau MU memang tidak main bagus.

MU gagal melanjutkan rentetan kemenangannya usai bermain imbang melawan Burnley.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

MATIC: WE'LL BE BACK AFTER THE BREAK

Nemanja Matic is confident Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can reaffix the wheels on the Reds' bandwagon, after two successive defeats put the brakes on the momentum of the last three months.

Saturday night’s Emirates FA Cup quarter-final reverse at Wolves has cost United the chance of a domestic trophy.

It came on the back of the 2-0 loss at Arsenal in the Premier League that damaged the Reds' bid for a top-four place and with the international break now beginning, United will have to wait until Watford visit Old Trafford on 30 March for a chance to make amends.

However, Matic is convinced Solskjaer will restore the winning habit that he’d built up with 14 victories in 17 games prior to the recent blip; the Serbian knows the Reds cannot afford to allow the season to falter in the final two months.

“We will analyse this game to see where we made mistakes and see what we can do better,” said Nemanja after the match at Molineux.

“I am sure the manager will turn this situation around and we will do better. I want Ole to stay. He is a great manager, very positive.

“After the international break we will see. The first game back after a break is always difficult, especially for a team who has so many players away in the national teams. Almost everybody at United is on duty.

“We spoke after the game against Wolves and said we have to be focused for the next one and stick together and get into the top four which is the main target for us.

“We have to give our best now to reach the top four. We cannot let it go like this.

“We are not happy with the game [against Wolves]. We will analyse everything. There is a lot to play for. We have eight games to play in the Premier League and we are fighting for the top four. We have the Champions League as well.

“We will see what we are able to do and how much quality we have. We have to learn from this type of game.

“Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham will give their best to be in the top four. Everybody knows that,” he added, speaking on the eve of Chelsea's surprise 2-0 loss at Everton.

“If you see that two months ago we were 11 points behind Chelsea, then now we are in a much better position [in the Premier League table]. We have eight finals to play for us so we have to learn from this defeat.”

While Solskjaer described the 2-0 loss at Molineux as the worst performance of his time as caretaker boss since taking over in December, Matic saw a slightly different view from his vantage point on the pitch.

“I don’t think that we played bad but we have to be more clinical in the last third,” he said.

“Wolves let us have possession in the first half, let us have the ball but they showed they are very dangerous on the counter attack and they scored the second goal like that.

“We are sad we are out of the FA Cup, we gave everything but they were the better side and deserved to win. We have lost the last two games away to Arsenal and Wolves. I am not making an excuses but we have lost to two good sides.”

'I want him to stay, he is a great manager': Nemanja Matic defends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after back-to-back defeats signal end of honeymoon period for Manchester United boss

* Manchester United suffered second straight defeat against Wolves on Saturday
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called United's poor showing a 'big step backwards'
* Defeat by Wolves meant their best chance of silverware this season has been lost
* Nevertheless Solskjaer retains overwhelming support in the dressing room

After emerging from a second inquest in a week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was asked if the bounce that so often accompanies a change of manager is now over.

Has the bubble burst? Is the honeymoon period at an end? Has the feelgood factor that Solskjaer brought to Manchester United met its match in cold, hard reality?

It's a fair question. The Norwegian has been widely praised for the transformation at United since he returned as caretaker manager, and rightly so.

But back-to-back defeats by Arsenal in the Premier League and now Wolves in the FA Cup have had a sobering effect.

United are outside the top-four again and out of the FA Cup, their best chance of a trophy this season.

Suddenly, a lot more rests on beating Barcelona to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League. On this evidence, it appears unlikely but Solskjaer has already upset huge odds in Europe this season.

The challenge facing him now is to re-energise his players after two performances that were worryingly reminiscent of the Jose Mourinho era. United have looked ponderous, struggling to create chances at one end of the pitch and vulnerable at the other.

Solskjaer said the pain of defeat by Arsenal would safeguard against a repeat at Wolves, but it made little difference to the result in what he admitted was United's poorest showing on his watch. It was, he accepted, 'a big step backwards'.

There is plenty of food for thought while he waits for the majority of his players to return from international duty after admitting that the enforced break may have come at a good moment.

Solskjaer will spend some time with his family back in Norway, and his No.2 Mike Phelan is travelling to Australia in his role as sporting director of Central Coast Mariners.

The honeymoon period has ended for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after back-to-back defeats. The defeat ended United's FA Cup hopes and their best chance of silverware this season. Nemanja Matic has backed Solskjaer and said their remaining games will be 'eight finals'

United play Watford at home next and head back to Molineux to face Wolves in the league before Barcelona arrive at Old Trafford for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. It will interesting to see how they react to the double setback.

