Basle coach Raphael Wicky plays down concerns about St Jakob-Park pitch before Manchester United clash

* Raphael Wicky claims the St Jakob-Park pitch won't be a problem on Wednesday
* Manchester United meet the Swiss side in Group A of the Champions League
* The pitch was re-laid last week after it cut up badly during heavy rain
* It was quickly replaced in time for Basle's game against Sion last Saturday

Basle coach Raphael Wicky insists the pitch at St Jakob-Park will not be a problem when Manchester United meet the Swiss side in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

United only need a point to be guaranteed qualification and top spot in Group A, although Jose Mourinho’s side will progress to the knockout phase even before kick-off if CSKA Moscow fail to beat Benfica at home in the earlier game.

However, the state of the pitch in Basle is under the microscope after it was re-laid following last week’s World Cup playoff between Switzerland and Northern Ireland which saw the playing surface cut up badly after heavy rain.

It was quickly replaced for Saturday’s game against Sion, which Basle won 5-1, but concerns have been raised ahead of United’s visit. It is not the first time that Mourinho has encountered pitch problems as United boss following issues in Beijing, Odessa and Rostov.

But Wicky believes it will be good enough to play on, saying: ‘I haven’t seen it since Saturday but it’s actually better than it looks.

‘It might have some flaws in colour, but that doesn’t take anything away from the function. Once the ball jumped up a little high, but overall the pitch is good.’

Raphael Wicky believes the St Jakob-Park pitch will not be an issue against Manchester United. Concerns have risen over the state of the St Jakob-Park pitch after it was re-laid last week

Basle are looking to repeat a famous win over United in 2011 when a 2-1 victory here saw the Swiss side progress to the knockout stage of the Champions League at the expense of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

’Yes I believe we can do it again,’ said Wicky. ‘Everything is possible in football.

‘Of course we're not favourites and we play an enormously strong side. Everything has to be perfect to win against them, just as it was in 2011. But yes it's possible.’

MATCH PREVIEW : BASEL V MANCHESTER UNITED

What’s the team news? The boss confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Chris Smalling would start in the heart of the defence on Wednesday night, however, Mourinho also admitted Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are sidelined. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcos Rojo and Paul Pogba all returned to Saturday's matchday squad, and all three travelled to Switzerland as part of the Reds' party, though Michael Carrick continues to be absent. Meanwhile, for the hosts, Omar Gaber, Germano Vailait and Ricky van Wolfswinkel are all expected to be unavailable through injury, and Taulant Xhaka will miss out through suspension.

How are FC Basel doing? The Swiss outfit currently sit in second place in Group A with six points from their opening four games, and will be hoping to reach the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time in three seasons. Meanwhile, Raphael Wicky’s side lie second in the Swiss Super League, six points behind leaders BSC Young Boys, and they head into Wednesday’s fixture on the back of a dominant 5-1 victory over bottom side Sion.

Have we faced FC Basel before? Yes, we have met on five previous occasions, all of which were in the Champions League group stages. The last time we made the visit to St. Jakob-Park was in 2011, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for United. However, the most recent encounter was at Old Trafford back in September, and then, goals from Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford and Lukaku handed the Reds a comprehensive 3-0 win.

Did you know? Four of the 11 that started the 2-1 defeat to Basel back in December 2011 remain at the club six years later (De Gea, Smalling, Jones, Young).

Who is the referee? Daniele Orsato will be officiating Wednesday’s game in Basel, and it will be the Italian’s first United game since 2012, when he oversaw our 1-0 Champions League defeat to CFR Cluj. Orsato has handed out 23 bookings in his last three matches, the most recent of which was a World Cup play-off first leg tie between Honduras and Australia.

SMALLING : DEFENDERS SHOULD BE FEARFUL

Chris Smalling says defenders should be fearful of coming up against Manchester United's world-class attackers.

Speaking at a press conference in Basel, ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash with the Swiss side, the defender admitted the firepower at Jose Mourinho's disposal is frightening now Zlatan Ibrahimovic is back in the fold.

"I think it would strike fear into myself if I was playing against them, and it strikes fear into most teams," Smalling told reporters. "Obviously we've got Paul [Pogba] back too, who's a very attacking midfielder, and along with Ibra and all those other names it just gives us so many options and no matter what game it is, no matter what competition it is, we've got a front three or four who can cause the opposition problems. So if we keep it tight at the back, more often that not, we're going to win the game."

The centre-back was also quizzed about his exclusion from the last England squad by coach Gareth Southgate.

"Was I surprised [to be left out]?" he said. "Yes, I was. But you don't play for one of the biggest clubs in the world for as long as I have, and probably won the most trophies, bar the Champions League, without being a top defender, who can play and defend.

"I think, this year, we've got one of the best defensive records and I'm very proud to be a part of that. While I'm playing under Jose, and I'm playing regularly, I'm happy with that.

"I play under one of the biggest, most successful managers in Jose, and he's only going to pick the best players. So, while I'm playing regularly and he's happy, and my season carries on like this, and we have a successful season and our team concedes very few goals - it maybe gives him no choice in the summer, but to pick me."

BOSS REVEALS TEAM NEWS FOR BASEL

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has addressed the media in Switzerland ahead of the Reds' Champions League tie at Basel on Wednesday.

