David Moyes has challenged Adnan Januzaj to step up and fire Sunderland to safety after the Belgian was jeered off the pitch by the club's own supporters.

Januzaj, the 21-year-old playmaker on loan from Manchester United, was substituted in the 66th minute of Sunderland's 2-0 defeat by West Brom on Saturday.

First-half strikes from Darren Fletcher and Chris Brunt consigned Sunderland to a sixth loss in eight Premier League games and Moyes' side dropped to the foot of the table.

'I am probably the toughest one on Adnan because I know what he has got,' Moyes said. 'I would say to him, we need more from him. He is going to have to show more strength at times.

'He has great skills but at this moment in time he is finding it tough. It is for him to show how good a player he is and let me tell you he is desperate to do that.

'I know him and can see him in training. It is not for the want of trying, sometimes his body language gives you that feeling but he is a good player and will get some goals before the end of the season.'

Moyes appeared despondent after this latest setback. He is hamstrung by limited funds in the transfer market, a long injury list and players away at the African Cup of Nations.

'New faces do help, but we are a bit limited in terms of what we can do. People can probably make mistakes for us and be in the team next week because of where we are at.'

'We will work hard to get people in.'

West Brom, by contrast, continue to look upwards and are well-placed in eighth. There was a debut for new £10m signing Jake Livermore as Tony Pulis's side won a fifth Premier League home game in six.

It was also the first game in the aftermath of Saido Berahino's long-standing transfer saga as the forward completed his move to Stoke. Pulis will have the £12m to reinvest but he has cooled his interest in forward Odion Ighalo, insisting that Watford 'want too much.'

'I wish Saido all the best,' Pulis said. 'What he has got to do now is wash all the nonsense out of his head that has been swilling round for the last 18 months and concentrate on becoming a professional footballer again. If he does that then Stoke have got a very, very good player.'

Manchester United are prepared to sell Adnan Januzaj this summer.

Januzaj has one year left on his contract and manager Jose Mourinho hinted last week that he has already made up his mind on the 22-year-old's future.

The Belgium international has struggled to make an impression while on loan at Sunderland.

He has failed to score in his 21 Premier League appearances for the Black Cats, netting once in the EFL Cup against Shrewsbury, and was shown a red card in the defeat at Tottenham in September.

He has made 50 league appearances during his time at United, scoring five times but never fulfilling the potential has shown in intervals.

Real Sociedad have joined a list of clubs ready to sign Adnan Januzaj from Manchester United this summer.

Januzaj has fallen way down the pecking order since breaking onto the scene at Old Trafford in 2013 and struggled last season to shine on loan at a Sunderland side relegated from the Premier League.

Celtic and Marseille are also considering a move for the Belgian international, but Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay has admitted he is yet to hold talks over a deal with the Red Devils.

'It’s true that we are interested [in Januzaj], but we are not in talks with Manchester or with him,' Aperribay said.

'We are waiting for the decision of Manchester United and then we will act. There are more teams interested in him and his signing won’t be easy.'

Januzaj enjoyed a sensational first season at Manchester United in the club's troubled 2013-14 campaign under David Moyes, but has failed to hit the same heights since.

The 22-year-old struggled on loan at Borussia Dortmund during the 2015-16 season, while Moyes couldn't bring out the best in the youngster for the Black Cats last term.

Jose Mourinho admitted back in April that his mind was already made up over Januzaj's Old Trafford future.

But he declined to say whether the Belgian was part of his long term plans.

Mourinho said; 'I have decided but I am not telling you.'

It remains to be seen if United include a buyback option in the deal with Sociedad, which is expected to be confirmed on Wednesday, but it’s a sign of his marked decline that no-one at the club will be surprised to see him go.

Jose Mourinho is in the market for a new winger and wants Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic, but had little interest in giving Januzaj an opportunity to show that he still has something to offer United.

Despite claiming last summer that Januzaj had a future at Old Trafford when he joined Sunderland on loan, Mourinho admitted in April that he had made a decision about the player. It seemed clear then that Januzaj’s United days were numbered.

He had an uninspiring season at the Stadium of Light under his old United boss David Moyes as the club finished bottom of the Premier League and were relegated. Januzaj scored just once in 28 games, in the EFL Cup against Shrewsbury.

