Wes Brown insists Man United CAN earn point against 'underachieving' PSG and qualify for the Champions League last 16... but warns Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men they must improve in defence against French champions

* Manchester United sit top of Group H ahead of meeting Paris Saint-Germain
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have won their last four games in all competitions
* PSG have won just two of the last five and drew at home to Bordeaux on Saturday
* Wes Brown believes United must rectify the issue that has been there all season

Wes Brown insists Manchester United have a better chance of securing passage into the Champions League last-16 against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night than RB Leipzig next week, but warned them they must improve defensively to do so.

United need just one more point to qualify from Group H and have won their last four games across all competitions, while the French champions have claimed victory in just two of their last five fixtures.

The Old Trafford's side's defensive issues were palpable in the first half of the win against Southampton, going 2-0 down before an Edinson Cavani-inspired fightback saw them emerge 3-2 winners at St Mary's.

Wes Brown insists Harry Maguire (left) and Man United's defence must improve to beat PSG. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men need just one point to qualify for the Champions League last 16

And former United defender Brown - who praised Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for adding Donny van de Beek to revive the midfield in recent weeks - believes another win against an 'underachieving' PSG following their 2-1 success in Paris in October could be on the cards if they shore up the backline.

'United have got a better chance of picking up some points here than the away game at RB Leipzig [in their final group game],' Brown said.

'PSG at the moment are probably not at their best. United have been doing ok, I know Ole has been changing the team a lot in the last couple of games. He has got a lot out of the three in the midfield by bringing Donny in. You can see there is a different style of play.

'I think United are more than capable of getting a point with a PSG team that is underachieving at the moment. The way they have been playing, even when they went 2-0 down against Southampton, I didn't feel like they were getting battered in the game, I always felt they felt comfortable.

Defensive issues were evident before Edinson Cavani inspired them to beat Southampton. Brown insists that if United can rectify that they can overcome an 'underachieving' PSG side. He added the uniqueness of the Champions League is behind their good home form in Europe. Bruno Fernandes and co have won both home European ties but struggled domestically

'They definitely need to tighten up the defence in that situation, and you could say that has been happening all season. I do feel like they have controlled games and created chances and they are putting those chances away at the moment.

'If they can shut shop at the back I think the team has shown going forward that they are more than capable of scoring.'

United have been imperious in Europe at Old Trafford this season, beating Leipzig by five goals without conceding before recording a 4-1 victory against Istanbul Basaksehir last week.

However, Solskjaer's men have been unable to recreate that magic domestically and have secured victory in just one of their five top-flight matches at Old Trafford and lost to the Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Arsenal.

Brown admits he is stumped as to their failure to convert European home dominance into good domestic home form but admitted the 'uniqueness' of playing the continent's best sides in the Champions League may be the motive behind the players stepping up their game.

'In the Premier League it has not quite happened especially for the start of the season and the first game at home [against Crystal Palace],' Brown added.

'They have not really looked comfortable but for some reason in Europe they have rustled together and the lads have all got together and produced.

'Maybe it is the uniqueness of the competition that it is and the lads have stepped up and they do need to do that going forward in the Premier League. I just think with the way they are going into games, they will be looking forward to this game [against PSG].'

CHRIS SUTTON: Playing on the counter works in Manchester United's favour... PSG were frustrated by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's 3-4-1-2 system in Paris and a similar approach can reap rewards despite being back at home

* Manchester United had 39 per cent possession at the Parc des Princes and won
* Fred and Scott McTominay frustrated Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in that game
* Playing a 3-4-1-2 system with Bruno Fernandes supplying the forwards may work
* Edinson Cavani should start after his goalscoring exploits against Southampton

Manchester United are good at getting results when they relinquish possession and target opponents on the counter-attack.

Look at their first two group games in the Champions League this season. Away to Paris Saint-Germain, United had 39 per cent possession, and won 2-1. Home to RB Leipzig, United had 47 per cent, and won 5-0.

Problems can crop up when they try to dominate the contest. In their third group game, at Istanbul Basaksehir, United had 68 per cent and lost 2-1.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may well adopt a counter-attacking approach despite being at home. Marcus Rashford scored a late winner at the Parc des Princes when Manchester United won 2-1

So on Wednesday against PSG, even though United are at Old Trafford, I'd say relying on the counter and providing protection in front of the defence is key.

That might not be what United got used to under Sir Alex Ferguson, when they would forever take the game to the opposition, but it works for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Fred and Scott McTominay — in front of a back three of Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe — did a job on PSG at the Parc des Princes in October. Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel di Maria were frustrated throughout.

Edinson Cavani will hope to replicate Sunday's brilliance against the club that released him

Using that 3-4-1-2 system again might not be the worst idea. When you win the ball, you give it to Bruno Fernandes, as he is more than capable of playing passes into the channels for the forwards to chase.

We know Solskjaer likes his split strikers, so the next question is: does Edinson Cavani start against his old club?

As a former striker, I'd be less than pleased if I'd scored two goals and assisted one as a substitute in a 3-2 win then was back on the bench. That would be harsh on Cavani, and I'd like to see him start.

SCORE PREDICTION: 1-1

PLAYER RATINGS: Neymar was at his clinical best to score twice for PSG while Fred and Anthony Martial had nights to forget for Manchester United after red card and glaring miss

* Neymar scored twice for Paris Saint-Germain as they beat Manchester United
* The Brazilian opened and finished the scoring with Marquinhos netting the other
* Marcus Rashford scored for the hosts but defeat means an exciting final round
* Fred was also sent off for the hosts and had an evening to forget at Old Trafford

It's all to play for in Group H after PSG beat Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Neymar scored twice for last season's Champions League finalists, with captain Marquinhos netting the other for the visitors after Marcus Rashford had cancelled out the Brazilian forward's opener.

United were also reduced to 10 men when Fred was sent off after escaping a red card in the first half, and here Sportsmail rates both sets of players from the enthralling fixture.

MANCHESTER UTD (4-2-3-1)

David De Gea - 6

Weak attempt to stop first goal but made great save from sub Bakker — not at fault for the other goals.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 5.5

Another busy night marking Mbappe and he did just enough to thwart the Frenchman.

Victor Lindelof - 6.5

Swede was composed in the face of a very lively PSG attack containing some of the world's best.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka had another busy night marking Kylian Mbappe and struggled at times

Harry Maguire - 6

Shaky start but settled into the game. Bamboozed by Neymar for PSG's third goal.

Alex Telles - 7

United's new left back continues to impress in Shaw's absence. Got forward well again.

Fred - 5

Second yellow card was harsh but overdue after first-half clashes with Paredes and Co.

Fred's red card was harsh but overdue after first-half clashes with Leandro Paredes

Scott McTominay - 6.5

Beaten by Mbappe for first goal but gave very little else away in the rest of the game.

Marcus Rashford - 7

PSG's bogeyman struck again with the help of a big deflection but injured later and went off.

Bruno Fernandes - 6.5

Final pass lacking at times but still a real threat. Could have done better with his shooting.

Anthony Martial - 5.5

Back from illness and guilty of awful miss early in second half that could have changed the game.

Edinson Cavani – 6.5

PSG's all-time top scorer was denied great goal by the bar when he chipped his old mate Navas.

Subs: Bailly, Pogba (for Rashford 74, 6.5), Mata, Greenwood (for Martial 79, 6), Lingard, James, Fosu-Mensah, Ighalo, Henderson, Matic, Williams, Van de Beek (for Cavani 79, 6).

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - 6

Will regret not replacing Fred when he had the chance. This was a big setback. Now he needs a result in Leipzig.