The idea of a bounce is that players respond to a new manager and approach. Solskjaer no longer has that in his favour. Perhaps the old problems he has papered over are beginning to show through.

Then again, United's resurgence since he took over more than three months ago has lasted long enough to suggest that it was never just a bounce in the first place. We had to wait until game No 18 before Arsenal inflicted his first domestic defeat.

Either way, there is no doubt that he enjoys overwhelming support in the dressing-room.

'I want Ole to stay, he is a great manager,' said midfielder Nemanja Matic. 'I'm sure he will turn this situation around and we will do better.

'When you win 10 games that means a lot because it is not easy. We have lost the last two away to Arsenal and Wolves. I am not making an excuse, but we have lost to two good sides.

'We have to give our best now to reach the top four. We have eight finals to play and we cannot let it go like this.'

Typically, Solskjaer was relishing the challenge less than an hour after seeing his team go out of the cup.

One plus over the last two games has been the return from injury and illness of six players – Matic, Anthony Martial, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Phil Jones. Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez will be closer to fitness after the international break.

It would be unwise to start writing off United, or Solskjaer, just yet.

'They work as a team. It is not only Ole': Nemanja Matic calls on Manchester United to keep Solskjaer AND his backroom staff in the summer

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has won 14 of his 19 games as Manchester United manager
* Nemanja Matic believes he should be given the job by club on permanent basis
* He also insisted the coaching staff were important to keep at Old Trafford

Nemanja Matic has thrown his weight behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's claims to be appointed permanent Manchester United manager.

Solskjaer has led United into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and dragged the Old Trafford club back into contention for a place in the top four since taking over.

And despite two defeats on the spin at Arsenal and Wolves prior to the international break, the Norwegian remains the most likely candidate for the job.

Nemanja Matic has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be permanent Manchester United boss. Matic is also keen for Solskjaer's backroom staff to be retained because of their importance. The midfielder said he believed the first win under Solskjaer, against Cardiff, was crucial

Matic has now heaped praise on him and called for the entire coaching staff to be kept on.

'I think he is a great manager,' Matic told ESPN when asked about the 46-year-old.

'But you have to say also that with Mike, Michael and Kieran, they work very well together. They work as a team. It is not only Ole.

'There are people behind him who help us. I will be happy if he stays, and I hope he will.'

Solskjaer has managed some surprising results since taking over, including wins against PSG, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.

It speaks for a general trend that has seen United win 14 of their 19 games since Jose Mourinho was dismissed in December.

Matic, surprisingly, believes the first win under Solskjaer, against Cardiff, has been the most important to their run of form.

'When you have good results, the confidence is higher,' he said. 'Especially in our team, confidence is very important because we have a lot of young players.

'After winning a few games under Ole, it was easier for us. To be honest, I don't know exactly what he has changed. After we won at Cardiff it was easier for us to play.'

‘We didn’t have any leaders on the pitch’: Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic delivers damning assessment of his team-mates after Everton thrashing

* Nemanja Matic criticised Manchester United's lack of leadership versus Everton
* United fell to a humiliating 4-0 defeat against the Toffees at Goodison Park
* Matic took responsibility for United's loss, and admitted that he struggled
* Midfielder suggested United struggle for motivation against non-top six teams

Nemanja Matic has hit out at Manchester United's lack of leadership in their 4-0 defeat away to Everton.

United's hopes of securing a top four finish suffered a further blow as goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott condemned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to a heavy defeat.

Matic admitted that he deserved criticism for his performance in the defeat given that he is one of his side's most experienced players.

Matic told Malaysian network Astro Supersport: 'I think many things didn't work for us today.

'The staff prepared the game in the same way that they prepare every game. They showed us every small detail where they (Everton) can hurt us, but I think the biggest problem was that we didn't have leaders today on the pitch.

'In this case me, because I'm one of the most experienced guys in the team, so if we don't win that battle in the midfield then for the whole team it's difficult to play. If someone is to blame for this game it's me.'

Nemanja Matic hit out at Manchester United's lack of leadership in their 4-0 loss to Everton. Matic assumed responsibility for the heavy loss United suffered at Goodison Park. Matic suggested that United struggle to motivate themselves against teams outside the top six

'I think various few things, but it is very important to have the right mentality, champions' mentality in the changing room.

'It's easy to say you have the right mentality when you are winning, but when you're losing the staff need to see what's wrong, and I'm sure they will analyse everything and they will find the right way to come back.'

United have lost six of their last eight games in all competitions since their incredible Champions League success away to Paris Saint-Germain last month.

Matic admitted that United's mentality can be called into question, but backed the coaching staff and the players to improve matters.