That followed an even more disappointing loan spell at Dortmund after Januzaj joined the Bundesliga club against the advice of United manager Louis van Gaal.

He didn’t start a single league game and the season-long arrangement was torn up after just five months with Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel criticising the player’s attitude.

It was a far cry from the fanfare that greeted the announcement of Januzaj’s five-year deal in October 2013.

Under pressure to deliver some good news after a disappointing start to the post-Ferguson era and frustrating first transfer window under Moyes, United gave the teenager a lucrative contract amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

That came just two weeks after Januzaj marked his full Premier League debut for United with a two-goal performance at Sunderland.

Roy Hodgson even considered trying to persuade Januzaj to play for England at the 2014 World Cup before the young winger opted for Belgium, his country of birth.

Those days seem rather distant now as he sets about rebuilding his once promising career in Spain.

Adnan Januzaj has completed a transfer from Manchester United to Real Sociedad.

The Academy graduate and Belgium international has signed with the side who finished sixth in La Liga last season, bringing an end to a Reds career that consisted of 66 senior appearances and five goals.

Januzaj made his United debut in the FA Community Shield win over Wigan Athletic in August 2013 and established himself as an excellent prospect that season, famously scoring a brace at Sunderland under the management of David Moyes – who is coincidentally a former boss of Real Sociedad.

Opportunities proved hard to come by during Louis van Gaal’s first season at Old Trafford and that led to a loan spell at Borussia Dortmund in 2015/16, the Dutchman’s second campaign with United.

Jose Mourinho allowed Adnan to spend last season on loan at Sunderland and now the 22-year-old forward has taken the tough decision to leave United and make the move San Sebastian.

Using his personal Twitter account on Wednesday, Januzaj posted this statement: "Where to start... I've had some incredible moments with Manchester United since I joined. I want to say a massive thank you to all my team-mats that have come and gone from the club. It's been a pleasure to play with you all.

"Thank you to some of the coaches and staff that work at Manchester United to make it such a great club! Unfortunately, my time at the club has come to an end and it didn't go the way I wanted it to go but I will aways have love for Manchester United. And finally, a huge thank you to the fans that have stuck by me through the good and bad times! I will never forget that positive support. Thank you #GGMU ."

Adnan Januzaj has thanked 'some of the coaches and staff' at Manchester United after leaving the club to join Real Sociedad on a permanent deal worth £9.8million.

Januzaj sealed his exit from United by completing his transfer to La Liga outfit Sociedad, both clubs confirmed on Wednesday night.

And the Belgium international took to Instagram to post a message to United's supporters after being unveiled as a Sociedad player, choosing to only pay tribute to a section of the coaches at Old Trafford.

'Thank you to some of the coaches and staff that work at Manchester United to make it such a great club!' wrote Januzaj in the social media post.

'Unfortunately, my time at the club has come to an end and it didn’t go the way I wanted it to go but I will always have love for Manchester United'.

Januzaj failed to nail down a first team spot since making his debut for United in 2013 and spent the majority of the last two seasons out on loan at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland respectively.

The 22-year-old endured a miserable spell at the Stadium of Light during the 2016-17 campaign as the Black Cats finished bottom of the Premier League.

Januzaj joins a Sociedad side that finished sixth in the Spanish table last season to secure qualification for the Europa League.

United released a statement on their official website announcing the transfer and wishing their former player good luck for the future: 'Everybody at Manchester United wishes Adnan well for the next chapter of his career.'

Januzaj broke into the first team in 2013 under David Moyes and scored twice in his first start for the club as United came from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1.

However he struggled to break into the first team under Louis Van Gaal in 2014-15 and was sent out on loan to Bundesliga outfit Dortmund the following year - where he made just six league appearances.

Januzaj's unsuccessful loan spell at Sunderland in 2016-17 appears to have made Jose Mourinho's mind up and the Belgium international has now been allowed to leave on a permanent deal.

Speaking to Sociedad's website, he said: 'I'm very excited to meet the fans and start the season as quick as we can.'

He becomes the third major United exit this summer, following Zlatan Ibrahimovic's release and Wayne Rooney's free transfer to Everton.
