Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
Manchester United are the kings of the PFA Team of the Year award: Sportsmail charts ALL the men who have made the Premier League select over the last 25 seasons
* The Premier League team of the season was announced on Thursday morning * Four player from each of Chelsea and Tottenham were named in the side * But over the last 25 years, Manchester United have come out on top * The Red Devils have had a total of 79 selections out of a possible 275 Looking back through the Premier League teams of the season since the competition began in 1992 reads like a who's who of English football over the last 25 years. Some of the game's most iconic players appear time and again, showing the strength of the league and the supreme talent which has graced it since the big shake-up in 1992. Only 11 players can be awarded such an honour each season, preserving their status in history, but what is the make-up of these 275 selections? Where did they come from? Who did they play for? Sportsmail takes a look. Manchester United have won 79 out of a possible 275 player of the year nominations As expected, with 13 titles in 25 seasons, Manchester United are far and away the leader when it comes to team of the year selections with 79 out of a possible 275. That averages out at more than three per campaign, with the Red Devils only failing to send a player to the team on one occasion. When the Red Devils won the treble in 1999 they had five players named in the side, but their peak came in the 2006-07 season when they completely dominated, earning an incredible eight of the 11 selections. The likes of Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs have all rightfully received multiple nominations throughout their long Premier League careers, while Nemanja Vidic and Cristiano Ronaldo have all been mainstays of the side at various stages. Keane made his mark before moving to Old Trafford, too, with selection while a Nottingham Forest player in the inaugural Premier League season. Other names to make the very first all-star side for the new top flight included David Bardsley of QPR (their only representative) and Tony Dorigo of Leeds, while Peter Schmeichel received his one and only selection that year. In truth, nobody is even close to matching the Old Trafford club, with Arsenal the nearest challengers on 43. The Gunners are not represented on this year's team-sheet, though, and have only had eight of their players acknowledged this decade. Quote:
Liverpool and Tottenham have yet to win a Premier League title but have both produced exciting teams over the years, with their efforts rewarded with a significant number of appearances. Two Premier League stalwarts, though, have not contributed as many players as they may have been expected to, given the years they have spent in the competition. Quote:
Steven Gerrard leads the way when it comes to personal appearances, with the former Liverpool skipper racking up eight nominations during his long career at Anfield. Premier League greats including Alan Shearer, Gary Neville, Giggs and Henry all lag behind on six. When it comes to nationalities in the team of the year, there's unsurprisingly no catching England, who have seen players selected on 127 occasions. While the usual suspects of Frank Lampard, Gerrard, Shearer, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney all appear, there are also a number of lesser-lights who have been rewarded for exceptional campaigns. Aston Villa pair Alan Wright and Ugo Ehiogu were named in 1995-96, United's Wes Brown in 2001, Kieron Dyer in 2003, while Ashley Young made back-to-back appearances while at Villa. Pascal Chimbonda made the league's select XI while with Wigan. The Republic of Ireland and Wales have all contributed double digits in terms of players, with Scotland chipping in with just four, but there has yet to be a Northern Irishman crack the Premier League's leading XI. Colin Hendry (twice), Gary McAllister and Darren Fletcher have all be given the nod, but no player from north of the border has broken into the Premier League's best XI since 2010. Aside from English players, France is the biggest contributor with 35 appearances, which is in no small part down to the influx at Arsenal in the early 2000s which saw Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires all become mainstays of the side. Indeed, Henry made the team for an impressive six successive seasons between 2001 and 2006. Quote:
That started to change in 2008 when Fabregas and Torres became the first of their countrymen to be named in the team of the year, with players from Spain being at the forefront ever since. Thomas Vermaelen was the first Belgian to be rewarded for his displays when he was selected in 2009-10, with at least one player from the country making the team of the year in every subsequent season since. Gary Pallister made a number of select sides, with Peter Schmeichel making it just once Some of football's most famous nations find themselves at the bottom end of the list, with South American powerhouses Brazil and Argentina providing just three each and Germany offering up just one Premier League all-star. That was Jurgen Klinsmann in 1995. Then there are those countries who have contributed just once. Schmeichel was the first goalkeeper named in an all-Premier League team but, just like his country, has surprisingly not featured since. Stig Inge Bjornebye (Norway), Emmanuel Adebayor (Togo), Dwight Yorke (Trinidad & Tobago), Harry Kewell (Australia) and Antonio Valencia (Ecuador) fly the flags for their respective countries. Code:

Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
