Preview: Fulham


Form guide:*United go to Craven Cottage unbeaten in six games in all competitions, with last Saturday's stirring comeback at home to Stoke closing the gap to the top four in what is turning out to be an open race for the Premier League title. Fulham are having an unhappy time of it, losing away to high-flying Southampton in the league before crashing out of the Capital One Cup to Leicester City from the Championship in midweek. Their last home fixture resulted in their only win at the Cottage in the league so far this term when Darren Bent's goal was enough to see off Everton.

Ins and outs:*David Moyes looks to have a welcome selection headache on his hands, with a full complement of players jostling for a place in his starting line-up. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand appeared to come through the win over Norwich on Tuesday unscathed, but with an important Champions League tie looming next week, squad rotation may be the order of the day in west London. For Fulham, Hugo Rodallega limped out of the defeat to Leicester on Tuesday with a groin problem.

Last meeting: Wayne Rooney struck 11 minutes from time when the two sides last met, in February, but three points were secured when Robin van Persie cleared a Philippe Senderos header off the line. It was Rooney's 10th goal in as many games at the time, and his fifth in his last five Premier League appearances against Fulham.

Did you know? During last season's trip to Fulham, the Craven Cottage floodlights failed just before half-time, plunging the stadium into darkness for several minutes. Thankfully, the match was illuminated after the break via. Rooney's match-winning goal.

The manager: In his playing days, Martin Jol was a tough, combative midfielder who plied his trade in this country with West Brom and Coventry City. After hanging up his boots he turned to coaching, and Jol had spells in. charge of Spurs, Ajax and Hamburg before replacing Mark Hughes at Fulham in 2013. His side's current run of form has seen the Dutchman's position come under the microscope, although he shrugged off talk of being under pressure
after the Capital One Cup loss at Leicester on
Tuesday.

Star man: The languid Dimitar Berbatov is the obvious one to watch, but the former United striker has yet to hit top form and scored just once in the Premier League so far this season. Darren Bent has looked in reasonable touch since arriving from Aston Villa, and United fans will be hoping that*Pajtim Kasami will not repeat his incredible volleyed goal from the win over Crystal Palace.

Whistle-blower: Wiltshire's Lee Probert will be the man in the middle on Saturday. So far this season the 41-year-old has waved seven yellow cards and brandished red once, at Sunderland's former United defender John O'Shea.

Rivals watch: Chelsea's visit to Newcastle will have just finished when United kick off at Craven Cottage. Man City host Norwich in another 3pm kick-off, while Arsenal are at home to Liverpool in the Saturday tea-time fixture. Everton and Spurs go head-to-head at Goodison Park at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Moyes: Reds in rude health.


David Moyes has declared Robin van Persie, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand fit for Manchester United's trip to Fulham in the Premier League on Saturday.*

Van Persie was allowed to rest a couple of niggling injuries during Tuesday’s 4-0 win over Norwich City in the Capital One Cup, a triumph that also saw Vidic and Ferdinand successfully return to first team action following their recent spells on the sidelines.*

However, during his weekly press conference at the Aon Training Complex, the boss did rule Danny Welbeck out of contention and explained that the striker will not even travel to Craven Cottage as a result of the persistent knee injury that has plagued him of late.

“I think both (Vidic and Ferdinand) are very close to full fitness,” Moyes said. “They showed that in midweek when playing Premier League opposition. They both played for 90 minutes so I can't see any reason why they wouldn't be ready to be selected or involved.

"Van Persie has been fine. He's trained well and worked quite well this week so hopefully he will be okay. Welbeck has had a bit of fluid on his knee. He's trained for a few days this week so he's certainly getting much closer to match fitness but won't travel to Fulham this weekend.”