The Reds trained in front of the cameras in the morning at the Aon Training Complex with all of the senior squad taking part except Eric Bailly, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Marcos Rojo were all in the matchday party for the 4-1 win over Newcastle United last weekend and should be available again.

Jones has a "proper injury" that will rule him out of the European clash and also Saturday's Premier League encounter with Brighton so Chris Smalling starts. Ibrahimovic will be on the bench again following his cameo against the Magpies while Bailly has a chance to be fit for the Brighton game.

The manager was asked about Henrikh Mkhitaryan's exclusion on Saturday and replied: "There is always a question about someone who is not playing or is not in the best form. There are no questions about Anthony Martial and no questions about Chris Smalling.

"There are always questions about somebody in a certain moment, a certain match and a certain period that didn't play. The story is always the same. In some positions, when you don't have injuries, you have lots of options in other positions. In this moment, we have Pogba, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay so I can imagine, next week, you are going to ask - why is this player not playing?

"Micki is not playing because we had lots of options for that match. I decided to play Marcus Rashford and Martial together. For many weeks, the questions was - why do they not play together? Now the question is why is Micki not playing. The answer is every simple - until the international board change the rules, I can only start with 11!"

The boss also suggested he is comfortable with the state of the pitch after it was relaid, so he will have no problem playing his returning stars. Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard is one booking away from a suspension in the competition.

Basel will be without suspended midfielder Taulant Xhaka, with coach Raphael Wicky admitting: "We will miss him." Omar Gaber, Germano Vailati and Ricky van Wolfswinkel are also expected to be sidelined.

Jose Mourinho keeping calm despite Basle defeat as he insists Manchester United 'can lose by some numbers' in final group game and still go through

* Manchester United conceded a last-gasp 89th-minute goal to lose against Basle
* Defeat means United are still not through but Jose Mourinho is not worried
* United boss says 'we can lose by some numbers and still go through' to last 16
* CSKA Moscow would have to beat Man United by six goals to knock them out

A bemused Jose Mourinho was left counting the cost of a first Champions League defeat of the season after Manchester United lost to a late goal in Basle on Wednesday night.

Michael Lang's 89th-minute winner means that United, Basle and CSKA Moscow can all finish on 12 points in Group A if the Russians win at Old Trafford next month.

However, CSKA would have to beat United by six goals, meaning that Mourinho's side are almost certain to progress to the knockout stage despite losing their 100 per cent record.

'Can you help me with the maths?' said the United boss afterwards.

'What do we need against CSKA? I don't even think we need to draw. We can lose by some numbers and still go through.'

Mourinho was even more confused that United had managed to lose a game they dominated in the first half, making several clear chances and hitting the woodwork twice.

Jose Mourinho is remaining calm despite a last-gasp defeat by Basle in the Champions League

'We lost because in the first half should be 5-0. We could not score one after being so dominant in such an easy way that it seemed impossible not to win,' he added.

'But if you miss so many chances you put yourself in this situation.

'The first half was a perfect half without the goals, was perfect. It was difficult to repeat in the second half.

Manchester United are still in command in Group A despite the defeat in Switzerland

'I think we play a match like this 10 times and nine we win comfortably. The one was now.'

Mourinho acknowledged that his team seemed to be settling for a goalless draw that would have taken them through as group winners when Basle struck.

He added: 'The fact we knew one point is enough, probably we thought is not now our time to try to win and time to control and in the end we lost. But it's hard for me to be upset with the players.'

Default Re: [UCL] FC Basel 1-0 Manchester United

Jose Mourinho rues missed chances for Manchester United and admits it seemed 'impossible' not to beat Basle

* Basle 1-0 Manchester United: Jose Mourinho's men rolled over by Swiss - report
* Jose Mourinho says Manchester United should have been 5-0 up at half time
* Basle absorbed pressure before before Michael Lang's winner in the 89th minute
* Mourinho insists his team are not worried about failing to qualify for knockouts

Jose Mourinho insists Manchester United were so dominant in the first half against Basle that it seemed 'impossible not to win' and insists they remain in a comfortable position despite the shock loss.

The Swiss side absorbed heavy pressure from the group leaders before Michael Lang secured a famous victory with a smash-and-grab strike in the 89th minute, leaving United in need of a point to guarantee qualification.

But Mourinho was defiant in defeat and claimed Manchester United deserved to be well ahead after hitting the woodwork twice in the first half and reminded critics that they are still almost certain to make the knockout stages.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Mourinho said: ‘We lost because in the first half it should be 5-0, we could not score one after being so dominant in such an easy way that it seemed impossible not to win.

'But if you miss so many chances you put yourself in this situation. The feeling in the second half is that it would be 0-0, but then they scored.

‘Only thing I see is that they put in a low cross and the wing back appeared behind [Daley] Blind.

Manchester United were made to wait for qualification to the knockout rounds after the defeat. Jose Mourinho insists his side should have been five goals to the good after the first half

'I don’t think it is fair for him to blame himself because he had a positive game. We have to blame everyone on the pitch; it is always risk if you give so many chances.'

'What do we need against CSKA? We don’t need to win the match. I don’t even think we need to draw. We can lose by some numbers and still go through.’

Manchester United face CSKA Moscow in their final group game and would fail to qualify if they lose by six or more goals to give Basle a chance of surmounting them.

They will also drop to second in the group, behind CSKA, if they lose by five goals. Neither situation is likely to occur.