Premier League money table: there are no dead rubbers in final fixtures with millions to play for
* With relegation and the title decided it might seem that there is little to play for * But each position in the Premier League is still worth £1.9m in prize money * With mid-table teams so closely bunched, a final-day win could earn up to £13m * West Ham could earn up to £22.8m or as little as £9.5m Southampton v Stoke this Sunday is a dead rubber? Think the same about Burnley v West Ham and Leicester v Bournemouth? Think again. With each position in the Premier League worth an additional £1.9million thanks to the new TV deal, there is plenty to play for. Victory in the last game of the season could see sides handsomely rewarded with a jump up the table. Five points separate Southampton in eighth — worth £24.7m in merit money — and Watford in 16th (£9.5m). Chelsea will earn over £150m in Premier League payments this season, £38m in prize money Quote:
The rest is largely made up of money from live TV appearances and equal shares of domestic and overseas TV income. Sunderland are already relegated and are set to receive around £100m. They will also be rewarded the basic £1.9m after finishing bottom of the league. Above them, though, are several clubs who can bank significant bonuses. West Brom are among those in that crowded bunch. They currently sit ninth in the Premier League, which would be worth about £22.8m in merit money. Finish eighth and they would get £24.7m. Finish 12th and it would drop to £17.1m. There is also West Ham. Slaven Bilic’s side are currently 12th (£17.1m) but can finish as high as 10th (£20.9m) or as low as 16th (£9.5m). The same goes for Leicester, who can come eighth (£24.7m) or 15th (£11.4m). Elsewhere, Everton will finish seventh and will be paid an estimated £26.6m. Relegated Hull will finish 18th and receive £5.7m. Quote:

Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
English football finally getting tough on divers as FA bring in two-game bans for Premier League stars who trick refs
* The FA has approved plans to retrospectively punish diving and feigning injury * The proposals were approved at the FA's annual general meeting at Wembley * A new offence of 'Successful Deception of a Match Official' has been created * A panel of three officials will be asked to review all available video footage * Players found guilty of committing an offence will receive a two-match ban Divers who con referees will be hit with two-match retrospective bans next season as English football finally gets tough on cheating. Sportsmail revealed a fortnight ago that the Football Association were discussing ways to stamp out simulation by bringing in new rules. This was confirmed on Thursday when proposals were ratified at an FA council meeting and a new offence, 'successful deception of a match official', was added to the rules. A three-man panel, made up of one former referee, one ex-manager and one ex-player, will independently review footage each weekend looking for cases of simulation. Only incidents that result in a player winning a penalty or leading to an opponent being sent off — through a red card or two yellows — will be punished. Those found guilty of diving by a unanimous decision will face a two-match ban while opponents who have received a yellow or red card in the incident will have the punishment rescinded. The panel will also respond to incidents flagged up by managers and players. If a club appeals against a ban — they are able to submit their own written and video evidence — it will be referred by the FA to a three-person commission. The need for a crackdown was highlighted earlier this month when Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and Manchester City's Leroy Sane were accused of diving to win penalties. In December, Robert Snodgrass admitted to diving to win a penalty for Hull against Crystal Palace. Robert Snodgrass was accusing of diving to earn a penalty for Hull against Crystal Palace. The FA has approved a proposal for retrospective bans for players who dive or feign injury Both West Brom manager Tony Pulis and Burnley's Sean Dyche had urged the football authorities to bring in new measures to prevent the cheats profiting from tricking officials. The change required the approval of the Premier League, the EFL and the Professional Footballers' Association. The FA said in a statement: 'Where there is clear and overwhelming evidence to suggest a match official has been deceived by an act of simulation, and as a direct result, the offending player's team has been awarded a penalty and/or an opposing player has been dismissed, the FA will be able to act retrospectively under its fast track system.' That system was introduced in 2004 to allow the FA to deal with disciplinary cases after a match and has been used to review red- card offences that were not seen by officials but were caught on TV. An FA delegation visited their counterparts in Scotland earlier this year to discuss how effective their review panel system, introduced in 2011, has been and they have adopted similar measures. They also looked abroad at the system in Italy where they punish divers retrospectively with two-game suspensions. But the system has its critics. 'It's utter rubbish,' said Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce. 'What about the lad who gets booked who didn't dive, what are they going to do with that? 'They're going to say, "That's unlucky, next time we'll try to get that right". 'Bring technology in and we can look at it on the day and then bring a sin bin in so we can put them in for 10 minutes then put them back on.' Code:

Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
Chelsea earn over £150million in prize money after winning the Premier League while Sunderland pocket £93m despite finishing bottom
* Antonio Conte’s first season title sees Chelsea top Premier League money pile * Clubs earn huge cash from TV deals and Premier League's commercial income the lowest earning club, bottom of the table Sunderland, still earned £93.4m * Despite finishing second, Tottenham were the fourth highest earners in league * Each club got at least £12m in TV money, even Watford who were on eight times Chelsea’s Premier League title victory in Antonio Conte’s first season as a manager in England earned them almost £151m in prize cash, with official figures released on Wednesday showing they have pocketed £150,811,183 from central funds alone. The money comes primarily from the PL’s huge TV deals but also includes Chelsea’s share of the league’s central commercial income. Manchester City were the second highest earners, making £146,927,965, followed by Liverpool (£146,122,439) then Tottenham (£145,461,325). Chelsea’s Premier League title victory this season under new boss Antonio Conte has earned them almost £151m in prize cash City and Liverpool both earned more than Tottenham despite finishing lower than Spurs in the table because they had more games shown live on TV in the UK - and more TV games means more money in the payments system. Manchester United, with £141m, were the only other club earning more than £140m although Arsenal came close on £139.6m. The lowest earning club, bottom of the table Sunderland, had to settle for ‘only’ £93,471,118. The 20 clubs between them have split a staggering £2.4billion this season, from annual Premier League income that is now approaching £3bn a year, the vast majority from TV deals either at home or from overseas. Chelsea’s money was made up of £38,832,180 ‘merit’ cash for finishing top of the table, £32,827,014 in ‘facility fees’ for being shown in 28 live TV games in the UK, plus equal shares of the domestic TV deal, overseas TV deals and commercial income from the league’s sponsors. Sky and BT Sport are paying £5.136 billion between them to show Premier League matches live in the UK across three seasons from 2016 to 2019 inclusive. Foreign broadcasters around world are paying more than £3 billion combined, on top, for the same period. The Premier League also earns money from the sales of highlights, near-live rights, clip rights, and brings in further sums from commercial deals. All that cash goes into one big pot and the sums announced today are the eye-watering rewards for the clubs. For 2016-17 every club gets an ‘equal’ share of just over £79m derived from domestic TV income, overseas income and commercial income, with specifics in our accompanying table. Every club then gets another sum depending on league position, worth £1,941,609 per place in the table, from that sum for bottom-placed Sunderland to £38,832,180 to Chelsea. Each club also gets a variable amount depending on how many times they were shown live on Sky or BT. Every club got a minimum of £12,377,522 from this pot, even if they were shown as rarely as Sunderland and Watford (just eight live televised games each), or Stoke (nine times). Thanks to parachute payments, the Premier League paid £219m to teams not in their division, with Aston Villa leading the way Liverpool were shown live in the UK most, 29 times (a record for one club in one season), followed by Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City (28 times each), Tottenham and Arsenal (25). Clubs have three main revenue streams: match day income from the likes of tickets and corporate dining, media income - of which the payments listed are the largest but not the only part - and commercial income from kit deals, sponsorship, merchandise, tours and so on. The ratio in central earnings between highest earners Chelsea at the top and Sunderland at the bottom in 2016-17 is 1.6135 to one. This is less ‘fair’ than last season’s all-time fairest ratio of 1.5153 to one between top and bottom, but the Premier League still remains by far the most equitable league in division of central funds in this regard. The difference between top and bottom is closer to 8 to 1, while in Italy’s Serie A it is 5 to 1, in France’s Ligue 1 it is about 3.5 to 1, and even in the German Bundesliga it is 2 to 1. The Premier League pay ‘parachute’ payments to clubs relegated in recent seasons. The three clubs relegated last season - Newcastle, Norwich and Aston Villa - get £41m each this time. Code:

Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
Premier League clubs consider introducing Saturday night games starting at 7.45pm for TV broadcasting
* All 20 Premier League chairmen met at a shareholders' meeting on Thursday * They have pledged to broadcast at least 190 games a season from 2019- 20 * Sunday morning matches beginning at 11.30am have also been proposed Premier League clubs have discussed the idea of staging Saturday night games. The league have pledged to broadcast at least 190 games per season when they negotiate television rights for the 2019-20 season onwards — an increase of at least 22 on the 168 in the current agreement. The total number of televised matches could reach upwards of 200. Chairmen of all 20 top-flight clubs met at a shareholders' meeting in Harrogate last Thursday where the idea was mooted to have some of the extra games at 7.45pm on Saturdays. This would reduce further the amount of 3pm kick-offs in a move that could frustrate supporters. A final decision is expected towards the end of the year, when bids for the domestic rights will be submitted. Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore could face a backlash from the proposal The increase in live television fixtures comes as a result of a two-year investigation by Ofcom. The regulator followed a complaint by Virgin Media claiming that the percentage of live games available to broadcasters was lower than Europe's leading leagues. Virgin demanded all 380 matches made live in their complaint, made in 2014. Ofcom dropped their probe in 2016, content that the Premier League had committed to increasing the number of matches available. A Premier League spokesman said: 'The Premier League is more popular than ever due to the fantastic football put on by clubs and the commitment of fans. 'In season 2016-17 stadiums were a record 96.5 per cent full, unique broadcasting reach in the UK was up 2 per cent on the previous season and matches were available to watch in one billion homes in 188 countries.' Several alternate suggestions for various new kick-off times were made at the shareholders' meeting. Sportsmail revealed last Friday that Sunday matches, starting at 11.30am, have also been proposed. Re: Premier League - News and Rumors
Manchester United academy leads the way again in the Premier League after graduates racked up more than double the minutes of nearest rival Tottenham
* Manchester United are still the No 1 producer of top-flight talent in England * United's academy players managed 44,055 Premier League minutes last season * Tottenham finished a distant second with a total of 19,995 minutes * Sheffield United and Ajax both feature in top 10 with Barcelona in 11th place Manchester United's academy made the single biggest contribution to last season's Premier League of any youth set-up, a Press Association Sport study has found. Their graduates racked up more than twice as many top-flight minutes played as the next best academy. Players who finished their youth careers in the United academy were on the field for a total of 44,055 minutes in the study. Tottenham were second, with a total of 19,995. Paul Pogba racked up 2,609 minutes in the Premier League after rejoining Manchester United England international Marcus Rashford played 1,702 minutes last season The Red Devils' reputation for developing home-grown talent extends back to the 'Busby Babes' of the 1950s and continued through the 'Class of '92' group which played a part in the United side that dominated domestic football in the 1990s and won the treble in 1999. Our study shows that the United academy is still the No 1 producer of top-flight talent in England. In their own line-up, France midfielder Paul Pogba - who rejoined United last summer in an £89million deal - racked up 2,609 minutes while England internationals Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard played 1,702 and 1,367 minutes respectively. Other non-United players to make significant contributions to the Red Devils academy total included Burnley duo Michael Keane and Tom Heaton, who each played 3,150 minutes. England defender Keane has since joined Everton. Bournemouth striker Joshua King played 2,721 minutes, while Leicester pair Danny Simpson (2,990) and Danny Drinkwater (2,466) were also key to the high total for United. Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross played 3,150 minutes while relegated Sunderland used five United academy products during the season - John O'Shea, Donald Love, Paddy McNair, Darron Gibson and Adnan Januzaj. West Brom duo Jonny Evans (2,638) and Darren Fletcher (3,235) also came through the United system. The biggest contributor to Tottenham's total who still plays for the club was Harry Kane, with 2,536 minutes played in a season disrupted by injury. Spurs graduates Charlie Daniels and Adam Smith each played over 3,000 minutes for Bournemouth, and Andros Townsend played 2,528 minutes for Crystal Palace. Quote:
Kelechi Iheanacho (526 minutes) was the only City youth product to feature in their first team in the Premier League under Pep Guardiola all season. City graduate Ben Mee at Burnley played 3,016 minutes while Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel featured for 2,667 minutes. Adam Clayton at Middlesbrough, another City youth player, played 2,806 minutes and Stoke midfielder Glenn Whelan played 2,278. Southampton finished fourth in the study, with 14,340 minutes, while West Ham were fifth on 13,907. Of last season's European qualifiers from the Premier League, Liverpool are the only one not to feature in the top 10, ranking 17th in the study with 8,753 minutes. League One champions Sheffield United made a surprise appearance in the top 10, finishing eighth on 13,564 minutes - one place and 119 minutes ahead of Chelsea. Quote:
The only club from outside England to feature in the top 10 were Dutch side Ajax, who were 10th. Graduates from Barcelona's La Masia finishing school made the 12th-biggest contribution, while the largest representation from outside Europe came from the youth set-up at Argentinian giants River Plate. At the other end of the scale, relegated Hull produced the fewest minutes of any Premier League team - just 501, shared between their own players Josh Tymon (325) and Jarrod Bowen (176). The Tigers were the only club not to have a graduate feature for any other top-flight team and their youth products also lagged over 1,000 total minutes behind those of Watford, the second-lowest ranked Premier League club in the study with 1,513 minutes. Almost exactly half of the Hornets' total came from Manchester United winger Ashley Young (757 minutes), with the rest from their own players led by Adrian Mariappa (561). Code:
