Default Re: [EPL] Liverpool vs Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hopeful of having key trio Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof fit for top-of-the-table clash with rivals Liverpool as Manchester United look to lay down a marker in the Premier League

* Manchester United are looking to topple Liverpool as Premier League leaders
* United overcame Championship side Watford in the FA Cup on the weekend
* They could leapfrog Liverpool before their top-of-the-table clash at Anfield
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tried to manage expectations, but it is getting harder
* And they are likely to have a triple injury boost ahead of the Liverpool encounter

Manchester United will focus on replacing Liverpool as Premier League pacesetters after clearing their first hurdle in the FA Cup.

Victory over Burnley at Turf Moor would take United above Liverpool into first place ahead of Sunday's top-of-the-table clash between the bitter rivals at Anfield.

The good news for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is that Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof, who all missed a rather scrappy win over Watford through injury, should be fit for that game. 'I hope so for Liverpool, definitely,' said Solskjaer. 'I'm not sure if they'll make Burnley.'

Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof should be fit for Man United's clash vs Liverpool. United have emerged as surprise contenders with Liverpool for the Premier League title. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side will focus on replacing the Reds as Premier League pacesetters

The return of Lindelof and Shaw would be even more helpful given Eric Bailly went off before half-time against Watford following a collision with keeper Dean Henderson.

Bailly will have scans on a neck injury and is unlikely to be available for either league game this week.

'He's all right, that's the main thing,' said Axel Tuanzebe, Bailly's centre back partner on Saturday. 'He's a warrior, that's what he does for us. He gets in the way of things. He should be training next week.'

United have not been top in mid-January since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was heading for a well-earned retirement.

Solskjaer has tried to manage expectations, but it is getting harder. 'I think it's great our fans are excited, and they're happy with where we're at,' said the United boss.

'Every game against Liverpool matters a lot anyway, but all eyes are on Tuesday and then let's see where we're at after that one.

'We're not even halfway through the season and every game in the Premier League is a challenge. No one will remember what the league table looked like on January 12.'

A United side showing nine changes were made to work hard by Watford despite scoring early through Scott McTominay, who headed in an Alex Telles corner.

Anthony Martial could be fit for Manchester United's top-of-the-table showdown against bitter rivals Liverpool, with star's hamstring injury not as bad as first feared

* Anthony Martial hurt his hamstring at the end of Tuesday's win at Burnley
* But the Frenchman was moving freely after the game at Turf Moor finished
* The 25-year-old will be assessed on Thursday morning by club's physios
* Martial could yet be involved in Sunday's clash against champions Liverpool

Manchester United will give Anthony Martial as much time as possible to prove his fitness for Sunday's top-of-the-table showdown with Liverpool at Anfield.

The 25-year-old appeared to hurt his hamstring as he attempted a shot at the end of United's win at Burnley on Tuesday night and was immediately replaced by Axel Tuanzebe.

Club sources say the injury is not as bad as first feared and Martial was moving freely after the game, but the Frenchman will be assessed on Thursday morning after the players were given Wednesday off.

Manchester United will give Anthony Martial as much time as possible to prove his fitness. Martial limped off after appearing to hurt his hamstring late on against Burnley on Tuesday

United's victory at Turf Moor took them three points clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will want to use Martial's pace against the champions.

However, if United's 23-goal top-scorer last season loses his fitness battle, Edinson Cavani could lead the line again after starting at Burnley, and Solskjaer has other wide options in Mason Greenwood, Dan James and Juan Mata.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Manchester United's trip to Liverpool 'couldn't have come at a better time' after his side went top of the Premier League following their victory over Burnley

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says United's trip to Liverpool has come at the best time
* United have moved top of the Premier League for the first time since 2017
* They beat Burnley 1-0 to move three points clear of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool
* Solskjaer says United are 'hungry' and 'excited' for their clash with Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said Manchester United's trip to Liverpool could not have come at a better time after moving top of the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

The United manager has described the showdown at Anfield on Sunday as a 'test of character and quality' but insists his side are 'ready, hungry and excited'.

Solskjaer believes United are 'in a good position' going into the game against the reigning champions - having claimed a 'hard-fought three points' against Burnley on Tuesday.

Speaking of United's upcoming game at Liverpool, Solskjaer said: 'What a brilliant position to be in.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Man United's trip to Liverpool couldn't have come at a better time. Solskjaer says they are 'ready', 'hungry' and 'excited' for their clash with Liverpool on Sunday

'We know it's going to be hard - what an unbelievable three-and-a-half seasons Liverpool have had, but we're ready and excited for it.

'We couldn't have asked for a better time to go there. We're hungry for it and it's a test of character and quality again. We're in a good position going into it.'

Solskjaer's confidence comes off the back of United's 1-0 win at Burnley on Tuesday.

Paul Pogba's deflected volley saw United walk away from the game victorious and move three points clear of Liverpool, who have failed to win in their last three league games.

Solskjaer described the win as 'a hard-fought three points' and said it 'always is' against Burnley.

Solskjaer went on to praise Sean Dyche's side before crediting Pogba for a 'well executed finish'.

He said: 'Burnley are so well organised and there's not many spaces but we did look at some of them - great cross for the goal, very well executed finish. We could've had a few more to calm the nerves but we did it the hard way.'

Speaking of United's nerves, Solskjaer explained how 'emotions were running high at half-time', forcing him to calm his players down before the second half.

He said: 'You've got to calm them down at half-time because emotions are running high because they disagree with the things that happen out there so we have to take back control and we played really well in the second half and we held out at the end.'

Default Re: [EPL] Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

PLAYER RATINGS: Roberto Firmino wasted Liverpool's best chances while Bruno Fernandes had his worst game in a Manchester United shirt in top-of-the-table Anfield stalemate

* Liverpool and Manchester United played out a stalemate at Anfield on Sunday
* Bruno Fernandes typified the lack of cutting edge for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side
* The Red Devils remain top of the league, three points ahead of rivals Liverpool

Liverpool and Manchester United played out a drab goalless draw at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Both sides had little spark in attack, with only seven shots on target in total between both sides.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side had the better of the late chances, with two strong saves late on from Reds goalkeeper Alisson, and the point leaves the Red Devils top of the Premier League with Liverpool three points back.

Sportsmail's Chris Wheeler rated the performances of the players from both sides.

Manchester United (4-2-3-1)

DAVID DE GEA 6.5 – Flying save from Thiago and dealt with everything else comfortably.

AARON WAN-BISSAKA 7 – Came out on top with his duel with Mane and got forward well.

VICTOR LINDELOF 7 – Justified his selection with several fine interceptions in front of goal.

HARRY MAGUIRE 6.5 – Shaky start from him but stood strong when it mattered.

LUKE SHAW 8 – One of his best games. Outstanding in defence and a threat going forward.

Manchester United left back Luke Shaw was excellent throughout and shackled Mo Salah well

SCOTT McTOMINAY 6 – There to break up play and add bite to midfield. Did his job.

FRED 6.5 – Countered Liverpool threat and broke forward well on several occasions.

PAUL POGBA 6.5 – Grew into unfamiliar role on the right, but blew United's best chance.

BRUNO FERNANDES 4.5 – Probably his worst match for United. Passing game was completely off.

ANTHONY MARTIAL 5 – Passed fit to start but had little effect. First player to be subbed.

Midfielder Paul Pogba blew United's best chance, firing straight at Reds goalkeeper Alisson

MARCUS RASHFORD 5 – Played through middle but couldn't stay onside and took wrong options.

Subs: Bailly, Cavani (for Martial 61, 6), Mata, Greenwood (for Fernandes 89), Henderson, Telles, Matic, Van de Beek, Tuanzebe.

Booked: Rashford.

Manager: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 6 – Had a big chance to win at Anfield and will rue not taking it.

Referee: Paul Tierney 6.5 – Liverpool were unhappy he blew early for half-time but otherwise handled it well.

Default Re: [EPL] Liverpool 0-0 Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rues Manchester United's failure to 'pounce' on makeshift Liverpool's injury problems as Premier League leaders are held to goalless draw at Anfield

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was left frustrated as Manchester United drew at Anfield
* United struggled to cause many problems for Fabinho and Jordan Henderson
* Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is confident that the goals will return for his team

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt his side missed an opportunity to end Liverpool's long unbeaten home league record after failing to 'pounce' on their injury problems.

With no fit centre-backs again, the hosts fielded midfield duo Fabinho and Jordan Henderson in the centre of their defence but the pair were not really exposed, even if goalkeeper Alisson Becker had to make two good saves to keep out Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba in the goalless draw.

The top-of-the-table clash failed to live up to its billing and there was not even a penalty incident never mind a controversy, one of the major points of debate leading up to the fixture, to talk about over the course of 90 minutes.

But Solskjaer admits United left Anfield disappointed they were not able to open up a six-point gap over their arch-rivals at the top.

'They are a good side and they have some injury problems but we didn't pounce on that,' he said. 'I felt we grew into the game and got stronger and stronger and were closer to winning.

'We were a bit disappointed in the performance, not just the result.

'We didn't do well enough to cause them problems in the first half but we defended well and they didn't create too many chances.

'We know we have players who can win you a game in the blink of a second and Bruno and Paul almost did.

'But I think everyone was a bit disappointed with the way we started the game but that is a good feeling to have that we were disappointed in the performance.'

Although Liverpool's long unbeaten home league run was extended to 68 games they failed to properly test David De Gea in the visitors goal and for the first time since March 2005 the Reds have failed to score in three consecutive league matches.

Manager Jurgen Klopp insists he was happy with the performance as chances are still being created - they had 18 shots but only three were on target - and he is confident the goals will return.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was disappointed with Manchester United's performance v Liverpool. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insisted that he was happy with the display from his side

'We have a point more than before the game,' he said. 'I think the performance was good enough to win it but to win a game you have to score goals and we didn't do that, so that's why we had that result.

'There is nothing fundamentally different, it is just the result is different.

'We try and score and we try not to not score. We have not to worry about it but we obviously have to ignore the fact and hope it will be good again.

'We did that, but the only possibility we have is to create situations and be ready to fail and do it again.

'That is a massive different to when you are flying, because then you deal with the missed chances better.

'I saw my team playing tonight a really good team with a clear idea with super passes and great counter-pressing and great desire to score and we didn't score.

'We will create chances and we will score. It is not as if we decide we will score a goal and now we will do it.

'I will help as much as I can to change the situation.'
