Queiroz: Iran don't have supermen like Spain, but are able to do super things



Iran are set to face Spain in their second game of 2018 World Cup and their coach, Carlos Queiroz, has warned that his team can cause problems to La Roja.

The former Real Madrid tactician has also praised his players' spirit, as well as their individual talent.

"We don't have supermen like Spain, but we can do super things," he told the press conference prior the game.

"What worries me is that my players enter the field concentrated and with a positive attitude.

"There is nothing more to say about players like Isco, [Marco] Asensio and [Andres] Iniesta."If one of them doesn't play, it will be another.

"The Portuguese coach went on to claim that Fernando Hierro is what La Roja needed to keep the players together after Julen Lopetegui's dismissal.

"What happened with Lopetegui is a rare situation," he added."It's ironic for me because I fought so much with Jorge Valdano, so that Fernando didn't leave Madrid and have him as a player.

"Now the irony puts us face to face, I know Hierro well and he is the perfect person to unite a broken Spain.

"Asked about the upcoming game, Queiroz has explained that there are not many things to do in order to uphold Spain.

"It isn't easy to play against Spain and if I tell you how we are going to do it, that isn't going to help us," he noted.

"We are here to compete, we don't want excuses and we play for the colours of our national team.

"If there was a magic formula to stop Spain, a million euros wouldn't be much to pay for it.

"We can't focus on Spain and we should think of ourselves, [as] no team is perfect and that is the magic of football.

"If it was an NBA game it would be different, but in football we see that every game is a lottery.

"Anyone can win the best in the world, if they have a bad day.

"We have a lot of respect for the Spanish team, but we have nothing to lose."

'I should have ripped his head off': Roy Keane reveals he clashed with Iran coach Carlos Queiroz during their time together at Manchester United

Roy Keane has divulged his tumultuous relationship with former Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz, claiming he should have 'ripped his head off' while the pair were together at Old Trafford.



Queiroz was Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at United for one season from 2002 until 2003 before he seized the opportunity to take over as Real Madrid manager.

But following an unsuccessful spell in charge at the Bernabeu, Queiroz rejoined United's coaching staff under Ferguson in the summer of 2004.

And Keane, who was United's captain at the time, revealed he clashed with the Portuguese coach during his second spell after he questioned his loyalty.

'He's an excellent coach along with a lot of great coaches I worked under at United,' Keane said during ITV's coverage of Spain's World Cup clash with Iran, who Queiroz manages.

'He was probably a bit defence-minded but I had a good relationship with him, particularly in his first spell at the club.

'But his second spell when he came back and towards the end of my time I found him really disrespectful towards me so we had a bit of a fall out.

'He questioned my loyalty and I told him where to go. One of my big regrets is that I probably should have ripped his head off. But he's an excellent coach doing an excellent job.'

Co-pundit Patrice Evra, who also worked under Queiroz at United, added: 'Carlos is someone who you feel like never smiles.

'His training sessions are perfect but even when he left United, tactically it was not the same. As a person he’s really difficult, I will say.'

Keane left United by mutual consent in November 2005 after clashing with Ferguson, but Queiroz remained assistant until 2008, when he took over as Portugal manager.

Queiroz has been Iran manager since 2011 and has led them to successive World Cup tournaments for the first time in their history after qualifying for Russia.

Iran has rehired the former Manchester United No 2 Carlos Queiroz to lead the team for the World Cup in Qatar, with the Portuguese coach saying 'the family called me home'.

Iran, ranked 22 in the world and Asia's top-ranked team, plays United States, England and Wales in its World Cup group, but has endured an unsteady few months with the tournament nearing.

It fired Quieroz's predecessor, Dragan Skocic, in July after reports of ill-discipline emerged in a training camp in Qatar.

Taking to Twitter, Queiroz said: 'When the family call you home, all you do is simply just show up. Fully committed to your duties and ready for the Mission. Lets do it together Lads! To the future! Thank you so much Team Melli.'

It will be his third World Cup as Iran coach, having coached Iran at the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. Iran failed to get out of the group stage on both occasions.

Queiroz worked as legendary United manager Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant in two spells and helped the team win two Premier League titles and the Champions League. He also coached Real Madrid for a season.

Iran has a friendly with Uruguay on September 23 and then with Senegal four days later. According to the Washington Post, it is also looking to play Russia. FIFA and UEFA have banned Russia from international competitions but it can seek permission to play a friendly.

Iran's clash with the United States is the standout tie in the group, with the game taking place between two nations that have had 40 years of intensely sour political relations.

Joe Biden's administration is currently trying to revive the nuclear deal with Iran, a move that could thaw relations between the two if sorted before the Nov 21 game.

But it could equally be a reason for further divide if the current standoff remains by the time World Cup arrives.

Furthermore, Iran has faced criticism this year for failing to comply with FIFA rules on allowing women into stadiums to watch soccer.

Hundreds of women were pepper sprayed after being refused entry to Iran's match against Lebanon in March, its last World Cup qualifier.

The shocking incident came after former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani promised football governing body FIFA gradual reforms back in 2018.

A year later, FIFA threatened to suspend Iran if it did not allow female fans access to matches. While Iran agreed to let women attend national games at the Azadi stadium in Tehran, it remained unclear whether the ban was lifted nationwide.

Bisa dibilang Queiroz mungkin satu-satunya mantan asisten pelatih United dalam sejarah yang sukses tiga kali beruntun tampil di Piala Dunia sebagai pelatih timnas. Queiroz berhasil membawa timnas Iran tampil pada Piala Dunia 2014, 2018 dan 2022. Luar biasa!