He said: 'I think various few things, but it is very important to have the right mentality, champions' mentality in the changing room.

'It's easy to say you have the right mentality when you are winning, but when you're losing the staff need to see what's wrong, and I'm sure they will analyse everything and they will find the right way to come back.'

United face a daunting task on Wednesday night as they host rivals Manchester City, who are aiming to edge closer to winning the title.

Matic is certain that United will be fully motivated for that game, but the Serbia international indicated that his team often struggle to give their all against teams from outside the top six.

He said: 'In these kind of games I think the motivation is there, always. This is not a problem for our team to find the motivation in this kind of game.

'The problem is when you play, I don't want to say small games, but teams that aren't in the top six. Also last season we had some troubles against the teams who are in the middle of the table or who are fighting to avoid relegation.'

Following their heavy loss to Everton, United remain in sixth place, two points adrift of Arsenal, who are fourth.

Default Re: Nemanja Matic

'In this squad we have quality and no experience': Alan Hansen was wrong about Alex Ferguson's Fledglings but Nemanja Matic says Man United will struggle to win titles with kids

* Nemanja Matic, 30, is in contention to be Manchester United's captain this term
* He played in pre-season wins against Perth Glory, Leeds, Inter and Tottenham
* The successful Chelsea teams Matic played in were packed with experience
* But United lack experience and Matic feels that will stop them winning titles

Nemanja Matic, the last Manchester United player to have won the Premier League, believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team needs more experience before they can seriously challenge for the title.

Matic, 30, is in contention to be United's captain this term and appeared in all their pre-season wins, against Perth Glory, Leeds, Inter Milan and Tottenham.

'Quality and experience brings you the title. In this squad we have quality and no experience,' says the Serbian midfielder, who won the league with Chelsea in 2015 and 2017.

'We have five or six top players but they are still young like Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. They have shown their quality on the pitch but are too young to lead the team of course.

'Mason Greenwood - great potential. United have a project and know what they want with players of the future. But you need to give them time because, at 17, you cannot play the same like you are 26 or 27.

'Football always wants results but the fans need to be patient so they can improve. In the future I am sure these players will take United back to where they belong.'

The successful Chelsea teams Matic played in were packed with knowhow. In 2015, John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic were ever-presents in the side under then manager Jose Mourinho and the club still had Didier Drogba and Petr Cech in the dressing room. 'I was one of the young ones,' said Matic.

Nemanja Matic believes Manchester United needs more experience to win the big trophies. TV pundit Alan Hansen famously said United could not win anything with kids which backfired

Two years later, Antonio Conte relied on Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Pedro to get Chelsea over the line. 'We had young talented players like Eden Hazard but you need a mix of experience with that talent,' said Matic, who is likely to be the oldest member of Solskjaer's otherwise-youthful first XI this season.

United's 100 per cent record during their tours to Australia, Singapore and China has given Matic and United a boost after they finished a distant sixth behind Manchester City and Liverpool last term.

Matic's own form was also below par after returning from the 2018 World Cup. But it looked significant that, when Solskjaer named his strongest team in the first half against Inter last Saturday, Matic wore the armband. The United manager still has to make his decision about a permanent captain but the midfielder will be in his thoughts, alongside Ashley Young, Paul Pogba, David de Gea and Juan Mata.

United's original Captain Marvel, Bryan Robson, believes the Serbian could do the job, having watched the way he dishes out instructions to team-mates in training. 'Last season hurt. When I come home I always look in the mirror and want to see where I could do better. Of course I was not happy,' said Matic.

'There were some games I played great, some I didn't perform the way I wanted. This is football. It can't always be at that high level and I am sure this season is going to be better.

'I have started pre-season with the team after two or three years without one. Physically I feel good, so I am sure I will perform in the way I'm used to.'

Though softly spoken off the pitch, Matic stresses he can be verbal during training and matches when necessary.

'It's always great to hear when someone like Mr Robson says good things. It means something to me,' said Matic. 'Of course I am one of the most experienced players in the team and I will try to lead them the best way I can. Especially in front of me they need to listen. I am here to help.

'It was a pleasure to be captain against Inter, an honour. It doesn't matter what the game is, I will always remember it. Not many players get to be captain.

'As for the future, maybe, who knows? The manager has to make his decision about the captain. Whatever he decides, we will be happy of course. The captaincy is important but, if we play good football and fight for each other, that is the most important.'

Solskjaer has signed two youngsters, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James, this summer as he attempts to rebuild United but he wants to add England and Leicester defender Harry Maguire and a midfield player such as Tottenham's Christian Eriksen, with uncertainty remaining over Pogba's future.

United will also be in the market for a striker should Romelu Lukaku complete a move to Inter Milan.
